Abstract:In the three-dimensional (3D) light field display (LFD), display quality is the most important concern, and from an intuitive perspective, the quality will decline with the increase of display depth. When evaluating display quality, definition is one of the indispensable indicators. However, there is no universally accepted quantitative measure in the 3D display like resolution in the two-dimensional (2D) display. In this work, a voxel analysis model is utilized to investigate the variation of definition with depth and two resolutions, spatial resolution and perceived visual resolution, with corresponding measurement methods are proposed to quantify the definition of 3D LFDs. The experiments are performed on two LFD devices, and the relationship between definition and display depth is obtained and analyzed. The display effect at different depths and the impact of human eye characteristics on the perceived display definition is studied.

Abstract:A high resolution three-dimensional (3D) volumetric display system utilizing a rotating light-emitting diode (LED) array is presented, which provides viewers with true depth cues, binocular parallax, accommodation and convergence, etc, and can be observed from any direction without the need for any special viewing aids. The data voxelization method for the system is presented. The evaluation of texture distortion due to the deviations of the voxel positions caused in voxelization is introduced. 3D models with two types of texture are built: one in which the gray scale is nearly invariant in the background, and the other in which the gray scale varies in the whole picture. The texture distortion of models with the two types of texture is evaluated and a numerical analysis is given. The relationship between texture distortion and voxelization precision is studied. Voxelization precision can be improved by shortening the voxelization step length. Experiments show that models with textures in which gray scale varies gradually in the whole picture need higher voxelization precision than textures with an invariant gray scale background. In order to obtain similar display quality, the ratio of the voxelization step length of models with the two types of texture is about 5/2.

Abstract:An analysis method for the relationship between light-field display (LFD) depth and 3D image definition from visual perspective is presented in this paper. A simplified analytical model suitable for standard LFD system is established, which can be used to analyze the formation of voxels from a perspective that is more consistent with visual perception. Moreover, the formula for calculating voxel size is derived in relation to the depth plane and viewing position. Reasonable simulation programs and LFD devices with different parameters are used in experiments to verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis. The analysis and experimental results presented in this paper may contribute to a better understanding of the principle of light-field display, and it is helpful to design and optimize the LFD system with better display effect.

Abstract:Three-dimensional light-field displays (3D-LFDs) can provide viewers with glass-free 3D images. The display effect of reconstructed 3D images is closely related to the number of 3D object points that the 3D display system can construct, which can be regarded as the information quantity of the 3D-LFDs. However, the information quantity presented by a 3D-LFD is limited by fixed hardware parameters such as display panels and optical components. It is difficult to present an ideal 3D visual experience with the increase in display depth. In this paper, an analytical model based on voxel construction for 3D-LFDs is proposed, which can estimate the information quantity that a 3D-LFD can reproduce. The variation regularity of information quantity with display depth is analyzed and the influence of hardware parameters on display effect is discussed. With the proposed strategies, the display effect can be improved in a targeted manner without blurring and aliasing by adjusting the hardware parameters in display systems and matching the information quantity at different display depths.

Abstract:In three-dimensional (3D) light-field displays, the quality of a reconstructed image degrades with increasing depth of field due to the pixel deviation effect. A fitting algorithm of dense-viewpoints is proposed to reduce the pixel deviation with high image quality. To analyze the pixel deviation effect, the human vision based perspectives perceived from 3D light-field display system with the holographic functional screen are mathematically modeled. The optimized synthetic image is coded according to the mapping relationship from the display model and the optimal Gaussian distribution parameters achieved with the maximum likelihood estimation method. The effectivenesses of the proposed model and the optimization method are verified through simulations as well as optical experiments. A human vision-based high resolution 3D light-field display with 45-degree viewing angle and the large depth of field is achieved.

Abstract:The light field distribution of a real object is used to regenerate spatial three-dimensional (3D) display. The principle and techniques are proposed describing how to use light field distribution in the real 3D display. The experimental results show that vivid 3D display with current spatial light modulator can be built up, which can get better 3D effect than the traditional holographic display based on light field regeneration.

Abstract:To improve the performance of 3D light field display(LFD) devices and optimize their display effects, a depth-of-field (DOF) enhancement in LFD based on fusion of voxel information on the depth plane is proposed. In previous research, a calculation method was developed to calculate the voxel size on the depth plane. According to this calculation method, a distribution model of voxel varying with display depth is established. A DOF determination criterion based on voxel distribution from visual perspective is proposed, and its accuracy is validated through subjective experiments involving multiple participants. By fusing the voxels on the depth plane, the phenomenon of voxel overlap is improved, resulting in enhanced definition of 3D images on the depth plane. Under the condition that the structure and parameters of the 3D LFD device are determined, the maximum achievable display depth will be increased significantly. Finally, experimental validation of the method's feasibility is conducted using multiple 3D light field devices for display.

Abstract:Compared with traditional integral imaging systems, light-field displays (LFDs) based on a holographic functional screen (HFS) shows significant advantages in terms of the number of viewpoints, large viewing angle, and high viewing resolution. LFDs usually suffer from a limited depth range, and the reason majorly originates from the pixel deviation effect in the reconstruction process. Here, an analysis method for the depth of field (DOF) based on the pixel deviation effect observed on the HFS plane is presented. Simulation experiments are carried out to show that the percentage of pixel deviation is a more accurate measure to calculate the DOF. The feasibility of this method is verified in optical experiments.

Abstract:AbstractNovel approach to achieve touchable three dimensional (3D) light field display is investigated. Light field reconstruction principle, multi‐Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) spliced style configuration and diffuser characteristic are analyzed, respectively. The point‐to‐point mapping method in image aberration evaluation is proposed which is used not only in the evaluation of 3D imaging performance, but also to construct the distortion compensation for spliced sub‐images on multi‐LCDs. The calibrating method aims to achieve high performance 3D display with considering the system geometrical arrangement and diffuser characteristics. The touchable floating 3D scene displayed by the prototype can be observed with high image resolution and large continuous viewing area.

Abstract:Approach to achieve self-calibration three-dimensional (3D) light field display is investigated in this paper. The proposed 3D light field display is constructed up on spliced multi-LCDs, lens and diaphragm arrays, and directional diffuser. The light field imaging principle, hardware configuration, diffuser characteristic, and image reconstruction simulation are described and analyzed, respectively. Besides the light field imaging, a self-calibration method is proposed to improve the imaging performance. An image sensor is deployed to capture calibration patterns projected onto and then reflected by the polymer dispersed liquid crystal film, which is attached to and shaped the diffuser. These calibration components are assembled with the display unit and can be switched between display mode and calibration mode. In the calibration mode, the imperfect imaging relations of optical components are captured and calibrated automatically. We demonstrate our design by implementing the prototype of proposed 3D light field display by using modified off-the-shelf products. The proposed approach successfully meets the requirement of real application on scalable configuration, fast calibration, large viewing angular range, and smooth motion parallax.

Abstract:Additive light field displays are transparent autostereoscopic three-dimensional displays without backlights, thus suitable for augmented reality applications. However, when the parallax between viewpoint images becomes large with the increase of viewing angle, the optimization algorithm is hard to handle too many dissimilarities evenly on all viewpoints, resulting in poor reconstructed quality. This paper presents an additive light field display using the weighted simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique with viewing angle-dependent weight distribution functions. We constrain the optimization to deliver a reconstructed light field of high image quality for viewpoints of large weight. When the proposed method is applied, with a wide dynamic viewing angle of 57 degrees x 43 degrees, the tracked views' peak signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 30 dB with only two additive display layers.

Abstract:We propose clear definition of virtual voxel about the multi-view 3D LCD and also specify its characteristics. With a thorough command of 3D LCD principles, the virtual voxel′s display depth is carefully studied and its relation with corresponding point distance as well as observing distance is calculated quantitatively aim at the symthagram204 display of StereoGraphics company . Based on lens array refraction theory the formula is presented, with which the farthest observable distance between different corresponding points is calculated. It offers a foundation for the calculation of the most virtual voxel display depth between different corresponding points. If we set the interocular distance as 65mm, the optimum observing distance is calculated as 1.26m. The research provides a quantitative standard to measure and compares the performance of multi-view 3D LCD.

Abstract:Light field display is considered as the most promising three-dimensional(3D) display technology, but its development is severely constrained by the shallow depth of field(DOF). In order to extend the DOF of light field display without affecting other viewing indicators, a 3D light field fusion display system is proposed in this paper. However, due to the problem of voxel superposition, the light field display contents cannot be correctly fused, which makes the display results inconsistent with the 3D scene captured. Through the analysis of the physical process of voxel superposition, a coding scheme which can make the contents of light field display fuse correctly is completed. Then the structural parameters of the system and the parameters of optical elements have been designed and a prototype has been developed. The experimental results of the prototype verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed coding scheme. The comparison of experimental images shows that the proposed system can significantly improve the display effect of 3D scenes with large DOF.

Abstract:To realize three-dimensional(3D) images with low crosstalk, full resolution, and multi-view, a 3D display based on a multi-directional backlight is proposed. An eye-tracker in the system is used to acquire the position of human eyes and feedback to multi-directional backlight and the liquid crystal display (LCD) panel. Directional parallax images are time-sequentially provided to each eye by simultaneously working of multi-directional backlight and LCD screen. Viewers can achieve 3D perception based on the persistence of vision. Multi-directional backlight is mainly realized by a series of cylindrical waves and a holographic optical element (HOE). Different cylindrical waves produce diffracted beams in different directions through HOE. Double-LED type and diffuser type are proposed to improve the uniformity of the proposed system. Experimental results indicate that this system can provide full resolution 3D images in 25 viewing zones, and the uniformity is improved to 80% average crosstalk is as low as 2.75% , which satisfy the demands for crosstalk, resolution, uniformity in the 3D display system, and the visual experience of viewers is greatly improved.

Abstract:There is a colour nonuniformity zone existing in three-dimensional (3D) volumetric displays which is based on the rotating colour light-emitting diode (LED) array. We analyse the reason for the colour nonuniformity zone by measuring the light intensity distribution and chromaticity coordinates of the LED in the volumetric display. Two boundaries of the colour nonuniformity zone are calculated. We measure the colour uniformities for a single cuboid of 3 * 3 * 4 voxels to display red, green, blue and white colour in different horizontal viewing angles, and for 64 cuboids distributed in the whole cylindrical image space with a fixed viewpoint. To evaluate the colour uniformity of a 3D image, we propose three evaluation indices of colour uniformity: the average of colour difference, the maximum colour difference and the variance of colour difference. The measurement results show that the character of colour uniformity is different for the 3D volumetric display and the two-dimensional display.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) light-field displays (LFDs) suffer from a narrow viewing angle, limited depth range, and low spatial information capacity, which limit their diversified application. Because the number of pixels used to construct 3D spatial information is limited, increasing the viewing angle reduces the viewpoint density, which degrades the 3D performance. A solution based on a holographic functional screen (HFS) and a ladder-compound lenticular lens unit (LC-LLU) is proposed to increase the viewing angle while optimizing the viewpoint utilization. The LC-LLU and HFS are used to create 160 non-uniformly distributed viewpoints with low crosstalk, which increases the viewpoint density in the middle viewing zone and provides clear monocular depth cues. The corresponding coding method is presented as well. The optimized compound lenticular lens array can balance between suppressing aberration and improving displayed quality. The simulations and experiments show that the proposed 3D LFD can present natural 3D images with the right perception and occlusion relationship within a 65° viewing angle.
