Ask away! Empowering students to ask anonymous in-class questions

Abstract:Asking questions in front of a large classroom of one’s peers is sufficiently intimidating that a majority of students will not participate in class in this way, hence missing out on a crucial part of the educational experience. A very easy option that has been implemented in our classrooms to great effect is outlined herein: an anonymous form that students can post questions to during class.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?

The problem that this paper attempts to solve is that in large - sized classes, students miss an important part of the educational experience because they are afraid to ask questions in front of their peers. Specifically, the authors observed that most students are reluctant to ask questions face - to - face in large - sized classes, which results in their inability to actively participate in classroom interactions and thus affects their learning outcomes. To overcome this obstacle, the paper introduced a simple and effective method - using Google Forms to allow students to ask questions anonymously. This method aims to reduce students' social pressure and fear of being judged by providing an anonymous question - asking channel, thereby increasing their participation and learning motivation. In addition, anonymous questioning also helps to enhance students' autonomy and sense of belonging in their first chemistry course at university.
