Abstract:Liquid nano-absorbents have become a topic of interest as a result of their enhanced mass-transfer performance for CO2 capture. They are believed to have revolutionized the conventional CO2 chemisorption process by largely improving CO2 capture kinetics and reducing the energy requirement for solvent regeneration. Two classes of nanomaterial-based CO2 capture absorbents, amine-based nanoparticle suspensions (nanofluids) and nanoparticle organic hybrid materials (NOHMs), have been developed, with significant progress achieved in recent decades. This review addresses two key questions for these two state-of-the-art nanomaterials: how are the physical and chemical properties of the prepared liquid nano-absorbents transformed relative to those of the base fluids? And how does the transformation of the properties affect the CO2 capture behavior? While the current synthesis procedure for liquid nano-absorbents is quite straightforward, more advanced synthesis methods for long-term nanoparticle stability have been suggested for the future. Nanofluids have been shown to increase the CO2 uptake by over 20% and the CO2 capture rate by 2-93% compared with the values observed with neat amine solvents. Nanoparticles with catalytic effects on CO2 capture can significantly increase the CO2 desorption rate by as high as 4000%. NOHMs exhibit the interesting feature of enhanced mass transfer in CO2 capture because of the unique pathway network that is created in them for CO2 to reach specific functional groups. NOHMs promise an effect of combined CO2 capture and conversion, and can be used especially as electrolytes for CO2 electro-reduction. However, there are still some challenges for the application of these materials in real life, such as poor stability and high viscosity. Therefore, efficient CO2 capture processes using these solvents need to be urgently developed and studied in the future.
Reducing Aerosol and Ammonia Emission in Post-Combustion CO2 Capture: Additives As Key Solutions

Abstract:Advancement of the absorbent for CO2 capture is essential in optimizing the performance and reducing the negative environmental effects associated with this technology. Despite ammonia's promise as an absorbent, the volatility limits its practical application and creates potential environmental pollution. Therein, we assess various additives (amino acids, carbonates, and alkanolamines) for ammonia-based solvents using multi-stage circulation absorber from the viewpoints of aerosol emission, ammonia emission, and CO2 capture efficiency. Experimental findings reveal that ammonia volatilization can be inhibited by the protonation of free ammonia by carboxyl groups and the formation of hydrogen bonding between amino/hydroxyl groups and ammonia, with ammonia emission reduced by 21.7 %, aerosol emission reduced by 26.5 %, and CO2 capture efficiency increased to a maximum of 87.8 % under the condition of adding histidine. Moreover, the experiment highlights a positive correlation between total ammonia emission and aerosol concentration/diameter. Additionally, tests combining source abatement with water wash exhibit up to 50.5 % aerosol removal efficiency and up to 76.6 % ammonia removal efficiency. To further mitigate emissions, a comprehensive approach is proposed, achieving an 84.4 % reduction in ammonia emission and a 61.9 % reduction in aerosol emission. Finally, a method for recycling ammonia for desulfurization is suggested.

Abstract:Direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 represents one of the most promising technologies to achieve negative carbon emissions. Herein, the superbase ionic liquids (ILs)-modified carbon substrates were developed towards DAC of CO2 by harnessing the strong CO2 binding capability of IL and the ordered porous channels provided by the carbon supports. Detailed porosity analysis revealed that the IL with aromatic cation and oxygenate anion preferred to fill the micropores, and a thin layer was created on the surface of the mesopores. Strong π-π interaction between the IL layer and the carbon surface was disclosed by wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) analysis, leading to enhanced thermal stability of the IL phase. With the same lL coating amount, the DAC of CO2 evaluation revealed that larger mesopore size and pore volume in the carbon/IL composite materials led to higher CO2 uptake capacity by exposing more active sites to integrate CO2 from diluted sources. The thermodynamic analysis confirmed the critical role of IL coating in providing strong chemisorption sites and significantly improved selectivity to enrich the diluted CO2 from the air atmosphere. This work provides guidance on leveraging the scaffolds' surface properties and porosities of the scaffolds to tune the DAC of CO2 behaviour.

Abstract:Abstract The increasing concentration of greenhouse gasses in Earth's atmosphere is a critical concern, of which 75% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are from the combustion of fossil fuels. This rapid increase in emissions led to irredeemable damages to ecosystems such as climate change, acid rain, etc. As a result, industries and academia have focused on developing innovative and cost-effective technologies for CO2 capture and storage (CCS). Physical/chemical absorption using amine and membrane-based technologies are generally used in CCS systems. However, the inherent technical and cost-effective limitations of these techniques directed their attention toward applying nanotechnologies for CCS systems. Here, the researchers have focused on infusing nanoparticles (NPs) into existing CCS technologies. The NPs could either be suspended in a base fluid to create nanofluids (NFs) or infused with membrane base materials to create nanocomposite membranes for enhanced carbon capture capabilities. This review paper investigates the manufacturing methods, characterization techniques and various mechanisms to analyze the impact of nanoparticles-infused nanofluids and nanocomposite membranes for CO2 capture. Finally, the paper summarises the factors associated with the two technologies and then outlines the drawbacks and benefits of incorporating NPs for CCS applications.

Abstract:The emission of greenhouse gases, especially CO2, has become a major cause of environmental degradation, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a proposed solution to mitigate its impact. Nanofluids, a relatively new method for CO2 absorption, have gained attention in recent years. This review focuses on conventional methods for preparing nanofluids along with techniques to improve their stability and enhance the CO2 absorption and desorption mechanisms. Additionally, the influences of factors, i.e., nanoparticle and base solution types as well as nanoparticle concentration, on the CO2 absorption process are summarized. Furthermore, models that can predict the absorption of CO2 accurately are outlined. It is found that the types of both base liquids and nanoparticles have an important impact on the absorption by nanofluids. In-depth studies on the predictive capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) models hold immense potential in this regard. This review also puts forth effective strategies to address prevailing challenges. This will provide a solid theoretical basis for this field and underscore the promising potential of nanofluids as CO2 solvents. There are still many unexplored aspects to be considered, such as the economic viability and energy consumption of this technology.

Abstract:Global warming and climate change due to anthropogenic carbon dioxide(CO2)have aroused significant concerns at the global scale due to rapid economic growth in industries and other fields.Therefore,CO2 capture,use,and storage have become particularly important.In this review,general background and methods for CO2 capture and separation,in particular,on ionic liquids(ILs)-based solvents and materials,are discussed.Comprehensive sur-veys of ILs for CO2 absorption are presented,which focused mainly on experimental researches,and then the concept is extended to functionalized absorbents and recent developments for CO2 capture.Major advantages and disadvantages of amines-based and ILs-based absorbents are discussed in this review.Solutions of traditional amines(MEA,MDEA,DEA,AMP,PZ,etc.)and ILs(conventional ILs,functionalized ILs,etc.)are summarized.Moreover,research progresses on CO2 separation are also introduced focusing mainly on amines and ILs-based membranes(e.g.supported amines membranes,SILMs).Futhermore,the fixation of CO2 into cyclic carbonates catalyzed by ILs(pure ILs,complex catalyst system with ILs,supported ILs,etc.)is summarized,clearly explaining the mechanism of CO2 fixation with ILs.Finally,exploration of some recent studies about CO2 capture and conversion by ILs and challenges for further progress are presented and related suggestions are put forward.

Abstract:This review mainly focuses on different types of absorbers that absorb CO2 emitted primarily from stationary point sources such as refineries, various industries and power plants. Absorption of CO2 by nanofluids, nanocrystals and by two types of membranes: namely, hollow fibre membrane and omniphobic membrane to reduce CO2 emission at the point source are discussed. Potential applications of the omniphobic membrane as CO2 absorbers are also highlighted. The applications of nanofluids for the absorption of CO2 in presence of nanoparticles made up of SiO2 and Al2O3 are also discussed. Moreover, the absorption of CO2 by nanocrystals like amin-based cellulose nanocrystals and amino silane-grafted cellulose nanocrystals are discussed. The present review is divided into four sections; the first section covers the introduction, in the second section different types of membranes for CO2 absorption their properties and designs are discussed, the third section describes the applications of various nanocrystals towards CO2 absorption and the fourth section nanofluids, their absorption capacities and different properties like bubble visualization are discussed. In future researchers need to focus on the modification of membrane as well nanomaterials used in the development of absorption of CO2 gas, by improving the active mass transfer, flow rate of absorbent, membrane mass flux etc. This can be done by doping metals for the formation of suitable nanofluids and nanocrystals. Furthermore, formation of nanocomposites by using suitable nanomaterials for the preparation of highly efficient membrane for CO2 capture technologies are discussed.Graphical abstract

Abstract:As atmospheric CO 2 levels rise, the development of physical or chemical adsorbents for CO 2 capture and separation is of great importance on the way towards a sustainable low-carbon future. Porous organic polymers are promising candidates for CO 2 capture materials owing to their structural flexibility, high surface area, and high stability. In this review, we highlight high-performance porous organic polymers for CO 2 capture and summarize the strategies to enhance CO 2 uptake and selectivity, such as increasing surface area, increasing interaction between porous organic polymers and CO 2 , and pore surface functionalization.

Experimental Study on Comprehensive Carbon Capture Performance of TETA-based Nanofluids with Surfactants

Abstract:Absorbents have become a vital factor in determining the performance of chemical absorption technique for CO2 capture. In recent years, amine-based nanofluids have shown a promising potential to develop high-performance absorbents. Thus, a bubbling reaction system was implemented to comprehensively study the CO2 capture properties of TETA-based nanofluids in this work. Three kinds of nanoparticles and surfactants were adopted to prepare nanofluids. The important parameters, such as ultrasonic vibration time, particle size and surfactants mass fraction, were considered to evaluate the comprehensive CO2 capture performance. It was found that nanofluids shows better CO2 capture performance than blank TETA solutions, which is mainly due to the enhancement of liquid-phase turbulence and the microscopic motion of nanoparticles. 1.0 h is considered as the most reasonable ultrasonic time for CO2 absorption in this experimentation. There is an optimal SiO2-nanoparticle mass fraction of 0.10 wt.%, the enhancement factors of ab/desorption (E-ab and E-de) can respectively increase up to 1.29 and 1.23. The larger size can reduce the relative particle surface area and energy, 45 nm SiO2-nanofluids show lower energy consumption when the CO2-loading reaches alpha(s). Enhancement factors of both ab/desorption for TiO2 and SiO2 are very close and evidently higher than Al2O3 due to the nanoparticles' different CO2 adsorption performance. The addition of surfactant C-Na can effectively promote the mass transfer performance of nanofluids, but Triton X-100 and SDBS will cause inhibition effect when mass fraction exceeds 0.01 wt.%.

Abstract:The globe climate change caused by greenhouse gas has become world wide concerned issue. As one of the most important greenhouse gas, CO 2 capture and sequestration to reduce its release to atmosphere is of critical importance. This paper reviewed the current status of the development of CO 2 capture technology, summarized CO 2 absorption into common organic amine, e.g., monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, N-methyldiethanolamine, 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol and the mixture solution. The reaction mechanism and kinetics of CO 2 absorption into amines were also described. And the present situation of application was introduced. Finally, it was predicted that the complex system by organic amines and other absorbent may be the trend of CO 2 absorption in future.

Abstract:This study investigates methods to enhance the efficiency of CO2 capture using organic amine absorption and compares the performance of traditional and novel amine solvents. It reviews various single-component and mixed amine absorbents, as well as catalysts used in these methods, highlighting the superiority of mixed amine absorbents over single-component amine absorbents in CO2 absorption and desorption. Additionally, the study explores the catalytic mechanisms and effects of catalysts in the CO2 absorption/desorption process with amine solvents and provides an outlook on future research directions. The aim is to promote the widespread adoption of organic amine absorption technology in industrial applications and to contribute to the development of more sustainable and efficient CO2 capture technologies.

Abstract:The persistent increase in atmospheric CO2 from anthropogenic sources makes research directed toward carbon capture and storage imperative. Current liquid amine absorption technology has several drawbacks including hazardous byproducts and a high-energy requirement for regeneration; therefore, research is ongoing to develop more practical methods for capturing CO2 in postcombustion scenarios. The unique properties of carbon-based materials make them specifically promising for CO2 adsorption at low temperature and moderate to high partial pressure. This critical review aims to highlight the development of carbon-based solid sorbents for postcombustion CO2 capture. Specifically, it provides an overview of postcombustion CO2 capture processes with solid adsorbents and discusses a variety of carbon-based materials that could be used. This review focuses on low-cost pyrogenic carbon, activated carbon (AC), and metal-carbon composites for CO2 capture. Further, it touches upon the recent progress made to develop metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and carbon nanomaterials and their general CO2 sorption potential.

Abstract:The search for a better carbon dioxide (CO(2) ) capture material is attracting significant attention because of an increase in anthropogenic emissions. Porous materials are considered to be among the most promising candidates. A series of porous, nitrogen-doped carbons for CO(2) capture have been developed by using high-yield carbonization reactions from task-specific ionic liquid (TSIL) precursors. Owing to strong interactions between the CO(2) molecules and nitrogen-containing basic sites within the carbon framework, the porous nitrogen-doped compound derived from the carbonization of a TSIL at 500 °C, CN500, exhibits an exceptional CO(2) absorption capacity of 193 mg of CO(2) per g sorbent (4.39 mmol g(-1) at 0 °C and 1 bar), which demonstrates a significantly higher capacity than previously reported adsorbents. The application of TSILs as precursors for porous materials provides a new avenue for the development of improved materials for carbon capture.

Abstract:CO2 capture and storage (CCS) receives wordwide attention because the rising emission of CO2 from fossil fuels is threatening economies, environments, and human health. Ionic liquids address new opportunities for carbon capture because of their promising and unique properties, such as negligible vapor pressures, high thermal stabilities, excellent CO2 solubilities, and tunable properties. In this review, we summerized the recent advances in the chemisorption of CO2 using functionalized ionic liquids. It is of great importance to tune the anion structures, including amino acid anions, azole anions, and phenol anions because the anion moieties of ionic liquids usually play a dominant role in the absorption performance of CO2. Strategies for efficient CO2 capture, energy-saving release, and rapid absorption kinetics are present. The absorption mechanism was studied through a combination of spectroscopic investigation, and theoretical calculation. The recent developments in carbon capture by non-amino anion-functionalized ionic liquids present limitless potential to enhance the absorption performance of CO2. Some new concepts, such as multiple site cooperative interactions, the effect of enthalpy, and phase-change ionic liquids, open a door for improving CO2 capture by tuning the specific structure of the ionic liquid.

Abstract:Recently, carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage (CCS) technology has been a hot research topic since CO2 emissions are one of the most important reasons of global warming and climate change. In this study, CO2 absorption system was established to study the chemical absorption process of CO2 in MEA solution with nano-particles. This paper mainly aims to study the mass transfer enhancement with the presence of nano-particles in the CO2 absorption process. The nano-fluids used in this work were prepared by the ultrasonic treatment without any surfactants. It was found that the CO2 absorption rate could be enhanced by up to 8% with the presence of nano-particles compared to the pure MEA solution.
Research Progress on Amine Absorbent for CO2 Capture from Flue Gas

Abstract:[Introduction] Chemical absorption based on amines is the most mature technology for post-combustion CO2 capture. However, this technology has the drawback of high energy cost, and developing new amine absorbent as an alternative of monoethanolamine (MEA) solution will be an important method to deal with this problem. [Method] In this review, the amine absorbent was classified into four categories according to the compositions, namely single amine absorbent, blended amine absorbent, phase-change amine absorbent and water-lean amine absorbent. The technological characteristics and research situation of these absorbents were introduced. [Result] The blended amines combine the advantages of different single amine, showing good CO2 capture performance with high reaction rate, high absorption capacity and low energy cost. Phase-change amine absorbent and water-lean amine absorbent are the new generation of absorbents, which have great potential, but still need to be further studied and improved. [Conclusion] Therefore, blended amine is a more mature solvent which has better advantages in industrial application in the near term.

Abstract:Absorption and desorption with faster kinetics are capable of reducing the size of absorber and stripper, and hence reducing the total cost of CO2 removal. In this work, we introduced nanoparticles to enhance the CO2 absorption and desorption with aqueous amine solutions. It is verified that particle Brownian movement and convective motion induced by Brownian movement contribute to the increase in liquid-side mass transfer coefficient. We investigated the effects of nanoparticles on three different kinds of solutions (30 % MEA, 30 % MDEA, and 1.5 mol/L PZ) and find that the corresponding influence of nanoparticles is quite different. We attribute the differences to the viscosities of solutions, which are likely to have significant influence on CO2 diffusion. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2, CuO nanoparticles on the enhancement of the solvent regeneration. Solvent with TiO2 shows the highest desorption ability, following by CuO, SiO2, and Al2O3.

Abstract:The urgency of dealing with global climate change caused by greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions is increasing as the carbon dioxide(CO2) concentration in the atmosphere has reached a record high value of 416 ppm(parts per million). Technologies that remove CO2 from the surrounding air(direct air capture, DAC) could result in negative carbon emissions, and thus attracts increasing attention. The steady technical progress in adsorption-based CO2 separation greatly advanced the DAC, which largely relies on advanced sorbent materials. This review focuses on the latest development of porous solids for air capture; first discussed the main types of sorbents for air capture, which include porous carbons, zeolites, silica materials, and metal-organic frameworks(MOFs), particularly their modified counterparts. Then, we evaluated their performances, including uptake and selectivity under dry and humid CO2 streams for practical DAC application. Finally, a brief outlook on remaining challenges and potential directions for future DAC development is given.
