Abstract:A statistical analysis of 132 supernovae discovered from 1885 to December 1963 according to the types of galaxies in which they appeared and the types of supernovae is given. The following conclusions concerning the correlation between supernovae and types of galaxies and the relative frequency of supernovae are obtained. 1.The majority of observed supernovae appeared in normal and barred spirals (S and SB),among which 4/5 exploded in the former and the rest occurred in the lat- ter; 2.The supernovae appearing in late normal spirals (Sc) and late barred spirals (SBc) constitute 56% of the total number of supernovae under study; 3.77% of the type Ⅰ supernovae appeared in normal and barred spirals, more than half of them occurred among the late types (Sc+SBc).It seems that there exists a tendency for the frequency of outbursts of type Ⅰ supernovae to be independent of galaxy types; 4.The relative frequency of supernovae among the irregular galaxies (Irr) might support the recent view that type Ⅰ supernovae are also Population I objects; 5.The explosions of supernovae of types Ⅱ—Ⅴ all occurred in normal spirals, and most of them appeared in late type spirals (Sc).This agrees with the view that type Ⅱ supernovae are members of Population I. A catalogue of 144 supernovae recorded since 1885 up to March 1964 is given in the accompanying list.
