Abstract:The concentration of hydrogen in oxygen (HTO) is a crucial factor in determining the load limit of alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) due to the risk of explosion with high HTO levels. In this study, we analysed the impact of circulating electrolytes, carrying dissolved gas, on HTO in a home-designed zero-gap alkaline water electrolysis system, operating at atmospheric pressure and constant temperature. By comparing the experimental results from mixed and separated cycles, we found that the amount of dissolved hydrogen in the electrolyte significantly contributes to HTO. We then developed a theoretical model to predict HTO values and experimentally confirmed a linear relationship between the HTO and the ratio of electrolyte circulation to gas production (QL/ QO2). Based on this evidence, we proposed a new electrolyte circulation control strategy that reduces the HTO value by as much as 63.56%. These findings could help overcome the load limit of alkaline water electrolysis systems, which is crucial for their large-scale application.
