Abstract:In recent years, numerous photocatalysts and electrocatalysts have been developed to address energy and environmental issues, however, some properties such as low efficiency and easy charge recombination limit their applications. Hence, it is imperative to design and explore new catalytic techniques that include non‐photoresponsive catalysts. Here, recent advances in exploiting diverse catalytic techniques that can be used in dark environments, including piezocatalysis, thermocatalysis, pyrocatalysis, tribocatalysis and hybrid catalysis (piezocatalysis with pyrocatalysis and tribocatalysis with pyrocatalysis) are summarized. The overall mechanism of each catalytic technique and its applications in different fields such as energy generation, environmental remediation, and carbon dioxide reduction are discussed. Abstract:Photocatalysis,which is the catalyzation of redox reactions via the use of energy obtained from light sources,is a topic that has garnered a lot of attention in recent years as a means of addressing the environmental and economic issues plaguing society today.Of particular interest are photosynthesis can potentially mimic a variety of vital reactions,many of which hold the key to develop sustainable energy economy.In light of this,many of the technological and procedural advancements that have recently occurred in the field are discussed in this review,namely those linked to:(1) photocatalysts made from metal oxides,nitride,and sulfides;(2) photocatalysis via polymeric carbon nitride(PCN);and(3) general advances and mechanistic insights related to TiO 2 -based catalysts.The challenges and opportunities that have arisen over the past few years are discussed in detail.Basic concepts and experimental procedures which could be useful for eventually overcoming the problems associated with photocatalysis are presented herein.

Abstract:Nowadays, the rapid development of the social economy inevitably leads to global energy and environmental crisis. For this reason, more and more scholars focus on the development of photocatalysis and/or electrocatalysis technology for the advantage in the sustainable production of high-value-added products, and the high efficiency in pollutants remediation. Although there is plenty of outstanding research has been put forward continuously, most of them focuses on catalysis performance and reaction mechanisms in laboratory conditions. Realizing industrial application of photo/electrocatalytic processes is still a challenge that needs to be overcome by social demand. In this regard, this review comprehensively summarized several explorations in the field of photo/electrocatalytic reduction towards potential industrial applications in recent years. Special attention is paid to the successful attempts and the current status of photo/electrocatalytic water splitting, carbon dioxide conversion, resource utilization from waste, etc., by using advanced reactors. The key problems and challenges of photo/electrocatalysis in future industrial practice are also discussed, and the possible development directions are also pointed out from the industry view.

Abstract:Using solar energy to catalyse photo-driven processes to address the energy crisis and environmental pollution plays a role in the path to a sustainable society. Many oxide-based materials, especially perovskite oxides, have been widely investigated as catalysts for photocatalysis in energy and environment because of the low-cost and earth-abundant and good performance. At this stage, there is a need to present a scientific-based evaluation of the technologies developed so far and identify the most sustainable technologies and the existing limitations and opportunities for their commercialisation. This work comprehensively investigated the outcomes using various scientometric indices on perovskite oxide-based photo(electro)catalysts for water splitting, nitrogen fixation, carbon dioxide conversion, organic pollutant degradation, current trends and advances in the field. According to the results achieved, efforts in both energy and environment based on perovskite oxides have been initiated in the 1990s and accelerated since the 2010s. China and the United States were identified as the most contributing countries. Based on the results achieved in this study, the main milestones and current trends in the development of this field have been identified. The aim of this research is to provide useful guidelines for the further investigation of perovskite oxide-based catalysts for photoelectrocatalysis and photocatalysis both in energy and environment on the applications such as water splitting, nitrogen fixation, carbon dioxide conversion, and wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Increasing global energy consumption and environmental pollution make the use of new energy sources and environmentally friendly technologies essential to meet the diverse needs of industries. Photoelectrocatalysis is a promising method of utilising solar and electrical energy for various catalytic reactions with significant environmental and energy saving benefits. And photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) are two catalytic reactions with great potential for energy and environmental applications. PEC OER is critical for renewable energy technologies for water oxidation and other related oxidation reactions. PEC CO2RR converts carbon dioxide into high-value products via a catalyst, enabling the rational use of carbon dioxide and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Both technologies are efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable. However, further research and optimisation are needed to promote the industrial application of both technologies for energy conversion and environmental protection. This paper reviews the research progress of PEC CO2RR and OER catalysts in recent years, including detailed descriptions of catalyst types, reaction mechanisms and performance tests. Finally, the paper considers the future trends and prospects of PEC technology, providing new insights into the technology and research directions for PEC OER and CO2RR catalysts.

Abstract:The development of electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices (e.g., fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and water splitting) offers new opportunities to address global energy challenges; however, development is limited by the lack of suitable electrocatalysts to drive electrode reactions. To overcome this limitation, much effort has been devoted to advancing both fundamental understanding and practical application of electrocatalysis-related reactions, such as oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, etc. This Perspective covers the state-of-the-art technologies in the research and development of multifunctional electrocatalysts with a special emphasis on novel design strategies and a deeper discussion of the structure-activity-performance correlations. Future challenges as well as new opportunities in this exciting field are also discussed. The Perspective offers scientific ideas and sheds new light on multifunctional nanomaterial design and energy device performance optimization leading to efficient electrochemical energy conversion as power sources.

Abstract:Increasing demand for energy and environmental degradation are the most serious problems facing the man. An interesting issue that can contribute to solving these problems is the use of photocatalysis. According to literature, solar energy in the presence of a photocatalyst can effectively (i) be converted into electricity/fuel, (ii) break down chemical and microbial pollutants, and (iii) help water purification. Therefore, the search for new, efficient, and stable photocatalysts with high application potential is a point of great interest. The photocatalysts must be characterized by the ability to absorb radiation from a wide spectral range of light, the appropriate position of the semiconductor energy bands in relation to the redox reaction potentials, and the long diffusion path of charge carriers, besides the thermodynamic, electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical stabilities. Meeting these requirements by semiconductors is very difficult. Therefore, efforts are being made to increase the efficiency of photo processes by changing the electron structure, surface morphology, and crystal structure of semiconductors. This paper reviews the recent literature covering the synthesis and application of nanomaterials in photocatalysis.

Abstract:During the past few decades, photocatalysis as a green and sustainable technology has received increasing attention owing to its potential to solve energy and environmental problems. For the purpose of obtaining highly efficient and low-cost photocatalysts, various metal-free photocatalytic materials have been designed and developed in recent years for energy conversion and environmental purification because of their unique properties and characteristics. This critical review presents the recent crucial applications and progress in metal-free photocatalysis, including photocatalytic water reduction for H-2 evolution, photocatalytic CO2 reduction, photoremoval of NOx, photodegradation of pollutants and so on. The review also ends with some study highlights and suggestions for future research topics. We hope this review can facilitate deep-level investigation on the subject and provide new opportunities to develop metal-free photocatalytic materials with other important applications in the future.

Abstract:<p>The exploration of catalysts for energy conversion lies at the center of sustainable development. The combination of experimental and computational approaches can provide insights into the inner laws between the catalytic performance and the structural and electronic properties of catalysts. Owing to the inherent advantages of 2D materials over their 3D counterparts, including high specific surface area and abundant surface defects that could provide sufficient active sites, 2D materials are promising candidates and have attracted wide interest in catalysis. Importantly, 2D materials are the most widely computationally investigated models with which to relate computational prediction with experimental confirmation conveniently. Recently, more 2D catalysts have been prepared in experiments while more accurate computational methods have been used to disclose catalytic performance, and explore the mechanism at an atomic level. In this review, recent advances are summarized related to the development and design of 2D electro/photocatalysts. The main emphasis is put on the unique properties of 2D catalysts investigated by the combination of experiments and computations. Computational methods closer to experimental environments are introduced with particular attention to bridge the gap between experiments and computations. In addition, the challenges of computations and experiments are also discussed for 2D catalysts.</p>

Abstract:Harmful contaminants and microorganisms in the environment have threatened ecological security and human health. Detecting and removing these pollutants with a simple and high-efficiency method is significantly essential. Compared to conventional sensing and eliminating routes, photoelectrocatalysis (PEC), as a recently arisen pathway, combines the advantages of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis, and unfolds a novel platform. The PEC activity is strongly linked to the composition and morphology characteristics of photosensitive semiconductor. Hence, much attention has been paid to the rational fabrication and modification of high-efficiency photoelectrocatalysts. Herein, we offer an all-around review on the design strategies of photoelectrocatalysts, including ion doping and constructing heterojunctions as well as some other methods like vacancy induction, surface treatment, crystal plane regulation, size and morphology control. The recent advances for environmental applications of these photoelectrocatalysts in PEC system involving pollutants sensing, pollutants removal, and microbial inactivation are expounded. Besides, the functional mechanisms and performance assessment of the established PEC system are discussed. More importantly, the challenges and prospects of future research are put forward. This review makes clear the application of PEC in the field of environment, and provides unique insights for the future research direction.

Abstract:Single-atom photocatalysts inject new vitality into the field of photocatalysis. Moreover, due to their unique properties and advantages, single-atom photocatalysts have tremendous potential to address energy crises and environmental pollution. However, the understanding of single-atom photocatalysts is still incomplete and mostly at an early stage. Therefore, there is an urgent need to summarize the advanced progress of single-atom photocatalysts for energy conversion and environmental remediation. In this review, we first introduce the mechanism of single-atom photocatalysis in environmental remediation and energy conversion. Then, we summarize the synthesis and characterization techniques of single-atom photocatalysts, which are crucial for a deeper understanding of the coordination environment and action mechanism of single-atom photocatalysts. Subsequently, we review the applications of single-atom photocatalysts in environmental remediation and energy conversion. Last but not least, we summarize the current status and challenges of single-atom photocatalysts. We hope that this review will provide new insights into the research of single-atom photocatalysts and promote their further development.

Abstract:Photocatalytic technique is considered a promising energy conversion passway to alleviate energy crisis and environmental issues. Carbon dots as emerging photocatalysts or cocatalysts with outstanding physicochemical properties are widely applied in photocatalytic hydrogen generation, CO2 reduction, nitrogen fixation, pollutant degradation or organic synthesis, favoring a sustainable lifestyle based on photocatalytic techniques in the future. Seeking clean energy as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels is the inevitable choice to realize the sustainable development of the society. Photocatalytic technique is considered a promising energy conversion approach to store the abundant solar energy into other wieldy energy carriers like chemical energy. Carbon dots, as a class of fascinating carbon nanomaterials, have already become the hotspots in numerous photoelectric researching fields and particularly drawn keen interests as metal‐free photocatalysts owing to strong UV–vis optical absorption, tunable energy‐level configuration, superior charge transfer ability, excellent physicochemical stability, facile fabrication, low toxicity, and high solubility. In this review, the classification, microstructures, general synthetic methods, optical and photoelectrical properties of carbon dots are systematically summarized. In addition, recent advances of carbon dots based photoinduced reactions including photodegradation, photocatalytic hydrogen generation, CO2 conversion, N2 fixation, and photochemical synthesis are highlighted in detail, deep insights into the roles of carbon dots in various systems combining with the photocatalytic mechanisms are provided. Finally, several critical issues remaining in photocatalysis field are also proposed.

Abstract:The exploration of clean and renewable resources, such as hydrogen (H-2), to replace fossil fuel represents a sustainable way to deal with the energy crisis. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) process is considered to be a sustainable approach for H-2 production via water splitting; however, the efficiency of the PEC process remains low because of the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the photoanode. To overcome this issue, substitution of OER with thermodynamically more favorable and kinetically faster oxidation reactions would be attractive, and this can facilitate H-2 evolution and produce value-added chemicals simultaneously. In particular, photoanode transformations of renewable biomass, organics, and plastic waste have stimulated increasing interest. In this review, we focus on PEC transformations of the aforementioned substrates into different valuable products together with H-2 production, showing the oxidation pathways of representative substrates in each category, catalyst design principles, and structure-activity relationship. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities for the PEC strategy are proposed.
