Abstract:To tackle the grand twin challenges of sustainable energy supply and climate change, Small Structures of the advanced catalysts can play a central role in not only promoting the energy conversion such as green hydrogen production and energy storage, but also mitigating green-house gas threats for value-added fuel conversion. Catalysis, one of the most active and diversified research fields, is pivotal to achieving the zero-emission target in the coming decades. The significant advancements have been witnessed in material design, experimental technology, and fundamental knowledge. To document the state-of-the-art of these advances, this Special Issue features 7 research articles and 8 reviews, covering a broad spectrum of the advanced catalysis for renewable energy conversion and storage: electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, and thermal catalysis. Focusing on water splitting reactions for green hydrogen production, there are three review articles about the design of new catalysts including 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (Q Zhang et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200109) and Ni-based MOFs (D H Taffa et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200263), and advances in in situ characterization platforms (J-F Li et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200201). Four research articles introduce new photocatalytic hydrogen processes based on mesoporous semiconductors (R Marschall et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200184) and 2D carbon nitride catalysts (L Wang et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200264), photoelectrochemical water oxidation using doped titania nanotubes (K Maeda et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200229), and porous carbon based electrocatalytic water splitting reactions (Y Yamauchi et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200235). B-Y Xia et al. present their perspectives on water splitting at a larger scale, discussing the challenges and strategies for proton-exchange-membrane-based water electrolyzers (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200130). To mitigate the carbon dioxide impact on our environment, H Jang and co-workers review single-atom catalyst design for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200236), and R Xu et al. present a research article on the 2D covalent organic framework catalysts for CO2-to-CO conversion (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200233). J Scott's team focuses on the conversion of CO2 to valuable light olefins (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200285). Relating to the concept of catalytic process for value-added products, G Wu and co-workers present the electrochemical nitrate conversion to ammonia (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200202), whereas J Liang and co-workers provide a critical overview on the electrocatalytic ammonia oxidation reactions (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200266). In a research article, K Nakajima's team demonstrate their strategy to catalytic de-hydration of glucose to hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200224). By using the concept of synergistic catalysis, B-Q Li, Q Zhang, and co-workers investigate high-performing catalysts for an energy storage system of lithium-sulfur batteries (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200205). The guest editors do wish this special issue can shed light on the catalytic reaction mechanism and understanding of rational catalyst design in this fast-growing research field. We believe that the sustained research effort in rational Small Structure innovation would make big impact on sustainable energy supply and climate change.

Abstract:<p>The exploration of catalysts for energy conversion lies at the center of sustainable development. The combination of experimental and computational approaches can provide insights into the inner laws between the catalytic performance and the structural and electronic properties of catalysts. Owing to the inherent advantages of 2D materials over their 3D counterparts, including high specific surface area and abundant surface defects that could provide sufficient active sites, 2D materials are promising candidates and have attracted wide interest in catalysis. Importantly, 2D materials are the most widely computationally investigated models with which to relate computational prediction with experimental confirmation conveniently. Recently, more 2D catalysts have been prepared in experiments while more accurate computational methods have been used to disclose catalytic performance, and explore the mechanism at an atomic level. In this review, recent advances are summarized related to the development and design of 2D electro/photocatalysts. The main emphasis is put on the unique properties of 2D catalysts investigated by the combination of experiments and computations. Computational methods closer to experimental environments are introduced with particular attention to bridge the gap between experiments and computations. In addition, the challenges of computations and experiments are also discussed for 2D catalysts.</p>

Abstract:Photocatalysis promises a solution to challenges associated with the intermittent nature of sunlight which is considered as renewable and ultimate energy source to power activities on Earth. This review aims to provide a broad overview of the field. Insight into natural photosynthesis is discussed first, which provides a scientific basis for most efforts on photocatalysis. Afterwards, the details of four existing types of photocatalysis are presented, namely photosynthesis by plants, photosynthesis by microalgae, photocatalysis by suspension and photoelectrocatalysis. Detailed analyses of simple photocatalysts and integrated photocatalytic systems are followed to shed light on the different functionalities of different components in a working photocatalyst. Special attention is given to the roles played by surface and interface chemical phenomena. Lastly, perspectives on artificial photosynthesis are discussed briefly at the end. Photocatalysis lies at the heart of solar utilization, allowing facile solar energy harvesting, conversion, and storage at the same time. Artificial photocatalysis are systematically reviewed and comparative analysis of surface and interface of photocatalyst is provided in this review.

Abstract:Electrochemical processes for renewable energy conversion and generation represent promising pathways for lowering our dependence on fossil fuels yet critically depend on the efficiency of applied electrocatalysts, thus attracting considerable interest in the development of highly active and robust electrocatalysts for practical applications. In this review, we discuss recent progress in promoting electrocatalysis for renewable energy technologies based on surface or interface engineering with special emphasis on the geometric structures. We first introduce the state-of-the-art engineering methods for achieving the desired surface or interface and correlate these structures with their catalytic performances. Then, we describe classic examples of rational surfaces and interfaces for tuning metallic nanomaterials for several key catalytic reactions in renewable energy technologies, including the hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions, oxygen reduction and evolution reactions, methanol oxidation reaction, and electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction. Finally, we provide personal perspectives to highlight the challenges and opportunities for metallic electrocatalysts in terms of catalysis-driven surface and interface engineering.

Abstract:Photocatalysis,which is the catalyzation of redox reactions via the use of energy obtained from light sources,is a topic that has garnered a lot of attention in recent years as a means of addressing the environmental and economic issues plaguing society today.Of particular interest are photosynthesis can potentially mimic a variety of vital reactions,many of which hold the key to develop sustainable energy economy.In light of this,many of the technological and procedural advancements that have recently occurred in the field are discussed in this review,namely those linked to:(1) photocatalysts made from metal oxides,nitride,and sulfides;(2) photocatalysis via polymeric carbon nitride(PCN);and(3) general advances and mechanistic insights related to TiO 2 -based catalysts.The challenges and opportunities that have arisen over the past few years are discussed in detail.Basic concepts and experimental procedures which could be useful for eventually overcoming the problems associated with photocatalysis are presented herein.

Abstract:With the development of the global economy, large amounts of fossil fuels are being burned, causing a severe energy crisis and climate change. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is a clean and environmentally friendly method to convert CO2 into hydrocarbon fuel, providing a feasible solution to the global energy crisis and climate problems. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction has three key steps: solar energy absorption, electron transfer, and CO2 catalytic reduction. The previous literature has obtained many significant results around the first two steps, while in the third step, there are few results due to the need to add a co-catalyst. In general, the co-catalysts have three essential roles: (1) promoting the separation of photoexcited electron–hole pairs, (2) inhibiting side reactions, and (3) improving the selectivity of target products. This paper summarizes different types of photocatalysts for photocatalytic CO2 reduction, the reaction mechanisms are illustrated, and the application prospects are prospected.

Abstract:In recent years, numerous photocatalysts and electrocatalysts have been developed to address energy and environmental issues, however, some properties such as low efficiency and easy charge recombination limit their applications. Hence, it is imperative to design and explore new catalytic techniques that include non‐photoresponsive catalysts. Here, recent advances in exploiting diverse catalytic techniques that can be used in dark environments, including piezocatalysis, thermocatalysis, pyrocatalysis, tribocatalysis and hybrid catalysis (piezocatalysis with pyrocatalysis and tribocatalysis with pyrocatalysis) are summarized. The overall mechanism of each catalytic technique and its applications in different fields such as energy generation, environmental remediation, and carbon dioxide reduction are discussed. Abstract:The development of electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices (e.g., fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and water splitting) offers new opportunities to address global energy challenges; however, development is limited by the lack of suitable electrocatalysts to drive electrode reactions. To overcome this limitation, much effort has been devoted to advancing both fundamental understanding and practical application of electrocatalysis-related reactions, such as oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, etc. This Perspective covers the state-of-the-art technologies in the research and development of multifunctional electrocatalysts with a special emphasis on novel design strategies and a deeper discussion of the structure-activity-performance correlations. Future challenges as well as new opportunities in this exciting field are also discussed. The Perspective offers scientific ideas and sheds new light on multifunctional nanomaterial design and energy device performance optimization leading to efficient electrochemical energy conversion as power sources.

Abstract:The activation and conversion of small molecules (H-2, O-2, H2O, CO2, N-2, CH3OH, and C2H5OH) in energy-related systems has attracted researchers' attentions around the world. The conversion of these molecules plays a key role in renewable energy storage and conversion systems, and for that, the electrocatalysis and photocatalysis processes are considered as clean and efficient strategies. Numerous materials are designed to promote the conversion process to satisfy the different requirements for efficiency and selectivity. Due to the flexible switching between Ce3+ and Ce4+ with rich oxygen defects, CeO2-based materials display excellent performance in all the related reaction processes. Herein, the CeO2-based electro(photo)catalysts according to different reactions are summarized. Specifically, the influence of material compositions, morphologies, and structures on catalytic performance is discussed, and the significant role of CeO2 is emphasized. Finally, several approaches are advocated to promote the development of CeO2-based electro(photo)catalysis and accelerate their industrial application.

Abstract:The Sun generates enough energy to power the Earth. However, solar energy should be stored into chemical energy to be conveniently used due to its low energy density and discontinuous radiation. In the last several years, photocatalysis and photoelectrochemistry for solar fuels have reattracted more and more governments’ and people’s interest from all over the world and become a very hot topic. If we utilize the abundant solar energy to convert CO2 into hydrocarbon fuels especially, it would address the problems of global climate change and solar energy storage at the same time. Recently, different new materials and ideas have been proposed and steady scientific progress has been done. However, it is still a key challenge to explore visible-light responsive materials with high photocatalytic activities. The special issue contains eight papers, where 6 papers are related to visible-light activity and 2 papers are related to UV activity.
