Abstract:The chromium-coated Zr alloy cladding (Zircaloy) is believed to exhibit excellent corrosion resistance during accident scenarios. The process of oxidizing Cr-coated Zircaloy leads to the creation of a thin layer of Cr2O3 2 O 3 oxide film, which enhances Zircaloy corrosion resistance by inhibiting the inward diffusion of O2-. 2- . Nevertheless, the ion diffusion mechanism during the oxidation of Cr-coated Zircaloy remains inadequately elucidated. Hence, it is imperative to analyze the diffusion and migration behavior of Cr3+ 3+ and O 2- within oxide layer films. In this study, high-temperature steam oxidation tests were conducted on Cr-coated Zircaloy, coupled with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, to investigate the diffusion behavior of Cr3+ 3+ and O 2- within oxide layers. The findings suggest that the growth of the Cr2O3 2 O 3 film hinges upon the diffusion of Cr3+ 3+ and O2 2- .Furthermore, the presence of a precipitated ZrO2 2 phase within the Cr coating expedites the diffusion of O 2- into the Zr substrate. Notably, the fitted k p values derived from oxidation experiments exhibit a robust correlation with those obtained from MD. Moreover, this study offers a comprehensive examination of ionic diffusion dynamics within oxide layers, laying a theoretical groundwork for exploring strategies aimed at mitigating corrosion in Cr-coated Zircaloy.
