Abstract:This study investigates the dynamics of opinion formation at both collective and individual levels within social networks. While sociological factors influencing collective opinion dynamics are well studied by sociologists, their quantitative analysis remains limited, and the evolution of individual opinions is often overlooked. To address this gap, we develop a novel multi-agent system model that integrates complex network topologies and sociological factors to simulate opinion dynamics. Our model elucidates three primary patterns of collective opinion: consensus, radicalization and polarization, and provides an analytical criticality depicting transitions between these states under varying social parameters. Additionally, we examine the evolution of individual opinions, revealing the formation of echo chambers and identifying the conditions under which individuals change their stances despite majority influence. These insights have practical implications for real-world applications, such as public opinion tuning. The findings underscore the importance of network structures and sociological influences in shaping opinion dynamics, offering a new paradigm for understanding and potentially guiding public opinion formation.
