Abstract:Research on the diffusion and dissolution of hydrogen on zinc surfaces doped with various elements remains scarce, despite it plays a crucial role in unraveling the degradation mechanisms of these alloys. To bridge this gap, first-principles calculations were employed to study the adsorption and diffusion behavior of hydrogen on both pristine and doped Zn(0001) surfaces. Our findings reveal that doped elements tend to preferentially substitute in the third layer, with their stability influenced by factors such as relative electronegativity and lattice distortion. In our investigation of the impact of dopant elements on the adsorption energy of hydrogen, we observed that the introduction of dopants enhances hydrogen adsorption. Utilizing the Crystal Orbital Hamilton Population (COHP) method, we reveal that surface doping with Ag, Ca, Sr, Li, and Mg increases the bond energy of Zn-H. Conversely, Cu-H and Ni-H bonds exhibit higher bond energies compared to a clean surface, resulting in lower adsorption energies. Finally, our investigation into hydrogen diffusion behavior revealed that the element Ni significantly hinders both diffusion and penetration of hydrogen.
