Abstract:Introducing an interface phase in nanocrystalline metals is an effective method to achieve excellent mechanical properties. However, the effect of interface phase structure and stability on deformation behavior has not been revealed deeply. Here, we fabricated Ni/X multilayer with Mo crystalline, metastable NiMo and stable SiOC amorphous interface phases. In-situ compression tests indicate that multilayer with metastable interface phase achieves a unique combination of strength, plasticity, and strain hardening. For Ni/Mo, when the slip systems of Ni and Mo are misaligned, dislocation is hindered by crystalline-crystalline interface, resulting in shear localization. For Ni/NiMo and Ni/SiOC, crystalline-amorphous interface efficiently hinders dislocation transmission to enhance strength and absorbs dislocations to achieve uniform deformation. Meanwhile, deformation-induces metastable NiMo amorphous crystallization which reduces dislocation absorption relative to stable SiOC, thereby increasing dislocation density and resulting in superior strain hardening ability of Ni/NiMo. This work guides to design of nanocrystalline materials with excellent mechanical properties.
