Abstract:Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a newcomer in supply chain area. With the help of RFID technology, real time information can be collected. Multi-agent technology is a popular way to address distributed supply chain management (SCM), and information sharing plays a key role in multi-agent system. To give multi-agent based model more power and facility, we present a RFID based multi-agent model, in which information synchronization is realized by employing RFID technology at item level. The RFID based multi-agent system is constructed, intra- and inter-coordination mechanism of this system are discussed.

Abstract:Recently, there has been growing interest in indoor localization, because numerous applications depend on the rapid and accurate position estimation of tagged objects. While RFID-based indoor localization is attractive, the need for a large-scale and high-density deployment of readers and reference tags is costly. Being the range-free localization, our schemes depend solely on mobile readers without reference tags or other devices, and it avoids the need of distance estimation according to RSSI or phase difference. We propose two novel algorithms, continuous scanning and category-based scheduling, for locating single and multiple tagged objects, respectively. Our primary experimental results show that the system can achieve high time efficiency and localization accuracy.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a tagless object detection and localization method implemented by a commercial radio frequency identification (RFID) system. Tags in the RFID system have important applications in indoor locating, and these tags are often affixed to the target object. But for some special situations, it is necessary to develop the object localization method without attached tags. We increase the diversity of the RFID communication channels by pasting tags around the location scene, thus we can obtain more information of the target object and meanwhile no attached tags are needed. The target reflectivity image inside the capture volume is constructed using non-uniform Fourier domain sampling. We simulate the reflectivity image in CST Studio Suite and test the method in read-scale rooms, where high-precision location is realized and the object contour can be observed.

Abstract:Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has successfully proven its potential for locating objects in a 3-dimensional (3D) space. Current RFID-based 3D localization is built on the ethos of striving for accuracy. This paper takes the first step toward efficient localization with high time efficiency and energy efficiency, which are important for accelerating positioning operation and prolonging system lifetime. To this end, we propose leveraging known locations of deployed reference readers and reference tags to probe as a few reference tags as sufficient for localization. Counter-intuitively, localization using fewer reference tags promises rather higher efficiency yet without necessarily sacrificing accuracy. We design efficient passive scheme and efficient active scheme for both typical RFID-based 3D localization scenarios, locating a target tag using reference readers/tags and locating a target reader using reference tags. We evaluate their performance through quantitative analysis and extensive simulation. The results show that the proposed schemes outperform existing schemes in time efficiency and energy efficiency by over 95% on average.

Abstract:A radio frequency identification (RFID) system is a special kind of sensor network to identify an object or a person using radio frequency transmission. A typical RFID system includes transponders (tags) and interrogators (readers): tags are attached to objects/persons, and readers communicate with the tags in their transmission ranges via radio signals. RFID systems have been gaining more and more popularity in areas such as supply chain management, automated identification systems, and any place requiring identifications of products or people. RFID technology is better than barcode in many ways, and may totally replace barcode in the future if certain technologies can be achieved such as low cost and protection of personal privacy. This paper provides a technology survey of RFID systems and various RFID applications. We also discuss five critical research issues: cost control, energy efficiency, privacy issue, multiple readers' interference, and security issue. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The technology of radio frequency automatic object identification is discussed. It utilizes microwave and Transmitterreceiver antenna to realize automatic identification of far distance object. The technology includes multichannel homodyne, reflection modulating without radio frequency source and beam powered by radio frequency energy. A system of radio frequency automatic object identification is developed. It operates at 915 MHz with 1. 5W output power. The RF card adopts the structure of planar dipole. The maximum identification distance is up to 10 meters, the data rate reaches 10 kbs. It can display automatically the data controlled by computer and print the report forms.

Abstract:The technologies used in the indoor localization mainly contain infrared propagation technique, IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN, Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs), and ultrasonic localization. Instead, Radio Frequency Identification(RFID) technique, with its numerous advantages of reasonable system cost, excellent location accuracy, strong anti-interference, contactless communications, convenient deployment and carry, has been widely used in indoor localization. From the point of RFID tags used in the indoor localization, the primary RFID-based indoor localization techniques are classified into three categories, namely, passive localization, active localization, and semi-passive localization. The analysis about the state of the art of the primary RFID-based localization algorithms is presented in detail, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each technique.

Meanwhile, as one of the research topics of the Internet of Things (IoT), Radio Frequency Identification also provides the possibility for the development and application scope of IoT. Based on the application principle of Radio Frequency Identification technology, this paper discusses the application of Radio Frequency Identification in the two fields of intelligent libraries and intelligent logistics through literature review and theoretical analysis. Through the analysis of the current situation of RFID application in the library management and logistics industry, this paper discusses the advantages and shortcomings of radio frequency identification technology, and according to the existing problems the future direction of development of the corresponding improvement proposals to promote the further improvement of the application of radio frequency identification technology.

Abstract:The misreading problem of passive ultra-high-frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) tag is a frequent problem in the field of librarianship. The existing solutions are usually with extra resource requirement, inaccuracy, and empiricism. To this end, under comprehensive analysis on the passive UHF RFID application in the librarianship scenario, we propose an innovative book-localization approach based on RFID localization. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can accurately capture the true position.

Abstract:RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is now attracting many interests for its bright future in commercial and daily use. For the low-frequency (LF, typically 125KHz) and the high-frequency (HF, typically 13.6MHz) RFIDs, the Readers have already come into our daily life out of their matured technologies, while the ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID Readers are still in the process for the reliability and functionality. This paper represents a systematic design of a UHF RFID reader. Received backscatter modulation waves (carrier wave frequency 915 MHz) are directly demodulated to baseband signals using the Zero IF technology. The reader is designed as a quadrature (I/Q) one, which can avoid null points of the received signals [41 and enhance the demodulation sensitivity.

The paper investigates the issues related to effective RFID dynamical deployment and RFID data management, and introduces an appropriate architecture for dealing with the problems described above.

Abstract:Shelf scanning is one of the most important processes for inventory management in a library, which is able to help library users find the misplaced books and pinpoint where they are. Traditional solutions suffer from intensive manual labor, long scanning delay, or high-cost infrastructure renewal, which is a great barrier to commercial adoption. In this paper, we propose an HF RFID system that can perform the shelf scanning automatically by combining robotics and RFID technology, where the mobile robot is used for replacing the library staff and the RFID is for locating the tagged books on the bookshelves. The biggest challenge is that the commodity HF RFID device cannot capture RF phase, which is a fine-grained metric with high resolution for locating. To address this problem, we break down the task of localization into two stages, tier-level localization and order estimation, and use fuzzy logic to model and estimate the tagged book’s position. We implement the system and deploy it into four libraries for practical use. Long-term extensive experimental results demonstrate that our system provides a finegrained book localization with an accuracy of a few centimeters.

Abstract:Wireless location sensing plays a critical role in the developing Internet of Things (IoT), which has been attracting increasing attention in both the academia and industry recently. Nowadays UHF Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), due to its long-range, inexpensive, multi-tag identification and battery-free sensing capability, has been widely applied for localization especially in intelligent manufacturing factories and warehouses. Inspired by the robustness against noise and multipath distortion of synthetic aperture radar, we present a rotating synthetic aperture RFID method for robot localization in this paper. Based on this method, a robot equipped with a rotating RFID antenna perceives the position of itself, so it is a smart transporter unit in manufacturing for searching and conveying objects. The robot estimates its positions based on synthetic aperture RFID with an indistinct trajectory. Rotation and multi-frequency technique improves the resolution and location accuracy. The theoretical ambiguity analysis is also proposed. We evaluate the performance with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) RFID devices and build a prototype system with cm-level mean accuracy.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the technology behind RFID systems, identify the applications of RFID in various industries, and discuss the technical challenges of RFID implementation and the corresponding strategies to overcome those challenges. Design/methodology/approach Comprehensive literature review and integration of the findings from literature. Findings Technical challenges of RFID implementation include tag cost, standards, tag and reader selection, data management, systems integration and security. The corresponding solution is suggested for each challenge. Research limitations/implications A survey type research is needed to validate the results. Practical implications This research offers useful technical guidance for companies which plan to implement RFID and we expect it to provide the motivation for much future research in this area. Originality/value As the infancy of RFID applications, few researches have existed to address the technical issues of RFID implementation. Our research filled this gap.

Multi-tag RFID System Enables Localization and Tracking

Abstract:In many applications, we have to locate and track the object. RFID technology has been widely adopted in logistics, one of whose most promising applications is to play an important role in high tracking accurately. In this paper, a new localization and tracking scheme by an antenna arranged in advance and multiple tags attached to the object has been proposed, a fine-grained backscatter positioning technique detects phase which is used to reflect positional relationship between the tag and the antenna, but challenged by its periodicity and tag's diversity. Some phase changes of multiple tags construct a series of velocity chains, and the relationship between velocity projections solve the velocity of the object. Our system exhibits several benefits : 1) Only arrange one antenna. 2) Battery-free RFID avoids increasing the burden of power and load on the mobile platform. Many experiments have been conducted on linear motion and nonlinear motion. Compared with the other two schemes, our scheme has obvious advantages in accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:We in this paper present, an RFID-based sensing system that supports miniature robots to perform agile tasks in everyday environments. 's unique capability is that it uses a single arbitrarily-deployed antenna to locate a target with sub-cm-level accuracy and identify its orientation to within few degrees. Compared with existing solutions which rely on either antenna arrays or multiple RFID readers, is cheap, compact, and applicable to miniature robots. The idea of is to stick an RFID tag on the robot (or its gripper) and use it as a moving "antenna" to locate the tags on the target. The core of this design is a novel technique which can build a "channel" between two commercial RFID tags. Such an inter-tag channel is proved to be highly sensitive to the change in inter-tag distance and is resistant to multipath. By leveraging this channel and the mobility of the robot, we emulate an antenna array and use it for fine-grained localization and orientation estimation. Our experiments show that achieves a median accuracy of 9.5mm and 3.1 degrees in 3D localization and orientation estimation. brings an eye-in-hand "camera" to miniature robots, supporting them to perform agile tasks in dark, cluttered, and occluded settings.

Abstract:Radio frequency identification (RFID) has become a key technology in the logistics and management industry, thanks to distinctive features such as the low cost of RFID tags, and the easiness of the RFID tags' deployment and integration within the items to be tracked. In consequence, RFID plays a fundamental role in the so-called digital factory or 4.0 Industry, aiming to increase the level of automatization of industrial processes. In addition, RFID has also been found to be of great help in improving the tracking of patients, medicines, and medical assets in hospitals, where the digitalization of these operations improves their efficiency and safety. This contribution reviews the state-of-the-art of RFID for e-Health applications, describing the contributions to improve medical services and discussing the limitations. In particular, it has been found that a lot of effort has been put into software development, but in most of the cases a detailed study of the physical layer (that is, the characterization of the RFID signals within the area where the system is deployed) is not properly conducted. This contribution describes a basic RFID system for tracking and managing assets in hospitals, aiming to provide additional details about implementation aspects that must be considered to ensure proper functionality of the system. Although the scope of the RFID system described in this contribution is restricted to a small area of the hospital, the architecture is fully scalable to cover the needs of the different medical services in the hospital. Ultra high-frequency (UHF) RFID technology is selected over the most extended near-field communication (NFC) and high-frequency (HF) RFID technology to minimize hardware infrastructure. In particular, UHF RFID also makes the coverage/reading area conformation easier by using different kinds of antennas. Information is stored in a database, which is accessed from end-user mobile devices (tablets, smartphones) where the position and status of the assets to be tracked are displayed.

Abstract:Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an emerging technology for automatic data capturing, enabling real time information visibility. It promises great potentials in many industries to improve logistics operational efficiency, to help reduce inventory, and to automate asset/item track and trace, etc. The RFID adoption in China is a highly concerned topic as China has become a world manufacturing center. In this paper, we have presented an overview for China's current RFID adoption status. Based on Rogers's DOI theory, a methodology is developed for analyzing RFID adoption in China. With this methodology, China's RFID adoption status is identified, and ways to speed up the rate of adoption are also suggested.
