Abstract:Exploiting radio frequency signals is promising for locating and tracking objects. Prior works focus on per-tag localization, in which each object is attached with one tag. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive localization and tracking scheme by attaching two RFID tags to one object. Instead of using per-tag localization pattern, adding one-more RFID tag to the object exhibits several benefits: 1) providing rich freedom in RFID reader's antenna spacing and placement; 2) supporting accurate calibration of the reader's antenna location and spacing, and 3) enabling fine-grained calculation on the orientation of the tags. All of these advantages ultimately improve the localization/tracking accuracy. Our extensive experimental results demonstrate that the average errors of localization and orientation of target tags are 6.415 cm and 1.330 degrees, respectively. Our results also verify that the reader's antenna geometry does have impact on tag positioning performance.
Multi-tag RFID System Enables Localization and Tracking

Abstract:In many applications, we have to locate and track the object. RFID technology has been widely adopted in logistics, one of whose most promising applications is to play an important role in high tracking accurately. In this paper, a new localization and tracking scheme by an antenna arranged in advance and multiple tags attached to the object has been proposed, a fine-grained backscatter positioning technique detects phase which is used to reflect positional relationship between the tag and the antenna, but challenged by its periodicity and tag's diversity. Some phase changes of multiple tags construct a series of velocity chains, and the relationship between velocity projections solve the velocity of the object. Our system exhibits several benefits : 1) Only arrange one antenna. 2) Battery-free RFID avoids increasing the burden of power and load on the mobile platform. Many experiments have been conducted on linear motion and nonlinear motion. Compared with the other two schemes, our scheme has obvious advantages in accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has successfully proven its potential for locating objects in a 3-dimensional (3D) space. Current RFID-based 3D localization is built on the ethos of striving for accuracy. This paper takes the first step toward efficient localization with high time efficiency and energy efficiency, which are important for accelerating positioning operation and prolonging system lifetime. To this end, we propose leveraging known locations of deployed reference readers and reference tags to probe as a few reference tags as sufficient for localization. Counter-intuitively, localization using fewer reference tags promises rather higher efficiency yet without necessarily sacrificing accuracy. We design efficient passive scheme and efficient active scheme for both typical RFID-based 3D localization scenarios, locating a target tag using reference readers/tags and locating a target reader using reference tags. We evaluate their performance through quantitative analysis and extensive simulation. The results show that the proposed schemes outperform existing schemes in time efficiency and energy efficiency by over 95% on average.

Abstract:Recently, there has been growing interest in indoor localization, because numerous applications depend on the rapid and accurate position estimation of tagged objects. While RFID-based indoor localization is attractive, the need for a large-scale and high-density deployment of readers and reference tags is costly. Being the range-free localization, our schemes depend solely on mobile readers without reference tags or other devices, and it avoids the need of distance estimation according to RSSI or phase difference. We propose two novel algorithms, continuous scanning and category-based scheduling, for locating single and multiple tagged objects, respectively. Our primary experimental results show that the system can achieve high time efficiency and localization accuracy.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a tagless object detection and localization method implemented by a commercial radio frequency identification (RFID) system. Tags in the RFID system have important applications in indoor locating, and these tags are often affixed to the target object. But for some special situations, it is necessary to develop the object localization method without attached tags. We increase the diversity of the RFID communication channels by pasting tags around the location scene, thus we can obtain more information of the target object and meanwhile no attached tags are needed. The target reflectivity image inside the capture volume is constructed using non-uniform Fourier domain sampling. We simulate the reflectivity image in CST Studio Suite and test the method in read-scale rooms, where high-precision location is realized and the object contour can be observed.

Abstract:RFID is widely used in electronic identification and tracking. Both identity and location information are important in object tracking applications. Recent techniques in RFID localization generally use active tags and pay attention to RSS (received signal strength). As the signal processing of passive RFID is more complicated, RSS based localization of passive tags has a high error. Note that phase characteristics play an important role in signal propagation. This paper presents a method to locate passive RFID tags by estimating AOA (angle of arrival) using the phase difference. Modelling and experimental results show that AOA estimation by phase difference can be used to locate RFID tags accurately.

Abstract:We in this paper present, an RFID-based sensing system that supports miniature robots to perform agile tasks in everyday environments. 's unique capability is that it uses a single arbitrarily-deployed antenna to locate a target with sub-cm-level accuracy and identify its orientation to within few degrees. Compared with existing solutions which rely on either antenna arrays or multiple RFID readers, is cheap, compact, and applicable to miniature robots. The idea of is to stick an RFID tag on the robot (or its gripper) and use it as a moving "antenna" to locate the tags on the target. The core of this design is a novel technique which can build a "channel" between two commercial RFID tags. Such an inter-tag channel is proved to be highly sensitive to the change in inter-tag distance and is resistant to multipath. By leveraging this channel and the mobility of the robot, we emulate an antenna array and use it for fine-grained localization and orientation estimation. Our experiments show that achieves a median accuracy of 9.5mm and 3.1 degrees in 3D localization and orientation estimation. brings an eye-in-hand "camera" to miniature robots, supporting them to perform agile tasks in dark, cluttered, and occluded settings.

Abstract:We study a new problem, refined localization, in this paper. Refined localization calculates the location of an object in high precision, given that the object is in a relatively small region such as the surface of a table. Refined localization is useful in many cyber-physical systems such as industrial autonomous robots. Existing vision-based approaches suffer from several disadvantages, including good lighting conditions, line of sight, pre-learning process, and high computation overhead. Also vision-based approaches cannot differentiate objects with similar colors and shapes. This paper presents a new refined localization system, called Trio, which uses passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags for low cost and easy deployment. Trio provides a new angle to utilize RF interference for tag localization by modeling the equivalent circuits of coupled tags. We implement our prototype using commercial off-the-shelf RFID reader and tags. Extensive experiment results demonstrate that Trio effectively achieves high accuracy of refined localization, i.e., < 1 cm errors for several types of main stream tags.

Abstract:In resent years, providing location services for mobile targets in a closed environment has been a growing interest. In order to provide good localization and tracking performance for drones in GPS-denied scenarios, this paper proposes a multi-tag radio frequency identification (RFID) system that is easy to equip and does not take up the limited resources of the drone which is not susceptible to processor performance and cost constraints compared with computer vision based approaches. The passive RFID tags, no battery equipped, have an ultra-high resolution of millimeter level. We attach multiple tags to the drone and form multiple sets of virtual antenna arrays during motion, avoiding arranging redundant antennas in applications, and calibrating the speed chain to improve tracking performance. After combining the strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS) carried by the drone, we have established a coupled integration model that can suppress the drift error of SINS with time. The experiment was designed in bi-dimensional and three-dimensional scenarios, and the integrated positioning system based on SINS/RFID was evaluated. Finally, we discussed the impact of some parameters, this innovative approach is verified in real scenarios.

Abstract:In traditional radio-based localization methods, the target object has to carry a transmitter (e. g., active RFID), a receiver (e.g., 802.11 x detector), or a transceiver (e. g., sensor node). However, in some applications, such as safe guard systems, it is not possible to meet this precondition. In this paper, we propose a model of signal dynamics to allow the tracking of a transceiver-free object. Based on radio signal strength indicator (RSSI), which is readily available in wireless communication, three centralized tracking algorithms, and one distributed tracking algorithm are proposed to eliminate noise behaviors and improve accuracy. The midpoint and intersection algorithms can be applied to track a single object without calibration, while the best-cover algorithm has higher tracking accuracy but requires calibration. The probabilistic cover algorithm is based on distributed dynamic clustering. It can dramatically improve the localization accuracy when multiple objects are present. Our experimental test-bed is a grid sensor array based on MICA2 sensor nodes. The experimental results show that the localization accuracy for single object can reach about 0.8 m and for multiple objects is about 1 m.

Abstract:Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology has been widely used in passive RFID localization application due to its flexible deployment and low cost. However, current passive RFID localization systems cannot achieve both highly accurate and precise moving object localization task owing to tag collisions and variation of the behavior of tags. Most researchers increase the density of tag distribution to improve localization accuracy and then consider using either anti-collision process embedded in the hardware of the RFID reader or advanced localization algorithms to enhance localization precision. However, advanced anti-collision processes for RFID devices are challenged by the physical constraint characteristics of radio frequency; and improved localization algorithm cannot fundamentally reduce the impacts of tag collision on localization precision. This research work attempts to improve localization precision of a passive RFID localization system by using sparsely distributed RFID tags. This paper first defines a measure for accuracy and precision in a passive RFID localization system with regard to RFID tag distribution. An exponential-based function is then derived from experimental measurements, which reflects the relationship between RFID tag distribution and localization precision. This function shows that localization precision is mainly determined by tag density of RFID tag distribution. Based on the experimental findings, a sparse RFID tag distribution approach is proposed. The results show that in comparison with the conventional RFID tag distribution, passive RFID localization system with sparse RFID tag distribution can deliver a higher localization precision for the required accuracy.

Efficient localization based on imprecise anchors in RFID system

Abstract:With the rapid proliferation of RFID-based applications, RFID tags have been deployed into pervasive spaces in increasingly large numbers, e.g., the shelves of super markets are filled with tag-labeled items. Conventional localization schemes usually leverage precise anchor nodes to help compute the position of objects. However, it is usually difficult to find or deploy enough anchor nodes for accurate localization. In this paper, we propose solutions to locate the mobile users based on imprecise anchors in RFID systems. A large number of tags with approximate locations are used as anchor nodes to compute the user's locations. We thus present a time-efficient localization scheme to continuously tracking the mobile users. Experimental results indicate that our solutions can accurately locate the mobile users in a real-time approach. The improved method's accuracy is more than 30% better than the base solution.

Abstract:Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology brings many innovative applications. Of great importance to RFID applications in production economics is misplaced-tag pinpointing (MTP), because misplacement errors fail optimal inventory placement and thus significantly decrease profit. The existing MTP solution [1], originally proposed from a data-processing perspective, collects and processes a large amount of data. It suffers from time inefficiency (and energy-inefficiency as well if active tags are in use). The problem of finding efficient solutions for the MTP problem from the communication protocol design perspective has never been investigated before. In this paper, we propose a series of protocols toward efficient MTP solutions in large RFID systems. The proposed protocols detect misplaced tags using reader positions instead of tag positions to guarantee the efficiency and scalability as system scale grows, because RFID readers are much fewer than tags. Considering applications that employ active tags, we further propose a solution requiring responses from only a subset of tags in favor of energy saving. We also design a distributed protocol that enables each reader to independently detect misplaced tags. We then investigate how to apply the proposed protocols in scenarios with tag mobility. To evaluate the proposed protocols, we analyze their optimal performances to demonstrate their efficiency potential and also conduct extensive simulation experiments. The results show that the proposed protocols can significantly increase the time efficiency and the energy efficiency by over 70 percent on average when compared with the best existing work.
Complete and Fast Unknown Tag Identification in Large RFID Systems

Abstract:The RFID technology greatly improves efficiency of many applications including inventory control, object tracking, and supply chain management. In such applications, it is common that new objects are added into the system or existing objects are misplaced in wrong regions. When this happens, fast and complete identification of such tags is very important. We name this problem unknown tag identification, as these tags appear to be unknown by the reader(s) currently covering them. In this paper, we propose a series of protocols to identify unknown tags completely and fast. In these protocols, we develop several novel techniques to efficiently resolve collisions caused by known tags when identifying unknown tags, which greatly improve the time efficiency. To our knowledge, this is the first work that completely identify all the unknown tags with deterministic approaches. Simulation results show the superior performance of the proposed protocols: Compared with a baseline method which collects IDs of all the tags in the system, our best protocol reduces the execution time by 63% in average and by 85% at most.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose 3DLoc, which performs 3-dimensional localization on the tagged objects by using the RFID tag arrays. 3DLoc deploys three arrays of RFID tags on three mutually orthogonal surfaces of each object. When performing 3D localization, 3DLoc continuously moves the RFID antenna and scans the tagged objects in a 2-dimensional space right in front of the tagged objects. It then estimates the object's 3D position according to the phases from the tag arrays. By referring to the fixed layout of the tag array, we use Angle of Arrival-based schemes to accurately estimate the tagged objects' orientation and 3D coordinates in the 3D space. To suppress the localization errors caused by the multipath effect, we use the linear relationship of the AoA parameters to remove the unexpected outliers from the estimated results. We have implemented a prototype system and evaluated the actual performance in the real complex environment. The experimental results show that 3DLoc achieves the mean accuracy of 10cm in free space and 15.3cm in the multipath environment for the tagged object.
Robust RFID-Based Multi-Object Identification and Tracking with Visual Aids.

Abstract:Obtaining fine-grained spatial information is of practical importance in RFID-based applications. However, high-precision positioning remains a challenging task in commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) RFID systems. Inspired by progress in the computer vision (CV) field, researchers propose to combine CV with RFID systems and turn the positioning problem into a matching problem. Promising though it seems, current methods fuse CV and RFID through converting traces of tagged objects extracted from videos by CV into phase sequences for matching, which is a dimension-reduced procedure causing loss of spatial resolution. Consequently, they fail in more harsh conditions such as small tag intervals and low reading rates of tags. To address the limitation, we propose TagFocus, a more robust RFID-enabled system for fine-grained multi-object identification and tracking with visual aids. The key observation of TagFocus is that traces generated by different methods shall be compatible if they are acquired from one identical object. Leveraging this observation, an attention-based sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) model is trained to generate a simulated trace for each candidate tag-object pair. And the trace of the right pair shall best match the observed trace directly extracted by CV. A prototype of TagFocus is implemented and extensively assessed in lab environments. Experimental results show that our system maintains a matching accuracy of over 89% in harsh conditions, outperforming state-of-the-art schemes by 25%.
Search for a needle in a haystack: An RFID-based approach for efficiently locating objects

Abstract:In real life, looking for a misplaced object like a key in the room can be usually like searching for a needle in a haystack. In this paper, we propose a novel solution to accurately locate the specified objects attached with RFID tags in indoor environments, by efficiently leveraging the RFID technology. By making a number of novel observations regarding the tag reading performance, we obtain several regularities to depict how various parameters including the reader's power and the antenna's scanning angle affect the reading performance. Based on the regularities, we have designed very efficient algorithms to maximize the accuracy and the time-efficiency for localization. Without the help of any anchor nodes, our solution can rapidly navigate to the target object from a specific initial position. We have implemented a system prototype to evaluate the actual performance in realistic applications. The realistic experiment results show that our solution can restrict the average localization error within 49 cm and reduce the total navigation time by 33% compared to the baseline solutions.

Abstract:Many object localization applications need the relative locations of a set of objects as oppose to their absolute locations. Although many schemes for object localization using radio frequency identification (RFID) tags have been proposed, they mostly focus on absolute object localization and are not suitable for relative object localization because of large error margins and the special hardware that they require. In this paper, we propose an approach called spatial-temporal phase profiling (STPP) to RFID-based relative object localization. The basic idea of STPP is that by moving a reader over a set of tags during which the reader continuously interrogating the tags, for each tag, the reader obtains a sequence of RF phase values, which we call a phase profile, from the tag's responses over time. By analyzing the spatial-temporal dynamics in the phase profiles, STPP can calculate the spatial ordering among the tags. In comparison with prior absolute object localization schemes, STPP requires neither dedicated infrastructure nor special hardware. We implemented STPP and evaluated its performance in two real-world applications: locating misplaced books in a library and determining the baggage order in an airport. The experimental results show that STPP achieves about 84% ordering accuracy for misplaced books and 95% ordering accuracy for baggage handling. We further leverage the controllable reader antenna and upgrade STPP to infer the spacing between each pair of tags. The result shows that STPP could achieve promising performance on distance ranging.

Abstract:Radio-frequency identification (RFID) with a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) is a low-cost and low-complexity approach for item-level indoor localization. Although RSSI-based algorithms suffer from multipath effect and other environmental factors, reference tags and RSSI changes can be utilized to further improve the localization accuracy. However, the current algorithms lack deep analysis of the influence of tag interaction on localization accuracy and faces the challenge of simultaneously locating multiple close targets. In this paper, we propose an analysis method about how tag interaction affects a tag antenna radiation pattern and an RSSI change. The tag interaction analysis guides us to improve the design of RSSI-based localization algorithms. We take the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) algorithm and the Simplex algorithm as two examples. The experimental results show that the revised k-NN and the revised Simplex algorithms are robust to different numbers, spacing, and materials of target objects, and they are superior to other RFID localization schemes, considering cost, capability of simultaneous localization of multiple targets, and location estimation errors.

Abstract:ABSTRACTLocating objects labeled with RFID tags is an important issue which should be addressed in many applications, such as warehouse management, goods management in supermarket and finding of lost objects. Some existing works use large numbers of reference tags which involve lots of manpower to deploy them. Others achieve high accuracy, but rely on sophisticated equipments which are hardly available in large scale to the industry. This work exploits the radiation pattern of existing directional panel antenna which is steerable and derives angle-of-arrival (AoA) information from the energy reflected by the target tag when the antenna is rotating. We use Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) equipments and get median position accuracy of 29cm in our preliminary experiment.
