Abstract:Titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) layers are widely used in perovskite electron transport. Owing to its excellent electron transport capability, solar cell devices containing a TiO 2 layer achieve high conversion efficiency. However, the realization of highly-efficient devices on unmodified flat TiO 2 is still a tricky problem. Therefore, this work changed the method of preparing TiO 2 in an aqueous solution and prepared a type of TiO 2 film with high Cl content on the surface and a low interface defect in contact with perovskite. It was found that this novel method achieved the highest conversion efficiency of 24.31%. This work provides a new idea for the preparation of a low-defect TiO 2 electron transport layer.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate an effective low-temperature approach to fabricate a uniform and pinhole-free compact TiO2 layer for enhancing photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells. TiCl4 was used to modify TiO2 for efficient charge generation and significantly reduced recombination loss. We found that a TiO2 layer with an appropriate TiCl4 treatment possesses a smooth surface with full coverage of the conductive electrode. Further studies on charge carrier dynamics confirmed that the TiCl4 treatment improves the contact of the TiO2/perovskite interface, facilitating charge extraction and suppressing charge recombination. On the basis of the treatment, we improved the open circuit voltage from 1.01 V of the reference cell to 1.08 V, and achieved a power conversion efficiency of 16.4%.

Abstract:Organolead trihalide perovskite materials have been successfully used as light absorbers in efficient photovoltaic (PV) cells. Cell structures based on mesoscopic metal oxides and planar heterojunctions have already demonstrated very impressive and brisk advances, holding great potential to grow into a mature PV technology. High power conversion efficiency (PCE) values have been obtained from the mesoscopic configuration in which a few hundred nano-meter thick mesoporous scaffold (e.g. TiO2 or Al2O3) infiltrated by perovskite absorber was sandwiched between the electron and hole transport layers. A uniform and compact hole-blocking layer is necessary for high efficient perovskite-based thin film solar cells. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of TiO2 compact layer using various methods and its effects on the PV performance of perovskite solar cells. TiO2 compact layer was prepared by a sol-gel method based on titanium isopropoxide and HCl, spin-coating of titanium diisopropoxide bis (acetylacetonate), screen-printing of Dyesol's bocking layer titania paste, and a chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique via hydrolysis of TiCl4, respectively. The morphological and micro-structural properties of the formed compact TiO2 layers were characterized by scanning electronic microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The analyses of devices performance characteristics showed that surface morphologies of TiO2 compact films played a critical role in affecting the efficiencies. The nanocrystalline TiO2 film deposited via the CBD route acts as the most efficient hole-blocking layer and achieves the best performance in perovskite solar cells. The CBD-based TiO2 compact and dense layer offers a small series resistance and a large recombination resistance inside the device, and makes it possible to achieve a high power conversion efficiency of 12.80%. Improving the Electron Transport Performance of TiO2 Film by Regulating TiCl4 Post‐Treatment for High‐Efficiency Carbon‐Based Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:A mild continuous pH control strategy is applied to regulate the hydrolysis of TiCl4 post‐treatment on TiO2 film by urea. A uniform anatase‐dominated TiO2 layer is formed on the mesoporous TiO2, resulting in reduced defect density and superior band energy level. The efficiency of carbon‐based perovskite solar cells is improved from 16.63% to 18.08%. Titanium oxide (TiO2) has been widely used as an electron transport layer (ETL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Typically, TiCl4 post‐treatment is indispensable for modifying the surfaces of TiO2 ETL to improve the electron transport performance. However, it is challenging to produce the preferred anatase phase‐dominated TiO2 by the TiCl4 post‐treatment due to the higher thermodynamic stability of the rutile phase. In this work, a mild continuous pH control strategy for effectively regulating the hydrolysis process of TiCl4 post‐treatment is proposed. As the weak organic base, urea has been demonstrated can maintain a moderate pH decrease during the hydrolysis process of TiCl4 while keeping the hydrolysis process relatively mild due to the ultra‐weak alkalinity. The improved pH environment is beneficial for the formation of anatase TiO2. Consequently, a uniform anatase‐dominated TiO2 surface layer is formed on the mesoporous TiO2, resulting in reduced defect density and superior band energy level. The interfacial charge recombination is effectively suppressed, and the charge extraction efficiency is improved simultaneously in the fabricated solar cells. The efficiency of the fabricated carbon electrode‐based PSCs (C‐PSCs) is improved from 16.63% to 18.08%, which is the highest for C‐PSCs based on wide‐bandgap perovskites.

Abstract:In article no. 1800167, Xinhua Li, Jianming Dai, Zhengguo Xiao, and co-workers use an ultra-thin Ti as a cathode interlayer, without using any organic or inorganic electron transport layers, to improve the efficiency of perovskite solar cells. Ti forms a bonding layer with nitrogen atoms in metylammonium anions at the perovskite/Ti interface, which passivates surface defects and suppresses surface decomposition of the perovskite film. A power conversion efficiency of 18.1% is achieved. Furthermore, Ti has low diffusivity and prevents the diffusion of the cathode metal atoms into the perovskite layer, resulting in improved device stability.

Abstract:Electron and hole transport layers play a critical role in high performance metal halide perovskite solar cells. Many organic and inorganic electron/hole transport layers are developed and studied in the last few years. In this work, the authors innovatively use a ultra‐thin layer of titanium (Ti) as a cathode interlayer between metal electrode and perovskite film, without using any organic or inorganic electron transport layers, in planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and soft X‐ray absorption near edge structure results prove that Ti film forms a bonding layer with nitrogen (N) atoms in metylammonium anions at perovskite/Ti interface, which passivates surface defects and suppresses surface decomposition of perovskite film. The champian solar cell based on methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) shows a short circuit current density of 22.5 mA cm−2, a open circuit voltage of 1.03 V and a fill factor of 78.2%, yielding a power conversion efficiency of 18.1%. Notably, Ti has low diffusivity and serves as a compact blocking layer that prevents the diffusion of metal atoms into the perovskite layer, resulting in improved device stability. Our work shows that Ti is a promising low‐cost material to replace organic and inorganic electron transporting layers for efficient perovskite solar cells.

Elucidating the Roles of TiCl4 and PCBM Fullerene Treatment on TiO2 Electron Transporting Layer for Highly Efficient Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:With the fast development of the perovskite solar cell, its energy conversion efficiency has improved rapidly. In this paper, a CH3NH3PbI3-xClx organic-inorganic perovskite solar cell (PSC) was successfully prepared by the one-step solvent engineering method, and the planar heterojunction perovskite solar cell was optimized by interface engineering of the cathode interlayers. It was found that TiCl4 treatment could effectively reduce the TiO2 surface roughness, decrease the surface defects, improve the perovskite thin film crystallinity, and reduce the charge carrier recombination; hence, the short-circuit current density of PSCs and charge extraction and collection efficiencies were enhanced. Furthermore, PC60BM fullerene treatment could optimize the contact condition and reduce the interfacial potential loss. The device hysteresis effects after PCBM treatment were also reduced. The combination of TiCl4 and PC60BM treatments could largely improve the PSC device performance with a power conversion efficiency of 16.4% due to the synergetic effect.

Abstract:Planar lead halide perovskite solar cells have shown a promising application in the field of printable solar cells. However, high-performance planar perovskite solar cells typically need a high-temperature process to achieve crystallized titanium oxide films as the electron transport layers, which hinders their application in flexible plastic substrates. Here, we demonstrate a bilayered TiO2-SnO2 film as an excellent substitute for electron transport layer using a low temperature liquid phase method. The bilayered TiO2-SnO2 film exhibits efficient electron extraction and hole blocking ability even at a low processing temperature of 150 degrees C. The as-obtained solar cells exhibit a champion power conversion efficiency of 18.85% (V-oc = 1.100 V, J(sc) = 22.52 mA cm(-2) and FF = 0.761) under one sun illumination, which is much higher than the devices based on individual SnO2 or TiO2 electron transport layers. The higher electron extraction driving force at the SnO2/perovskite interface and the stronger hole blocking ability due to the defect-free physical contact at the TiO2/FTO interface are suggested to be the main reasons for the improved device performance.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have gained increasing interest in recent times owing to the rapidly enlarged device efficiency and tunable optoelectronic properties in various applications. In perovskite solar cells, interface engineering plays an important role in determining the final device efficiency and stability. In this study, we adopted TiCl4 treatment to reduce the surface roughness of the metal oxide layer and improve the perovskite film quality to obtain better device performance. After proper TiCl4 treatment, the efficiencies of TiCl4–TiO2- and TiCl4–ZnO-based devices were significantly enhanced up to 16.5% and 17.0%, respectively, compared with those based on pristine TiO2 and ZnO (13.2% and 10.2%, respectively).
Atomic Layer Deposition of TiO2 for a High-Efficiency Hole-Blocking Layer in Hole-Conductor-Free Perovskite Solar Cells Processed in Ambient Air

Abstract:In this study we design and construct high-efficiency, low-cost, highly stable, hole-conductor-free, solid-state perovskite solar cells, with TiO2 as the electron transport layer (ETL) and carbon as the hole collection layer, in ambient air. First, uniform, pinhole-free TiO2 films of various thicknesses were deposited on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrodes by atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology. Based on these TiO2 films, a series of hole-conductor-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with carbon as the counter electrode were fabricated in ambient air, and the effect of thickness of TiO2 compact film on the device performance was investigated in detail. It was found that the performance of PSCs depends on the thickness of the compact layer due to the difference in surface roughness, transmittance, charge transport resistance, electron-hole recombination rate, and the charge lifetime. The best-performance devices based on optimized TiO2 compact film (by 2000 cycles ALD) can achieve power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of as high as 7.82%. Furthermore, they can maintain over 96% of their initial PCE after 651 h (about 1 month) storage in ambient air, thus exhibiting excellent long-term stability.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is seriously affected by the conductivity and energy alignment of the electron transport layer (ETL). However, poor film quality leads to low conductivity and interface energy level mismatch, which limits the performance of PSCs. Herein, a simple room-temperature (<35 °C) method is used to produce high-quality amorphous TiO 2 thin films by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light (172 nm), to form composite ETLs with SnO 2 for PSCs. The introduction of TiO 2 produced perovskite films with larger grains and low trap density. The experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) analysis show that the composite ETL structure improves the electron mobility and conductivity, and the interaction with SnO 2 accelerates the electron extraction due to favorable energy level alignment with the perovskite layer. Eventually, the composite ETL-based PSCs obtain a champion PCE of 24.59% (certified efficiency of 24.24%) and retain 92.4% of their initial PCE after 500 h of continuous light exposure.

Abstract:The electron transport layers (ETLs) play a pivotal role in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which affect the extraction and transfer of the photo-generated-electrons. To explore a superior ETL material, which can not only improve electron transporting but also reduce interface defects, is extremely important for the development of the PSCs. Herein, a hybrid ETL with amorphous titanium nitride and titanium oxides (a-TiNx/TiO2, abbreviated as TiON) is developed to polish the microstructure of the ETL/perovskite interface. The TiON layer can adjust the bandgap alignment to produce favorable cascade energy levels with perovskite layer and facilitate the carrier transfer at ETL/perovskite interface. Meanwhile, the N atoms in TiON ETL surface can bifacially passivate the buried interface of the perovskite layer and the surface of the TiO2, decreasing uncoordinated Pb2+ and Ti4+ defects and reducing non-radiative recombination. Consequently, the TiON-based MAPbI3 solar cells attain the PCE as high as 21.06 % with an open-circuit voltage of 1.18 V. This research demonstrates that TiON and relative metal nitrides can be promising electron transport materials, which provide a reference to develop more high quality ETLs for photovoltaic application.

Abstract:Organometal halide perovskite as a promising absorber in solar cells has caught tremendous attention in the past few years. Herein, a hydrophobic PCBM layer was introduced into planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells to form the TiO2/PCBM double blocking layer. The bilayer structure assures the formation of a dense, smooth, and pinhole-free blocking layer. And the PCBM layer can also be in favor of larger grain size perovskite film and further passivate the TiO2 blocking layer. Scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results suggest the formation of a uniform and compact CH3NH3PbI3-xClx perovskite layer on the PCBM-modified TiO2 blocking layer. The solar cell has reached a PCE up to 16.37%, which is greatly larger than the control device with a PCE of 10.81%.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells with TiO 2 electron transport layers exhibit power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 22.7% in single cells. However, the preparation process of the TiO 2 layer is adopted by an unscalable method or requires high-temperature sintering, which precludes its potential use for mass production of flexible devices. In this study, a scalable low-temperature soft-cover-assisted hydrolysis (SAH) method is presented, where the precursor solution is sandwiched between a soft cover and preheated substrate to form a closed hydrolysis environment. Compact homogeneous TiO 2 films with a needle-like structure were obtained after the hydrolysis of a TiCl 4 aqueous solution. Moreover, by careful optimization of the TiO 2 fabrication conditions, a high PCE of 14.01% could be achieved for a solar module (4 × 4 cm 2 ) prepared using the SAH method. This method provides a novel approach for the efficient scale-up of the low-temperature TiO 2 film growth for industrial applications.

Abstract:The existence of a compact electron blocking layer is critical in organometal halide perovskite solar cell, since it prevented the charge recombination originated in fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode and the hole conducting layer and ensured an effective charge abstract. A compact TiO2 thin film was fabricated on FTO by spin coating different sols. Commercial peroxo titanic acid (PTA) aqueous sol and titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) sol prepared according to literature were used to regulate the performance of the compact layer. With the optimized blocking layer a PCE of 5.15% was archived with P3HT as hole-transport material (HTM) and magnetron sputtering Ag as counter electrode.

Abstract:The suitable energy level alignment between the electron transport layer (ETL) and perovskite absorber for facilitating electron extraction and transfer is essential for planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to achieve high power conversion efficiency (PCE). The planar heterojunction CsPbBr3 PSCs have attracted increasing attention due to their high stability in ambient in which TiO2 is often used as the ETL. Actually, there is a large energy barrier between the conduction bands of TiO2 and CsPbBr3, which limits the open-circuit voltage (VOC) and PCE of PSCs. Herein, we effectively optimized the energy level alignment between CsPbBr3 and TiO2 by tuning the Mg incorporation level in the latter. The Fermi level of TiO2 ETL was gradually shifted upward using Mg incorporation, which led to a favorable band bending between TiO2 and CsPbBr3 and reduced the interfacial band offset. Consequently, the VOC of the devices was effectively increased from 1.36 to 1.49 V, and the corresponding PCE was also increased from 6.87% to 8.76%. This work highlights the importance of the energy level alignment between ETLs and perovskite absorbers for high-performance devices and offers an effective means to address the large energy barrier between the conduction bands of TiO2 and CsPbBr3.
Rational Design of Solution-Processed Ti-Fe-O Ternary Oxides for Efficient Planar CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite Solar Cells with Suppressed Hysteresis

Abstract:Electron-extraction layer (EEL) plays a critical role in determining the charge extraction and the power conversion efficiencies of the organometal-halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, Ti-Fe-O ternary oxides were first developed to work as an efficient EEL in planar PSC. Compared with the widely used TiOx and the pure FeOx, the ternary composites show superior properties in multiple aspects including the excellent stability of the precursor solution, good coverage on the substrates, outstanding electrical properties, and suitable energy levels. By varying the Fe content from 0 to 100% in the Ti-Fe-O composites, the conductivity of the resultant compact layer was markedly improved, confirmed by consistent results from the conductive atomic force microscopy and the linear sweep voltammetry measurements. Meanwhile, the compositional engineering tunes the energy level alignment of the Ti-Fe-O EEL/CH3NH3PbI3 interface to a region that is favorable for obtaining excellent charge-extraction property. The combinational advantages of the Ti-Fe-O composites significantly improved the photovoltaic performance of the as-prepared solar cells. An increase of over 20% in the short-circuit current (JSC) density has been achieved due to a modified EEL conductivity and energy alignment with the perovskite layer. The reduction in the surface recombination and enhancement of the charge collection efficiency also result in about 15% increase in the fill factor. Notably, the device also showed remarkably alleviated hysteresis behavior, revealing a prominently inhibited surface recombination.
