Abstract:With increased freight transportation capacity, the overturning risk of curved girder bridges with single-column piers under eccentric heavy-duty vehicles intensifies. Hence, it is crucial to study the overturning mechanism and characteristic state of such bridges. Firstly, a scaled test was conducted to monitor support reaction force and displacement during the overturning process of the girder under eccentric loading conditions of the fleet and single-vehicle, respectively. Secondly, the refined finite element model (FEM) was developed and validated with the test results. Finally, FEMs of three types of curved girders with single-column piers were established, and the overturning characteristics of bridges with different curvatures were analyzed comparatively. The results showed that the most unfavorable loading position along the longitudinal bridge direction was determined according to the overturning axis. The rotation angle of the girder exceeding 0.045 rad represented the critical condition for structural dispersion. The equilibrium state of the curved girder under various bearing failure conditions can be simulated by modifying its boundary constraints and solving the finite element general equation with them. The ascending order of anti-overturning capabilities among three types of curved bridges was sequential as follows: Type I curved bridges, slightly curved bridges, and Type II curved bridges. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the deformation extent and anti-overturning capabilities of curved girder bridges. The response characteristics of the experimental and numerical analyses were revealed, which can guide the antioverturning design, assessment, and reinforcement of such bridges.
