Abstract:The Cu-Pb-As ternary system is a fundamental subsystem in metallurgy, and the oxidation behavior of its components elements is an important issue in alloy preparation, particularly with copper/lead systems. To improve arsenic removal in the copper fire-refining process, a Cu-based alloy with high Pb and As content was prepared based on increasing the amounts of lead and arsenic impurities in the blister/secondary copper, and the distribution behavior of As during the alloy oxidation process was investigated. The experiments were undertaken at 960–1080°C and oxygen partial pressures of 10−8–10−5 atm. The phase equilibration-quenching-EPMA technique was applied to study the phase compositions and concentrations as well as the oxidation behavior of the alloy components. The results show that arsenic in the Pb-bearing liquid alloy was readily oxidized, and the liquid alloy gradually converted into solid copper and oxides. Arsenic and lead were enriched in the quenched samples’ oxides, with the distribution coefficient of As able to exceed 30. The distribution coefficient of As tended to rise when the experimental temperature was increased, yet the oxygen partial pressure had little influence on it. The oxidation degree of arsenic in the oxides was found to be predominantly trivalent, like Pb3(AsO3)2 or Pb2As2O5.
