Abstract:In this article, five kinds of 1,3-diketones and their chelates with different molecular structures were prepared, and their tribological properties were tested. The experimental results show that the running-in time and friction coefficient of the friction pairs lubricated by 1,3-diketones containing a benzene ring increased with the increase of the carbon chain length. In addition, only the friction pair lubricated by 1-(4-ethylphenyl)-butane-1,3-dione (0201) and 1-(4-ethylphenyl)-nonane-1,3-dione (0206) could achieve stable superlubricity. When the benzene ring was replaced with a carbon six-membered ring, it was found that although the friction pair lubricated by this lubricant could achieve superlubricity, the wear of the friction pair was severe, and obvious abrasive wear occurred. In addition, the lubricants prepared by mixing 1,3-diketones and the corresponding chelates in a ratio of 4:6 had greatly improved lubricating properties compared to 1,3-diketones. Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the surface of the friction pair after the test and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses of 1,3-diketones before and after the experiment, we found that the necessary conditions for the friction pair lubricated by 1,3-diketone to achieve superlubricity were formation of tribochemical adsorption films and the presence of chelates in solution.

Abstract:In this article, the Claisen condensation method was used to synthesize 1-(4-ethylphenyl)-nonane-1,3-dione. The tribological properties of diketone, chelate and PAO6 were investigated. Among them, when the ratio of diketone to chelate in the mixed solution was 4:6, the optimal macroscale superlubricity can be obtained, the friction coefficient, wear scar diameter and contact pressure were 0.006, 210 mu m and 105.2 MPa, respectively. Surface analysis showed that diketone can be adsorbed on the surface of the metal friction pair through tribochemical reactions. Characterization of the cross-section of the friction pair confirmed that a 2.7 nm thick film was indeed formed on the surface. The excellent lubrication performance of the mixed solution was due to the synergistic effect between diketone and chelate.

Abstract:1-(4-ethylphenyl)-nonane-1,3-dione (0206) is an oil-soluble liquid molecule with rod-like structure. In this study, the chelate (0206-Fe) with octahedral structure was prepared by the reaction of ferric chloride and 1,3-diketone. The experimental results show that when using 0206 and a mixed solution containing 60% 0206-Fe and 40% 0206 (0206-Fe(60%)) as lubricants of the steel friction pairs, superlubricity can be achieved (0.007, 0.006). But their wear scar diameters (WSD) were very large (532 μm, 370 μm), which resulted in the pressure of only 44.3 and 61.8 MPa in the contact areas of the friction pairs. When 0206-Fe(60%) was mixed with PAO6, it was found that the friction coefficient (COF) decreased with increase of 0206-Fe(60%) in the solution. When the ratio of 0206-Fe(60%) to PAO6 was 8:2 (PAO6(20%)), it exhibited better comprehensive tribological properties (232.3 MPa). Subsequent studies have shown that reducing the viscosity of the base oil in the mixed solution helped to reduce COF and increased WSD. Considering the COF, contact pressure, and running-in time, it was found that the mixed lubricant (Oil3(20%)) prepared by the base oil with a viscosity of 19.7 mPa·s (Oil3) and 0206-Fe(60%) exhibited the best tribological properties (0.007, 161.4 MPa, 3,100 s).

Abstract:This paper highlights the lubricating and film-forming behaviors of diketone and surface characteristics of tribopairs after the friction test. An ultralow friction coefficient of 0.007 is accomplished on steel surfaces with diketone. The existence of tribochemical adsorption films inside the wear track is directly measured and observed. Moreover, a well-developed conformal contact surface morphology is generated between two friction pairs, which can be helpful to the realization of ultralow friction on rough surfaces. In addition, the film thickness of diketone was detected using by relative optical interference intensity (ROII) under different rolling speeds. Present work reveals that diketone lubricant has a good lubricating performance on steel surfaces, and can be extended to applications with small loads.

Abstract:Series of triazine derivatives, 2,4-bi-alkoxy-6-(O,O’-dialkyldithiophosphate)-s-1,3,5-triazine, were synthe-sized. Their tribological properties as lubricating oil additives in vegetable oil were evaluated using a four-ball tester. The results show that these triazine derivatives possess extreme pressure capacity, and they can improve antiwear and friction-reducing performance of base stock. The elements chemical states of the worn surface were estimated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show that a protective film containing sulphide, phosphate and some organic nitrogen compounds was formed on the worn surface during the lubrication process, and the film possesses extreme pressure and antiwear properties.

Abstract:For many precision devices with limited amount of lubricants, the retention of lubricating oil between solid surfaces is of great significance for the lubrication reliability in the long-term operation. In this study, the spreading behavior of a synthetic 1,3-diketone lubricant (1-(4-ethyl phenyl) nonane-1,3-dione) 02/06 on steel surfaces was investigated. By measuring the surface tension of oil and the surface energy of steel, the spreading parameter of 02/06 was determined, which was much smaller than the reference oils with similar viscosity. Rotary friction test shows that 02/06 was positioned at the contact region in the presence of a strong centrifugal force and performed a stable ultralow friction. Moreover, the addition of 02/06 into the reference oils also improved the lubricant retention.

Abstract:Superlubricity, especially achieved using oil-based materials, is of great significance for the reliability of mechanical systems. In this study, the superlubricity (mu approximate to 0.006) of steel surfaces using a synthetic 1,3-diketone lubricant EPBD-02/01 was investigated. The friction test shows that the superlubricity of EPBD-02/01 was induced by a tribochemical running-in process, through which the contact pressure was dramatically reduced. By comparing with a surface generated by the mechanical polishing, it was found that the surface-chemisorption of diketone plays an important role in the lubrication. Moreover, combining with the shear-thinning behavior of EPBD-02/01, it was supposed that the superlubricity of 1,3-diketone is based on autonomous viscosity control over a wide range of velocities in the thin film lubrication regime.

Abstract:Purpose - To study some tribochemical properties of tetrazole derivatives, n-hexadecanyl (1H-tetrazol-1-yl) acetate (HTA) and 1-phenyl-5-(octylthio)tetrazole (PCT) as lubricating oil additives in hydrogenised oil, and estimate the action mechanism.Design/methodology/approach - The two tetrazole compounds were synthesized, and added them in hydrogenised oil with different concentrations. Their anti-wear properties were evaluated with a four-ball machine, the wear scar was analyzed with a X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).Findings - The novel compounds possess good anti-wear, friction reduction properties and good load-carrying capacity. According to the XPS results, the novel compounds were migrated onto the surface of the steel balls and adsorbed on the surface. The two additive compounds, themselves, and their decomposers contributed to the corresponding tribological performances. With S element contained in the compound PCT, the influence on the load-carrying capacity of the base oil was enhanced. It may be due to the formation of S2- and SO42- compounds on the worn surface which could form a protective film.Research limitations/implications - Their antioxidant, anticorrosion, anti-wear properties are not estimated.Practical implications - Two useful EP and AW lubricating oil additives were synthesized, and maybe it is the potential industrial applied lubricating oil additives.Originality/value - This paper provided a study way of some N-containing heterocyclic compounds as lubricating oil additives.
Effect of Nickel Acetyl Acetonate as Lubricant Additive in Base Oils with Different Molecular Structure on In-Situ Formation and Tribomechanism of Carbon-Based Tribofilms of Steel-Steel Sliding Pair

Abstract:Nickel acetyl acetonate (Ni(acac) 2 ), a metal-organic compound, was directly dispersed in base oils alkylated naphthalene (AN-5), diisooctyl sebacate (DIOS), poly-α-olefin (PAO6), and mineral oil (liquid hydrocarbon mixtures:150 N) in the presence of commercial dispersant RF1151 (monoallyl poly(isobutylene succinimide). The tribological properties of the lubricants were tested with a four-ball friction and wear tester. The friction-induced in-situ formation of carbon films on rubbed steel surfaces under the catalysis of Ni(acac) 2 was investigated, and the as-formed carbon films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that Ni(acac) 2 added in the base oils can decompose to form metallic nickel to form nickel layer on the rubbed metal sub-surfaces and catalyze the degradation of the base oil molecules adsorbed to form carbon-based tribofilms. The carbon film formed from AN-5 with aromatic ring structure has a high degree of graphitization and the best friction-reducing and antiwear abilities, and those formed from PAO6 and 150 N with linear structure have a low degree of graphitization as well as good tribological properties. Under the lubrication of DIOS with Ni(acac) 2 , however, there is no carbon film formation while the tribological properties of the lubricant are relatively poor, due to the absence of the catalytic metallic nickel and nickel oxide layer on the rubbed metal sub-surface. Thanks to the catalytic effect of metallic nickel released from Ni(acac) 2 for the degradation of various base oils with different molecular structure, the present approach could provide a rational pathway to tune the in-situ formation of carbon-based tribofilm on rubbed steel surfaces so as to effectively reduce the friction and wear of steel-steel sliding pair.

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the lubrication performance of a nano-TiO 2 oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion during the hot rolling process. A series of O/W emulsions with varying concentrations of TiO 2 nanoparticles (0.05, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt.%) were synthesized. Tribological tests were conducted under a load of 70 N for 10 minutes to determine the optimal concentration based on anti-frictional properties. The O/W nano-emulsion optimized with a 0.1 wt.% concentration of TiO 2 applied in the hot rolling process of IS 2062 E250 grade steel. This application resulted in a reduction of rolling force (RF) and surface roughness, suggesting its potential as an alternative lubricant. The results indicated superior antifriction performance at a TiO 2 concentration of 0.1 wt.%, leading to a 15% reduction in RF. Additionally, the use of the nano-emulsion contributed to a significant reduction in oxide scale formation. Surface roughness measurements of the rolled samples revealed a 19% decrease, with a roughness value of 2.125 μm, compared to samples rolled with a nano-free O/W emulsion. These findings suggest that nano-TiO 2 O/W emulsions could serve as an effective alternative to conventional O/W emulsions in future industrial metalworking applications.

Abstract:A novel ashless and non-phosphorus oil-soluble compound, 2,4,6-trioctylthio-1,3,5-triazine(OTT) was synthesized with the reaction of cyanuric chloride and sodium octyl mercaptan in tetrahydrofuran at reflux temperature for 8h. The tribological properties of OTT and octylthiol(OT) as additives in a liquid paraffin were evaluated and compared using both a four-ball wear tester and a four-ball EP wear test machine. The results show that OTT behaves extremely better than OT as anti-wear and friction-reducing additive, while OT exhibits more excellent extreme pressure property. The element composition and chemical state of the films generated on steel counterface were investigated with a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that tribological reaction occurred during the rubbing process and a protective film containing FeS, FeSO4 and some organic nitrogen compounds was formed on the worn surface.

Abstract:The load-carrying capacity, wear and friction properties of 2-octoxyl methylthio-benzothiazole (DEOY) and 2-dodecylthio methylthio-benzothiazole (DEMB) added to a synthetic lubricant (diester) were evaluated using a four-ball test machine. The results indicate that the two compounds added to the diester possess good load-carrying capacities and excellent anti-wear and friction reduction properties. The thermal stability of the two compounds under nitrogen atmosphere was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that the compounds DEOY and DEMB possess excellent thermal stability. The surface topography of the rubbed surface was investigated with scanning electron microscopy, the elemental chemical nature of the anti-wear films generated on steel counterface were investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Their tribological performances as lubricating oil additives in rapeseed oil were evaluated using a four-ball machine, and their chemistry of films was analyzed with X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES). The results indicate that the two compounds possess excellent anti-wear property and good load-carrying capacity. According to the XANES results, for the thermal films, the outer surfaces are mainly composed of N, S-containing polymer and ferric sulfate, and the near-surface and the bulk are composed of ferrous sulfate, while for the anti-wear films, the outer surfaces are only composed of ferric sulfate, but the near-surface and the bulk are mainly composed of ferrous sulfate.
A Study on the Tribological Performance of an Organic Cadmium Compound as a Lubricant Additive

Abstract:An oil-soluble cadmium dipropyldithiophosphate additive was synthesized. A four-ball wear tester was used to evaluate the tribological performance of the additive in a mineral oil and lubricant grease under different loads and compared with some commercial additives. The results show that it exhibits excellent antiwear and load-carrying capacities, better than commercial additives. In comparison Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) were used to investigate the topography, and chemical composition of the rubbing surface. Smooth and light topography of the wear scar confirms that the additive showed good antiwear characteristics. Energy dispersive X-ray and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer analyses reveled that tribochemical mixed protective films consists of atomic cadmium, sulphides, sulphates and phosphates were formed on the rubbing surface, which contribute to improve the tribological properties of lubricant and grease. Particularly, the soft cadmium film formed plays an important role in improving antiwear properties of oils. Finally, tribological performance and antiwear mechanism of the additive were discussed, and formation scheme for atomic cadmium was proposed. Copyright © 2004 SAE International.

Abstract:Three novel S-P-N type triazine derivatives were synthesised, and their structures were analysed through elemental analysis, and their tribological behaviours as additives in rapeseed oil were evaluated using a four-ball tester. The extreme pressure and anti wear (AW) mechanism was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the additives possess excellent load-carrying capacity and AW ability but have some friction-reducing property only under the low load condition. Based on the results of XPS and SEM analysis, it can be seen that tribochemical reaction occurred between the synthesised compounds and metal surfaces during the sliding process, to form a complex film which has excellent load-carrying capacity and AW ability. Tribological roles of MoS2 and PTFE nano oils at the rolling/sliding point contacts: Conventional versus textured contacts

Nanolubricants and surface textures have evidenced the ability to improve the tribo-performances of concentrated contacts. Motivated by this finding as reported in the literature, in the present work, the synergistic uses of laser-created surface textures and nanolubricants have been employed to explore and improve the tribological behaviours of moderately loaded (PH = 0.5 and 0.8 GPa) point contacts operating mainly in mixed and elastohydrodynamic lubrication regimes. MoS2 and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanoparticles based on two nanolubricants were prepared in the laboratory to lubricate the rolling/sliding conventional and textured point contacts. Two sets of contacts (grounded discs versus lapped balls and grounded textured discs versus lapped balls) have been employed to create the geometric configuration of conventional and textured concentrated point contacts. Based on the experimental results found herein, the friction coefficient with the textured contacts reduced by 64% in the presence of MoS2-based nanolubricant as compared to the conventional point contact lubricated with the base oil; however, in the presence of polytetrafluoroethylene-based nanolubricant, this reduction has been recorded by 56%. The textured surface involving a small dimple size yielded better results than the relatively large size. Worn surfaces have been investigated and analysed using optical and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy micro-images. Moreover, certain surface studies using atomic force microscope have also been conducted to understand the surface topography and associated wear mechanisms.

Abstract:Two ashless and non-phosphorus hydroxyl-containing dithiocarbamate-triazine compounds, 2,4,6-tri[N,N-di-n-butyldithiocarmate-(2′-hydroxyl)-propionylthio]-1,3,5-s-triazine (LDBA) and 2,4,6-tri[N,N-di-i-octyldithiocarmate-(2′-hydroxyl)-propionylthio]-1,3,5-s-triazine (LDIOA), were prepared and their tribological behaviors as additives in rapeseed oil (RSO) were evaluated using a four-ball tester. Thermal degradation tests were conducted to identify their thermal stabilities using a thermo-gravimetric analyzer. The worn surfaces of the steel balls were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicate that the additives possess high thermal stabilities and good load-carrying capacities. Moreover, they both have good anti-wear and friction-reducing property at relatively high concentration (>1.5wt%) and under all test loads. The results of XPS analyses illustrate that the prepared compounds as additives in RSO forms a protective film containing inorganic sulfide, sulfate, oxidized compounds and organic nitrogen-containing compounds on the metal surface during the sliding process.
Tribological Behaviors of Several Polymer–polymer Sliding Combinations under Dry Friction and Oil-Lubricated Conditions

Abstract:The friction and wear properties of polyamide 66 (PA66), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sliding against themselves under dry sliding and oil-lubricated conditions were studied by using a pin-on-disc tribometer. The effect of applied load and sliding speed on tribological behaviors of the polymer–polymer sliding combinations under dry sliding and oil-lubricated conditions were also investigated. The worn surfaces were examined by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Experimental results showed that friction properties of the three sliding combinations could be greatly improved by oil lubrication, the antiwear properties of PTFE and PPS were improved by oil lubrication, while that of PA66 were decreased by oil lubrication. Frictional heat, which would alter the physical state of polymer sliding surfaces, had significant effect on the tribological behaviors of polymer–polymer sliding combinations under dry sliding condition, while oil lubrication could reduce or dissipate the frictional heat. Adhesion wear was the dominant wear mechanism for dry sliding condition, while adhesion wear combined with erosion wear was the main wear mechanism for oil-lubricated condition.

Abstract:Abstract Molybdenum dialkyldithiocarbamate (MoDTC) is widely used as a friction modifier in engine lubricating oil. Under MoDTC lubrication, the friction and wear behaviors of tungsten-doped diamond-like carbon (W-DLC) films annealed at 100–400 °C were discussed and evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Raman spectroscopy. Under (polymerized alpha olefin) PAO + MoDTC lubrication, the coefficient of friction of all samples decreased, but the wear rates of the W-DLC films annealed at 300 °C increased significantly. By interacting with zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP), the wear rates of W-DLC films annealed at different temperatures declined significantly owing to the formation of dense phosphate tribofilms on the worn surfaces.

Abstract:PurposeAs multifunctional additives, ZDDP, which provides excellent oxidation resistance and superior antiwear properties, has been used widely in lubricants, however, it shows oppositional effect with friction modifiers when used together. In this paper, an attempt is made to find a novel kind of borate ester which can be used as potential substitute for ZDDP.Design/methodology/approachA novel borate ester containing dialkylthiophosphate group was prepared and characterized. Its tribological properties as an additive in synthetic ester were evaluated using a four‐ball tribometer and antioxidative ability tested by pressurized differential scanning calorimetry (PDSC). Thermal degradation tests were conducted to identify its thermal stabilities using thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The worn surface of the steel ball was investigated by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the antiwear mechanism of the additive was preliminarily discussed.FindingsResults show the additive possesses outstanding loading‐carrying and friction‐reducing properties, compared with ZDDP, and can improve antiwear properties of the base oil dramatically. Moreover, it also has excellent antioxidation performance and thermal stability.Originality/valueThis paper provides a multifunctional ashless additive which possesses excellent tribological properties, and gives another selection for industrial applications in which ZDDP is needed.
