Abstract:A porous two-dimensional (2D) cobalt(II) metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Co(H(2)tbca)(bpb)(H2O)(2)]center dot bpb}(n) (H(4)tbca = 1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid; bpb = 1,4-bis(pyrid-4-yl)benzene), was synthesized and structurally characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the monometallic Co2+ ion acted as coordination nodes in a distorted octahedral geometry and bridged by H(2)tbca(2-) and bpb ligands, giving rise to a porous 2D sql network. Thermal analysis reveals high thermal stability of the framework material even losing its guest molecules. Magnetic studies showed that the six-coordinated Co2+ ions exhibit large easy-plane magnetic anisotropy with the zero-field splitting parameter D = 62.1 cm(-1). For the presence of significant single-ion magnetic anisotropy, single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior through combined Direct and Raman mechanisms was evidenced with the effective energy U-eff = 31.8 cm(-1). The forgoing result provides a new 2D cobalt (II) SIM-MOF and a potential bipyridyl-tetracarboxylate approach for the construction of SIM frameworks.
A Mononuclear Five-Coordinate Co(ii) Single Molecule Magnet with a Spin Crossover Between the S = 1/2 and 3/2 States.

Abstract:Although a great number of single-ion magnets (SIMs) and spin-crossover (SCO) compounds have been discovered, multifunctional materials with the combination of SCO and SIM properties are extremely scarce. Here magnetic studies have been carried out for a mononuclear, five-coordinate cobalt(ii) complex [Co(3,4-lut)4Br]Br (1) with square pyramidal geometry. Direct-current magnetic measurement confirms the spin transition between the S = 1/2 and 3/2 states in the range of 150-290 K with a small hysteresis loop. Frequency- and temperature-dependent alternating-current magnetic susceptibility reveals slow magnetization relaxation under an applied dc field of 3000 Oe. The work here presents the first instance of the five-coordinate mononuclear cobalt(ii)-based SIM exhibiting the thermally induced complete SCO.

Abstract:Single-ion magnets (SIMs) and single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are typically made up of 3d and/or 4f complexes that possess significant energy barriers to prevent the spin reversal behavior at the molecular level. SMMs/SIMs have various promising applications, including high-density information storage, molecular spintronics, and quantum computers. This article offers an overview of single-ion magnetism in lanthanide( III )-based coordination frameworks that consist of self-assemblies in one-, two-, and three-dimensions. The large magnetic moments and magnetic anisotropy of lanthanide( III ) ions make them potential candidates for SIMs/SMMs. Additionally, the coordination framework structure enables multi-functionalities such as responsiveness to external stimuli, proton conduction, high structural stability, and host–guest interactions. These multi-functionalities indicate that the lanthanide( III )-based magnetic metal coordination frameworks represent an exciting platform for the development of a new generation of SIMs/SMMs.

Abstract:A one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymer [Co(btca)(1/2)(mbpy)](n) (1, mbpy=4,4 '-Dimethyl-2,2 '-bipyridyl, H(4)btca=1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid) constructed by a mixed tetracarboxylic-dipyridyl ligand strategy with a ribbon topology was synthesized and magnetically characterized. Magnetic studies combined with theoretical calculations reveal large easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of the central Co(II) ions in a highly distorted five-coordination geometry. Interestingly, field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior was evidenced in the chain compound, making the cobalt(II) coordination ribbon to be the first five-coordinate SIM chain.

Abstract:Single-molecule magnets display magnetic bistability of molecular origin, which may one day be exploited in magnetic data storage devices. Recently it was realised that increasing the magnetic moment of polynuclear molecules does not automatically lead to a substantial increase in magnetic bistability. Attention has thus increasingly focussed on ions with large magnetic anisotropies, especially lanthanides. In spite of large effective energy barriers towards relaxation of the magnetic moment, this has so far not led to a big increase in magnetic bistability. Here we present a comprehensive study of a mononuclear, tetrahedrally coordinated cobalt(II) single-molecule magnet, which has a very high effective energy barrier and displays pronounced magnetic bistability. The combined experimental-theoretical approach enables an in-depth understanding of the origin of these favourable properties, which are shown to arise from a strong ligand field in combination with axial distortion. Our findings allow formulation of clear design principles for improved materials.

Abstract:A bicomponent ion-pair molecule compound [Co(Brphterpy)(2)][Co(NCS)(4)]center dot 2MeCN was designed and prepared for the construction of multistable functional materials. Due to the different coordination geometries of the cationic and anionic Co-II ions, this compound exhibits both thermally induced spin crossover (SCO) and field-induced single-ion magnetism (SIM). This represents a rare example of a two-component system with the coexistence of SIM and SCO behaviors and suggests a simple, yet very efficient strategy for the construction of multistable molecular materials.

Abstract:Tuning magnetic anisotropy via perturbing the coordination environment of metal ions is of great importance for developing high-performance single-ion magnets (SIMs). We herein reported the syntheses and characterization of four one-dimensional cobalt(II) coordination polymers featuring distorted tetrahedral metal center, namely {[Co(pdms)(bpy)]bpy}n (Cobpy), {[Co(pdms)(bpen)]}n (Cobpen), {[Co(pdms)(bpdoz)]H2O}n (Cobpdoz), and {[Co(pdms)(bimp)]2DMF3H2O}n (Cobimp) (bpy = 4,4 '-bipyridine, bpen = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene, bpdoz = 2,5- di(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole, bimp = 1,4-bis[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene). By the assembly of [Co(pdms)2](2+) anions and different organic bridging ligands, the chains with highly anisotropic four-coordinate Co(II) ions exhibit a significant modification of the structures, especially the tetrahedral coordination sphere. Notably, the two angle N-Co-N bite angles, which mainly determine the magnetic anisotropy of tetrahedral mononuclear cobalt complexes, were significantly changed due to the use of different organic linkers. Magnetic measurements reveal that the four complexes possess uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with the zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters D being -39.7, -32.1, -23.8, and -43.4 cm(-1) for Cobpy, Cobpen, Cobpdoz, and Cobimp, respectively. This observation and their electronic structures were further unveiled by theoretical calculations. Dynamic alternative current magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that both the chains exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under an external field, indicating field-induced slow magnetic relaxation of the coordination polymers (1D SIM-CPs). Notably, the relaxation behaviors are also modified due to the structural differences induced by distinct linkers. The foregoing results not only enrich the family of 1D SIM-CPs showing low-coordinated metal centers but also offer a coordination chain platform for tuning magnetic anisotropy of four-coordinate Co(II) ions in 1D chains.
Field-Induced Single-Ion Magnet Behaviour in Two New Cobalt(II) Coordination Polymers with 2,4,6-Tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine

Abstract:We herein reported the syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of a two-dimensional coordination polymer {[CoII(TPT)2/3(H2O)4][CH3COO]2·(H2O)4}n (1) and a chain compound {[CoII(TPT)2(CHOO)2(H2O)2]}n (2) based on the 2,4,6-Tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT) ligand. Structure analyses showed that complex 1 had a cationic hexagonal framework structure, while 2 was a neutral zig-zag chain structure with different distorted octahedral coordination environments. Magnetic measurements revealed that both complexes exhibit large easy-plane magnetic anisotropy with the zero-field splitting parameter D = 47.7 and 62.1 cm−1 for 1 and 2, respectively. This magnetic anisotropy leads to the field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviour. However, their magnetic dynamics are quite different; while complex 1 experienced a dominating thermally activated Orbach relaxation at the whole measured temperature region, 2 exhibited multiple relaxation pathways involving direct, Raman, and quantum tunneling (QTM) processes at low temperatures and Orbach relaxation at high temperatures. The present complexes enlarge the family of framework-based single-ion magnets (SIMs) and highlight the significance of the structural dimensionality to the final magnetic properties.

Abstract:Two mononuclear, seven-coordinate Co(ii) and Fe(ii) complexes [CoII(BPA-TPA)](BF4)2 (1-Co) and [FeII(BPA-TPA)](ClO4)2 (2-Fe) with a capped trigonal prismatic coordination geometry have been synthesized from the pentapyridyldiamine (BPA-TPA) ligand. 1-Co exhibits easy plane anisotropy in which slow magnetic relaxation is observed under a 1.0 kOe dc field. It is the first example of a single-ion magnet (SIM) of a 3d transition metal ion with a capped trigonal prismatic configuration. 2-Fe is not a SIM at 1.8 K.

Abstract:Three two-dimensional Co-II complexes, namely, [Co(dps)(2)Cl-2](n) (1), [Co(dps)(2)Br-2](n) (2), and [Co(dps)(2)(H2O)(2) center dot I-2 center dot(H2O)(4)](n) (3) (where dps = 4,4'-dipyridyl sulfide), have been synthesized using a rationally designed synthetic approach and characterized structurally and magnetically. Although they crystallize in different space groups, these compounds all have similar two-dimensional (4,4) layer structures where the Co2+ centers are bridged by the bis.monodentate) ligand dps. In addition, the coordination geometry of the Co2+ centers is of a general CoN4X2 octahedral environment formed by four equatorial N atoms from four dps ligands and two X atoms (X = Cl, Br, and O atoms for 1-3, respectively) in the axial positions. Ab initio calculations revealed that due to the strong spin-orbit coupling, the spin Hamiltonian containing the zero-field splitting parameters D and E cannot be used to describe their magnetic anisotropy. According to the calculation, the g(z) values for the spin-orbit ground doublets of 1-3 are larger than the g(x) and g(y) values, which indicates the easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of these compounds. Due to the existence of the magnetic anisotropy, field-induced single-ion magnet behavior can be observed in all these complexes. This work illustrated that care should be taken to interpret the magnetic data of octahedral Co-II compounds. In addition, extended frameworks with long and flexible organic spacers are good candidates for the construction of SIMs with different axial ligands and different magnetic properties.

Abstract:A cobalt(II) complex and manganese(II) coordination polymer, formulated as [Co2(H2btca)(mbpy)4][H2btca]·4H2O (1) and {Mn2(btca)(mbpy)2(H2O)2}n (2) (H4btca = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid; mbpy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl), constructed by mixed bipyridine-tetracarboxylic ligands were synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structural analyses reveal that compound 1 is a discrete neutral binuclear molecule, while compound 2 is a two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer. The metal ions in these compounds are well isolated, with an intramolecular Co2+⋯Co2+ distance of 9.170 Å for 1 and Mn2+⋯Mn2+ separation of 10.984 and 11.164 Å for 2 due to the bulk tetracarboxylic linker. This isolation gives rise to a single-ion magnetism origin of the compounds. Magnetic studies reveal a large zero-field splitting parameter D of 82.6 cm-1 for 1, while a very small D of 0.42 cm-1 was observed for 2. Interestingly, dynamic ac magnetic measurements exhibited slow magnetic relaxation under the external dc field of the two compounds, revealing the field-supported single-ion magnet (SIM) of 1 and 2. The detailed theoretical calculations were further applied to understand the electronic structures, magnetic anisotropy, and relaxation dynamics in 1 and 2. Combined with our recently reported compound (Eur. J. Inorg. Chem., 2022, e202200354), the foregoing results provide not only a rare binuclear cobalt(II) SIM and the first 2D manganese(II) SIM coordination polymer but also a bipyridine-tetracarboxylic ligand approach toward novel SIMs.
A Dicobalt(II) Single-Molecule Magnet via a Well-Designed Dual-Capping Tetrazine Radical Ligand

Abstract:The recent years have witnessed the glory development for the construction of high-performance mononuclear single molecule magnets (SMMs) within a specific coordination geometry, which, however, is not well applied in cluster-based SMMs due to the synthetic challenges. Given that the monocobalt(II) complexes within a trigonal-prismatic (TPR) coordination geometry have been classified as excellent SMMs with huge axial anisotropy (D ≈ -100 cm-1), here we designed and synthesized a new dual-capping tetrazine ligand, 3,6-bis(6-(di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (bpptz), and prepared a novel dicobalt(II) complex, [Cp2CoIII][{(hfac)CoII}2(bpptz•-)][hfac]2·2Et2O (1, hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate). In the structure of 1, the bpptz•- radical ligand enwraps two Co(II) centers within quasi-TPR geometries, which are further bridged by the tetrazine radical in the trans mode. The magnetic study revealed that the interaction between the Co centers and the tetrazine radical is strongly antiferromagnetic with a coupling constant (J) of -65.8 cm-1 (in the -2J formalism). Remarkably, 1 exhibited the typical SMM behavior with an effective energy barrier of 69 cm-1 under a 1.5 kOe dc field, among the largest for polynuclear transition metal SMMs. In addition, DFT and ab initio calculations suggested that the presence of a strong Co(II)-radical magnetic interaction effectively quenches the QTM effect and enhances the barrier height for the magnetization reversal.

Understanding the Magnetic Anisotropy Toward Single-Ion Magnets.

Abstract:Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) can retain their magnetization status preferentially after removal of the magnetic field below a certain temperature. The unique property, magnetic bistable status, enables the molecule-scale SMM to become the next-generation high-density information storage medium. SMMs' new applications are also involved in high-speed quantum computation and molecular spintronics. The development of coordination chemistry, especially in transition metal (3d) and lanthanide (4f) complexes, diversifies SMMs by introducing new ones. In both 3d and 4f SMMs, the ligands play a fundamental role in determining the SMMs' magnetic properties. The strategies for rationally designing and synthesizing high-performance SMMs require a comprehensive understanding of the effects of a crystal field. In this Account, we focus mainly on the magneto-structural correlations of 4f or 3d single-ion magnets (SIMs), within which there is only one spin carrier. These one-spin carrier complexes benefit from getting rid of exchange interactions and relatively large distances of magnetic centers in the lattice, providing the ease to construct high-performance SIMs from the crystal field perspective. We will briefly introduce the crystal field approach for 4f or 3d complexes and then the magnetic anisotropy analysis via the displaced-charge electrostatic model. This idea has been proposed for years, and the related work is also highlighted. The angular-resolved magnetometry method, predominating in determining the magnetic anisotropic axes direction, is discussed. We also give a brief introduction of the quantum chemistry ab initio method, which has shown to be powerful in understanding the magnetic anisotropy and low-lying states. In the constructing and characterizing part, we give an overview of the SIMs based on lanthanide and transition ions, reported by our group in the past 5 years. In the 4f-SIMs survey, we discuss how β-diketonates and cyclomultienes, and their combination, as ligands to influence magnetic anisotropy and provide some suggestion on designing SIMs based on different lanthanide ions. In the 3d-SIMs survey, we fully discuss the correlation between zero-field-splitting parameter D and molecular geometrical angle parameters. Finally, we lay out the challenges and further development of SIMs. We hope the understanding we provide about single-ion magnetic properties will be helpful to design high-performance SMMs.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer (CP) [Co-III(CN)(6)](2)[CoII(TODA)](3)center dot 7H(2)O (TODA = 1,4,10-trioxa-7,13-diazacyclopentadecane, Co-TODA) was reported earlier to show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, displaying single-ion magnet (SIM) behaviors. Most SIMs are molecular compounds with fewer adopting coordination polymer (CP) or metal-organic framework (MOF) structures. In the current work, magnetic and phonon properties of Co-TODA have been studied by advanced spectroscopies and computations. The combined use of far-IR magneto-spectroscopy (FIRMS) and variable-temperature (VT) high-frequency and-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) gives spin Hamiltonian (SH) parameters: Axial zero field splitting (ZFS) parameter D as +38.0(1.0) < D & laquo; +40.2(1.0) cm(-1) and rhombic ZFS parameter E as 0 & laquo; |E| <= 7.3(1.0) cm(-1), showing that Co-TODA has the easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. Two Co(II )centers in the CP, as determined by synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 15(2) K, show similar magnetic properties indistinguishable in FIRMS at 5.3(3) K or in HFEPR at 5-150 K. Ab initio calculations explore the origin of the magnetic anisotropy and magnetostructural correlations. VT inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra of Co-TODA have been obtained to show the phonon properties of the CP. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, giving both a calculated INS spectrum and spin distributions in Co-TODA, demonstrate that, compared with other high-spin CoII complexes, the larger the spin density on a metal ion, the larger the ZFS in the complex. Pulsed X-band EPR studies probe relaxations of the Co-II ions from the M-S = +1/2 to -1/2 state in the ground Kramers doublet (KD), yielding spin-lattice (T-1) and spin-spin relaxation (T-2) times. The work reported here highlights the versatility and power of the spectroscopic techniques and computations in the characterization of magnetic and phonon properties of a CP and the understanding of its magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract:Low-coordinate metallic ions have been well recognized for constructing good-performance single ion magnets (SIMs) due to their enhanced magnetic anisotropy; however, the incorporation of such specific ions into coordination polymers is still challenging. Here, we reported two new CoII coordination polymers, namely [Co(pdms)(bpe)] n (1) and {[Co(pdms)(tpb)]·H2O·tpb} n (2) (H2pdms = 1,2-bis(methanesulfonamido)benzene, bpe = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethane, tpb = 1,2,4,5-tetra(4-pyridyl)benzene). Single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments indicated that the CoII centers in both 1 and 2 display a distorted tetrahedral geometry with quasi C 2v symmetry and are linked into a one-dimensional (1D) zig-zag chain via the ditopic bridging ligand of bpe in 1 while a ribbon chain via the tetradentate linker of tpb in 2. Magnetic studies revealed the easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of the CoII ions with different zero-field splitting D of −19 cm–1 (1) and −33 cm–1 (2), likely due to the distinct changes in the Npy–Co–Npy bite angles (100.20° (1) vs. 93.90° (2)). Moreover, slow magnetic relaxation proceeded via different relaxation mechanisms under applied dc fields was observed, giving an effective energy barrier (U eff) of 69.6 K for 1 and 76.6 K for 2, respectively. The ab initio calculations on both the polymers further confirmed the sign and magnitude of the ZFS parameters and nicely reproduced the experimental results. Our study demonstrated a great potential for applying the well-studied and highly anisotropic 4-coordinate metal ions within a coordination polymer, opening a viable means to tuning magnetic anisotropy via topological control.

Abstract:Three novel coordination polymers with azide and a bifunctional zwitterionic ligand bearing carboxylate and tetrazolate as bridging groups, [M(L)(N(3))]·xH(2)O [L=1-(carboxylatomethyl)-4-(5-tetrazolato)pyridinium, M=Cu (1, x=2), Ni (2, x=1), and Co (3, x=1)], have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography and magnetic measurements. The compounds consist of two-dimensional coordination layers in which uniform anionic chains with the unprecedented tricomponent (μ-azide)(μ-tetrazolate)(μ-carboxylate) bridges are cross-linked by cationic 1-methylenepyridinium spacers. The tricomponent bridges induce ferromagnetic interactions in all the compounds. Furthermore, this isostructural series of ferromagnetic-chain-based compounds has allowed us to observe distinct bulk properties that are dependent upon the natures of the different spin carriers: with the isotropic Cu(II) ion, 1 exhibits a paramagnetic phase of the ferromagnetic chains without long-range magnetic order above 2 K; with the weakly anisotropic Ni(II) ions, 2 displays antiferromagnetic ordering and field-induced metamagnetism without slow dynamic relaxation; and with Co(II), which has strong magnetic anisotropy due to first-order spin-orbital coupling, 3 exhibits magnetic hysteresis and slow magnetization dynamics typical of single-chain magnets.

Abstract:The pursuit of molecule‐based magnetic memory materials contributes significantly to high‐density information storage research in the frame of the ongoing information technologies revolution. Remarkable progress has been achieved in both transition metal (TM) and lanthanide based single‐molecule magnets (SMMs). Notably, six‐coordinated CoII SMMs hold particular research significance owing to the economic and abundant nature of 3d TM ions compared to lanthanide ions, the substantial spin‐orbit coupling of CoII ions, the potential for precise control over coordination geometry, and the air‐stability of coordination‐saturated structures. In this review, we will summarize the progress made in six‐coordinated CoII SMMs, organized by their coordination geometry and molecular structure similarity. Valuable insights, principles, and new mechanism gleaned from this research and remaining issues that need to be addressed will also be discussed to guide future optimization.

Abstract:Two mononuclear tetrahedral Co(II) complexes (HNEt3)(2)[Co(L-1)(2)]center dot H2O (1) and (Bu4N)(2)[Co(L-2)(2)]center dot H2O (2) (H2L1 = N,N'-bis(p-toluenesulfonyl) oxamide, H2L 2= N,N'-diphenyloxamide) have been synthesized, and their structures have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both complexes adopt distorted tetrahedral coordination geometries surrounding the Co(II) center, which is ligated by two doubly deprotonated oxamide ligands oriented perpendicularly to each other. Their axial magnetic anisotropies were revealed by the direct current (dc) magnetic measurements, high-field and high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance, and theoretical calculations. Both complexes display slow magnetic relaxation in the absence of an applied dc field. Upon the application of the 0.15 T dc field, the quantum tunneling of magnetization is efficiently suppressed. In addition, both complexes display hysteresis loops with different field sweep rates at 1.8 K, which is rarely observed for Co(II) single-ion magnets (SIMs).
