Abstract:Three two-dimensional Co-II complexes, namely, [Co(dps)(2)Cl-2](n) (1), [Co(dps)(2)Br-2](n) (2), and [Co(dps)(2)(H2O)(2) center dot I-2 center dot(H2O)(4)](n) (3) (where dps = 4,4'-dipyridyl sulfide), have been synthesized using a rationally designed synthetic approach and characterized structurally and magnetically. Although they crystallize in different space groups, these compounds all have similar two-dimensional (4,4) layer structures where the Co2+ centers are bridged by the bis.monodentate) ligand dps. In addition, the coordination geometry of the Co2+ centers is of a general CoN4X2 octahedral environment formed by four equatorial N atoms from four dps ligands and two X atoms (X = Cl, Br, and O atoms for 1-3, respectively) in the axial positions. Ab initio calculations revealed that due to the strong spin-orbit coupling, the spin Hamiltonian containing the zero-field splitting parameters D and E cannot be used to describe their magnetic anisotropy. According to the calculation, the g(z) values for the spin-orbit ground doublets of 1-3 are larger than the g(x) and g(y) values, which indicates the easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of these compounds. Due to the existence of the magnetic anisotropy, field-induced single-ion magnet behavior can be observed in all these complexes. This work illustrated that care should be taken to interpret the magnetic data of octahedral Co-II compounds. In addition, extended frameworks with long and flexible organic spacers are good candidates for the construction of SIMs with different axial ligands and different magnetic properties.

Abstract:A new four-coordinated high-spin Co(II) complex was synthesized through the reactions of Co(NSC)2 with bathocuproine, by the diffusion method, resulting in an infinite one-dimension chain. Both static and dynamic magnetic properties were measured. The magnetic properties investigation shows that the single CoII ion properties dominate the magnetic behavior in the complex. Despite the presence of a four-coordinated single CoII ion, no SMM properties were exhibited by the complex.

Abstract:Based on a benzimidazole derivative and three different dicarboxylates, three new cobalt(II) complexes, namely [Co(1,3-BDC)(2)(MBIm)(2)] (1), [Co(SCA)(2)(MBIm)(2)](n) (2), and {[Co(1,4-BDC)(3)(MBIm)(2)]center dot 2DMF}(n) (3), (1,3-BDC = benzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid, SCA = succinic acid, 1,4-BDC = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid, MBIm = 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole), have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that 1 is a mononuclear neutral complex possessing a distorted tetrahedral geometry, 2 is a one-dimensional (1D) chain coordination polymer with the Co2+ centers arranged in T-d symmetry, and 3 is a geometrically frustrated two-dimensional (2D) framework constructed from linear trimeric Co-3 units with a mixed T-d-O-h-T-d geometry. Magnetic investigation revealed the easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of the Co2+ ions in 1 and 2, and field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviors were observed at very low temperatures with an effective energy barrier of U-eff = 51.8 K and 11.3 K for 1 and 2, respectively. Notably, complex 2 is the first example of a 1D SIM featuring fourcoordinate metal centers. For 3, no long-range magnetic ordering was established even at 1.8 K, which is mainly attributed to spin frustration. These studies illustrate that a mixed benzimidazole-dicarboxylate strategy is an effective strategy for the design and construction of functional molecular magnetic materials with distinct magnetic properties and structural diversity.

Abstract:Two isomeric Co(II) complexes with the same general molecular formulas of [Co(napy)2(NO3)2] (napy = 1, 8-naphthyridine) have been synthesized. X-ray singlecrystal structural determination demonstrates that two compounds exhibit highly irregular six- (1) and seven-coordinate (2) geometries, respectively. The magnetic measurements, X-band EPR data and theoretical calculations were thoroughly investigated. Both complexes show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, of which the slow magnetic relaxation in 2 is attributed to an easy-plane anisotropy.

Abstract:Starting from the pentagonal bipyramidal single-ion magnet [Co(tdmmb)(H2O)(2)][BF4](2) and a series of linear bridging ligands of different lengths, three new cobalt(II) one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers, [Co(tdmmb)(pyz)][BF4](2)center dot CH3CN center dot H2O (1), [Co(tdmmb)(apy)][BF4](2)center dot 2CH(3)CN (2), and [Co(tdmmb)(bpe)][BF4](2)center dot 3CH(3)CN (3) (tdmmb = 1,3,10,12-tetramethyl-1,2,11,12-tetra-aza[3](2,6) pyridino[3](2,9)-1,10-phenanthrolinophan-2,10-diene) (pyz = pyrazine) (apy = 4-aminopyridine) (bpe = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl) ethane)), have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Symmetric ligands pyz and bpe result in the nearly linear chains in 1 and 3, while the asymmetric ligand apy leads to the zig-zag chain in 2. As the length of the ligands increases, the intrachain Co center dot center dot center dot Co distance also increases, i.e. 7.56, 7.70, and 13.85 angstrom for 1-3, respectively. Magnetic investigation revealed the gradual decrease in the magnetic interactions between the Co2+ ions from 1 to 3, along with the increase in the intrachain Co-Co distances. Due to the existence of the weak antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction, the SIM behavior of the starting material is surpressed in compounds 1 and 2, and they show a simple paramagnetic behavior. While for 3, field-induced slow magnetic relaxation was observed at a low temperature with an energy barrier of U-eff = 19 K. This observation suggests that the magnetic interaction between the Co2+ centers in 3 is negligible, consistent with the very long Co-Co distance in 3. These 1D compounds are rare chain compounds composed of metal centers with a nearly D-5h symmetry. Notably, compound 3 is the second example of a 1D Co(II) chain compound displaying a SIM behaviour. These studies illustrated that the magnetic interaction between the SIMs can be used to tune slow magnetic relaxation.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials offer a promising platform for nanoscale spintronics and for exploration of novel physical phenomena. Here, we predict a diverse range of magnetic orders in cobalt-based 2D single septuple layers CoX2Y4, namely, CoBi2Te4, CoBi2Se2Te2, CoBi2Se4, and CoSb2Te4. Notably, CoBi2Te4 presents intrinsic non-collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM), while the others display collinear AFM. The emergence of AFM in all CoX2Y4 materials is attributed to the antiferromagnetic 90 degrees Co-Te(Se)-Co superexchange coupling. The origin of non-collinear/collinear orders lies in competing Heisenberg exchange interactions within the Co triangular lattice. A pivotal factor governing the non-collinear order of CoBi2Te4 is the vanishingly small ratio of exchange coupling between next-nearest neighbour Co and the nearest neighbour Co (J(2)/J(1) similar to 0.01). Furthermore, our investigation into strain effects on CoX2Y4 lattices demonstrates the tunability of the magnetic state of CoSb2Te4 from collinear to non-collinear. Our prediction of the unique non-collinear AFM in 2D suggests the potential for observing extraordinary magnetic phenomena in 2D, including non-collinear scattering and magnetic domain walls.

Abstract:Two Co(II) and Mn(II) coordination polymers, which have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions, are isomorphous with magnetic Δ-chains containing trinuclear triangular [M(3)(μ(3)-OH)] clusters. The Δ-chains are bridged by isonicotinic spacers to generate a two-dimensional scalariform layer structure. Magnetic investigations indicate that Co(II) compound exhibits not only spin canting but also metamagnetic behaviors, while only spin-canted antiferromagnetic behaviors was observed in Mn(II) compound.

Abstract:Tuning the magnetic anisotropy of metal ions remains highly interesting in the design of improved single-molecule magnets (SMMs). We herein report synthetic, structural, magnetic, and computational studies of four mononuclear Co-II complexes, namely [Co(hfac)(2)(MeCN)(2)] (1), [Co(hfac)(2)(Spy)(2)] (2), [Co(hfac)(2)(MBIm)(2)] (3), and [Co(hfac)(2)(DMF)(2)] (4) (MeCN=acetonitrile, hfac=hexafluoroacetylacetone, Spy=4-styrylpyridine, MbIm=5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole, DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide), with distorted octahedral geometry constructed from hexafluoroacetylacetone (hfac) and various axial ligands. By a building block approach, complexes 2-4 were synthesized by recrystallization of the starting material of 1 from various ligands containing solution. Magnetic and theoretical studies reveal that 1-4 possess large positive D values and relative small E parameters, indicating easy-plane magnetic anisotropy with significant rhombic anisotropy in 1-4. Dynamic alternative current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that these complexes exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under external fields, suggesting field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs) of 1-4. These results provide a promising platform to achieve fine tuning of magnetic anisotropy through varying the axial ligands based on Co(II) bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonate) complexes.

Abstract:Five Co-II complexes based on H3L1 and H3L2, namely, [Co-3(L-1)(2)(4,4'-bipy)(H2O)(3)](n) (1), [Co-3(L-1)(2)(4,4'-bipy)(3)(H2O)(4)](n) (2), {[Co-2(Li)(4,4'-bibp)(mu(3)-OH)(H2O)]center dot H2O}(n) (3), {[CO3(L-2)(2)(dib)(3)]center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (4), and [CO3(L-2)(2)(4,4'-bibp)(3)](n) (5) [(H3L1 = 4-[(3-carboxynaphthalen-2-yl)oxy]phthalic acid, H3L2 = 3-[(3-carboxynaphthalen-2-yl)oxy]phthalic acid, 4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, cub = 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl) benzene, and 4,4'-bibp = 4,4'-bis(imidazol)biphenyl] have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions. Complex 1 displays a (4,4,6) connected topology with a Schlafli symbol of (4.10(4).12)(4(11).6(4))(4(8).6)(2,) and the two-dimensional (2D) structure was assembled to form a three-dimensional (3D) framework by C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions of internaphthalene rings, showing the dominant antiferromagnetic exchanges in a triangular {Co3} cluster. Complex 2 presents a 2D (3,4,4)-connected network with a Schlafli symbol of (5.6(2))(2)(5(2).6(3).7)(2)(5(4).8(2)) and weakly antiferromagnetic behavior. Complex 3 features a novel (4,4,8)-connected topology with a Schlafli symbol of (3(2).4.5(2).6)(2)(3(2).4(2).5(2))(2)(3(4).4(6).5(8).6(7).7(2).8). In addition, complex 3 based on a parallelogram-shaped [Co-4(mu(3)-OH)(2)](6) secondary building unit provides antiferromagnetic interactions mediated by mu(3)-OH and syn-syn-COO- groups. The driving forces in 3D supramolecular frameworks are C-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot pi, and pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking interactions for 2-3. Complexes 4-5 have an identical (4,4,5)-connected 2D network with a Schlafli symbol of (4.6(4).8)(4(2).6(7).8)(2)(4(4).6(2))(2). Additionally, the C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds between naphthalene rings and uncoordinated carboxy oxygen atoms extend 2D networks into 3D supramolecular frameworks. Magnetic investigations reveal that 4 and 5 exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions in the linear {Co3} unit.

Abstract:The crystal structures and magnetic properties of compounds [M-II(apo)(N(CN)(2))(2)], where M=Co (1), Ni (2) or Mn (3), apo=2-aminopyridine N-oxide, have been determined. The structural analyses revealed that they are isomorphous, and all belong to monoclinic space group P2(1)/n. The metal(II) ions display distorted octahedral co-ordination, with four terminal N atoms of different [N(CN)(2)](-) ligands and two O atoms of different apo ligands. Two ions are bridged by two mu -O atoms to form a dimer subunit. Those dimers are further linked to each other by [N(CN)(2)](-) resulting in a three-dimensional structure. The magnetic properties of the compounds were investigated in the temperature range 2-300 K for 1 and 2 and 4-300 K for 3. The values for the intradimer spin coupling constant J were estimated to be -17.8, -40, -1.3 cm(-1) for 1-3, respectively, indicative of antiferromagnetic interaction.

Abstract:A one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymer [Co(btca)(1/2)(mbpy)](n) (1, mbpy=4,4 '-Dimethyl-2,2 '-bipyridyl, H(4)btca=1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid) constructed by a mixed tetracarboxylic-dipyridyl ligand strategy with a ribbon topology was synthesized and magnetically characterized. Magnetic studies combined with theoretical calculations reveal large easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of the central Co(II) ions in a highly distorted five-coordination geometry. Interestingly, field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior was evidenced in the chain compound, making the cobalt(II) coordination ribbon to be the first five-coordinate SIM chain.

Abstract:Two mononuclear, seven-coordinate Co(ii) and Fe(ii) complexes [CoII(BPA-TPA)](BF4)2 (1-Co) and [FeII(BPA-TPA)](ClO4)2 (2-Fe) with a capped trigonal prismatic coordination geometry have been synthesized from the pentapyridyldiamine (BPA-TPA) ligand. 1-Co exhibits easy plane anisotropy in which slow magnetic relaxation is observed under a 1.0 kOe dc field. It is the first example of a single-ion magnet (SIM) of a 3d transition metal ion with a capped trigonal prismatic configuration. 2-Fe is not a SIM at 1.8 K.

Abstract:Although a great number of single-ion magnets (SIMs) and spin-crossover (SCO) compounds have been discovered, multifunctional materials with the combination of SCO and SIM properties are extremely scarce. Here magnetic studies have been carried out for a mononuclear, five-coordinate cobalt(ii) complex [Co(3,4-lut)4Br]Br (1) with square pyramidal geometry. Direct-current magnetic measurement confirms the spin transition between the S = 1/2 and 3/2 states in the range of 150-290 K with a small hysteresis loop. Frequency- and temperature-dependent alternating-current magnetic susceptibility reveals slow magnetization relaxation under an applied dc field of 3000 Oe. The work here presents the first instance of the five-coordinate mononuclear cobalt(ii)-based SIM exhibiting the thermally induced complete SCO.

Abstract:For a long time, the cobalt(II) complex ([Co(napy)(4)](ClO4)(2)) (napy=1, 8-naphthyridine) has been considered as an eight-coordinate complex without any structural proof. After careful considerations, two complexes [Co(napy)(2)Cl-2] (1) and [Co(napy)(4)](ClO4)(2) (2) based on the bidentate ligand napy were synthesized and structurally characterized. X-ray single-crystal structural determination showed that the cobalt(II) center in [Co(napy)(2)Cl-2] (1) is four-coordinate with a tetrahedral geometry (T-d), while [Co(napy)(4)](ClO4)(2) (2) is seven-coordinate rather than eight-coordinate with a capped trigonal prism geometry (C-2v). Direct-current (dc) magnetic data revealed that complexes 1 and 2 possess positive zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters of 11.08 and 25.30 cm(-1), respectively, with easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. Alternating current(ac) susceptibility measurements revealed that both complexes showed slow magnetic relaxation behaviour. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that the presence of easy-plane magnetic anisotropy (D>0) for complexes 1 and 2 is in agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, these results pave the way to obtain four-coordinate and seven-coordinate cobalt(II) single-ion magnets (SIMs) by using a bidentate ligand.

Single crystal X-ray analyses revealed that their structures exhibit different three-dimensional topologies as a result of the addition of [NH2(CH3)(2)](+) during the synthesis of 2. For both 1 and 2, the geometry of the [Mo(CN)(7)](4-) unit is a slightly distorted capped trigonal prism; all Fe-II centers are hexacoordinate and adopt a distorted octahedral configuration. Compound 1 is a three-nodal 3,4,7-connected net with the point symbol of {4.6(2)}{4(5).6}{4(6).6(12).8(3)}, while compound 2 is a five-nodal 4,4,4,6,7-connected net with the point symbol of {4(4).6(2)}{4(5).6}(4){4(6).6(7).8(2)}{4(9).6(11).8}(2). magnetic studies revealed that both compounds exhibit magnetic ordering below 65 K. Apart from the plethora of Mn-II-[Mo(CN)(7)](4-) compounds documented in the literature, these two Fe-II-[Mo(CN)(7)](4-) compounds are the only other [Mo(CN)(7)](4-) extended structures to be characterized by single crystal structures to date.
Field-induced Single-Ion Magnet Behavior in a Cobalt(ii) Coordination Polymer Constructed by a Mixed Bipyridyl-Tetracarboxylate Strategy

Abstract:A porous two-dimensional (2D) cobalt(II) metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Co(H(2)tbca)(bpb)(H2O)(2)]center dot bpb}(n) (H(4)tbca = 1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid; bpb = 1,4-bis(pyrid-4-yl)benzene), was synthesized and structurally characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the monometallic Co2+ ion acted as coordination nodes in a distorted octahedral geometry and bridged by H(2)tbca(2-) and bpb ligands, giving rise to a porous 2D sql network. Thermal analysis reveals high thermal stability of the framework material even losing its guest molecules. Magnetic studies showed that the six-coordinated Co2+ ions exhibit large easy-plane magnetic anisotropy with the zero-field splitting parameter D = 62.1 cm(-1). For the presence of significant single-ion magnetic anisotropy, single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior through combined Direct and Raman mechanisms was evidenced with the effective energy U-eff = 31.8 cm(-1). The forgoing result provides a new 2D cobalt (II) SIM-MOF and a potential bipyridyl-tetracarboxylate approach for the construction of SIM frameworks.
The distinguishing effect of the magnetic states of cobalt on the performance of single-molecule magnet behaviors in a closely related CoIIIDyIII and CoIIDyIII complexes

Abstract:This report details the synthesis and characterization of heterobimetallic 3d-4f complexes, labeled as 1 and 2, utilizing a new Schiff base ligand derived from the condensation of 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with a methyl-substituted o-vanillin. A comprehensive structural analysis reveals that complex 1 comprises a CoIII-DyIII assembly, bridged by two alkoxide groups, in which the CoIII center adopts an octahedral geometry, and the DyIII ion is situated within a DyO9 coordination sphere. Under nearly identical reaction conditions, an intramolecular nucleophilic attack led to a subtle modification of approximately one-half of the ligand from H2L to HLʹ, resulting in the isolation of complex 2. This complex features a CoII-DyIII core, bridged by a pivalate ion along with phenoxide groups. To the best of our knowledge, this is a rare instance of dinuclear Co-Dy systems exhibiting variable oxidation states of the cobalt center within a similar ligand framework. Both complexes 1 and 2 exhibit field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization, and theoretical analysis revealed that in complex 1, the principal magnetic axis aligns with the shortest Dy–O bond, underscoring the charge polarization effect exerted by the diamagnetic CoIII ion in tuning the crystal field around the DyIII ion, thereby influencing its magnetic anisotropy. Conversely, in complex 2, the ferromagnetic interaction between the CoII and DyIII ions significantly reduces quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM). Additionally, we employed Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QT-AIM) calculations to investigate the nature of the coordination bonds in these 3d-4f complexes, which provided insights into the crystal field strength around the LnIII ions and their subsequent magnetic anisotropy. This study broadens the exploration of Schiff base-derived 3d-4f complexes and their magnetic properties, highlighting the potential for further advancements in this field.
