Abstract:Components with multiple failure modes may encounter imperfect preventive maintenance triggered by inspections during their two-stage failure. Employing delay-time concepts and accumulative age, a new imperfect-maintenance model for these components is presented under the assumptions that failure modes are independent of each other and all kinds of defects will be dealt with in each maintenance task. Reliability and cost models are derived. Their characteristics are analyzed in numerical simulations. The results show components with more failure modes and worse imperfect inspection maintenance will have lower reliability, lower expected cycle cost and higher average cost per unit time. With an increasing inspection interval, the cycle cost will monotonically decrease while the average cost per unit time may have a local minimum. If inspection maintenance is insufficient, the minimum of the average cost per unit time will disappear, as does the best inspection interval.

Abstract:Through introducing the improvement factor limited by maintenance time and preventive maintenance cost,this paper establishes the imperfect preventive maintenance model by considering two different failure types(Type I and Type II) to get the maintenance strategies of relative system equipments.A new improvement factor is constructed,which depends on the number of maintenance events and the cost of preventive maintenance.The model by taking the maintenance cost rate of minimum unit time within maintenance period as target,obtains the optimal maintenance intervals and the preventive maintenance times under different reliability requirements,analyzes the sensitivity of cost rate curve and the time interval on the different parameters,and discusses the influence of each parameter on optimal maintenance time of the system.

Abstract:Maintenance problems of deteriorateing systems have been studied in the past several decades. Since most systems after maintenance are somewhere between as good as new and as bad as old, this paper developed Kijima's virtual age model to describe the imperfect preventive maintenance. A new improvement factor was proposed to evaluate the age restoration after the maintenance, which was the function of the system's age and the preventive maintenance cost rate. Life of the system was assumed to follow two parameters Weibull distribution since it was one of the most commonly adopted distributions to fit cumulative failure problems. Two models were given in this paper. By minimizing the maintenance cost rate, the optimal maintenance time interval was obtained. The numerical example show the benefits of the model based on failure limit policy, which can also provide decision support for the operation. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:“System-perspective” proposed by “A framework to practical predictive maintenance modeling for multi-state systems” by Tan C.M. and Raghavan N. [A framework to practical predictive maintenance modeling for multi-state systems. Reliab Eng Syst Saf 2008;93(8):1138–50] is a very useful method to evaluate and optimize the maintenance strategy for complex systems, especially for multi-state systems (MSS). The commented paper proposes an innovative process and modeling method to present imperfect maintenance effects on MSS, but there exist some incorrect points and misunderstandings. In this paper, these problems are pointed out and are attempted to be corrected under the original framework of the commented paper.

Abstract:This paper deals with the problem of scheduling imperfect preventive maintenance (PM) of some equipment. It uses a model due to Kijima in which each application of PM reduces the equipment's effective age (but without making it as good as new). The approach presented here involves minimizing a performance function which allows for the costs of minimal repair and eventual system replacement as well as for the costs of PM during the equipment's operating lifetime. The paper describes a numerical investigation into the sensitivity of optimum schedules to different aspects of an age-reduction model (including the situation when parts of a system are non-maintainable—i.e., unaffected by PM).

Abstract:The influence of imperfect maintenance on failure process has not been considered in the delay time model(DTM).Introducing the concept of proportional age reduction model,an improved DTM is proposed.It is assumed that the inspection maintenance is imperfect while the failure maintenance is perfect.Imperfect maintenance affects the instantaneous rates of defect and failure.The long-run average cost per unit time is derived from the assumptions.The numerical examples show that the imperfect maintenance heightens the long-run average cost per unit time,and an optimal inspection interval of cost minimization exists if the inspection maintenance is near to perfect maintenance,while the optimal interval disappears if the improvement factor decreases enough.

Economic Manufacturing Quantity (EMQ) models assume that maintenance time consumed by inspection and restoration in the production cycle is negligible. This paper addresses the joint problem of production planning and inspection schedules with considering maintenance time under the realistic assumptions that the elapsed time until the production process shift is exponentially distributed and the optimal production run and maintenance schedule are equal-interval. A simple model has been developed for the simultaneous determination of the length of the production run and the number of inspections for a deteriorating production system with considering maintenance time. Then the problem is solved by using an approximation to the cost function. The resulting EMQ model is found to be an adjustment to that ignoring maintenance time. Finally, the relationships of optimal production run time or the optimal number of inspections and cost penalty by using the two models are examined.

Examples are presented to analyze the proposed methods. As demonstrated in the case study, the results from the model is very close to the results from real systems.

Abstract:The influence of the system maintenance on system failure is modeled in an imperfect maintenance model based on periodic prevention.Most maintenance activities cannot restore the system to as good as new.The age restoration effect is described by an improvement factor with the maintenance costs also included in the model.The lifetime of a deteriorating system is assumed to follow a Weibull distribution.The maintenance cost and the cost with failure limit were minimized to get the optimal maintenance interval.A case study shows that maintenance policies with the failure limit result in higher maintenance costs.However,such policies can ensure that the equipment reliability is kept above a predetermined level and the risk of sudden functional failure is low.The model quantitively determines the optimal maintenance interval to provide decision support for system maintenance.

Abstract:This paper studies a maintenance model for an one-unit degenerative system with multiple failure states based on the proportional hazards and proportional reversed hazards models. The authors investigate how the variation of system configuration parameters have an impact on both operating and repair times and hence the system performance. Furthermore, the authors also derive the explicit expression for the long-run average cost per unit time. An algorithm to locate the optimal number of repairs in a renewal cycle is discussed as well.
