Abstract:Traditional assembly do not consider mechanical deformation based on the rigid body hypothesis, while assembly precision has close relationship with part’ deformation in practice. In this paper, temperature, gravity and working load are taken into account to calculate the deflection occurred in assemblies. Both manufacturing error and deformation error are taken into consideration to establish deviation calculation model based on Jacobian-torsor model. A tailstock is taken as an example to verify the feasibility of the proposed method.
Optimal procurement strategy for multi-echelon remanufacturing systems under quality uncertainty

Abstract:Uncertainties in the quality and price of returned items add to the management complexity of remanufacturing system. To achieve the optimal procurement strategy for improved economic performance, this paper develops a mathematical model to quantify the impact of quality-based categorization of returned products under different return scenarios. Through the stochastic analysis of quality uncertainty with returns, it derives the optimal procurement strategy for cost minimization. The results show that an optimal procurement decision leads to over 80% cost savings in multi-echelon remanufacturing systems. Further, to bridge the gap between optimality theory and practical applications, this paper employs maximum likelihood estimation to speculate the key parameters of quality distribution in an empirical case whereby the optimal procurement strategies are formulated. Thus, the study provides a mathematical foundation for remanufacturers to make optimal decisions for the minimization of total cost. Importantly, the paper innovatively employs a quality coefficient to signal the overall condition in a batch of returned cores before accepting or dismantling, and then establishes the explicit relationship among the quality coefficient and production indexes in remanufacturing.

Abstract:This paper considers an inventory and production-planning problem for a contract manufacturer who anticipates an order of a single product, but with uncertain quantity. To meet the challenges of long component procurement lead times and limited assembly capacity, which may render production time insufficient to assemble total order quantity, the manufacturer may need to procure components or even assemble some quantities of the final product before receiving the confirmation of the actual order quantity. We present profit-maximization models that make optimal inventory and production decisions in the above assemble-to-order environment. We also consider the option of outsourcing, so that the manufacturer can outsource part of his production to an external facility that also has limited capacity. We establish structural properties of optimal solutions and develop efficient solution procedures for the proposed problems. We also provide sensitivity analysis of the optimal decisions, and some managerial insights.

Abstract:<p>Sourcing components in a complex global supplier network may lead to a high degree of supply uncertainty. Events, such as unexpected production defects or insufficient supplier capacity, can cause unexpected shortages of required components and halt the assembly of final products. Accordingly, the assembly enterprises must effectively manage various supply uncertainties in their component ordering decisions to avoid such component shortfalls. These issues have guided this research to investigate the optimal ordering strategies of an assembler facing the following two types of supply uncertainty: the uncertain production capacity of a standard component (component 1) and the random production yield of a core component (component 2). The assembler makes the component ordering decisions before these supply uncertainties are realized. We characterize the optimal ordering decision and find that the assembler should order components 1 and 2 according to a fixed ratio, which only depends on the random yield of component 2 and the production cost of component 1, but not on the uncertain capacity of component 1. A case study is presented to further explore the intertwined effects of these two uncertainties in an assembly system. Finally, the model is extended to consider a secondary option of buying additional component 1s after observing some or all of the supply uncertainties, and this secondary option endows the firm with different capabilities in counteracting the supply uncertainties.</p>

Abstract:Chen and Liu [‘Procurement Strategies in the Presence of the Spot Market-an Analytical Framework’, Production Planning and Control, 18, 297–309] presented the optimum profit model between the producers and the purchasers for the supply chain system with a pure procurement policy. However, their model with a simple manufacturing cost did not consider the used cost of the customer. In this study, the modified Chen and Liu's model will be addressed for determining the optimum product and process parameters. The authors propose a modified Chen and Liu's model under the two-stage screening procedure. The surrogate variable having a high correlation with the measurable quality characteristic will be directly measured in the first stage. The measurable quality characteristic will be directly measured in the second stage when the product decision cannot be determined in the first stage. The used cost of the customer will be measured by adopting Taguchi's quadratic quality loss function. The optimum purchaser's order quantity, the producer's product price and the process quality level will be jointly determined by maximising the expected profit between them.
