Abstract:Stimuli-responsive bio-based polymeric systems are gaining considerable attention as intelligent versatile tools that show great potential in various fields. In this review, an overview is given of recent developments of stimuli-responsive bio-based polymeric systems. The characteristics of bio-based polymers in different applications are discussed and the superiority of these advanced stimuli-responsive bio-based polymeric systems is highlighted. Furthermore, several emerging applications of these systems including intelligent drug delivery, responsive food packaging and smart water treatment are discussed and the section of intelligent drug delivery is emphasized in detail. Finally, the respective prospects and limitations inherent to these systems are addressed.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive polymer is a class of macromolecular system with smart behavior. Their macromolecular structure and state can be great changed in response to external stimuli, such as pH value, light, thermal, voltage, redox and gas. Then their physicochemical properties will be influenced and the functionalities will be realized. Stimuli-responsive polymers have shown wide prospective applications in the fields of nanomaterials, life science, medical science and so on. This review introduces the recent progress of the authors' group on the synthesis, self-assembly, functionality and applications of stimuli-responsive macromolecular systems.

Abstract:Intelligent polymers or stimuli-responsive polymers may exhibit distinct transitions in physical-chemical properties, including conformation, polarity, phase structure and chemical composition in response to changes in environmental stimuli. Due to their unique ‘intelligent’ characteristics, stimuli-sensitive polymers have found a wide variety of applications in biomedical and nanotechnological fields. This review focuses on the recent developments in biomedical application of intelligent polymer systems, such as intelligent hydrogel systems, intelligent drug delivery systems and intelligent molecular recognition systems. Also, the possible future directions for the application of these intelligent polymer systems in the biomedical field are presented.

Abstract:There has been growing interest in polymeric systems that break down or undergo property changes in response to stimuli. Such polymers can play important roles in biological systems, where they can be used to control the release of therapeutics, modulate imaging signals, actuate movement, or direct the growth of cells. In this Perspective, after discussing the most important stimuli relevant to biological applications, we will present a selection of recent exciting developments. The growing importance of stimuli-responsive polysaccharides will be discussed, followed by a variety of stimuli-responsive polymeric systems for the delivery of small molecule drugs and nucleic acids. Switchable polymers for the emerging area of therapeutic response measurement in theranostics will be described. Then, the diverse functions that can be achieved using hydrogels cross-linked covalently, as well as by various dynamic approaches will be presented. Finally, we will discuss some of the challenges and future perspectives for the field.

Abstract:Stimulus-responsive, or 'smart', polymers belong to the classes of functional polymers. There is a wide-range application of stimulus-responsive polymers in numerous areas such as drug controlled releasing, gene vectors, nanoparticles, nano-reactors, and it shows broad prospects. Therefore the smart polymers have attracted more and more interests during the last decade. Most of the stimulus-responsive polymers are amphiphilic polymers which are able to self-assemble to form series patterns of aggregates such as micelles and vesicles. When the aggregates are subjected to some external environmental stimuli, it will produce the corresponding specific response. In particular the functional block responses specifically and as a result the structure phase transition and volume phase transition of the whole functional polymer will emerge. Stimulus-responsive polymers can be classified into several categories, depending upon the type of the external stimulus. Herein, we review some of the most interesting examples of recent advances and progressive application of the responsive polymers based on different stimuli, such as pH, temperature, light, molecular, electro-stimuli and chirality responsive polymers. The article summarizes the structural characteristics and synthetic methods. The mechanism of their functions and the relationship between the structure and properties are briefly discussed. The potential applications and the long-term prospect of these fields are introduced.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive polymers have received tremendous attention from scientists and engineers for several decades due to the wide applications of these smart materials in biotechnology and nanotechnology. Driven by the complex functions of living systems, multi-stimuli-responsive polymer materials have been designed and developed in recent years. Compared with conventional single- or dual-stimuli-based polymer materials, multi-stimuli-responsive polymer materials would be more intriguing since more functions and finer modulations can be achieved through more parameters. This critical review highlights the recent advances in this area and focuses on three types of multi-stimuli-responsive polymer materials, namely, multi-stimuli-responsive particles (micelles, micro/nanogels, vesicles, and hybrid particles), multi-stimuli-responsive films (polymer brushes, layer-by-layer polymer films, and porous membranes), and multi-stimuli-responsive bulk gels (hydrogels, organogels, and metallogels) from recent publications. Various stimuli, such as light, temperature, pH, reduction/oxidation, enzymes, ions, glucose, ultrasound, magnetic fields, mechanical stress, solvent, voltage, and electrochemistry, have been combined to switch the functions of polymers. The polymer design, preparation, and function of multi-stimuli-responsive particles, films, and bulk gels are comprehensively discussed here.

In this review, we systematically generalize the present state of biological stimuli-responsive polymer systems. We highlight several representative examples to specify the current problems and look ahead a clear sense of direction in this area.

Abstract:Bio-responsive polymers are the foundation for the construction of the smart systems that exhibit designed biomedical functions after receiving specific stimuli such as biological signals and pathological abnormalities. These stimulus-responsive systems have shown great promise of developing novel products in precision medicine, and relevant research has grown intensively in recent years. This review aims to outline the basic knowledge and recent progress in the advanced bio-responsive systems as well as the major challenges. The current bio-responsive systems mainly rely on physical, chemical and biological cues, and this review focuses on the strategies of molecular design for the incorporation of appropriate responsive building blocks. The potential applications, including controlled drug delivery, diagnostics and tissue regeneration, are introduced and promising research directions that benefit the medical translation and commercialization are also discussed.

Abstract:Polymeric stimuli‐responsive systems represent a group of materials that have experienced significant advancements in recent decades. These materials exhibit a physicochemical response based on various factors, such as temperature, pH, light, magnetism, insulin, and others. The promising future of biomedical sciences lies in the rapid and continuous development of these systems. Responsive polymer systems have the ability to change properties or behavior in response to external stimuli. The properties of responsive polymer systems can be fine‐tuned by adjusting the stimuli, enabling tailored responses for specific applications. These systems have applications in drug delivery, biosensors, tissue engineering, and more, as their ability to adapt and respond to dynamic environments leads to improved performance. However, challenges such as synthesis complexity, sensitivity limitations, and manufacturing issues need to be addressed for successful implementation. In our review, we provide a comprehensive summary on stimuli‐responsive polymer systems, delving into the intricacies of their mechanisms and actions. Future developments should focus on precision medicine, multifunctionality, reversibility, bioinspired designs, and integration with advanced technologies, driving the dynamic growth of sensitive polymer systems in biomedical applications.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive polymers exhibit properties that make them ideal candidates for biosensing and molecular diagnostics. Through rational design of polymer composition combined with new polymer functionalization and synthetic strategies, polymers with myriad responsivities,e.g., responses to temperature, pH, biomolecules, CO2, light, and electricity can be achieved. When these polymers are specifically designed to respond to biomarkers, stimuli-responsive devices/probes, capable of recognizing and transducing analyte signals, can be used to diagnose and treat disease. In this review, we highlight recent state-of-the-art examples of stimuli-responsive polymer-based systems for biosensing and bioimaging.

Abstract:Today, smart materials are commonly used in various fields of science and technology, such as medicine, electronics, soft robotics, the chemical industry, the automotive field, and many others. Smart polymeric materials hold good promise for the future due to their endless possibilities. This group of advanced materials can be sensitive to changes or the presence of various chemical, physical, and biological stimuli, e.g., light, temperature, pH, magnetic/electric field, pressure, microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, toxic substances, and many others. This review concerns the newest achievements in the area of smart polymeric materials. The recent advances in the designing of stimuli-responsive polymers are described in this paper.

Abstract:Benefiting from their responsiveness and adaptability, the stimuli-responsive polymers have been widely investigated and exploited in the various fields, such as environmental monitoring, electronics, photonics, controlled drug delivery, medical imaging and diagnostics. These potential applications have greatly promoted the development of advanced functional materials, and meanwhile set higher requirements for the smart materials in the aspects of the spatial structures, diverse linkages and variable functions. However, the linear functional polymers can not satisfy all the requirements of the multi-dimensional molecular design and acute sensitiveness due to the architectural limitation. Accordingly, stimuli-responsive hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) have been drawing more and more attention in recent years owing to their unique globular void-containing topological structure featured with a large number of terminal functional groups and branches, lower solution or melt viscosity, and better solubility. Therefore, design and synthesis of stimuli-responsive HBPs provide a robust tool for controlling the structure transition and creating the hierarchical sensitivity driven by different triggers. In this review, the developments and recent advances of preparation procedures, performance control and promising applications of various stimuli-responsive HBPs have been comprehensively summarized. Besides, the developing trend of stimuli-responsive HBPs is also discussed. It can be found that stimuli-responsive HBPs with different synthetic strategies and diverse performances have manifested more and more versatile applications.

Abstract:Polymeric nanoparticles with unique properties are currently considered as the most promising materials for biomedical applications including drug delivery and in-vitro/in vivo imaging. Of which, stimulus-responsive polymeric nanoparticles, usually termed as “intelligent” nanoparticles, are the nanoparticles which can undergo structure, shape, and property changes after being exposed to external signals including pH, temperature, magnetic field, photo, etc. Such environmental sensitive behaviors have been frequently used to modulate the macroscopical behaviors of the nanoparticles. This article focuses on the recent developments in the stimulus-responsive nanoparticles used for drug delivery and in-vitro/in vivo imaging, with an emphasis on double/multiple stimulus responsive systems and their biomedical applications.

Abstract:This review focuses on smart nano-materials built of stimuli-responsive (SR) polymers and will discuss their numerous applications in the biomedical field. The authors will first provide an overview of different stimuli and their corresponding, responsive polymers. By introducing myriad functionalities, SR polymers present a wide range of possibilities in the design of stimuli-responsive devices, making use of virtually all types of polymer constructs, from self-assembled structures (micelles, vesicles) to surfaces (polymer brushes, films) as described in the second section of the review. In the last section of this review the authors report on some of the most promising applications of stimuli-responsive polymers in nanomedicine. In particular, we will discuss applications pertaining to diagnosis, where SR polymers are used to construct sensors capable of selective recognition and quantification of analytes and physical variables, as well as imaging devices. We will also highlight some examples of responsive systems used for therapeutic applications, including smart drug delivery systems (micelles, vesicles, dendrimers...) and surfaces for regenerative medicine.

Abstract:Development of dual-stimuli-responsive and multi-stimuli-responsive smart polymeric materials becomes more and more important. The recent progresses in molecular-recognition and thermo-responsive composite smart linear polymers, smart microspheres and smart membranes based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) are reviewed in detail. The different kinds of smart materials are prepared by the same reaction mechanism, namely polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) into poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (PNG) polymer at first, followed by introduction of modified mono-6-deoxy-6-ethylenediamino-beta-cyclodextrin (ECD) or mono-6-deoxy-6-hexnediamino-beta-cyclodextrin (HCD) onto PNG polymer by virture of reaction between primary amino groups and epoxy groups. The effects of preparation conditions, the molar ratio of NIPAM to GMA, grafting yields, the types and concentrations of guest molecules on the thermo-responsibility and molecular-recognition characteristics of different composite smart polymeric materials are discussed. Moreover, the applications of composite smart polymeric membranes in affinity separation, controlled release and chrial separation are also discussed. The significance and future of molecular-recognition and thermo-responsive composite polymeric materials are commented.

Abstract:Functional polymer systems with stimuli responses have attracted great attention over the years due to their diverse range of applications. Such polymers are capable of altering their chemical and/or physical properties, such as chemical structures, chain conformation, solubility, shape, morphologies, and optical properties, in response to single or multiple stimuli. Among various stimuli-responsive polymers, those with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties possess the advantages of high sensitivity, fast response, large contrast, excellent photostability, and low background noise. The changes in fluorescence signal can be conveniently detected and monitored using portable instruments. The integration of AIE and stimuli responses into one polymer system provides a feasible and effective strategy for the development of smart polymers with high sensitivity to environmental variations. Here, we review the recent advances in the design, preparation, performance, and applications of functional synthetic polymer systems with AIE and stimuli responses. Various AIE-based polymer systems with responsiveness toward single physical or chemical stimuli as well as multiple stimuli are summarized with specific examples. The current challenges and perspectives on the future development of this research area will also be discussed at the end of this review.
