Abstract:Abstract Halogen bonding is emerging as a significant driving force for supramolecular self-assembly and has aroused great interest during the last two decades. Among the various halogen-bonding donors, we take notice of the ability of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,4-DITFB) to co-crystallize with diverse halogen-bonding acceptors in the range from neutral Lewis bases (nitrogen-containing compounds, N-oxides, chalcogenides, aromatic hydrocarbons and organometallic complexes) to anions (halide ions, thio/selenocyanate ions and tetrahedral oxyanions), leading to a great variety of supramolecular architectures such as discrete assemblies, 1D infinite chains and 2D/3D networks. Some of them act as promising functional materials (e.g. fluorescence, phosphorescence, optical waveguide, laser, non-linear optics, dielectric and magnetism) and soft materials (e.g. liquid crystal and supramolecular gel). Here we focus on the supramolecular structures of multicomponent complexes and their related physicochemical properties, highlight representative examples and show clearly the main directions that remain to be developed and improved in this area. From the point of view of crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry, the complexes summarized here should give helpful information for further design and investigation of the elusive category of halogen-bonding supramolecular functional materials.

Abstract:Using a nonplanar molecule as accepter and aryl iodidesas donors, three nonplanar cocrystals based on I···N halogen bonding are successfully fabricated. By changing the number and position of iodine in thecocrystals, the halogen bond, the π–π interactions between molecules are tuned, resulting the transformation of dimension and morphology of cocrystals. The application of organic crystal in different photoelectric device has different demand on the crystal structure and morphology, while the self‐assembly of different materials into crystals with a desired morphology remains a challenge. Herein, using three binary halogen‐bonded cocrystals involving a nonplanar halogen accepter molecule tetra(4‐pyridyl)‐tetrathiafulvalene (TTF(py)4), co‐crystallized with halogen donor aryl iodides C6F6‐xIx (x = 2,3, 1,3,5‐trifluoro‐2,4,6‐triiodobenzene (IFB), meta‐1,3‐diiodotetrafluorobenzene (mdIFB) or para‐1,3‐diiodotetrafluorobenzene (pdIFB)), are reported. TTF(py)4‐IFB cocrystals are formed primarily via N···I halogen bonds and F···H hydrogen bonds, while TTF(py)4‐mdIFB cocrystals and TTF(py)4‐pdIFB cocrystals are formed primarily via π–π Interactions, N···I halogen bonds and F···H hydrogen bonds, homogeneous π–π interactions are dominant in TTF(py)4‐mdIFB, while heterogeneous π–π interactions are dominant in TTF(py)4‐pdIFB. Through predicted morphology based on the attachment energy (Eatt) theory, especially π–π interaction, the influence of intermolecular interactions on crystal morphology is analyzed. The study demonstrates that the π–π interaction plays an important role in regulating the crystal structure and morphology, the work provides a deeper understanding of π–π interactions in nonplanar binary halogen‐bonded cocrystals.

Abstract:The structures of a series of 2:1 cocrystals formed between 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine and each of 1,2,4,5-tetrachloro-3,6-diiodobenzene, 2C7H10N2·C6Cl4I2, 1,2,4,5-tetrabromo-3,6-diiodobenzene, 2C7H10N2·C6Br4I2, 1-bromo-4-iodo-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene, 2C7H10N2·C6BrF4I, and 1,2-dibromo-4,5-difluoro-3,6-diiodobenzene, 2C7H10N2·C6Br2F2I2, are reported. In all five structures, the core halogen-bonded 2:1 trimolecular units have geometrically similar parameters, with the central halogen-bond donor flanked by two pyridine halogen-bond acceptors twisted with respect to the central halogen-bond donor at angles ranging from 76 to 86°. The I...N halogen-bond separations are all short, ranging from 73.3 to 76.7% of the sum of the van der Waals radii, while the C-I...N bond angles are essentially linear. The Br...N halogen-bond separation in the cocrystal formed with 1-bromo-4-iodo-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene is 80.4% of the sum of the van der Waals radii. Subtle differences in the crystal packings are attributed to the role of secondary C-H...π and weak π-type interactions with chloro and bromo substituents. The cocrystals 2C7H10N2·C6Cl4I2 and 2C7H10N2·C6Br4I2 are isomorphous.

Abstract:A cocrystal of 2,3,5,6-tetramethylpyrazine and 1,3,4,5-tetrabromo-2,6-difluorobenzene has been prepared and its crystal structure has been determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Infinite chains of roughly coplanar donor and acceptor molecules are held together by two crystallographically distinct and highly linear Br···N halogen bonds. Four further crystallographically distinct Br···Br halogen bonds are also observed. Each of the two Br atoms in the 3 and 5 positions on the benzene ring acts simultaneously as a halogen bond donor and acceptor to two additional bromines on two neighbouring 1,3,4,5-tetrabromo-2,6-difluorobenzene molecules. These halogen bonds are also classified as type II halogen-halogen contacts. As a result of these contacts, a staggered herringbone arrangement of the infinite chains results. These structural features are shown to be consistent with computed molecular electrostatic potential and Hirshfeld surfaces. The insights gained through this analysis imply that additional systematic variations in the substitution motifs of aromatic halogen bond donors may lead to new structures and properties. As part of this work, a single-crystal X-ray structure of 1,3,4,5-tetrabromo-2,6-difluorobenzene of moderate quality is also reported.

Abstract:Halogen bonding (XB) is of great importance in fabricating a two-dimensional (2D) self-assembly for its adaptive directionality. However, the XBs involving fluorine (F) have barely been studied due to the absence of an σ-hole on F. Here, 2D self-assemblies of a F-substituted 4,7-bis(5-bromo-4-dodecylthiophen-2-yl)-5,6-difluorobenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BTZ-BrF) molecule on graphite were investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. STM experiments revealed that the 2D patterns of BTZ-BrF had a clear solvent and concentration dependence, showing a frame-like pattern in aliphatic acid and aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents at high concentrations. At lower concentrations, a bamboo-like and a wave-like pattern were observed in aliphatic acid, whereas small frame-like and large ladder-like domains at high solution concentrations in aliphatic hydrocarbon were observed. As the concentration further decreased, two linear patterns were observed. DFT calculations suggested that the hetero-XBs of F···Br, F···S, Br···S, and Br···N, the homo-XBs of type-II Br···Br, and the S···S interactions synergistically directed and stabilized the polymorphic 2D architectures. This understanding of intermolecular XBs during the molecular assembly at the molecular level may shed light on the ongoing efforts of regulating nanostructures of multifunctional organics.

Abstract:Trans-5,10-bis(1-bromodifluoroacetyl-1-ethoxycarbonyl-methylidene)thianthrene (1b) was prepared from the reaction of BrCF2COC(N-2)CO2Et with thianthrene. X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis showed that the intermolecular halogen bonding and hydrogen bonding coexisted in this compound. The bromine atom acted as an electron acceptor in the halogen bond and an electron donor in the hydrogen bond. It is the first example that the bromine atom acted as such a dual role in the hydrogen and halogen bond.

Abstract:Tetrathiafulvalene derivatives (TTF1-TTF9) bearing fluorinated phenyl groups attached through the sulfur bridges have been synthesized by employing a copper-mediated C-S coupling reaction of C6H5-xFxI (x=1, 2, 5) and a zinc-thiolate complex, (TBA)(2)[Zn(DMIT)(2)] (TBA=tetrabutyl ammonium, DMIT=1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate), as the key step. Particularly, the selective synthesis of C6F5-substituted (TTF8) and C6F4-fused (TTF9) TTFs from C6F5I is disclosed. The physicochemical properties and crystal structures of these TTFs are fully investigated by UV/Vis absorption spectra, cyclic voltammetry, molecular orbital calculation, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The exchange of hydrogen versus fluorine on the peripheral phenyl groups show a notable influence on both the electronic and crystallographic natures of the resulting TTFs: 1) lowering both the HOMO and the LUMO energy levels, 2) modulating the electrochemical properties by regioselective and/or the degree of fluorination, 3) enhancing the driving forces of stacking by multiple fluorine interactions (F...S, C-F...pi/pi(F), C-F...F-C, and C-F...H). This work indicates that the decoration with fluorinated phenyls holds promise to produce functional TTFs with novel electronic and aggregation features.

Abstract:A cocrystallization strategy is used through incorporation of 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) as an acceptor with halogen-substituent thioxanthone (TX) derivatives as donors. The resulting cocrystals TT-R (R = H, F, Cl, Br, or I) transform the thermally activated delayed fluorescence emission in the TT-H, TT-F, and TT-Cl cocrystals to room-temperature phosphorescence in the TT-Br and TT-I cocrystals. Definite crystal packing structures demonstrate a 1:1 alternative donor-acceptor stacking in the TT-H cocrystal, a 2:1 alternative donor-acceptor stacking in the TT-F and TT-Cl cocrystals, and a separate stacking of donor and acceptor in the TT-Br and TT-I cocrystals. A transformation law can be revealed that with an increase in atomic number from H, F, Cl, Br, to I, the cocrystals show the structural transformation of the number of aggregated TX-R molecules from monomers to dimers and finally to multimers. This work will facilitate an understanding of the effect of halogen substituents on the crystal packing structure and luminescence properties in the cocrystals.

Abstract:X-ray analysis has revealed that N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-ethylenediamine 1 form donor–acceptor complex 3 with 1-bromo-2-iodo-tetrafluoroethane 2 , in which the N X (X = Br, I) distances are longer than the average covalent bond length between X and N, but are also definitively shorter than the sum of the corresponding van der Waals radii of X and N, thus that indicating weak interactions between the nitrogen and bromine or iodine atoms. In our experimental section, a valuable method for recrystallization and collect X-ray data from crystals that easily exhibit decay and can be cracked is reported.

Abstract:By using carbon disulfide,N,N-dimethylformamide as raw material,tributylphosphite as coupling agent, 2,3,6,7-tetrakis(2′-cyanoethylthio)tetrathiafulvalene tetrathiolate(TTFTT) was synthesized.Using TTFTT as bridging ligand,o-phenanthroline as capping compound,tetrathiafulvalene tetrathiolate bimetal complexes were synthesized.The products including some intermediates were characterized by IR and elemental analysis.Experimental data of target product tallied with calculated values,indicating that this route of synthesis was reasonable and feasible.

Abstract:Based on the prior observation of the trifluoroacetate hypoiodite, CF3C(O)OI, demonstrating the largest σ‐hole of a neutral halogen bond donor, a series of mono‐ and bis‐carbonyl hypoiodites utilising trifluoromethyl or fluorine substituents at various positions of a parent benzoyl skeleton have been synthesised. The carbonyl hypoiodite complexes were prepared via cation exchange of the silver(I) cations with iodine(I) from the respective silver(I) carboxylates and dicarboxylates as the synthetic precursors. A range of pyridinic Lewis bases of varying nucleophilicities were used to stabilise the carbonyl hypoiodites to further probe their properties. The silver(I) intermediates with these Lewis bases were also isolated for silver(I) pentafluorobenzoate, providing additional insight into the cation exchange reaction. All complexes were characterised both in solution (1H, 1H‐15N HMBC, 19F) and in the solid state (SCXRD), permitting insights into the formation of the elusive pyridine‐iodine(I) cation.

Halogen Cation Transfer in Halogen Bonding Catalysis

Abstract:The potential of fluorine to participate in halogen bonding (XB) has remained a subject of ongoing debate. The discovery of N-fluoropyridinium triflate as a unique "F-cation organocatalyst" for aziridine synthesis is considered to be the first reported example of F-halogen bonding catalysis. Nevertheless, the mechanistic details of this reaction have remained elusive, and compelling evidence supporting the F-halogen bond catalysis has been lacking. In this study, we present an in-depth computational investigation of the mechanism of this reaction to gain insight into the intriguing role of the F-cation organocatalyst. Our results, however, are inconsistent with the previous prevalent F-halogen bonding catalysis mechanism but instead, bring to light a new fluorine cation transfer mechanism. Control experiments provide further support for this alternative mechanism. Moreover, preliminary results suggest that other reactions traditionally attributed to ‘classic’ halogen bonding catalysis might also involve a halogen cation transfer process. These mechanistic insights have important far reaching implications for the rational design of halogen bonding catalytic systems.

Abstract:In this paper, two types of solid phase 2D and 3D XBOFs were selectively constructed from identical building blocks of tetraphenylmethane tetrapyridine derivative and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene by changing the crystallization solvent. This 3D XBOF is a novel hybrid supramolecular organic framework with the synergistic control of hydrogen and halogen bonds. Two types of 2D and 3D XBOFs were selectively constructed from identical building blocks by changing the crystallization solvent.
Isothiocyanate Sulfur Atom as an Acceptor Site for Halogen-Bonded Cocrystallization of Werner Ni(II) Coordination Compounds and Perfluorinated Iodobenzenes

Abstract:We explore the halogen bond acceptor potential of the isothiocyanate sulfur atom in the synthesis of cocrystals involving metal-organic building blocks by using Werner Ni(II) coordination compounds whose pendant isothiocyanate group enables halogen bonding. A series of 14 cocrystals involving octahedral Ni(L)4(NCS)2 coordination compounds (L = pyridine or 4-methylpyridine) has been prepared by both crystallization from solution and liquid-assisted grinding. The effectiveness of this strategy is demonstrated by the assembly of a large family of cocrystals involving five perfluorinated iodobenzenes. For both coordination compounds, we generally obtained one cocrystal with each donor; in one case, we obtained an additional two stoichiomorphs, and in another, we obtained three additional solvates. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments revealed that building units in all cocrystals are connected via S···I halogen bonds involving the donor iodine atom and the isothiocyanate sulfur atom, which is an acceptor of two and, in some cases, even three halogen bonds. Consequently, both coordination compounds act as multitopic acceptors that can form multiple halogen bonds leading to the formation of one-, two-, and three-dimensional halogen-bonded architectures. The relative shortenings of S···I distances are from 7 to 15%, while the S···I-C angles are in the range from 160 to 180°.

Abstract:This review summarizes studies on halogen bonding of fluorine-containing alkyl and aryl iodides in China. From 1987 to 1993, Chen et al. found that there existed donor-acceptor interaction between fluorinated organic (di)iodides, as Lewis acids, and organic Lewis bases such as amines and ethers, which represented early important advances for the research on the non-covalent force currently called as halogen bonding. From 2001 to now, several groups have used halogen bonding as driving force to conduct researches on crystal engineering. In this catogery, Zhu et al. investigated the one-dimensional self-assembly between perfluoro-alpha, pi-diioodalkanes and amines, ethers, and hexamethylphosphamide. Jin et al. studied the complexation between fluorinated aryl iodides and various N-heterocycles, whereas Zhang and Li et al. constructed supramolecular double and quadruple helices from one or two molecular components. Jin et al. conducted extensive studies on C-I center dot center dot center dot pi halogen bonding and its applications in crystal engineering. Wang and Wan et al. utilized halogen bonding to induce trianglular aromatic molecules to co-assemble into two-dimensional honeycomb arrays on surface, whereas Wang et al. utilized halogen bond to induce mono-layer and layer-by-layer self-assembly of two polymers or organic molecules. Zhao and Li et al. developed the applications of halogen bonding in solution-phase multi-site molecular recognition of foldamer receptors for ICF2-incorporated tri-armed guests. Hu, Gong, Liao et al. utilized halogen bonding to improve the material properties of a variety of organic aromatic molecules. Several groups have also used halogen bonding to increase the selectivity of a number of organic reactions. Representative examples are described, which highlight the utility of halogen bonding.
The Changing Phases of Bromopentafluorobenzene

Abstract:As part of a much larger study on non‐covalent interactions in binary adducts, we have explored the solid‐state structures of bromopentafluorobenzene (C6F5Br) using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), variable‐temperature powder X‐ray diffraction (VT‐PXRD), and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SXD). DSC data initially indicated a single solid‐state phase below the freezing point, but revealed additional weak transitions upon heating. The crystal structures of three solid‐state phases have been solved. The SXD data showed that phases I and IV are centrosymmetric, whilst phase II is polar. However, the structure of phase III remains elusive due to the changing phase behaviour of C6F5Br that is determined as much as by kinetics as thermodynamics. The results underline the need for multiple analytical techniques to study non‐covalent interactions and offer valuable data for refining computational models in crystal structure prediction and machine learning. A comparison with the iodinated counterpart is also made.

Abstract:Triangular halogen trimers (RX)(3), where X = Br, I and R represents H, H3C, H2FC, HF2C, F3C, CH2=CH, CH equivalent to C, and Ph, have been investigated using the density functional theory in the Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof method. We report herein the optimized geometries of the stable structures, their vibrational frequencies, and binding energies with the two- and three-body terms. All trimer structures possess a cyclic array of halogen atoms in the type II approach by virtue of the nonspherical atomic charge distribution around the halogens. The (BrBr)-Br-... interactions in trimers are very weak, whereas the (II)-I-... interactions in trimers are relatively stronger. While all bromine trimers and most of iodine trimers are predicted to be noncooperative, three of iodine trimers show weak cooperativity. The analysis of vibration modes reveals that all halogen trimers exhibit no especially remarkable frequency shifts. It is also shown that the electrostatic contribution plays a major role in the halogen(...)halogen interactions in halogen trimers. In contrast to bromine trimers, the relative contribution of charge-transfer component to the halogen(...)halogen interactions becomes more important for iodine trimers.
