Abstract:Supermolecular complexes formed by oligophenyleneethynylene derivatives and isophthalic acid were studied using AM1 method to obtain binding energy. Electronic spectra and IR spectra of the complexes were calculated by INDO/CIS and AM1 methods based on AM1 geometries. Results indicated that the dimer could be formed by the monomers via hydrogen bonding because of the negative binding energy. Binding energy of the complexes was affected by electronegativity and steric effects of the substituents. The first UV absorptions and IR frequencies of N-H bonds of the complexes were both red-shifted compared with those of the monomers. The complexes could bind small molecules via hydrogen bonds, resulting in the change in UV absorptions and an increase in IR frequencies of N-H bonds.

Abstract:Abstract Halogen bonding is emerging as a significant driving force for supramolecular self-assembly and has aroused great interest during the last two decades. Among the various halogen-bonding donors, we take notice of the ability of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,4-DITFB) to co-crystallize with diverse halogen-bonding acceptors in the range from neutral Lewis bases (nitrogen-containing compounds, N-oxides, chalcogenides, aromatic hydrocarbons and organometallic complexes) to anions (halide ions, thio/selenocyanate ions and tetrahedral oxyanions), leading to a great variety of supramolecular architectures such as discrete assemblies, 1D infinite chains and 2D/3D networks. Some of them act as promising functional materials (e.g. fluorescence, phosphorescence, optical waveguide, laser, non-linear optics, dielectric and magnetism) and soft materials (e.g. liquid crystal and supramolecular gel). Here we focus on the supramolecular structures of multicomponent complexes and their related physicochemical properties, highlight representative examples and show clearly the main directions that remain to be developed and improved in this area. From the point of view of crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry, the complexes summarized here should give helpful information for further design and investigation of the elusive category of halogen-bonding supramolecular functional materials.

Abstract:Trans-5,10-bis(1-bromodifluoroacetyl-1-ethoxycarbonyl-methylidene)thianthrene (1b) was prepared from the reaction of BrCF2COC(N-2)CO2Et with thianthrene. X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis showed that the intermolecular halogen bonding and hydrogen bonding coexisted in this compound. The bromine atom acted as an electron acceptor in the halogen bond and an electron donor in the hydrogen bond. It is the first example that the bromine atom acted as such a dual role in the hydrogen and halogen bond.

Abstract:1,4-Di(bromomethyl)-2,5-diiodobenzene ( 1 ), 2,5-diiodo-1,4-di(hydroxymethyl)benzene diacetate ( 2 ), and 1,1'-[(2,5-diiodo-1,4-phenylene)bis(methylene)]dipyridinium diiodide ( 3 ) were synthesized, and their crystallographic data are reported. All three crystal structures are characterized by the stacked packing of the planar molecules and the presence of halogen bonds I⋅⋅⋅Br, I⋅⋅⋅O, and I⋅⋅⋅I, respectively. The largest number of halogen bonds was found in compound 1 , in which there are two I⋅⋅⋅Br bonds per halogen atom. Compounds 2 and 3 contain one halogen bond per halogen atom; however, these bonds are significantly shorter than those in compound 1 . All crystals were studied by IR spectroscopy and simultaneous thermal analysis. Compound 1 , which has no ionic or hydrogen bonds, melts at a higher temperature compared to ionic compound 3 (218 and 200°С, respectively) due to the presence of a larger number of intermolecular halogen bonds. Compound 2 melts at a lower temperature (151°С), which is characteristic of esters.

Abstract:Six intramolecular hydrogen bonding-induced aromatic amide foldamers have been prepared through the formation of the hydrazone bond in the last step. The compounds are attached with one trifluoroiodobenzene as halogen donor and one pyridine ring as halogen bonding acceptor. Intermolecular I center dot center dot center dot N halogen bond formed by the above two units and other kinds of halogen bonds are designed to modulate the stacking of the compounds in the solid state. It is revealed that intermolecular halogen bonding can induce the molecules to form extended zigzag arrays, dimeric macrocycles or supramolecular helices. The formation of the dimeric macrocycles is favored when the halogen bond donor and acceptor are located in a parallel manner. Longer tetrameric and pentameric sequences give rise to more curved, crescent conformations, with the two halogen bonding donor and acceptor on the ends to form a large angle. For two compounds, polar methanol or water prevents the formation of the intermolecular end-to-end halogen bonding by forming I center dot center dot center dot O halogen bonding. The pentameric compound is connected by methanol to form supramolecular single helices. For another pentameric compound, strong I center dot center dot center dot O=C halogen bonding is found to induce the backbone to self-assemble into supramolecular single helices. The single helices further stack to afford supramolecular double helix arrays.

Abstract:X-ray analysis has revealed that N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-ethylenediamine 1 form donor–acceptor complex 3 with 1-bromo-2-iodo-tetrafluoroethane 2 , in which the N X (X = Br, I) distances are longer than the average covalent bond length between X and N, but are also definitively shorter than the sum of the corresponding van der Waals radii of X and N, thus that indicating weak interactions between the nitrogen and bromine or iodine atoms. In our experimental section, a valuable method for recrystallization and collect X-ray data from crystals that easily exhibit decay and can be cracked is reported.

Abstract:The intramolecular six-membered C-H center dot center dot center dot X (X=F, Cl, Br) hydrogen bonding motif of halogen-substituted 1,4-diphenyl-1,2,3-triazole compounds has been assessed. Twelve triazole derivatives have been designed and prepared, which bear fluorine, chlorine or bromine atoms on the ortho- and/or para-positions of the benzene rings. H-1 NMR, X-ray crystallography, and DFT calculation investigations revealed that the ortho-fluorine, chlorine, and bromine atoms of the benzene ring on the C-4 of the triazole unit all can form six-membered C-H center dot center dot center dot X hydrogen bonding. Abstract:Halogens are among the most electronegative elements, and the variations in size and polarizability of halogens require different descriptions of the intermolecular bonds they form. Here we use the inelastic tunneling probe (itProbe) to acquire real-space imaging of intermolecular-bonding structures in the two-dimensional self-assembly of halogenbenzene molecules on a metal surface. Direct visualization is obtained for the intermolecular attraction and the "windmill" pattern of bonding among the fully halogenated molecules. Our results provide a hitherto missing understanding of the nature of the halogen bond.

Abstract:A series of cocrystals of halogen bond donors 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (p-F4DIB) and tetraiodoethylene (TIE) with five aromatic heterocyclic diazine mono-N-oxides based on pyrazine, tetramethylpyrazine, quinoxaline, phenazine, and pyrimidine as halogen bonding acceptors were studied. Structural analysis of the mono-N-oxides allows comparison of the competitive occurrence of N···I vs O···I interactions and the relative strength and directionality of these two types of interactions. Of the aromatic heterocyclic diazine mono-N-oxide organoiodine cocrystals examined, six exhibited 1:1 stoichiometry, forming chains that utilized both N···I and O···I interactions. Two cocrystals presented 1:1 stoichiometry with exclusive O···I interactions. Two cocrystals displayed a 2:1 stoichiometry-one characterized solely by O···I interactions and the other solely by N···I interactions. We have also compared these interactions to those present in the corresponding diazines, some of which we report here and some which have been previously reported. In addition, a computational analysis using density functional theory (M062X/def2-SVPD) was performed on these two systems and has been compared to the experimental results. The calculated complex formation energies were, on average, 4.7 kJ/mol lower for the I···O halogen bonding interaction as compared to the corresponding N···I interaction. The average I···O interaction distances were calculated to be 0.15 Å shorter than the corresponding I···N interactions.

Study on Halogen Bonding of Organofluorine Compounds in China

Abstract:This review summarizes studies on halogen bonding of fluorine-containing alkyl and aryl iodides in China. From 1987 to 1993, Chen et al. found that there existed donor-acceptor interaction between fluorinated organic (di)iodides, as Lewis acids, and organic Lewis bases such as amines and ethers, which represented early important advances for the research on the non-covalent force currently called as halogen bonding. From 2001 to now, several groups have used halogen bonding as driving force to conduct researches on crystal engineering. In this catogery, Zhu et al. investigated the one-dimensional self-assembly between perfluoro-alpha, pi-diioodalkanes and amines, ethers, and hexamethylphosphamide. Jin et al. studied the complexation between fluorinated aryl iodides and various N-heterocycles, whereas Zhang and Li et al. constructed supramolecular double and quadruple helices from one or two molecular components. Jin et al. conducted extensive studies on C-I center dot center dot center dot pi halogen bonding and its applications in crystal engineering. Wang and Wan et al. utilized halogen bonding to induce trianglular aromatic molecules to co-assemble into two-dimensional honeycomb arrays on surface, whereas Wang et al. utilized halogen bond to induce mono-layer and layer-by-layer self-assembly of two polymers or organic molecules. Zhao and Li et al. developed the applications of halogen bonding in solution-phase multi-site molecular recognition of foldamer receptors for ICF2-incorporated tri-armed guests. Hu, Gong, Liao et al. utilized halogen bonding to improve the material properties of a variety of organic aromatic molecules. Several groups have also used halogen bonding to increase the selectivity of a number of organic reactions. Representative examples are described, which highlight the utility of halogen bonding.

Abstract:At room temperature, a mixture of 1,1,3,3-tetraoxa-2,2-dibromo-4,4,5,5,6,6-hexafluoro-1,3-dithiacyclohexane 2) and excess pyrazine and hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA) in dichloromethane gave two unexpected products. The first product was the cocrystal (6), in which two bromide ions bridged two molecules of 2 via four C−Br···Br halogen bonds. The second product was the zwitterion which formed a 1:1 cocrystal with HMPA, (5), via a strong N−H···O hydrogen bond. Both products have been fully characterized by spectroscopic methods and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The reaction mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:The inclusion of water in organic crystals is more frequent compared to other solvents, given its smaller size and excellent ability of hydrogen bonding with organic molecules. This work addresses reversible water absorption and desorption by halogen-substituted 1,4-bis(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzene (Cl-BDPI and Br-BDPI) in its as-synthesized crystalline forms. The as-synthesized hexahydrates of these molecules were found to convert to di- or monohydrates upon heating, which can revert back to hexahydrates upon exposure to water vapors. Further heating of these di- or monohydrates resulted in amorphous anhydrates, which cannot be revived to the crystalline hydrates. The reversible transformations between the hydrates were further characterized by variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction (VT-PXRD), variable-temperature Fourier transform infrared (VT-FTIR) spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The analyses of the crystal structures of the hydrates reveal that the water molecules in hexahydrates bind to the X-BDPI via hydrogen bonds, which can be released upon heating in favor of the formation of bifurcated halogen bonding between the X-BDPI molecules.

A Theoretical Study of the Interactions of Iodo-Perfluorocarbon and Iodo-Hydrocarbon with Haloid Anions

Abstract:Ab initio calculations have been performed on a series of complexes formed between iodo-perfluorocarbons(PFCs) and iodo-hydrocarbons(HCs) and haloid anions to gain a deeper insight into the nature of halogen bonds. It appears that halogen bonds in these complexes are much stronger than neutral halogen bonds. Calculations also show that the strength of halogen bonds in iodo-PFC⋯ haloid anion dimers are greater than those in iodo-HC⋯ haloid anion dimers. A comparison of the two complex series reveals that the hybridization state of the carbon atom bonded to iodine has a less pronounced effect on the interatomic distances I⋯X in the iodo-PFC series in relation to the iodo-HC series. PCM calculations used to investigate the solvent effect on halogen bonds unveil that, in the gas phase, fluorine anion prefers to form halogen-bonded complexes with respect to chloride, bromide, and iodine anions; however, the preference is not obvious, and even an opposite order is observed in solutions. It is worth mentioning that the iodo-PFC⋯ fluorine anion complexes present a special structure, i.e. the interatomic I⋯F distances in these complexes are relatively short and the corresponding C–I bonds tend to be further broken. These features, in combination with the geometrical data, indicate that ate-complexes are formed between iodo-PFC and fluorine anions.

Abstract:Ab initio calculations have been performed on a series of complexes formed between halogen-containing molecules and ammonia to gain a deeper insight into the nature of halogen bonding. It appears that the dihalogen molecules form the strongest halogen-bonded complexes with ammonia, followed by HOX; the charge-transfer-type contribution has been demonstrated to dominate the halogen bonding in these complexes. For the complexes involving carbon-bound halogen molecules, our calculations clearly indicate that electrostatic interactions are mainly responsible for their binding energies. Whereas the halogen-bond strength is significantly enhanced by progressive fluorine substitution, the substitution of a hydrogen atom by a methyl group in the CH(3)X...NH(3) complex weakened the halogen bonding. Moreover, remote substituent effects have also been noted in the complexes of halobenzenes with different para substituents. The influence of the hybridization state of the carbon atom bonded to the halogen atom has also been examined and the results reveal that halogen-bond strengths decrease in the order HC triple bond CX > H(2)C=CHX approximately O=CHX approximately C(6)H(5)X > CH(3)X. In addition, several excellent linear correlations have been established between the interaction energies and both the amount of charge transfer and the electrostatic potentials corresponding to an electron density of 0.002 au along the R-X axis; these correlations provide good models with which to evaluate the electron-accepting abilities of the covalently bonded halogen atoms. Finally, some positively charged halogen-bonded systems have been investigated and the effect of the charge has been discussed.

Abstract:The crystal structures of three intramolecularly hydrogen bonded rigid aromatic amide derivatives, which all bear one iodine atom at one end as the donor and one pyridine unit at the other end as the acceptor, have been described to reveal the utility of halogen bonding in inducing the formation of supramolecular macrocycles. All the three compounds formed intermolecular I center dot center dot center dot N halogen bonding. For short compound 1, halogen bonding induced the formation of an extended supramolecular array. For longer folded compounds 2 and 3, halogen bonding could hold two molecules to form supramolecular macrocycles even by adopting a highly distorted, energetically less favorable conformation (for 3). Depending on the solvent for the growth of crystals, compound 3 could also gave rise to a halogen bonded supramolecular double helix. Abstract:Four intramolecularly F center dot center dot center dot H-N hydrogen-bonded aromatic amide and hydrazide derivatives have been prepared. Their crystal structures are investigated and compared with those of their MeO center dot center dot center dot H-N hydrogen-bonded analogues. It is found that all the F center dot center dot center dot H-N hydrogen-bonded molecules form intermolecular CO center dot center dot center dot H-N hydrogen bonding and, for two of them, weak F center dot center dot center dot H-C interactions. In contrast, the MeO center dot center dot center dot H-N hydrogen-bonded molecules display only very weak intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. The hydrogen-bonded amide units in the fluorine-bearing molecules exhibit large torsion from the connecting benzene units. This has been attributed to the weaker ability of fluorine as a hydrogen-bonding acceptor, its smaller size (relative to the MeO group), and consequently the strengthened intermolecular NH center dot center dot center dot OC hydrogen bonding. The results also suggest that, although the weakness of fluorine as a hydrogen-bonding acceptor has been mainly attributed to its low polarizability and tightly contracted lone pairs, the great tendency of fluorine-bearing aromatic amides to form intermolecular CO center dot center dot center dot H-N hydrogen bonding may also play a role.

Abstract:Halogen-bonds, like hydrogen-bonds, are a kind of noncovalent interaction and play an important role in diverse fields including chemistry, biology and crystal engineering. In this work, a comparative study was carried out to examine the halogen/hydrogen-bonding interactions between three fluoro-benzene derivatives and dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO). A number of conclusions were obtained by using attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and ab initio calculations. Electrostatic surface potential, geometry, energy, vibrational frequency, intensity and the natural population analysis (NPA) of the monomers and complexes are studied at the MP2 level of theory with the aug-cc-pVDZ basis set. First, the interaction strength decreases in the order C6F5H-DMSO similar to ClC6F4H-DMSO > C6F5Cl-DMSO, implying that the hydrogen-bond is stronger than the halogen-bond in the systems and, when interacting with ClC6F4H, DMSO favors the formation of a hydrogen-bond rather than a halogen-bond. Second, attractive energy dependences on 1/r(3.3) and 1/r(3.1) were established for the hydrogen-bond and halogen-bond, respectively. Third, upon the formation of a hydrogen-bond and halogen-bond, there is charge transfer from DMSO to the hydrogen-bond and halogen-bond donor. The back-group CH3 was found to contribute positively to the stabilization of the complexes. Fourth, an isosbestic point was detected in the nu(C-Cl) absorption band in the C6F5Cl-DMSO-d(6) system, indicating that there exist only two dominating forms of C6F5Cl in binary mixtures; the non-complexed and halogen-bond-complexed forms. The presence of stable complexes in C6F5H-DMSO and ClC6F4H-DMSO systems are evidenced by the appearance of new peaks with fixed positions.
