Abstract:Since graphene was discovered, the biomimetic materials with laminated structure (such as, shellfish) had become one of the research-hot fields. Chitosan comes from shellfish, and was considered as a very promising abundant natural biopolymer. It holds not only outstanding mechanical properties, film-forming technology and low cost, but also has good applications in environmental fields due to its excellent adsorption properties to a broad range of organic pollutants and some heavy metal ions. Preparation of biomimetic materials with laminated structure utilizing chitosan have many advantages, however, to improve functional properties of chitosan based biomimetic materials is still a great challenge. Graphene has various applications, including storage energy devices, hydrogen production with photo-catalysts, and environmental fields because of its high charge mobility and good mechanical properties. However, graphene and its oxide have difficult re-dispersion properties in fabrication of nanocomposite. In this paper, the nanosheets stacking of metal oxide and grapheme oxide with aid of chitosan was carried out. Several characterizations were examined by SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra. Photocatalytic tests were examined by selecting typical organic pollutants. The photoconductivity response of nanocomposite film to visible light and 808 nm laser with low-power were investigated based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film substrate. The results indicated that the organic-inorganic film not only had wide visible light and NIR (near-infrared) responses, but also had good removal ability to organic pollutants. The nanocomposite film also exhibited clearly photo-response to visible light and 808 nm laser. It would be potential good applications in self-cleaning film, nanocoating, et al.

Abstract:Graphene, a two-dimensional crystalline monolayer made of sp(2)-hybridized carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, holds a set of remarkable electronic and physical properties, such as ballistic transport with low resistivity, high chemical stability, and high mechanical strength. By taking advantage of these, in recent years our research group has performed a series of studies for modifying the surfaces of graphene and tuning its properties. These studies can be mainly divided into two categories. First, we opened graphene's band gap to some extent through covalent and/or noncovalent chemical modifications, and installed sensing functions into graphene. In detail, we grafted nitrophenyl group onto graphene through an electrochemical method and methyl group onto graphene by plasma treatment to open its band gap. Also, we assembled lead sulfide or titanium dioxide onto graphene through electron beam evaporation to achieve optical or gas sensing. A rotaxane molecule with a bistable structure was also assembled onto graphene through pi-pi stacking to obtain optical switches with logic capability. On the other hand, we also fabricated graphene-based nanoelectrodes for making a new-generation molecular electronic devices with diverse functionalities. In detail, we cut graphene using electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching to obtain graphene electrodes. Poly(3-hexyl thiophene) or copper phthalocyanine was spin-coated onto these electrodes to achieve field effect transistors with the high carrier mobility and photoresponsive property. We further developed graphene nanoelectrodes by dash-line lithography, and molecular bridges with different functions were connected between these nanoelectrodes. These single molecule devices can switch their conductance upon exposure to external stimuli, such as metal ion, pH and light. Looking into the future, graphene, as a representative of carbon-based nanomaterials, will continue to play an important role in the area of nano/molecular electronics.

Abstract:In this work, hydrophilic and organophilic chemically modified graphene oxide (CMGO) sheets were prepared through a two-step diimide-activated amidation. The hydrophilic and organophilic products were characterized by atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The resulted dispersions are homogeneous and exhibit long-term stability, which will facilitate the combination of CMGO sheets with polymers to yield homogeneous composites.
Facile and Highly Efficient Fabrication of Graphene Oxide-Based Polymer Nanocomposites Through Mussel-Inspired Chemistry and Their Environmental Pollutant Removal Application

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO)-based polymer nanocomposites were fabricated in aqueous solution via a novel strategy combination of mussel-inspired chemistry and Michael addition reaction. These GO-based polymer nanocomposites were used as efficient absorbents for the removal of organic dyes methylene blue (MB) from the aqueous solution. The successful preparation of GO-based polymer nanocomposites (GO-PDA-PSPSH) was confirmed by a number of characterization techniques in detail. Furthermore, a series of influential factors such as contact time, initial solution pH, and temperature were investigated and optimized. The optimal adsorption time of GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites toward MB was 58 min. The maximum adsorption efficiency was occurred at pH 7. On the other hand, accompanying with the elevation of temperature, removal efficiency of GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites was significantly increased, indicating that the adsorption process of MB by GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites was endothermic. More importantly, the adsorption capability of GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites was obviously greater than many other GO-based nanocomposites. Taken together, we have developed a facile biomimetic strategy for the preparation of GO-based polymer nanocomposites, which showed excellent adsorption capability toward MB and are promising for environmental adsorption applications.

Abstract:In our work, graphene oxide (GO) was covalently functionalized with propargyl alcohol to obtain alkyne terminated graphene oxide. These alkyne groups on graphene oxide sheets further reacted with a kind of azido-functionalized liquid crystalline polymer via click chemistry, which was found to be a facile and effective method to graft the liquid crystalline polymer onto GO sheets. The liquid crystalline polymer introduced here was a side-chain liquid crystalline polymer – poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PMPCS). Azido-functionalized PMPCS was prepared beforehand by atom transfer polymerization to obtain polymers with designed molecular weight. The successful introduction of functional PMPCS chains onto GO sheets was confirmed by FTIR, TEM and AFM characterizations. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to calculate the graft efficiency. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies revealed that functional PMPCS had more profound π–π stacking interactions and charge transfer effect with GO sheets after liquid crystalline phase transition. Therefore, the as-prepared GO–PMPCS composite had potential applications in improving the mechanical properties of liquid crystalline PMPCS matrix as had been investigated by rheological measurements.

Abstract:Biomimetic fabrication has long been considered a short cut to the rational design and production of artificial materials or devices that possess fascinating properties, just like natural creatures. Considering the fact that graphene exhibits a lot of exceptional properties in a wide range of scientific fields, biomimetic fabrication of graphene multiscale structures, denoted as biomimetic graphene, is of great interest in both fundamental research and industrial applications. Especially, the combination of graphene with biomimetic structures would realize structural and functional integrity, and thus bring a new opportunity of developing novel graphene-based devices with remarkable performance. In this feature article, we highlight the recent advances in biomimetic graphene films and their structure-defined properties. Functionalized graphene films with multiscale structures inspired from a wide range of biomaterials including rose petals, butterfly wings, nacre and honeycomb have been collected and presented. Moreover, both current challenges and future perspectives of biomimetic graphene are discussed. Although research of the so-called "biomimetic graphene" is still at an early stage, it might become a "hot topic" in the near future.

Abstract:Carbon fibers with excellent performances suffer from their low surface activity in many applications. Modifying fiber surfaces can improve the properties of fiber–matrix interface, which can expand the usage of carbon fiber in the field of energy. However, there are two main problems in the most traditional researches: the damaged structure of fiber by pretreatment to build the active site, and the weak interaction between fiber and nanoparticles by deposition. Herein, we first report the bioinspired copolymerization of dopamine and poly(amidoamine) on the fiber surface using polydopamine (the versatile adhesives) as an efficient and robust platform to graft poly(amidoamine) onto fiber surface at room temperature. Abstract:In this work, a novel and facile method for covalent attachment of biomaterials to graphene oxide sheets (GUS) was developed. Four conjugates were obtained via the diimide-activated amidation reaction under ambient conditions. Final products were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Electrochemical characterization of the composite showed that the covalently bonded biomaterial retained its bioactivity. Abstract:Herein, we have developed a rather simple composite fabrication approach to achieving molecular-level dispersion and planar orientation of chemically modified graphene (CMG) in the thermosetting polyimide (PI) matrix as well as realizing strong adhesion at the interfacial regions between reinforcing filler and matrix. The covalent adhesion of CMG to PI matrix and oriented distribution of CMG were carefully confirmed and analyzed by detailed investigations. Combination of covalent bonding and oriented distribution could enlarge the effectiveness of CMG in the matrix. Efficient stress transfer was found at the CMG/PI interfaces. Significant improvements in the mechanical performances, thermal stability, electrical conductivity, and hydrophobic behavior were achieved by addition of only a small amount of CMG. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the hydrophilic-to-hydrophobic transition and the electrical percolation were observed at only 0.2 wt % CMG in this composite system. This facile methodology is believed to afford broad application potential in graphene-based polymer nanocomposites, especially other types of high-performance thermosetting systems.

Abstract:Inspired by the biomineralization process, a shapeable, multi-manipulatable, and recyclable gel-like graphene oxide macroscopic assembly is prepared by Takeshi Serizawa, Hongwei Zhu, and co-workers in article number 1803004. This assembly is stretchable, malleable, self-healable, and easy to process in the wet state, but tough and rigid in the dried state. These two states can be readily switched by adjusting the water content, which shows the advantage of recyclability and it can be used for 3D printing to form varied architectures.
Preparation and Characterisation of Covalent Polymer Functionalized Graphene Oxide

Abstract:A covalently bonded polyethylene grafted graphene oxide hybrid material was fabricated successfully. Gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was firstly coated onto the graphene oxide sheets, and then maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MA-g-PE) was grafted onto the APTES coated graphene oxide sheets, which were confirmed by means of Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. Functionalization resulted in 96 wt% polymer grafting efficiency, and a 10 °C increase in the crystallisation temperature, compared with that of the pure MA-g-PE. An encapsulating structure of the functionalised graphene oxide sheets was observed by means of TEM. For the potential application of the functionalised graphene oxide, PE/functionalised graphene oxide nanocomposites as an example was assessed in this paper. Initial results showed that Young's modulus, yielding strength and tensile strength of PE can be improved by incorporation of the PE-graft-graphene oxide at very low loadings. This protocol could broad the potential application of graphene in the development of non-polar polymer/graphene nanocomposites.

Abstract:This work describes, a quick and easy single‐step biofunctionalization method for dispersing graphene in aqueous media using an enzymatic conjugation approach to covalently incorporate short aromatic/charged tripeptides giving rise to homogenous graphene functionalization. The resulting stable graphene dispersions hold significant promise for enhancing biocompatibility for diverse biological applications. Graphene, a 2D carbon material, possesses extraordinary mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, making it highly attractive for various biological applications such as biosensing, biotherapeutics, and tissue engineering. However, the tendency of graphene sheets to aggregate and restack hinders its dispersion in water, limiting these applications. Peptides, with their defined amino acid sequences and versatile functionalities, are compelling molecules with which to modify graphene—aromatic amino acids can strengthen interactions through π‐stacking and charged groups can be chosen to make the sheets dispersible and stable in water. Here, a facile and green method for covalently functionalizing and dispersing graphene using amphiphilic tripeptides, facilitated by a tyrosine phenol side chain, through an aqueous enzymatic oxidation process is demonstrated. The presence of a second aromatic side chain group enhances this interaction through non‐covalent support via π–π stacking with the graphene surface. Futhermore, the addition of charged moieties originating from either ionizable amino acids or terminal groups facilitates profound interactions with water, resulting in the dispersion of the newly functionalized graphene in aqueous solutions. This biofunctionalization method resulted in ≈56% peptide loading on the graphene surface, leading to graphene dispersions that remain stable for months in aqueous solutions outperforming currently used surfactants.

Abstract:Two-dimensional grapheme offers interesting electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties that are currently being explored for advanced electronics, membranes, and composites. Here we synthesize and explore the biological applications of grapheme oxide. The functionalization chemistry was developed to impart solubility and compatibility of grapheme oxide in biological environments. We found that the global myoglobin (Mb) – grapheme oxide hybrids (Mb-GO) could be successfully prepared by chemical deposition via carboxylic acid modified graphite oxide (GO-COOH) as the intermediate under mild conditions. The functioned grapheme oxide was characterized by many techniques including UV-Vis, FT-IR, Raman, SEM, and TEM. The results indicated that the hydroxyl groups and epoxide groups could be converted to carboxylic acid moieties under strongly basic conditions, and the carboxylic acid modified graphite oxide had increased water solubility and more carboxylic acid groups available for subsequent enzyme immobilization by covalent binding. The average amount of carboxylic acid groups in GO-COOH were determined to be 1.243 mmol in 100 mg GO-COOH by acid-base titration. And the average mole percentage of the carboxylic acid groups on GO-COOH was about 14.9%. The funcitionalization of GO with carboxylic acid groups provided basis for constructing various function materials, including biosensors, enzyme reactors, cellular imaging, and drug delivery.

Abstract:A novel strategy for surface modification of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) derived pH- and thermo-responsive polymers was developed via a combination of mussel inspired chemistry and a Michael addition reaction. In this procedure, pristine MWCNTs were first coated with polydopamine through self polymerization of dopamine under alkine solution, and then RAFT derived stimuli-responsive polymers were further grafted onto PDA modified MWCNTs via a Michael addition reaction. The successful modification of MWCNTs was confirmed by a series of characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry. These polymer modified CNTs showed enhanced dispersibility in various solutions and pH-/temperature-responsive properties. Due to the strong adhesion of polydopamine to various materials surface, the method described in this work could also be extended to the surface modification of other nanomaterials.
Amino‐functionalization of Graphene Sheets and the Fabrication of Their Nanocomposites

Abstract:Expandable graphite oxide (EGO) was functionalized with different amine groups after sequential steps as thermal expansion, oxidation, acylation, and amidation. Three types of amino-functionalized graphenes (a-Gphs) were prepared by exfoliating amino functionalized EGOs(a-EGO) through controlled ultrasonication. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elementary analysis, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis separately confirmed the chemical structure of a-EGO. The effect of ultrasonic power on the particle sizes of exfoliated a-EGOs was estimated by dynamic light scattering. Single layered graphene (0.43 nm) was achieved after ultrasonicating at 500 W for 20 min, which was affirmed by the results of atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Ultra violet-visible spectroscopy also indicates the good dispersion properties of a-Gphs in these solvents. Abstract:Covalently crosslinked graphene oxide papers (GOPs) with enhanced mechanical properties are prepared by a strategy involving crosslinking by means of intercalated polymers. The strength and modulus of the crosslinked GOPs increase by 115% and 550%, respectively, compared to the pristine GOPs. These results broaden the potential applications of graphene, and the crosslinking strategy will open the door to the assembly of other nanometer-scale materials.

Abstract:Graphene's unique thermal, electric and mechanical properties originate from its structure, including being single-atom thick, two-dimensional and extensively conjugated. These structural elements endow graphene with advantageous thermal, electric and mechanical properties. However, the application of graphene is challenged by issues of production, storage and processing. Therefore, the stabilization and modification of graphene have attracted extensive interest. In this review we summarize the strategies for chemical modification of graphene, the influence of modification and the applications in various areas. Generally speaking, chemical modification can be achieved via either covalent or non-covalent interactions. Covalent modifications often destroy some of the graphene conjugation system, resulting in compromising some of its properties. Therefore, in this review we focus mainly on the non-covalent modification methodologies, e.g. π–π stacking interactions and van der Waals force, because the non-covalent modifications are believed to preserve the natural structure and properties. We also discuss the challenges associated with the production, processing and performance enhancement.
