Abstract:Since graphene was discovered, the biomimetic materials with laminated structure (such as, shellfish) had become one of the research-hot fields. Chitosan comes from shellfish, and was considered as a very promising abundant natural biopolymer. It holds not only outstanding mechanical properties, film-forming technology and low cost, but also has good applications in environmental fields due to its excellent adsorption properties to a broad range of organic pollutants and some heavy metal ions. Preparation of biomimetic materials with laminated structure utilizing chitosan have many advantages, however, to improve functional properties of chitosan based biomimetic materials is still a great challenge. Graphene has various applications, including storage energy devices, hydrogen production with photo-catalysts, and environmental fields because of its high charge mobility and good mechanical properties. However, graphene and its oxide have difficult re-dispersion properties in fabrication of nanocomposite. In this paper, the nanosheets stacking of metal oxide and grapheme oxide with aid of chitosan was carried out. Several characterizations were examined by SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra. Photocatalytic tests were examined by selecting typical organic pollutants. The photoconductivity response of nanocomposite film to visible light and 808 nm laser with low-power were investigated based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film substrate. The results indicated that the organic-inorganic film not only had wide visible light and NIR (near-infrared) responses, but also had good removal ability to organic pollutants. The nanocomposite film also exhibited clearly photo-response to visible light and 808 nm laser. It would be potential good applications in self-cleaning film, nanocoating, et al.
Fast Phase Transfer of Graphene Oxide from Water to Triglycidyl Para-Aminophenol for Epoxy Composites with Superior Nanosheet Dispersion

Abstract:Currently the incorporation of graphene within polymer matrices requires complicated, energy-intensive, and time-consuming sample preparation steps. We report that the self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO) with triglycidyl para-aminophenol (TGPAP), a liquid tertiary amine-type epoxy oligomer, results in the direct and fast phase transfer of GO from water to TGPAP via simple manual stirring under ambient conditions for a very short time. The formation of TGPAP/GO complexes by the partial charge transfer from the carboxylic acid groups of GO to the tertiary amine group of TGPAP was found to be responsible for the fast phase transfer. After the in-situ thermal reduction and curing process, few-layer nanosheets of the reduced GO (rGO) disperse very uniformly in the final epoxy/rGO composites. The mechanical properties of the epoxy/rGO composites and the multiscale reinforced composites with continuous microscale carbon fiber and rGO as the primary and secondary reinforcements, respectively, are remarkably enhanced.

Abstract:An efficient strategy for growing thermo-sensitive polymers from the surface of exfoliated graphene oxide (GO) is reported in this article. GO sheets with hydroxyls and epoxy groups on the surface were first prepared by modified Hummer's method. Epoxy groups on GO sheets can be easily modified through ring-opening reactions, involving nucleophilic attack by tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane (TRIS). The resulting GO-TRIS sheets became a more versatile precursor for next ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ethyl ethylene phosphate (EEP), leading to GO-TRIS/poly(ethyl ethylene phosphate) (GO-TRIS-PEEP) nanocomposite. The nanocomposite was characterized by ¹H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal gravity (DTG), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Since hydrophilic PEEP chains make the composite separate into single layers through hydrogen bonding interaction, the dispersity of the functionalized GO sheets in water is significantly improved. Meanwhile, the aqueous dispersion of GO-TRIS-PEEP nanocomposite shows reversible temperature switching self-assembly and disassembly behavior. Such a smart graphene oxide-based hybrid material is promising for applications in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO)-based polymer nanocomposites were fabricated in aqueous solution via a novel strategy combination of mussel-inspired chemistry and Michael addition reaction. These GO-based polymer nanocomposites were used as efficient absorbents for the removal of organic dyes methylene blue (MB) from the aqueous solution. The successful preparation of GO-based polymer nanocomposites (GO-PDA-PSPSH) was confirmed by a number of characterization techniques in detail. Furthermore, a series of influential factors such as contact time, initial solution pH, and temperature were investigated and optimized. The optimal adsorption time of GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites toward MB was 58 min. The maximum adsorption efficiency was occurred at pH 7. On the other hand, accompanying with the elevation of temperature, removal efficiency of GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites was significantly increased, indicating that the adsorption process of MB by GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites was endothermic. More importantly, the adsorption capability of GO-PDA-PSPSH nanocomposites was obviously greater than many other GO-based nanocomposites. Taken together, we have developed a facile biomimetic strategy for the preparation of GO-based polymer nanocomposites, which showed excellent adsorption capability toward MB and are promising for environmental adsorption applications.

Abstract:In this study, we report a mild and efficient strategy for growing thermosensitive polymers directly from the surface of exfoliated graphene oxide (GO). Exfoliated GO sheets were sequentially subject to the epoxide ring-opening reaction with tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane (TRIS) to increase the amount of reactive sites, the esterification with 2-bromo-2-methylpropionyl bromide to introduce the Br-containing initiating groups, and the surface-initiated single electron transferliving radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) to tune the molecular weights of grafted polymers. All these reactions were performed at ambient temperature without losing any other oxygen-containing functionality on GO. The resulting TRIS-GO-PNIPAM nanocomposites still maintain the separated single layers in dispersion, and the dispersibilities in organic solvents are significantly improved. Meanwhile, the aqueous dispersion of TRIS-GO-PNIPAM shows reversible temperature switching self-assembly and disassembly behavior at about 40 degrees C. Abstract:Graphene/Bi2WO6 composites have been synthesized by hydrothermal reduction at 160 degrees C for 24h using ethanol as the reducing agent. All as-prepared composites were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UVvis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption, and photocatalytic activity evaluation. The effective charge separation of graphene/Bi2WO6 composites was caused by the electrical conduction of graphene which is the most important factor. The results have proved the formation of interfacial contact between graphene nanosheets and Bi2WO6 nanoplates. The adsorptivity for azo dyes was enhanced greatly with the introduction of graphene. The oxy-functional groups located at the edges of graphene were responsible for the enhanced adsorptivity. As-prepared graphene/Bi2WO6 composites exhibited enhanced light absorption from UV to visible-light region. In addition, the introduction of graphene would also result in smaller crystalline size and lower crystallinity of Bi2WO6. Graphene/Bi2WO6 composites containing an appropriate amount of graphene were proved to exhibit higher adsorptivities and photocatalytic activities for azo dyes. High photocatalytic activities of graphene/Bi2WO6 composites were considered to be the synergetic effects of high adsorption, high light absorption, and high electrical conduction induced by the introduction of graphene.

Abstract:Thermosensitive graphene-polymer composites have been prepared by attaching poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) onto the basal plane of graphene sheets via pi-pi stacking. Pyrene-terminated PNIPAAm was synthesized using reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization via a pyrene-functional RAFT agent. Aqueous solutions of the graphene-polymer composites were stable and thermosensitive. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of pyrene-terminated PNIPAAm was measured to be 33 degrees C. When the pyrene-functional polymer was attached to graphene the resultant composites were also thermosensitive in aqueous solutions exhibiting a reversible suspension behavior at 24 degrees C. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis revealed that the thickness Of a graphene-PNIPAAm (M-n: 10,000 and PDI: 1.1) sheet was similar to 5.0 nm. The surface coverage of polymer chains on the graphene basal plane was calculated to be 7.2 x 10 (11) mol cm(-2). The graphene-PNIPAAm composite material was successfully characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Abstract:This work describes, a quick and easy single‐step biofunctionalization method for dispersing graphene in aqueous media using an enzymatic conjugation approach to covalently incorporate short aromatic/charged tripeptides giving rise to homogenous graphene functionalization. The resulting stable graphene dispersions hold significant promise for enhancing biocompatibility for diverse biological applications. Graphene, a 2D carbon material, possesses extraordinary mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, making it highly attractive for various biological applications such as biosensing, biotherapeutics, and tissue engineering. However, the tendency of graphene sheets to aggregate and restack hinders its dispersion in water, limiting these applications. Peptides, with their defined amino acid sequences and versatile functionalities, are compelling molecules with which to modify graphene—aromatic amino acids can strengthen interactions through π‐stacking and charged groups can be chosen to make the sheets dispersible and stable in water. Here, a facile and green method for covalently functionalizing and dispersing graphene using amphiphilic tripeptides, facilitated by a tyrosine phenol side chain, through an aqueous enzymatic oxidation process is demonstrated. The presence of a second aromatic side chain group enhances this interaction through non‐covalent support via π–π stacking with the graphene surface. Futhermore, the addition of charged moieties originating from either ionizable amino acids or terminal groups facilitates profound interactions with water, resulting in the dispersion of the newly functionalized graphene in aqueous solutions. This biofunctionalization method resulted in ≈56% peptide loading on the graphene surface, leading to graphene dispersions that remain stable for months in aqueous solutions outperforming currently used surfactants.

Abstract:Novel MnO2 petal nanosheet and nanorod/graphene composites are successfully fabricated by a facile one-step hydrothermal method through changing the content of the Mn source. The formation mechanism of different morphologies of MnO2/graphene composites have been studied. The structure of the MnO2/graphene is "sandwich"-like, with MnO2 petal nanosheets and nanorods homogeneously anchored on each side of the graphene. Furthermore, the MnO2/graphene composites with different shapes can be used for supercapacitor electrode materials. The experimental results show that the MnO2 petal nanosheet/graphene composite has better capacitance performance than that of the MnO2 nanorod/graphene composite. The MnO2 petal nanosheet/graphene composite shows excellent specific capacitance as high as 516.8 F g(-1) at a scan rate of 1 mV s(-1) in 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte and good long-term cycle stability, indicating its potential application to act as a promising electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors. This study provides a facile and in situ method to prepare metal oxide/graphene composite materials and a novel scaffold to construct other metal oxides with graphene for energy storage.
In situ preparation of functionalized graphene oxide/epoxy nanocomposites with effective reinforcements

Abstract:In order to obtain homogeneous dispersion and strong filler-matrix interface in epoxy resin, graphene oxide was functionalized via surface modification by hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene and glycidol and then incorporated into epoxy resin to obtain nanocomposites via in situ thermal polymerization. The morphology of nanocomposites was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, implying good dispersion of graphene nano-sheets. The incorporation of functionalized graphene oxide effectively enhanced various property performances of epoxy nanocomposites. The storage modulus of the epoxy nanocomposites was significantly increased by 113% (2% addition) and the hardness was improved by 38% (4% addition). Electrical conductivity was improved by 6.5 orders of magnitude. Enhanced thermal stability was also achieved. This work demonstrates a cost-effective approach to construct a flexible interphase structure, strong interfacial interaction and good dispersion of functionalized graphene in epoxy nanocomposites through a local epoxy-rich environment around graphene oxide sheets, which reinforces the polymer properties and indicates further application in research and industrial areas.

Abstract:Introduction: Stimuli-responsive hydrogels, which indicate a significant response to the environmental change (e.g., pH, temperature, light, …), have potential applications for tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, cell therapy, artificial muscles, biosensors, etc. Among the temperature-responsive materials, poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) based hydrogels have been widely developed and their properties can be easily tailored by manipulating the properties of the hydrogel and the composite material. Graphene oxide (GO), as a multifunctional and biocompatible nanosheet, can efficiently improve the mechanical strength and response rate of PNIPAAm-based hydrogels. Here, hydrogel composites (HCs) of PNIPAAm with GO was developed using the modified starch as a biodegradable cross-linker. Methods: Micro/nanohydrogel composites were synthesized by free radical polymerization of NIPAAm in the suspension of different feed ratio of GO using maleate-modified starch (St-MA) as cross-linker and Tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride (THPC) as a strong oxygen scavenger. The HCs were characterized by FT-IR, DSC, TGA, SEM, and DLS. Also, the phase transition, swelling/deswelling behavior, hemocompatibility and biocompatibility of the synthesized HCs were investigated. Results: The thermal stability, phase transition temperature and internal network crosslinking of HCs increases with increasing of the GO feed ratio. Also, the swelling/deswelling, hemolysis, and MTT assays studies confirmed that the HCs are a fast response, hemocompatible and biocompatible materials. Conclusion: The employed facile approach for the synthesis of HCs yields an intelligent material with great potential for biomedical applications.

Abstract:In this work, hydrophilic and organophilic chemically modified graphene oxide (CMGO) sheets were prepared through a two-step diimide-activated amidation. The hydrophilic and organophilic products were characterized by atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The resulted dispersions are homogeneous and exhibit long-term stability, which will facilitate the combination of CMGO sheets with polymers to yield homogeneous composites.

Abstract:Functionalized graphene with reactive moieties is promising to significantly enhance the interfacial strength of graphene materials with thermoset resins and their dispersion in resins. Most of the previous reactive graphene materials were prepared through the covalent modification of oxidation-produced oxygen-containing groups of the graphene oxides, which, however, have intensive defects and weakened mechanical strength, Young's modulus, and thermal stability. Starting from the commercially available graphene, we herewith developed a one-pot direct grafting approach for the fabrication of epoxy-reactive graphene. This grafting is achieved by the diazonium addition reaction of 10-(2′,5′-dihydroxyphenyl)-9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (ODOPB) functionalized 4-aminobenzoic acid with the pristine graphene sheets. We further demonstrated this one-pot grafting approach could be controlled well by simply changing the ODOPB functionalized 4-aminobenzoic acid concentration to fine-tune the grafting density. In the graphene reinforced epoxy composite, ODOPB moieties grafted onto graphenes act as anchors, ensuring the improved dispersion of graphene sheets. The ODOPB functionalized graphene composites demonstrated a dramatically enhanced fracture toughness (a critical-stress-intensity factor, KIC value of 2.1) than graphene-epoxy composites (a KIC value of 1.3) and neat epoxy material (a KIC value of 1.8). Furthermore, its flame retardance, as evaluated by limit oxygen index (LOI) tests, improved by 29.5%. This one-pot approach provides an easily up-scalable and efficient approach for enhancing the interfacial strength and the dispersibility of graphene composites and incorporating new functions into polymer nanocomposites by graphene carriers.

Abstract:Expandable graphite oxide (EGO) was functionalized with different amine groups after sequential steps as thermal expansion, oxidation, acylation, and amidation. Three types of amino-functionalized graphenes (a-Gphs) were prepared by exfoliating amino functionalized EGOs(a-EGO) through controlled ultrasonication. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elementary analysis, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis separately confirmed the chemical structure of a-EGO. The effect of ultrasonic power on the particle sizes of exfoliated a-EGOs was estimated by dynamic light scattering. Single layered graphene (0.43 nm) was achieved after ultrasonicating at 500 W for 20 min, which was affirmed by the results of atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Ultra violet-visible spectroscopy also indicates the good dispersion properties of a-Gphs in these solvents. Green Preparation of Epoxy/Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites Using a Glycidylamine Epoxy Resin as the Surface Modifier and Phase Transfer Agent of Graphene Oxide

Abstract:In studies of epoxy/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites, organic solvents are commonly used to disperse GO, and vigorous mechanical processes and complicated modification of GO are usually required, increasing the cost and hindering the development and application of epoxy nanocomposites. Here, we report a green, facile, and efficient method of preparing epoxy/GO nanocomposites. When triglycidyl para-aminophenol (TGPAP), a commercially available glycidyl amine epoxy resin with one tertiary amine group per molecule, is used as both the surface modifier and phase transfer agent of GO, GO can be directly and rapidly transferred from water to diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and other types of epoxy resins by manual stirring under ambient conditions, whereas GO cannot be transferred to these epoxy resins in the absence of TGPAP. The interaction between TGPAP and GO and the effect of the TGPAP content on the dispersion of GO in the epoxy matrix were investigated systematically. Superior dispersion and exfoliation of GO nanosheets and remarkably improved mechanical properties, including tensile and flexural properties, toughness, storage modulus, and microhardness, of the epoxy/GO nanocomposites with a suitable amount of TGPAP were demonstrated. This method is organic-solvent-free and technically feasible for large-scale preparation of high-performance nanocomposites; it opens up new opportunities for exploiting the unique properties of graphene or even other nanofillers for a wide range of applications.
