Abstract:A strong earthquake could trigger a large number of co-seismic landslides and induce large amount of loose materials on steep slopes and in the gullies. Under strong rainfall conditions, these loose materials could induce devastating debris flows, which will endanger the resettled population and destroy the re-built infrastructures. From 19 to 20 August 2019, fourteen debris flows were triggered by extreme rainstorms near the epicentre of the Wenchuan Earthquake. Among the fourteen incidents, three of them produced debris flow dams, which changed the course of the Minjiang River and resulted in flooding at different parts of the reconstructed Miansi town. In addition, sixteen casualties, twenty two missing persons, and destruction of four main roads were reported. In this paper, one typical catchment, named as “Dengxi gully”, near the epicentre of the Wenchuan earthquake (Sichuan Province, China) was chosen as a case study for remote sensing analysis, field investigation of landslide evolution and debris flow development before and after the catastrophic events. The debris flow in the study area was initiated in four stages: (a) generation of a large amount of loose materials from the Wenchuan Earthquake; (b) run-off erosion from co-seismic landslide material on hilly slopes and repeated mobilizations in steep channels over the years; (c) development of high intensity localised rainfall events; (d) wash out of accumulated materials in gully by the flood. The study of “8.20 debris flows” can provide a benchmark for analysis of long-term evolution of debris flows in order to identify potential continuing hazards in the earthquake-affected areas and make proper engineering decisions.
Earthquake Monitoring and High-Resolution Velocity Tomography for the Central Longmenshan Fault Zone by a Temporary Dense Seismic Array

Abstract:The Longmenshan (LMS) fault zone is located at the junction of the eastern Tibetan Plateau and the Sichuan Basin, and is of great significance for studying regional tectonics and earthquake hazards. Although regional velocity models are available for the LMS fault zone, there lack high-resolution velocity models. Therefore, a dense array of 240 short-period seismometers was deployed around the central segment of the LMS fault zone for about 30 days for monitoring earthquakes and characterizing fine structures of the fault zone. Considering the large quantity of observed seismic data, the data processing workflow consists of deep learning based automatic earthquake detection, phase arrival picking and association. Compared to the earthquake catalog released from China Earthquake Administration, much more earthquakes are detected by the dense array. Double-difference seismic tomography is adopted to determine Vp, Vs and Vp/Vs models as well as earthquake locations. The checkerboard test shows that the velocity models have the spatial resolutions of ~5 km in the horizontal directions and 2 km in the depth. To the west of the Yingxiu-Beichuan fault (YBF), the Precambrian Pengguan complex is characterized by high velocity and low Vp/Vs values, where most of earthquakes occurred. In comparison, to the east of the YBF, the Upper Paleozoic to Jurassic sediments show low velocity and high Vp/Vs values, where few earthquakes occurred. Our results suggest that the earthquake activity in the LMS fault zone is controlled by the strength of rock compositions. Combined high-resolution velocity models with relocated earthquakes, we are also able to delineate fault geometry for different faults of the LMS fault zone.
Spatial Distribution of Large-Scale Landslides Induced by the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:The 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 induced hundreds of large-scale landslides. This paper systematically analyzes 112 large-scale landslides (surface area > 50000 m2), which were identified by interpretation of remote sensing imagery and field investigations. The analysis suggests that the distribution of large-scale landslides is affected by the following four factors: (a) distance effect: 80% of studied large-scale landslides are located within a distance of 5 km from the seismic faults. The farther the distance to the faults, the lower the number of large-scale landslides; (b) locked segment effect: the large-scale landslides are mainly located in five concentration zones closely related with the crossing, staggering and transfer sections between one seismic fault section and the next one, as well as the end of the NE fault section. The zone with the highest concentration was the Hongbai-Chaping segment, where a great number of large-scale landslides including the two largest landslides were located. The second highest concentration of large-scale landslides was observed in the Nanba-Donghekou segment at the end of NE fault, where the Donghekou landslide and the Woqian landslide occurred; (c) Hanging wall effect: about 70% of the large-scale landslides occurred on the hanging wall of the seismic faults; and (d) direction effect: in valleys perpendicular to the seismic faults, the density of large-scale landslides on the slopes facing the seismic wave is obviously higher than that on the slopes dipping in the same direction as the direction of propagation of the seismic wave. Meanwhile, it is found that the sliding and moving directions of large-scale landslides are related to the staggering direction of the faults in each section. In Qingchuan County where the main fault activity was horizontal twisting and staggering, a considerable number of landslides showed the feature of sliding and moving in NE direction which coincides with the staggering direction of the seismic faults.
Preliminary Analysis of Coseismic Landslides Induced by the 1 June 2022 Ms 6.1 Lushan Earthquake, China

Abstract:At 17:00 (UTC+8) on 1 June 2022, an Ms 6.1 reverse earthquake struck Lushan County, Ya’an City, Sichuan Province. This earthquake event had a focal depth of 10 km and the epicenter was located at 30.37° N and 102.94° E. The purpose of this study is to document a comprehensive coseismic landslide inventory for this event and analyze the distribution pattern and factors controlling the landslides. After careful visual interpretations, this quake event was determined to have in total triggered about 2352 landslides in an area of 3900 km2, including both shallow disrupted landslides and collapses, for which the spatial distribution was statistically related to regional topography, geology, and seismicity. Notably, a vast majority of the landslides were located on the NW plate of the seismogenic fault, and were distributed in the area with a seismic intensity of VII. In addition, coseismic landslides were more likely to appear in areas with high altitude, relief, and large slope. The landslide area density (LAD) increased with an increase in the above factors and is explained by an exponential relationship, indicating that the occurrence of coseismic landslides in this area was more easily affected by topographic factors than seismic factors. Most small-scale landslides were clustered in the ridge area, which shows the seismic amplification effects of mountain slopes. Due to the impact of seismic wave propagation direction, hillslopes facing northeast-east (NE-E) were more prone to collapse than southwest-facing ones. Based on the distribution pattern of the landslides, we suggest that the seismogenic fault of this event was NW dipping. These findings indicate that it is effective to identify the dipping of seismogenic faults using the spatial distribution pattern of coseismic landslides.

Abstract:In recent years, a series of earthquakes have occurred in Sichuan province, southwest China. On April 20, 2013, 1013 landslides were triggered in the Lushan earthquake within the research area of 1215.87 km2. On August 8, 2017, 821 landslides were induced in the Jiuzhaigou earthquake within the study area of 541.61 km2. The slope, aspect, elevation, distance to the river, distance to fault, stratum lithology, curvature, and PGA as evaluation factors were chosen to research the distribution characteristics of coseismic landslides. The relationship between influence factors and distribution of coseismic landslides were analyzed using landslide area density (LAD), defined as the ratio between the coseismic landslides area and the total area under the specific classification of eight factors, and landslide number density (LND), interpreted as the number of landslides per square kilometer affected by an earthquake. Both the LAD and LND curves show the common correlations between distribution characteristics of coseismic landslides and the classification of eight factors. The high density of coseismic landslides was found at locations where the valley evolves from U-shaped to V-shaped, along slopes with an inclination between 20 and 50°. Due to the effect of river cutting erosion and human engineering activities, massive coseismic landslides appeared within the scope of 200 m from the river system. Eight hundred sixty small shallow coseismic landslides were found less than 3 km from the seismogenic fault in both earthquakes. Both concave and convex terrain has the same effect of promoting coseismic landslides. The strata of the Carboniferous and Cretaceous are more prone to coseismic landslides occurrence. In the event of another earthquake of similar magnitude in southwest China in the future, the research results can quickly predict the distribution of coseismic landslides and provide a scientific basis for emergency rescue.

Abstract:SUMMARY We deployed a seismic network near the source region of the 2017 Mw 6.5 Jiuzhaigou earthquake to monitor aftershock activity and to investigate the local fault structure. An aftershock deployment of Array of small Arrays (AsA) and a Geometric Mean Envelop (GME) algorithm are adopted to enhance detection performance. We also adopt a set of association, relocation and matched-filter techniques to obtain a detailed regional catalogue. 16 742 events are detected and relocated, including 1279 aftershocks following the Mw 4.8 aftershock. We develop a joint inversion algorithm utilizing locations of event clusters and focal mechanisms to determine the geometry of planar faults. Six segments were finally determined, in which three segments are related to the Huya fault reflecting a change in fault dip direction near the main shock hypocentre, while the other segments reflect branches showing orthogonal and conjugate geometries with the Huya fault. Aftershocks were active on branching faults between the Huya and Minjiang faults indicating that the main shock may have ruptured both major faults. We also resolve a fault portion with ‘weak strength’ near the main shock hypocentre, which is characterized by limited coseismic slips, concentrated afterslip, low aftershock activities, high b-value and high sensitivity to stress changes. These phenomena can be explained by fault frictional properties at conditional stable sliding status, which may be related to the localized high pore-fluid pressure produced by the fluid intrusion.

Abstract:On 20 April 2013, a moment magnitude (Mw) 6.6 earthquake occurred in the Lushan region of southwestern China and caused more than 190 fatalities. In this study, we use geodetic data from nearly 30 continuously operating global positioning system (GPS) stations, two periods of leveling data, and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) observations to image the coseismic deformation of the Lushan earthquake. By using the Helmert variance component estimation method, a joint inversion is performed to estimate source parameters by using these GPS, leveling, and InSAR data sets. The results indicate that the 2013 Lushan earthquake occurred on a blind thrust fault. The event was dominated by thrust faulting with a minor left-lateral strike-slip component. The dip angle of the seismogenic fault was approximately 45.0 degrees, and the fault strike was 208 degrees, which is similar to the strike of the southern Longmenshan fault. Our finite fault model reveals that the peak slip of 0.71 m occurred at a depth of 12 km, with substantial slip at depths of 6-20 km. The estimated magnitude was approximately Mw 6.6, consistent with seismological results. Furthermore, the calculated static Coulomb stress changes indicate that the 2013 Lushan earthquake may have been statically triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.

Abstract:Abstract Major earthquakes can cause extensive landsliding that poses a major threat to both property and human lives. In addition to co‐seismically triggered ground failure, the earthquake‐affected region remains vulnerable to landslides due to loosened and unstable materials and structures. Many researchers have studied landslide distributions and their controlling factors after earthquakes, but the function of ground motion is unclear. To investigate the connection in a strike‐slip earthquake, we analyzed the 5 September 2022 Luding earthquake ( M w 6.6) in Sichuan Province, China. We interpreted remote‐sensing images to obtain the landslide distribution before and after the earthquake, calculated surface deformation from D‐InSAR data (pre‐ and post‐earthquake), utilized a point‐source model for the focal mechanism inversion, and then constructed a finite fault model for the rupture slip. There are clear differences in the landslide distributions on the two sides of the fault before and after the earthquake. The density of co‐seismic landslides on the west side of the fault exceeded that on the east side. The patterns of surface deformation and ground motion indicated that the areas with larger deformation and motion were associated with more landslides. Furthermore, the landslide size decreased with distance from the fault. A new finding is that co‐seismic landslides induced by strike‐slip earthquakes result in high landslide concentration on both sides of the fault, while previous studies find that co‐seismic landslides triggered by thrust earthquakes present a hanging wall concentrated distribution pattern. These findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the connection between ground movement patterns and landslide distributions.

Abstract:Abstract Background On September 5, 2022, an Ms 6.8 earthquake occurred in Luding County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, China. The casualties and economic losses caused by the earthquake are huge. Most of the landslides triggered by this earthquake are small and medium-sized rock collapses and destructive debris flows, with a small number of large-scale landslides. Results There are 5007 coseismic landslides in the Luding earthquake VII-degree area and above, with a total area of 17.36 km 2 . The landslides are generally distributed along the NW-SE direction. The highest landslide area density is 13.8%, and the highest point density of the landslide is 35.73 km 2 . High-density area is mainly concentrated in the IX-degree area and the northeast side of the seismogenic fault. Coseismic landslides are more likely to develop in the area with the slope more than 40°, the slope direction of 67.5-112.5 degree, and vegetation coverage of 40–50%. More landslides are developed in granite areas and forest areas. The closer distance to active faults, the more the coseismic landslides develop. The correlation between coseismic landslide development and the distance from the active faults is better than that between coseismic landslide development and the distance from the seismogenic faults. Conclusion The landslide database used in this paper is the most perfect at present, and the research results have also been verified by fieldwork. This is also the first applied study of this landslide inventory, which indirectly confirmed the accuracy of the inventory. The results obtained in the manuscript will provide an important guideline for future disaster prevention and mitigation in southwest China.

Abstract:Using broadband seismic records from regional networks, we determined the focal mechanisms and depths of 37 earthquakes in the 2013 M 7.0 Lushan earthquake sequence (3.4⩽ M w ⩽5.1) by fitting the three-component waveform data. The results show that the earthquakes are predominantly thrust events, with occasional strike-slip mechanisms. Most earthquakes occurred at depths of 10–20 km. We derived the regional distribution of the average stress field in this area using the damped linear inversion method and the focal mechanisms obtained in this study. The inversion results suggest that the Lushan region and the adjacent area are mostly under compression. The orientations of the maximum principal axes trend NW-SE, with some local differences in the stress distribution at different depths. Compared with the distribution of the stress field in the Wenchuan earthquake area, the stress field in the southwest section of the Longmenshan Fault zone (LFZ) share similar characteristics, predominantly thrust faulting with a few strike-slip events and the maximum compression axes being perpendicular to the LFZ.
Extraction of pre-earthquake anomalies from borehole strain data using Graph WaveNet: a case study of the 2013 Lushan earthquake in China

Abstract:On 20 April 2013, Lushan experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0. In seismic assessments, borehole strainmeters, recognized for their remarkable sensitivity and inherent reliability in tracking crustal deformation, are extensively employed. However, traditional data-processing methods encounter challenges when handling massive dataset-s. This study proposes using a Graph WaveNet graph neural network to analyze borehole strain data from multiple stations near the earthquake epicenter and establishes a node graph structure using data from four stations near the Lushan epicenter, covering the years 2010–2013. After excluding the potential effects of pressure, temperature, and rainfall, we statistically analyzed the pre-earthquake anomalies. Focusing on the Guza, Xiaomiao, and Luzhou stations, which are the closest to the epicenter, the fitting results revealed two acceleration events of anomalous accumulation that occurred before the earthquake. Occurring approximately 4 months before the earthquake event, the first acceleration event indicated the pre-release of energy from a weak fault section. Conversely, the acceleration event observed a few days before the earthquake indicated a strong fault section that reached an unstable state with accumulating strain. We tentatively infer that these two anomalous cumulative accelerations may be related to the preparation phase for a large earthquake. This study highlights the considerable potential of graph neural networks in conducting multistation studies of pre-earthquake anomalies.

Abstract:An earthquake sequence is a retrospective designation of earthquake phenomena, and it can only be identified without doubt after the earthquake sequence has been completed. In view of the integrity, uniformity and systematicness of the Longmenshan fault zone or seismic belt, there is no denying the fact that the 20 April 2013 MW6.7 Lushan earthquake which occurred in the southwestern segment of the Longmenshan fault is an event of the Longmenshan fault zone as the 12 May 2008 MW7.9 Wenchuan earthquake. Taking into account the hypocentral location, focal mechanism, magnitude and ruptured area of the Lushan earthquake, it is preferable that the Lushan earthquake is the largest aftershock up to the present, of the 2008 MW7.9 Wenchuan mainshock. Due to the fact that the identificaion of an earthquake sequencc is phenomenalogical description with arbitrariness to some extent, whether the Lushan earthquake is a new mainshock or one of the aftershocks of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake is based on empirical knowledge and remains unsolved till the whole earthquake sequence has been completed, even though at present the arguments of the "one of the aftershocks of the Wenchuan earthquake" are convincing. It is emphasized that prompt solution should be given to some outstanding scientific issues related to the Lushan earthquake as well as prevention and mitigation of earthquake disasters.
An Infinite Slope Model Considering Unloading Joints for Spatial Evaluation of Coseismic Landslide Hazards Triggered by a Reverse Seismogenic Fault: A Case Study of the 2013 Lushan Earthquake

Abstract:Coseismic landslides pose a significant threat to the sustainability of both the natural environment and the socioeconomic fabric of society. This escalation in earthquake frequency has driven a growing interest in regional-scale assessment techniques for these landslides. The widely adopted infinite slope model, introduced by Newmark, is commonly utilized to assess coseismic landslide hazards. However, this conventional model falls short of capturing the influence of rock mass structure on slope stability. A novel methodology was previously introduced, considering the roughness of potential slide surfaces on the inner slope, offering a fresh perspective on coseismic landslide hazard mapping. In this paper, the proposed method is recalibrated using new datasets from the 2013 Lushan earthquake. The datasets encompass geological units, peak ground acceleration (PGA), and a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM), rasterized at a grid spacing of 30 m. They are integrated within an infinite slope model, employing Newmark's permanent deformation analysis. This integration enables the estimation of coseismic displacement in each grid area resulting from the 2013 Lushan earthquake. To validate the model, the simulated displacements are compared with the inventory of landslides triggered by the Lushan earthquake, allowing the derivation of a confidence level function that correlates predicted displacement with the spatial variation of coseismic landslides. Ultimately, a hazard map of coseismic landslides is generated based on the values of the certainty factor. The analysis of the area under the curve is utilized to illustrate the improved effectiveness of the proposed method. Comparative studies with the 2014 Ludian earthquake reveal that the coseismic landslides triggered by the 2013 Lushan earthquake predominantly manifest as shallow rock falls and slides. Brittle coseismic fractures are often associated with reverse seismogenic faults, while complaint coseismic fractures are more prevalent in strike–slip seismogenic faults. The mapping procedure stands as a valuable tool for predicting seismic hazard zones, providing essential insights for decision-making in infrastructure development and post-earthquake construction endeavors.

Investigation of local earthquakes in the Lhasa region

Abstract:The continental collision of the Indian and Eurasia plates has created the Tibetan plateau which is also a zone of active earthquakes. Because of the high elevation, there are fewer seismic stations in Tibet and therefore, most of the (small) local earthquakes were not detected by the global seismic network. Here we report our analyses of the earthquake records for the period of January 2007 to March 2008 from a Peking University's portable seismic array. We have relocated 79 local earthquakes in the study area. Among these events, there are two clusters that could be the resulted of either magma migration or the presence of water. The data have shown that a small but active fault exists near the city of Lhasa. We have also estimated the error in the epicenter determination of local earthquakes by the global seismic network.

Abstract:On 1 June 2022, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the southern segment of the Longmenshan fault zone on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, once again causing casualties and economic losses. Understanding the deep-seated dynamic mechanisms that lead to seismic events in the Lushan earthquake area and assessing the potential hazards in seismic gap areas are of significant importance. In this study, we utilized 118 magnetotelluric datasets collected from the Lushan earthquake area and employed three-dimensional electromagnetic inversion with topographic considerations to characterize the deep-seated three-dimensional resistivity structure of the Lushan earthquake area. The results reveal that the Shuangshi–Dachuan fault in the Lushan earthquake area can be divided into two relatively low-resistivity zones: a western zone dipping southeastward and an eastern zone with a steeper slightly northwestern dip. These two zones intersect at a depth of approximately 20 km, forming an extensional pattern resembling a "Y" shape. The epicenters of both the 2013 and 2022 Lushan earthquakes are primarily located in the upper constricted portion of the pocket-like low-resistivity body at depth. A Data Mining Approach to Predict Mass Movements Induced by Seismic Events in Sichuan, China

Abstract:The entire world has been affected by Earthquakes inducing catastrophic consequences. On 12 May 2008, an earthquake with magnitude 7.9 on the Richter scale occurred in the Wenchuan area of the Sichuan Province in China. This disaster associated with subsequent aftershocks caused many avalanches, landslides, debris flows, collapses, and quake lakes; and induced many unstable slopes. This work proposes a methodology using a Data Mining approach and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to predict these mass movements through their association with the main and aftershock epicenters, geologic faults, riverbed and topography. A dataset comprising more than 3,800 mass movements has been analyzed. Some models to predict the location of the mass movements induced by the seismic events were developed. These predictive models could be used for the responsible Chinese authorities as a relevant tool in identifying risk areas and rescuing survivors during a similar event in the future.

Abstract:<p>The study of bedrock fault scarps is a useful approach to identify paleo-earthquakes and acquire the faulting history in bedrock areas where traditional trench techniques are not applicable. Here, we report a study on the Luoyunshan piedmont fault (LYSPF), southwestern Shanxi Rift, China. Although several studies have analyzed the LYSPF, its faulting behavior is still under debate. For example, the tectonic geomorphology fails to determine the frequency of past slips and the elapsed time. To address these problems, we investigated two bedrock fault surfaces, Luoyuncun (northern segment) and Weicun (southern segment) using quantitative morphology analyses together with multiple Quaternary dating techniques. Quantitative morphology analysis shows that both bedrock fault surfaces have the characteristics of vertical segmentation. This kind of segmentation indicates that the fault surfaces are exhumed intermittently, likely owing to periodic faulting earthquakes. Therefore, earthquake events can be identified as morphological segments, and the corresponding co-seismic displacement can be determined by the height of these segments. According to the results from the quantitative morphology and dating techniques, four seismic events, with a co-seismic vertical displacement of 0.9 m, 0.82 m, 1.64 to 2.38 m and 2.30 to 2.54 m, on the northern segment occurred during the late Pleistocene, whereas, two seismic events, with a co-seismic vertical displacement of ~1.33 m and 1 to 1.08 m are identified on the southern segment occurred during the Holocene. Combined with the results of knickpoint series and trench techniques of the LYSPF, eight paleo-earthquake events were identified since 45 ka, with an average recurrence interval of 5.8 kyr. The more complete paleo-earthquake sequence also showed the possibility that the variation of the slip rate along the LYSPF depends on the segment, and that the displacement produced by the Linfen M 7½ earthquake of 649 CE has been recorded at the WC fault surface.</p>

Abstract:It is increasingly clear that landslides represent a major cause of economic costs and deaths in earthquakes in mountains. In the Wenchuan earthquake case, post-seismic cascading landslides continue to represent a major problem eight years on. Failure to anticipate the impact of cascading landslides could lead to unexpected losses of human lives and properties. Previous studies tended to focus on separate landslide processes, with little attention paid to the quantification of long-term evolution of multiple processes or the evolution of mass movements. The very active mass movements near the epicentre of the Wenchuan earthquake provided us a unique opportunity to understand the complex processes of the evolving cascading landslides after a strong earthquake. This study budgets the mass movements on the hillslopes and in the channels in the first eight years since the Wenchuan earthquake and verify a conservation in mass movements. A system illustrating the evolution and interactions of mass movement after a strong earthquake is proposed.

Simulation Of Rupture Process And Its Influence Factors Of The 2013 M(S)7.0 Lushan Earthquake

Abstract:The M-s 7.0 earthquake occurred on April 20, 2013 in Lushan, Sichuan province. The kinematic inversion on the source of this earthquake revealed the rupture process and co-seismic slip distribution of the earthquake. Based on the results of field geological survey, aftershock location and deep seismic reflection section, a listric fault model for the Lushan earthquake is constructed. In order to better understand the mechanical causes of the rupture process of the Lushan earthquake, we combine the source parameters with the tectonic stress field near the source and establish the temporal and spatial distribution relationship between the slip and traction on the fault plane. We simulate the rupture process of the Lushan earthquake by using the trial-and-error method with the given dynamic parameters based on the source kinematic inversion results and then discuss the influence of different dynamic parameters on the rupture process and co-seismic slip distribution of the Lushan earthquake. The results show that the initial stress is the key to decide whether the fault ruptures or not. The critical slip weakening displacement D-c has a great influence on the slip rate. The radius of nucleation zone and the initial stress of nucleation zone mainly affect the rate of nucleation. The local inhomogeneous fracture strength has a major effect on the fracture behavior and final slip distribution. In a word, the boundary integral equation method can effectively calculate the dynamic rupture process of the listric fault model of the Lushan earthquake and reproduce the main characteristics of the earthquake. The mechanical causes of fracture characteristics revealed by kinematic inversion results can be well explained by exploring the influence of dynamic parameters on the rupture process, which is important to understand the physical nature of seismic source process and to predict the main characteristics of the possible future earthquakes.

Abstract:Extremely hard-hit areas face frequent secondary geological hazards and difficulties in vegetation recovery, and subsequent effects have a significant impact on land cover changes. At present, there is a lack of research on the dynamic restoration of, and changes in, the ecological environment before and after an earthquake, and especially a lack of quantitative assessment of the impact of earthquakes on land cover at the microscopic scale of spatial distribution of landscape indices. Taking the Lushan earthquake in Sichuan Province as an example, this paper obtained land cover data from the study area between 2012 and 2020, and analyzes the spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of land cover change frequency by using a comprehensive land cover degree index, land cover transfer matrix and landscape ecology index. The results show that the types of cropland, forest, built-up and bare land have changed significantly in the study area. During the earthquake recovery period, the comprehensive land cover index of the study area showed an increasing trend, and land cover has been continuously improved under the effect of artificial measures and natural restoration. After 2013, patch density (PD) and landscape shape index (LSI) values decreased and aggregation index (AI) values increased for the vast majority of landscape land classes, indicating a benign ecological development across the region in the post-earthquake period. The research results are not only helpful to establish scientific ecological environmental management in the earthquake-stricken areas, but also helpful to formulate medium- and long-term ecological environmental monitoring and ecological restoration plans based on land cover change patterns.
