Abstract:Ultracold single molecules have wide-ranging potential applications, such as ultracold chemistry, precision measurements, quantum simulation, and quantum computation. However, given the difficulty of achieving full control of a complex atom-molecule system, the coherent formation of single molecules remains a challenge. Here, we report an alternative route to coherently bind two atoms into a weakly bound molecule at megahertz levels by coupling atomic spins to their two-body relative motion in a strongly focused laser with inherent polarization gradients. The coherent nature is demonstrated by long-lived atom-molecule Rabi oscillations. We further manipulate the motional levels of the molecules and measure the binding energy precisely. This work opens the door to full control of all degrees of freedom in atom-molecule systems.

Abstract:The angular optical trap (AOT) is a powerful instrument for measuring the torsional and rotational properties of a biological molecule. Thus far, AOT studies of DNA torsional mechanics have been carried out using a high numerical aperture oil-immersion objective, which permits strong trapping, but inevitably introduces spherical aberrations due to the glass-aqueous interface. However, the impact of these aberrations on torque measurements is not fully understood experimentally, partly due to a lack of theoretical guidance. Here, we present a numerical platform based on the finite element method to calculate forces and torques on a trapped quartz cylinder. We have also developed a new experimental method to accurately determine the shift in the trapping position due to the spherical aberrations by using a DNA molecule as a distance ruler. We found that the calculated and measured focal shift ratios are in good agreement. We further determined how the angular trap stiffness depends on the trap height and the cylinder displacement from the trap center and found full agreement between predictions and measurements. As further verification of the methodology, we showed that DNA torsional properties, which are intrinsic to DNA, could be determined robustly under different trap heights and cylinder displacements. Thus, this work has laid both a theoretical and experimental framework that can be readily extended to investigate the trapping forces and torques exerted on particles with arbitrary shapes and optical properties.

Abstract:Single atoms are interesting candidates for studying quantum optics and quantum information processing. Recently, trapping and manipulation of single atoms using tight optical dipole traps has generated considerable interest. Here we report an experimental investigation of the dynamics of atoms in a modified optical dipole trap with a backward propagating dipole trap beam, where a change in the two-atom collision rate by six times has been achieved. The theoretical model presented gives a prediction of high probabilities of few-atom loading rates under proper experimental conditions. This work provides an alternative approach to the control of the few-atom dynamics in a dipole trap and the study of the collective quantum optical effects of a few atoms.

Abstract:Since the advent of atom laser-cooling, trapping or cooling natural molecules has been a long standing and challenging goal. Here, we demonstrate a method for laser-trapping molecules that is radically novel in its configuration, in its underlined physical dynamics and in its outcomes. It is based on self-optically spatially-nanostructured high pressure molecular hydrogen confined in hollow-core photonic-crystal-fibre. An accelerating molecular-lattice is formed by a periodic potential associated with Raman saturation except for a 1-dimentional array of nanometer wide and strongly-localizing sections. In these sections, molecules with a speed of as large as 1800 m/s are trapped, and stimulated Raman scattering in the Lamb-Dicke regime occurs to generate high power forward and backward-Stokes continuous-wave laser with sideband-resolved sub-Doppler emission spectrum. The spectrum exhibits a central line with a sub-recoil linewidth of as low as 14 kHz, more than 5 orders-of-magnitude narrower than in conventional Raman scattering, and sidebands comprising Mollow triplet, molecular motional-sidebands and four-wave-mixing.
Photoassociation of multiple cold molecules in a dipole trap

Abstract:The generation of cold molecules is a core topic in the field of cold atoms and molecules, which has advanced relevant research like ultracold chemistry, quantum computation, and quantum metrology. With high atomic phase space density, optical dipole trap has been widely performed to prepare and trap cold molecules, and can also be further developed for multiple cold molecule formation and dynamics study. In this work, Rb2 molecules are photoassociated in the magneto-optical trap to obtain precise rovibrational spectroscopy, which provides accurate numerical references for multiple photoassociations. By achieving the harsh requirements of photoassociation in the optical dipole trap, the cold molecule photoassociation process is well explored, and different rovibrational cold molecules are formed in the optical dipole trap for the first time. This method can be universally extended to simultaneously photoassociate various molecules with different internal states or atomic species in just one optical dipole trap, and then advance generous cold molecule research such as cold molecule collision dynamics.

Force Spectroscopy with Dual-Trap Optical Tweezers: Molecular Stiffness Measurements and Coupled Fluctuations Analysis

Abstract:Dual trap optical tweezers are often used in high-resolution measurements in single-molecule biophysics. Such measurements can be hindered by the presence of extraneous noise sources, the most prominent of which is the coupling of fluctuations along different spatial directions, which may affect any optical tweezers setup. In this paper we analyze, both from the theoretical and the experimental points of view, the most common source for these couplings in Dual Trap Optical Tweezers setups: the misalignment of traps and tether. We give criteria to distinguish different kinds of misalignment, to estimate their quantitative relevance and to include them in the data analysis. The experimental data is obtained in a novel dual trap optical tweezers setup which directly measures forces. In the case in which misalignment is negligible we provide a method to measure the stiffness of traps and tether based on variance analysis. This method can be seen as a calibration technique valid beyond the linear trap region. Our analysis is then employed to measure the persistence length of ds-DNA tethers of three different lengths spanning two orders of magnitude. The effective persistence length of such tethers is shown to decrease with the contour length, in accordance with previous studies.

Abstract:Understanding collisions between ultracold molecules is crucial for making stable molecular quantum gases and harnessing their rich internal degrees of freedom for quantum engineering. Transient complexes can strongly influence collisional physics, but in the ultracold regime, key aspects of their behavior have remained unknown. To explain experimentally observed loss of ground-state molecules from optical dipole traps, it was recently proposed that molecular complexes can be lost due to photo-excitation. By trapping molecules in a repulsive box potential using laser light near a narrow molecular transition, we are able to test this hypothesis with light intensities three orders of magnitude lower than what is typical in red-detuned dipole traps. This allows us to investigate light-induced collisional loss in a gas of nonreactive fermionic $^{23}$Na$^{40}$K molecules. Even for the lowest intensities available in our experiment, our results are consistent with universal loss, meaning unit loss probability inside the short-range interaction potential. Our findings disagree by at least two orders of magnitude with latest theoretical predictions, showing that crucial aspects of molecular collisions are not yet understood, and provide a benchmark for the development of new theories.

Abstract:We report optical trapping of laser-cooled molecules at sufficient density to observe molecule-molecule collisions for the first time in a bulk gas. SrF molecules from a red-detuned magneto-optical trap (MOT) are compressed and cooled in a blue-detuned MOT. Roughly 30% of these molecules are loaded into an optical dipole trap with peak number density n0≈3×1010 cm−3 and temperature T≈40 μK . We observe two-body loss with rate coefficient β=2.7−0.8+1.2×10−10 cm3 s−1 . Abstract:Optical trapping is having ever-increasing impact in science $-$ particularly biophysics, photonics and most recently in quantum optomechanics $-$ owing to its superior capability for manipulating nanoscale structures and materials. However, essentially all experimental optical trapping studies in the optical dipole regime have, to date, been dominated by the interaction between a material's electric polarizability, $\alpha_{e}$, and the electric part of the incident electromagnetic field, and therefore described by electric field intensity gradient forces. Optical trapping based on optical magnetic light-matter interactions has not been experimentally addressed despite it's immediate extension of the boundaries of optical trapping research and applications. This paper addresses this long-standing deficiency through the realization of optical magnetic trapping of large index of refraction (i.e., Si) nanoparticles and also presents a formalism for quantitative understanding of the experimental findings. Our experimental optical trapping results require including optical magnetic polarizability, $\alpha_{m}$, and electric-magnetic scattering forces associated with the Photonic Hall effect that are qualitatively and quantitatively validated by Maxwell stress tensor calculations. Our findings bring new opportunities for nanoparticle manipulation, potentially relax the limitations Ashkin claimed based on the optical Earnshaw's theorem, motivate optical matter formation by optical magnetic interactions, and suggest new N-body effects and symmetry breaking to drive dynamics of optical matter systems.

Abstract:The volume of the object that can be manipulated in solution is continuously decreasing toward an ultimate goal of a single molecule. However, Brownian motions suppress the molecular trapping. To date, free-molecule trapping in solution has not been accomplished. Here, we develop a strategy to directly trap, investigate, and release single molecules (∼2 nm) in solution by using an adjustable plasmonic optical nanogap, which has been further applied for selective single-molecule trapping. Comprehensive experiments and theoretical simulations demonstrated that the trapping force originated from plasmonic nanomaterials. This technique opens an avenue to manipulate single molecules and other objects in the size range of primary interest for physics, chemistry, and life and material sciences without the limitations of strong bonding group, ultra-high vacuum, and ultra-low temperature, and makes possible controllable single-molecule manipulation and investigation as well as bottom-up construction of nanodevices and molecular machines.

Abstract:Optical tweezers (OTs) can immobilize and manipulate objects with sizes that span between nano- and micrometer scales. The manipulating ability of OTs is traditionally characterized by stability factor (S), which can only indicate an empirical " hit-or-miss " process. Additionally, the current quantitative models for trapping stability rarely consider the influence of external flow. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis to quantify the optical trapping stability in a perturbed asymmetric potential well is presented from the perspective of statistics, especially for weak trapping scenarios. Our analytical formulation takes experimentally measurable parameters including particle size, optical power, and spot width as inputs and precisely outputs a statistically relevant mean trapping time. Importantly, this formulation takes into account general and realistic cases including fluidic flow velocity and other perturbations. To verify the model, a back-focal-plane-interferometer-monitored trapping experiment in a flow is set up and the statistical characteristics of trapping time demonstrate good agreement with theoretical predictions. In total, the model quantitatively reveals the effects of external disturbance on trapping time, which will find applications where optical trapping stability is challenged by external perturbations in weak trapping conditions. Abstract:We describe a three-dimensional model of the magneto-optical trap (MOT) for the simplest case of (1+3)-level atoms. The atomic density matrix equations are solved up to eighth order in the Rabi frequency and compared with experimental observations. We propose that coherences between the excited state sublevels can largely explain the dependence of the atomic temperature on detuning and light intensity.
