Abstract:This work re-analyzes Gul et al. Nature Nanotechnology 2018 "Ballistic Majorana nanowire devices" using fuller data from the original experiments released in 2023 on Zenodo. The authors have prepared a correction to their article that appeared in Nature Nanotechnology in 2024. However, the correction does not address the concerns we identify here. We demonstrate that the fuller data contain extensive evidence for quantum dots and disorder that are completely inconsistent with the authors' conclusion that they have achieved ballistic devices containing zero bias peaks of likely Majorana origin. We show how data selection, data cropping and undisclosed data processing played a role in composing the figures of the final published paper.

Abstract:Artificial assembly of one-dimensional ballistic conductors into a two-dimensional (2D) system can provide an ideal platform to study coherent electronic coupling and designable physical properties. However, systematic investigations of both the coupling and ballistics in such artificially assembled systems remain scare. Here, we report collective quantum coherence in a quasi-2D film consisting of well-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with intertube coupling. The conductance plateau in the quasi-ballistic regime demonstrates subband occupation of hundreds of CNTs in a collective manner. The experimental observations agree with density functional theory simulations considering subband redistribution with intertube coupling. Finally, we summarize the quantum coherent transport for multichannel coupled systems in distinct regimes. These results open an avenue towards exploring engineered artificial systems for coherent electronic devices and hold promise for the development of next-generation high-performance and quantum nanoelectronics.

Abstract:A quantitative metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) model and a Matlab based program have been developed and used to obtain parameters that are important for characterizing semiconductor nanowires (NWs), nanotubes (NTs) or nanoribbons (NRs). The use of the MSM model for quantitative analysis of nonlinear current-voltage curves of one-dimensional semiconducting nanostructures is illustrated by working through two examples, i.e., an amorphous carbon NT and a ZnO NW, and the obtained parameters include the carrier density, mobility, resistance of the NT(NW), and the heights of the two Schottky barriers formed at the interfaces between metal electrodes and semiconducting NT(NW).

Abstract:Data for the plots in the main text. Instructions for some data sets are contained within the Excel file. Detailed description: One Microsoft Excel file containing data for each plot in the main manuscript figures, as labelled. Photoluminescent data (1A) is measured through 355 nm laser illumination of a typical CdSxSe1-x nanowire at 7 different locations as shown in the image in the main text; intensities for each location are normalized to their respective maximum intensity. Photocurrent measurements (1C) are made applying bias between two electrodes toward the CdSe-rich end of a typical nanowire photodetector array, under the labelled irradiances by 490 nm light. Time response (1D) is of the same unit as measured for the photocurrent data, under illumination by a blue LED, pulsed at a frequency of 50 Hz. Calibration data (1E) is supplied for each unit (labelled as R" i", where" i" is the unit index) of a typical nanowire spectrometer with 30 units, consisting of the photocurrent measured under illumination at different wavelengths from 490 to 630 nm (spaced in the case of this example at increments of 5 nm) by a tunable Xe arc lamp source. Note that for the nanowire devices presented in Figs. 2A-D, 3F and 4G, a narrower sample spacing of 3 nm was used in the calibration. Note also that calibration photocurrents have been normalised for the purpose of more clearly illustrating the spread of cut-off wavelengths across the set of units. Abstract:Disorder is the primary obstacle in current Majorana nanowire experiments. Reducing disorder or achieving ballistic transport is thus of paramount importance. In clean and ballistic nanowire devices, quantized conductance is expected with plateau quality serving as a benchmark for disorder assessment. Here, we introduce ballistic PbTe nanowire devices grown using the selective-area-growth (SAG) technique. Quantized conductance plateaus in units of $2e^2/h$ are observed at zero magnetic field. This observation represents an advancement in diminishing disorder within SAG nanowires, as none of the previously studied SAG nanowires (InSb or InAs) exhibit zero-field ballistic transport. Notably, the plateau values indicate that the ubiquitous valley degeneracy in PbTe is lifted in nanowire devices. This degeneracy lifting addresses an additional concern in the pursuit of Majorana realization. Moreover, these ballistic PbTe nanowires may enable the search for clean signatures of the spin-orbit helical gap in future devices.

Abstract:Semiconductor nanowires have opened new research avenues in quantum transport owing to their confined geometry and electrostatic tunability. They have offered an exceptional testbed for superconductivity, leading to the realization of hybrid systems combining the macroscopic quantum properties of superconductors with the possibility to control charges down to a single electron. These advances brought semiconductor nanowires to the forefront of efforts to realize topological superconductivity and Majorana modes. A prime challenge to benefit from the topological properties of Majoranas is to reduce the disorder in hybrid nanowire devices. Here, we show ballistic superconductivity in InSb semiconductor nanowires. Our structural and chemical analyses demonstrate a high-quality interface between the nanowire and a NbTiN superconductor which enables ballistic transport. This is manifested by a quantized conductance for normal carriers, a strongly enhanced conductance for Andreev-reflecting carriers, and an induced hard gap with a significantly reduced density of states. These results pave the way for disorder-free Majorana devices.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive optical spectroscopic study on air-suspended single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with diameters ranging from 1.7 nm to 3.4 nm and at higher-order optical transitions, a previously inaccessible regime. We establish an atlas of resonant radial breathing modes (RBMs) for more than 100 new SWNTs in this unknown regime, thus significantly extending the RBM dataset in Kataura plot and enhancing our knowledge of SWNTs. Additionally, we develop an innovative transfer technique for manipulating individual SWNTs of known chiralities (determined by optical spectroscopies) by integrating a polarization imaging technique with the conventional van der Waals (vdW) dry transfer. The unprecedented spatial and structural control of this technique enables a deterministic fabrication and integration of a variety of novel mixed-dimensional vdW heterostructures that were considered unachievable before. Our work significantly extends RBM dataset of SWNT Kataura plot and represents a huge advancement towards controlled fabrication and integration of mixed-dimensional vdW heterostructures encompassing one-dimensional vdW materials.

Abstract:The enclosed data release consists of a subset of the calibration data from the Majorana Demonstrator experiment. Each Majorana event is accompanied by raw Germanium detector waveforms, pulse shape discrimination cuts, and calibrated final energies, all shared in an HDF5 file format along with relevant metadata. This release is specifically designed to support the training and testing of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms upon our data. This document is structured as follows. Section I provides an overview of the dataset's content and format; Section II outlines the location of this dataset and the method for accessing it; Section III presents the NPML Machine Learning Challenge associated with this dataset; Section IV contains a disclaimer from the Majorana collaboration regarding the use of this dataset; Appendix A contains technical details of this data release. Abstract:We report four probe measurements of the low field magnetoresistance (MR) in single core/shell GaAs/MnAs nanowires (NWs) synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy, demonstrating clear signatures of anisotropic magnetoresistance that track the field-dependent magnetization. A comparison with micromagnetic simulations reveals that the principal characteristics of the magnetoresistance data can be unambiguously attributed to the nanowire segments with a zinc blende GaAs core. The direct correlation between magnetoresistance, magnetization, and crystal structure provides a powerful means of characterizing individual hybrid ferromagnet/semiconductor nanostructures.

Abstract:Ballistic electron transport is a key requirement for existence of a topological phase transition in proximitized InSb nanowires. However, measurements of quantized conductance as direct evidence of ballistic transport have so far been obscured due to the increased chance of backscattering in one-dimensional nanowires. We show that by improving the nanowire metal interface as well as the dielectric environment we can consistently achieve conductance quantization at zero magnetic field. Additionally we study the contribution of orbital effects to the sub-band dispersion for different orientation of the magnetic field, observing a near-degeneracy between the second and third sub-bands.

Abstract:High-mobility complex-oxide heterostructures and nanostructures offer new opportunities for extending the paradigm of quantum transport beyond the realm of traditional III-V or carbon-based materials. Recent quantum transport investigations with LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3}-based quantum dots reveal the existence of a strongly correlated phase in which electrons form spin-singlet pairs without becoming superconducting. Here, we report evidence for the micrometer-scale ballistic transport of electron pairs in quasi-1D LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3} nanowire cavities. In the paired phase, Fabry-Perot-like quantum interference is observed, in sync with conductance oscillations observed in the superconducting regime (at a zero magnetic field). Above a critical magnetic field B_{p}, the electron pairs unbind and the conductance oscillations shift with the magnetic field. These experimental observations extend the regime of ballistic electronic transport to strongly correlated phases.

Abstract:In ferromagnetic nanostructures, the ballistic anisotropic magnetoresistance (BAMR) is a change in the ballistic conductance with the direction of magnetization due to spin-orbit interaction. Very recently, a directional dependent ballistic conductance has been predicted to occur in a number of newly synthesized nonmagnetic semiconducting nanostructures subject to externally applied magnetic fields, without necessitating spin-orbit coupling. In this article, we review past works on the prediction of this BAMR effect in core-shell nanowires and rolled-up nanotubes. This is complemented by new results we establish for the transport properties of tubular nanosystems subject to external magnetic fields.

Abstract:An experimental realization of a ballistic superconductor proximitized semiconductor nanowire device is a necessary step towards engineering topological quantum electronics. Here, we report on ballistic transport in In Sb nanowires grown by molecular-beam epitaxy contacted by superconductor electrodes. At an elevated temperature, clear conductance plateaus are observed at zero magnetic field and in agreement with calculations based on the Landauer formula. At lower temperature, we have observed characteristic Fabry–Pérot patterns which confirm the ballistic nature of charge transport.Furthermore, the magnetoconductance measurements in the ballistic regime reveal a periodic variation related to the Fabry–Pérot oscillations. The result can be reasonably explained by taking into account the impact of magnetic field on the phase of ballistic electron’s wave function, which is further verified by our simulation. Our results pave the way for better understanding of the quantum interference effects on the transport properties of In Sb nanowires in the ballistic regime as well as developing of novel device for topological quantum computations.

Abstract:We develop a practical machine learning approach to determine the disorder landscape of Majorana nanowires by using training of the conductance matrix and inverting the conductance data in order to obtain the disorder details in the system. The inversion carried out through machine learning using different disorder parametrizations turns out to be unique in the sense that any input tunnel conductance as a function of chemical potential and Zeeman energy can indeed be inverted to provide the correct disorder landscape. Our work opens up a qualitatively new direction of directly determining the topological invariant and the Majorana wave-function structure corresponding to a transport profile of a device using simulations that quantitatively match the specific conductance profile. In addition, this also opens up the possibility for optimizing Majorana systems by figuring out the (generally unknown) underlying disorder only through the conductance data. Abstract:The antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Mn3Sn has attracted wide attention due to its vast anomalous transverse transport properties despite barely any net magnetization. So far, the magnetic properties of Mn3Sn have been experimentally investigated on micrometer scale samples but not in nanometers. In this study, we measured the local anomalous Nernst effect of a (0001)-textured Mn3Sn nanowire using a tip-contact-induced temperature gradient with an atomic force microscope.
