Abstract:Natural Gas Hydrates (NGH) offer a promising solution to the global energy shortage. Nevertheless, the extraction of NGH encounters complexities and challenges in marine environments, necessitating the systematic separation of seawater, NGH particles, and sand, as well as the backfilling of sand to prevent damage to the seabed geological structure. Leveraging computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies on operational and structural parameters, we have developed an optimized Axial Annulus In-situ Hydrocyclone Desander (AAIHD-2). By enhancing the radial forces exerted and extending the suspension time of particles within the flow field, the separation efficiencies of sand and NGH reached 84.7 % and 76.1 %, respectively. Increasing the length of the separation zone proves advantageous in boosting the separation efficiency of both sand and NGH. Notably, while the sand separation efficiency increases with higher flow rate, the NGH separation efficiency decreases. AAIHD-2 exhibits a maximum pressure drop of 320.7 kPa, constituting a mere 2.1 % of the environmental pressure (15.2 MPa), thereby ensuring the preservation of NGH equilibrium throughout the extraction process. This study is poised to facilitate the efficient separation of NGH and the backfilling of sand in order to enable the safe extraction of seabed NGH.

Abstract:Natural gas hydrates as sustainable energy resources are inherently affected by mineral surfaces and confined spaces in reservoirs. However, the habits of hydrates in geological sediments are still an open question. In this work, we systemically studied the process of hydrate formation and dissociation in sediments from the Shenhu area of the South China Sea to examine the evolution of hydrate saturation and permeability in sediments and their relationship. Characterization of samples indicates that sediments of the Shenhu area are mainly composed of clay and fine sand grains and provide a large number of nanopores for hydrate accumulation. For in situ observations enabled by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance methods, the formation of hydrates shows a different kinetic behavior with an induction time compared to hydrate dissociation. Estimated by variations of hydrate saturation (%) over time, the rate of hydrate formation is around 12%/min, while the dissociation rate increases to 3%/min with the higher temperature. With the presence of hydrates, pore space and thus permeability of sediments decreased obviously by one and three orders of magnitude when the hydrate saturation is 20 and 45%, respectively. Compared to models with the assumption of grain-coating and pore-filling hydrates, the tendency of permeability evolution from NMR measurements is between fitted lines from models. It highlights that the existing models considering a single pattern of hydrate growth cannot precisely describe the relationship between permeability and hydrate saturation. Hybrid hydrate habits coexist in sediments resulting from heterogeneous pore structures and thus complex gas–water distributions.

Abstract:Natural gas hydrate (NGH) as the new generation clean energy resource possesses tremendous commercial potential and strategic significance. Solid fluidization is one of the major extraction approaches and shows advantages in reducing safety risks as the reservoir pressure is maintained at native condition. Despite of great promises in this technology, one critical challenge embedded within the extraction process is the deep separation of NGH particles from their weakly consolidated sands. Solving this practical issue requires comprehensive understanding of the interactions between NGH fragments and sands yet seldom systematic studies were available. Herein, we proposed to achieve simultaneous NGH-sand consolidation breaking and sand removal by hydro-cyclone technology. We firstly launched a systematic theoretical analysis on the mechanical forces of NGH fragments within the swirling flow field, and then validated the principle of our method on polyproylene-quartz sand research template. We constructed a dual-chamber cyclone desander (DCCD) apparatus and the results showed polypropylene recovery efficiency was as high as 99.8%. Collectively, our solid fluidization technology pioneers the development of safe NGH extraction by killing consolidation breaking and separation these two birds with one stone.
Study on Axial-Flow Hydrocyclone for In-Situ Sand Removal of Natural Gas Hydrate in the Subsea

Abstract:Natural gas hydrate (NGH) has become the most potential emerging green energy known in the 21st century due to its characteristics of wide distribution, abundant reserves and clean combustion. This study designs an axial annulus in situ hydrocyclone desander (AAIHD) based on drilling instruments in order to resolve the serious problem of sand production during solid fluidization of NGH. The effect of the inlet flow rate and separation zone length on the sand removal efficiency of the AAIHD is tested through experimental research. The results indicate that AAIHD has a higher separation performance when the separation zone length is L/D=12.4 and the inlet flow rate is in the range of 10 m(3)/h to 25 m(3)/h, and the maximum separation efficiency reaches 77.4%. The purpose of this study is to achieve in-situ sand removal and the backfilling of sand slurry in addition to facilitate the advancement of solid fluidized exploration technologies.

Abstract:Natural gas hydrate has been proved significant as a kind of unconventional energy source.However,the sand production from gas hydrate-bearing deposits has remained a nightmare to the commercial development of the resource.The northern slope of the South China Sea is an important natural gas hydrate area in China.The natural gas hydrate there is distributed mainly in a scattered pattern by weakly cemented deposits and it really is urgent to study the mechanism of sand production for sustainable development of the resource.The fundamental reason of sand production is the decrease in the strength of reservoir medium,which is cemented by hydrate,and effected by the factors of hydrate saturation,pore fluid pressure,flow rate,production pressure and so on.Based on the comparison of sand production from the natural gas hydrate reservoir to the conventional oil and gas reservoir,this paper summarizes the up-todate research results of sand production in weakly cemented sandstone reservoirs,and taking it as a reference we studied the sand production in natural gas hydrate reservoirs.
Hydrocyclone Micrometer Sized Separation Technology for Exploitation of Natural Gas Hydrate

Abstract:Natural gas hydrate is a key future clean energy resource, and sand control is crucial in natural gas hydrate production. However, the sand control is still inefficient, which impedes industrialized development of natural gas hydrate. From production test carried out in the South China Sea, we found the separation of micrometer-sized sand from the fluid is the main challenge in sand control. Based on high-speed motion in our 3D rotating turbulent flow field of hydrocyclone, our study presents a new technology to realize efficient separation of micrometer-sized sand and breaking consolidation between hydrate and sand. As results of hydrocyclone separation experiments, we have the high separation efficiency that is up to 92.23% for silica sand and 98.87% for PP; also only 0.46%~1.05% of PP powder remains in recovered materials. In conclusion, the technology proves the ability of breaking-consolidation and realizes the goal of separation of micrometer-sized particles, and thus improve the sand control in exploitation of marine natural gas hydrate.
Gas Production Behavior from Hydrate-Bearing Fine Natural Sediments Through Optimized Step-Wise Depressurization

Abstract:There have been several field tests around the world to recover natural gas from gas hydrate reservoirs, yet they mostly suffer from the low productivity, sand problems and poor economic efficiency. The ultralow permeability of the sediments and an insufficient heat supply act as major barriers. Intense investigations have been carried out to study the gas production behavior from lab-synthesized hydrate-bearing coarse sands; yet the porous matrices could differ significantly from the natural sediments. Few studies have been found to focus on the role of fine natural sediments in the gas recovery performance. In this study, natural marine sediments from the South China Sea are used as the porous matrices, and gas is produced through an optimized stepwise depressurization. Significant differences in the gas production behaviors from fine natural sediments and coarse grains are found. The fine marine sediments may induce the blockage of the production well, even with protection measures; this problem will result in an uncontrolled pressure drop and gas output. Moreover, the stepwise depressurization efficiently contributes to remitting the temperature drop of the reservoir, increasing the minimum temperature from -0.5 degrees C upon a straight pressure drop to 0.27 degrees C upon a step-wise depressurization. This method can therefore help prevent the ice generation during hydrate dissociation. Additionally, a finer pressure gradient of 0.5 MPa will enhance the hydrate dissociation rate by 18.92% compared with the 2 MPa step scenario. The average gas production rate is determined to positively correlate with the Stefan number, which indicates a dominant role of the sensible heat of the reservoir in the efficient gas production. The findings could be applied in the field tests of gas hydrates to avoid ice generation and achieve a stable and continuous gas production behavior.

Abstract:Nowadays, energy shortages and global environmental pollution problems are becoming increasingly prominent, and the exploration of clean and renewable energy has become an important direction of energy research. Natural gas hydrates have become the most promising alternative energy source in the future due to its advantages of high calorific value, small environmental hazards and abundant mineral deposits. About 99% of natural gas hydrates are stored in the seabed formation. In 2014, China proposed solid-state fluidized mining technology for marine natural gas hydrates. One of its key technologies is to remove sand from hydrates in real time and backfill the sand on the seabed. Therefore, a downhole axial hydrocyclone suitable for the exploitation of marine natural gas hydrates is proposed in this paper. The purpose of this study is to achieve real-time sand removal and backfilling of downhole hydrate mixed slurry, reduce the sand content of produced fluid, protect the seabed stratum structure, and at the same time reduce the energy consumption of pipeline transportation. In this study, the experimental method was used to evaluate the separation performance of the cyclone with a nominal diameter of 100 mm under different working conditions.

Abstract:Unlike conventional oil and gas sources, natural gas hydrate (NGH) is stored in solid form within the pores of loose submarine sediments. Production by any method poses a complex problem involving phase transition and multi-phase flow of gas and water. The evolution of hydrate dissociation from the solid phase to gas and liquid phases in a hydrate reservoir is a dynamic process incorporating pore structure and multi-phase seepage. The solid–gas-liquid phase dissociation of NGH affects reservoir seepage properties by altering the micropore structure of the hydrate-bearing sediments. This study, based on the lattice Boltzmann method of modeling fluids flow, clearly demonstrates the micropore-scale changes in pressure and heat transfer that take place during hydrate dissociation. Pore-scale heterogeneity is found to influence the complex development of hydrates in a porous clayey silt medium during dissociation. The effect of hydrate, gas and water saturation on the evolution of relative permeability is identified, and the relationship between relative permeability and hydrate saturation during hydrate dissociation is quantified. These findings provide theoretical support for the implementation of marine natural gas hydrate production testing and future commercial production in China.

Abstract:Flue gas poses subsurface direct storage inefficiency due to its high non-CO 2 content, while surface separation, desulfurization and denitrification processes require additional equipment and financial resources. To address these challenges, flue gas subsurface component separation and CO 2 sequestration within aquifer were proposed in this paper. CO 2 migrates notably slower than N 2 , leading to the gathering of N 2 at gas flooding front and the occurrence of CO 2 hysteresis during flue gas filtration within the aquifer. The phenomenon, characterized by gas composition deviations from the original injection mole fractions of N 2 and CO 2 , is referred to as the flue gas component separation. Numerical simulation results indicate that the solubility difference between N 2 and CO 2 is the primary force driving the separation of components, and the asynchronous filtration velocities of the gas and aqueous phases further promote the separation. Thus, simultaneous N 2 separation and CO 2 storage can achieve by the optimized gas-water alternate injection, and the efficiencies of N 2 separation and CO 2 storage are inversely correlated. Increasing N 2 mole fraction within the injected flue gas enhances the efficiency of N 2 separation, while having a slight effect on CO 2 storage. Water vapor in flue gas condenses and integrates into the liquid phase, while O2 component is produced slightly later than N2, leading to a marginal reduction in N2 separation efficiency. The synergistic influences of aquifer temperature and pressure exhibit bidirectionality, stemming from the shift between the dominant factors between CO 2 dissolution and gas sweep efficiency. Conditions of relatively lower aquifer temperatures and moderate pressures, particularly in medium permeability aquifers, are more favorable for enhancing N2 separation and CO2 storage. This proposal method holds the potential for efficient subsurface separation of flue gas components and concurrent underground storage of CO 2 , thereby contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation of climate change.

The study of exploiting and utilizing natural gas hydrate resource is introduced, as well as a new method conversing the hydrates into liquid fuels.
Pore-Scale Investigation of Decomposition-Methods-Dependent Fluid Flow Properties in Hydrate-Bearing Sediments

Abstract:Summary Depressurization (PD) and thermal stimulation (TS) are the primary methods for producing gas from natural gas hydrate (NGH) sediments. Fluid flow properties of the hydrate sediment, such as permeability, are fundamental parameters for simulating both processes. Most of the existing formulated permeability models are based on the numerical or experimental investigation of hydrate morphology evolution without considering the decomposition methods. In this study, we investigate the hydrate-decomposition-methods (PD and TS processes)-dependent fluid flow properties of hydrate sediments, which is achieved by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) scanning of hydrate morphology evolution during PD- and TS-induced decomposition, as well as pore-scale modeling of fluid flow in the extracted 3D fluid-rock-hydrate images. We find that the decomposition behavior during TS is much more complicated than that during PD. The retardation zone in the PD sample increases the heterogeneity of the pore structure, while the secondary hydrates generated during TS cause even more heterogeneity in the pore space. The better facilitation of the TS method on hydrate split is favorable for the continuity of the gas phase. The pore-scale fluid flow simulation shows that the modified Kozeny-Carman (K-C) model is the best to describe the evolution of the normalized permeability with hydrate saturation during PD. However, a single model is not sufficient to describe the normalized permeability during TS decomposition due to the stronger heterogeneous porous structure reformed by the local accumulation of secondary hydrates. The two-phase flow capability is best at the initial stage of PD decomposition, while the two-phase flow region becomes wider as TS decomposition progresses. These results provide significant references for the simulation of the natural hydrate extraction process using different decomposition methods.

Abstract:The exploitation of unsealed marine hydrate deposits is of greater commercial value, but also more challenging because of the risks of the invading of huge body of sea water and subsidence of the seabed. In this work, we proposed a new method to recover natural gas from the usealed hydrate deposits saturated with water by pressure-retaining gas (CO2 + H2) injection. A series of experimental simulations was performed to prove its feasibility through establishing a highly simulated unsealed marine hydrate-bearing sediments system. The results demonstrated that overlying water invading was almost completely inhibited for the pressure-retaining approach while unimpeded for the simple depressrization process. Further, we designed a temporary depressurization process before gas injection to establish a flow field for gas in the sediments. This combined operation effectively enhanced the migration and spread of the injected gas, eventually increasing gas recovery ratio from 25% to 60% while the produced water/gas ratio remains as low as 12.6 ST kg/m3. Additionally, it is proved that the balance between CO2 sequestered and CH4 recovered could be achieved, which was an excellent support for reservoir stability. The combination method realized a higher CH4 concentration in the produced gas and a lower injection-production ratio, which greatly reduced the costs of gas injection and subsequent treatment of produced gas. For comparison, similar simulation work was also performed with respect to sealed gas-rich hydrate-bearing sediments. Overall, this temporary depressurization aided pressure-retaining gas injection approach is very promising for high efficient and safe exploitation of marine hydrtates.

Abstract:Natural gas hydrates are considered as a potential energy resource for the future. In this study, for the first time, the pilot-scale hydrate simulator (PHS), with an effective volume of 117.8 L, was applied to investigate the multifield coupling (decomposition-heat transfer-flow) and heterogeneity during hydrate dissociation using the newly added flow-field measurement system. The experimental method adopted in this study is the huff and puff in conjunction with depressurization (H&P-D). The experimental results show that the middle layer of the hydrate reservoir is the area where the hydrates are most likely to reform in the depressurization stage. Moreover, this layer has the highest pressure during the huff and puff production stage, which makes the production well in the middle layer contribute little to the natural gas production. Through the coupling of decomposition-heat transfer-flow, it was found that the hydrates far from the center of the lower layer of the hydrate reservoir are decomposed until the ninth cycle of huff and puff (H&P). It was determined from the analysis of the pressure field and heat transfer field that the distribution of the hydrates is not uniform and the decomposition is heterogeneous. The hydrates are most abundant in the lower layer and least abundant in the upper layer. The time for hydrate decomposition is longest in the lower layer and shortest in the upper layer. This experiment makes up for the lack of flow-field analysis of the hydrate decomposition process in previous studies, and these experimental findings provide theoretical support for the future exploitation of natural gas hydrates.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The extraction of natural gas hydrates (NGH) for using as an alternative energy source necessitates the separation of sands from the mixed slurry of gas hydrates and backfill of the sand slurry onto the seafloor. Conventional hydrocyclones used for mining cannot be applied to such conditions due to the limited space of the mining pipeline. Therefore, here we propose a hydrocyclone suitable for subsea gas hydrate extraction. This study is intended to study the effects of operating parameters and geometric parameters on the performance of the hydrocyclone by experiment and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, and to improve the performance of the hydrocyclone. The results show that the optimal flow rate of the hydrocyclone separator is 7 m3/h; as the solid content of the inlet increases, the separation efficiency will decrease, and the pressure drop will increase. The energy consumption caused by the vortex in the blind zone can be reduced and the separation efficiency increases as the X/D decreases. The separation efficiency first increases and then decreases with the increase of L/D. The separation efficiency reaches its maximum when L/D is 1.2, but further increase<del>s</del> in the L/D will increase the resistance loss along the journey, and the pressure drop will continue to increase. This study is applicable to solid-liquid separation in underground mining pipelines. The purpose of this study is to achieve real-time sand removal and the backfilling of sand slurry in addition to guiding industrial design.

Abstract:Effective production of natural gas from hydrate-bearing sediments by using various strategies (such as depressurization) is an important way to solve the current global energy crisis. Nevertheless, hydrate dissociation during gas production can weaken sediment strength, influencing reservoir stability and subsequent gas production. Previous studies focused mainly on the analysis of production behavior of natural gas from hydrates, but few on reservoir stability. In this work, evolution of gas production, reservoir characteristics and sediment deformation were analyzed thoroughly with ABAQUS platform. Investigation on gas production revealed that the average production rate was 5.57 × 10 4 m 3 /day, indicating that development strategies mentioned herein can achieve the goal of commercial development of gas hydrates. Although the changes of hydrate saturation and effective stress both affected the characteristics of hydrate reservoir throughout hydrate development operation, hydrate saturation was the main influencing factor. The contour of the distribution nephogram of reservoir characteristics basically coincided with that of the hydrate saturation distribution nephogram. Meanwhile, the yield area around wellbore appearing in the early stage of development operation corresponded to the area prone to sand production. However, the yield area near the seabed appearing in the late stage of development operation corresponded to the area prone to submarine landslide. Finally, investigation on sediment deformation indicated, except for the dissociation area, which experienced significant compaction, the sediments in other areas in the confined space experienced continuous subsidence. This study is expected to lay a theoretical foundation for proposing engineering measures to avoid uncontrollable geological disasters in the process of hydrate development.

Abstract:Though understanding the gas production behavior from methane hydrate in sediments by depressurization are critical for the utilization of gas hydrate resource and has been widely studied, very few researches are reported using natural marine sediments as porous matrices. Significant differences have been found between the natural sediments and widely used coarse sands; difficulties could be commonly encountered in the formation and production process arising from the fine grain sizes and thereby low permeability. In this work, gas production behavior in hydrate-bearing natural marine sediments from the South China Sea was investigated by depressurization with different gas production pressures (2 MPa, 3 MPa and 4 MPa)and pressure gradients (1 MPa, 2 MPa and 4 MPa). Results show that the gas production process consists of two main stages: the rapid free gas liberation stage when the pressure and temperature drop quickly; the hydrate decomposition stage when the gas production slows down and temperature remains relatively stable and then rises to the backpressure driven by heat transfer from the ambient. A high pressure gradient and low production pressure were found to efficiently facilitate the gas production process. The minimum temperature during production significantly varies, under the combined effects of fast gas release and hydrate decomposition, which could play a crucial role in the production behavior. Furthermore, the difference in the thermal conductivity of the natural marine sediments with common coarse grains seriously affects the heat transfer and gas production behavior, with heat transfer from the ambient to the production well with a radial temperature gradient. The inhomogeneity of hydrate saturation vertically resulting from the low permeability of natural sediments also results in a non-uniform temperature distribution during production, which could locally trigger the secondary hydrate formation and freezing thereby hindering the gas production. Therefore, significant differences could be present in the natural sediments, making this work helpful in understanding the production behavior from natural hydrate deposits.

Abstract:Natural gas hydrate is a promising clean and efficient energy source, but reformation during mining can impede commercial utilization. The impact of gas flow on hydrate reformation and reservoir seepage characteristics has not been extensively researched despite being a crucial parameter in hydrate mining processes. This study employs a core holder to simulate the formation and dissociation of hydrate in clayey silt sediments from the South China Sea (SCS). Differential gas pressure gradients were manipulated to simulate reformation under varying gas flow conditions, during which the water content and pore distribution were quantified with a low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer. Meanwhile, the gas permeabilities k(S h) concerning different hydrate saturation (S h) were measured under constant effective stress. Results indicated that gas flow effectively enhances hydrate reformation, resulting in an increase of the maximum hydrate saturation from 9.44% to 21.15% and an increase of the average reformation rate from 0.15 cm3/h to 0.26 cm3/h with an escalating gas pressure differential from 0 to 1 MPa. Hydrate growth primarily occurs laterally along the gas–water interface under low saturation conditions (ΔS h < 10%), while vertical growth dominates at high hydrate saturations (ΔS h > 10%). Notably, the gas flow encourages hydrates to occupy capillaries with a smaller radius under high saturation conditions.
