Abstract:Technologies used for separating alkene from dry gas are reviewed,which include cryogenic method,absorption,hydrate separation,membrane separation and adsorption separation.The investment of cryogenic method and absorption is comparatively high.The purity of product obtained from hydrate separation process is low.Life of membrane used in membrane separation process is usually less than one year.The pressure swing adsorption considered as a clean and low cost technology is a promising technology applied in alkene separation from dry gas.

Abstract:Hydrocarbon separation is one of the most critically important and complex industrial separation processes, offering versatile bulk chemicals and vital support to the national economy. Traditional separation technologies, such as cryogenic distillation and solvent extraction, are energy-intensive and cause serious environmental stress. Moreover, the growth of industries and technologies and the greater requirements for products (e.g., purity) lead to challenges that cannot be met using traditional separation methods. Adsorptive and membrane-based separations are recognized as energy-efficient alternatives by which to revolutionize the current energy-intensive conditions and satisfy the new demands. This critical review presents the recent progress in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and related membranes (e.g., continuous MOF membranes and mixed-matrix membranes) for hydrocarbon separation. The contributions of the underlying separation mechanisms (e.g., enthalpy-driven thermodynamic equilibrium, molecular sieving, kinetic separation based on molecular size, and combined mechanisms) and the adopted strategies (e.g., defect and microstructure control, membrane thickness and interfacial compatibility) to the breaking of trade-off (e.g., permeability/selectivity and capacity/selectivity) and the design of novel materials and processing technologies are discussed. Moreover, this review also summarizes the potential barriers that exist from the academic to the ultimate industrial implementations and the prospects of future development.

Abstract:Refineries generally employ multiple energy-intensive distillation/adsorption columns to separate and purify complicated chemical mixtures. Materials such as multi-functional molecular separators integrating various modules capable of separating molecules according to their shape and chemical properties simultaneously may represent an alternative. Herein, we address this challenge in the context of one-step removal of alkynes and propadiene from cracking gases (up to 10 components) using a multi-functional and responsive material ZU-33 through a guest/temperature dual-response regulation strategy. The responsive and guest-adaptive properties of ZU-33 provide the optimized binding energy for alkynes and propadiene, and avoid the competitive adsorption of olefins and paraffins, which is verified by breakthrough tests, single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments, and simulation studies. The responsive properties to different stimuli endow materials with multiple regulation methods and broaden the boundaries of the applicability of porous materials to challenging separations.
Gas Separation Based on Ionic Liquids

Abstract:In recent years, ionic liquids have attracted considerable interests in the field of gas separation, due to their selective dissolution of certain gases, nearly non-volatility and tunable property and structure. In this article, the solubilities of CO2, SO2, H-2 O-2, CO, N-2 Ar, Xe and short-chain alkanes, alkenes, alkynes in ionic liquids are summarized. The mechanism and the qualitative relationship between gas solubility and the structure of ionic liquid are introduced. Functionalized ionic liquids containing basic groups such as amino and guanidine have high performance to capture CO2 and SO2. The solubilities of alkenes in ionic liquids can be improved by adding unsaturated groups in ionic liquids via pi-pi interaction, and the solubility of alkynes in ionic liquids increases with increasing hydrogen-bond basicity of ionic liquids. The progress involving molecular simulation of ionic liquid/gas binary system, correlation models of gas solubility, and gas separation based on immobilized ionic liquids are introduced and summarized. Finally, the existing problems and development directions in the future of gas separation using ionic liquids are discussed.
Process optimization of CO2membrane and cryogenic hybrid separation

Abstract:Separation and purification of carbon dioxide is current research hotspot. With increasing needs for environmental protection, traditional single separation techniques are difficult to meet these discharge specifications. Integration of multiple separation methods has gradually gained research attention. Separation and recovery of carbon dioxide in the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) process was studied by process simulation and polynomial state equations were obtained for such system. Furthermore, a mathematical superstructure model of hybrid membrane - cryogenic flash distillation was established. Optimal separation sequence was found by targeting minimal annual cost at pre-set lower specification of product purity and recovery. The optimized process show excellent separating performance of membrane after flash configuration and multistage membrane structure. Compared to control process, optimized process not only guarantees product recovery and purity but also decreases total annual cost by almost 27%.
Experimental investigation of CO2 separation by adsorption methods in natural gas purification

Abstract:CO2 separation for natural gas purification by the adsorption method was studied in detail using volumetric adsorption apparatus. The crystalline phase and microstructure of the experimental sample were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Micromeritics ASAP 2020 instrument. The XRD pattern proves that the experimental sample consists of 13X zeolites. The SEM images show that the 13X zeolites expose a large number of micro-channels on the surface of the particles. The microporous volume is 0.22cm3(STP)/g. The ideal swing frequency for the adsorption tank can improve the adsorption performance of an adsorbent compared with a static adsorption tank. The pure CO2 adsorption experimental data agrees well with the extended Langmuir model. The Langmuir-Freundlich model correlates the CO2/CH4 mixture adsorption experimental data fairly well. The relative errors between the simulated results and the experimental data are very little, which indicates that these fitted models are correct. The average selectivity of CO2/CH4 in a static and swing adsorption tank are, respectively, 3.57 and 3.93, considerably higher than 1, indicating preferential CO2 adsorption over CH4 in CO2/CH4 mixtures. This also shows that the swing can improve CO2 separation for natural gas purification. For the three types of motion status, the temperature of the adsorption tank increased in the order swing 2>swing1>static state for pure CO2 adsorption in 13X zeolites. The temperature variation decreased as the pressure increased. The amplitude and time of temperature variations in the adsorption tank can explain the adsorption capacity and adsorption speed. This research will improve the efficiency of offshore natural gas exploitation, and will affect the optimization of energy structures.

Abstract:Carbon hydrocarbon compounds, especially low-carbon hydrocarbons (C1–C3), are vital raw materials in the petrochemical industry, but their efficient separation has great challenges due to their similar molecular structures and properties. In contrast to traditional low-temperature distillation and absorption separation technologies, selective adsorption employing porous materials as adsorbent has the advantages of low energy consumption, high efficiency, and high selectivity, indicating broad application possibilities in the field of low-carbon hydrocarbon separation. In this paper, the recent progress in the separation and purification of hydrocarbon mixtures by means of the two kinds of porous materials (metal–organic frameworks and molecular sieves) that have been widely used in recent years is reviewed, including purification of methane and separation of ethylene/ethane, propylene/propane, and some high-carbon hydrocarbon isomers. The structure–activity relationships between their chemical composition, structural characteristics, and separation performance are discussed to understand the separation mechanism. In conclusion, the issues encountered in the application of metal–organic frameworks and molecular sieves in the separation of low-carbon hydrocarbons are discussed in light of the current context of “carbon neutrality”.

Abstract:Adsorptive separation of light hydrocarbons by porous solids provides an energy-efficient alternative to state-of-the-art cryogenic distillation. However, an optimal balance between the cost, performance and stability of the sorbent material is yet to be achieved for industrial applications. Here, we report the efficient separation of C2 and C3 hydrocarbons by a faujasite zeolite (Na-X, Si/Al = 1.23). A tandem configuration of two fixed-beds packed with Na-X affords complete dynamic separation of the ternary mixture of C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 (1/49.5/49.5; v/v/v) under ambient conditions. Pressure-swing desorption on the latter fixed-bed gives ethylene (> 99.50%, 1.80 mmol g-1) and ethane (> 99.99%, 1.41 mmol g?1). In situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction revealed the binding sites for C(2)H(2 )and C(2)H(4)in Na-X. Abstract:Hydrocarbons, including methane, ethene, propene, para‐xylene and ortho‐xylene, are of great significance in current and future chemical industry. Separation and purification of hydrocarbons, such as methane/nitrogen, ethene/ethane, propene/propane and separation of C8 aromatics, are important processes. Nevertheless, traditional distillation‐based separation accounts for a large portion of the world's energy consumption. Porous materials‐based separation is believed to be a promising alternative technology with lower energy consumption and operational cost. This review focuses on the developments of the adsorptive separation of methane/nitrogen, ethene/ethane, propene/propane mixtures as well as on the separation of C8 aromatics (i.e., xylene isomers) with a wide variety of materials, including carbonaceous materials, zeolites, metal‐organic frameworks and porous‐organic frameworks. Some recent important developments for these adsorptive separations are also highlighted. The advantages and disadvantages of each material category are discussed and guidelines for the design of improved materials are proposed. Furthermore, challenges and future developments of each material type and separation processes are discussed.

Abstract:Adsorptive separation based on porous solid adsorbents has emerged as an excellent effective alternative to energy-intensive conventional separation methods in a low energy cost and high working capacity manner. However, there are few stable mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for efficient purification of methane from other light hydrocarbons in natural gas. Herein, we report a series of stable mesoporous MOFs, MIL-101-Cr/Fe/Fe-NH2, for efficient separation of CH4 and C3H8 from a ternary mixture CH4/C2H6/C3H8. Experimental results show that all three MOFs possess excellent thermal, acid/basic, and hydrothermal stability. Single-component adsorption suggested that they have high C3H8 adsorption capacity and commendable selectivity for C3H8 and C2H6 over CH4. Transient breakthrough experiments further certified the ability of direct separation of CH4 from simulated natural gas and indirect recovery of C3H8 from the packing column. Theoretical calculations illustrated that the van der Waals force proportional to the molecular weight is the key factor and that the structural integrity and defect can impact separation performances.

Abstract:Driven by the goal of carbon neutrality, the new development pattern of the refining and chemical industry has changed from distillate processing to component processing. A key difficulty in precise separation of oil and gas is a low separation efficiency, which could be attributed to poor gas-liquid mass transfer efficiency and poor match between selectivity and solubility. While in the oriented conversion of oil, low yield of the target product and short catalyst life are key constraints, since complex parallel sequence reactions in conversion process is difficult to control. Therefore, our research group has focused on the main line of "precise separation and oriented conversion of oil and gas", to cope with a key chemical common problems of "mass transfer and reaction" in the process of "separation and conversion" of C3-C20 hydrocarbon components, we solved two scientific problems of "intermolecular force" in separation process and "structure-activity relationship of catalytic materials" in conversion process. It has realized the goal of "quality upgrade, product transformation and optimal utilization" mainly for production of high-quality fuel and chemical feedstocks. And it has contributed to form a new pattern of refining and chemical integration of "high-qualified oil and gas as well as high-value chemicals".

Abstract:The separation of methane (CH4) and nitrogen (N2) is a significant challenge to the enrichment and utilization of low concentration CH4 due to the similarity in the physical and chemical properties of the two molecules. In this work, we investigated the separation of CH4 from N2 using 100 kg of a new ionic liquidic zeolite (ILZ) material in a 6‐bed pilot‐scale pressure swing adsorption process. Feed gases with CH4 concentrations of 5.0% and 16.1% were upgraded to 11.5% and 34.6%, respectively, with CH4 recoveries higher than 80%. The pilot test results were used to anchor a numerical model that then allowed the efficient investigation of multiple operational parameters including desorption pressure and feed gas flow rates. The numerical model produced CH4 concentrations for both product streams consistent with those measured in the pilot experiments, with root mean square deviations below 2%. The modeling results revealed that sufficiently low desorption pressures can unexpectedly lead to lower heavy product purities under limited feed gas flow conditions. Furthermore, the optimum feed gas flow rate under which maximum heavy product purity is achieved increases with lower desorption pressure. The maximum CH4 concentrations increased from 31.8% to 41.5%, as desorption pressures decreased from 22.8 to 12.2 kPa for optimum feed flow rates between 78.2 and 105.5 mol/h. We also demonstrate a method of process optimization based on the bed capacity ratio, ℂ, which provides a scale‐independent measure of the degree to which the column is being used effectively. By varying feed flow rate and/or desorption pressure, ℂ values between 0.2 and 0.8 were explored, with maxima in the combined separation performance metric (methane recovery) × (methane purity) occurring for values of ℂ in the range 0.29–0.36. This separation performance optimization by adjusting ℂ provides an effective strategy for integrating and understanding the impact of multiple operating parameters.

Abstract:The separation of light hydrocarbon mixtures (C1–C3) generated from petrochemical industry is vital and challenging process for obtaining valuable pure chemical feedstocks. In comparison to the energy intensive conventional separation technologies (cryogenic distillation, absorption and hydrogenation), the adsorptive separation is considered as a low energy cost and high efficiency process. Porous carbons have been demonstrated as excellent adsorbents for the separation of light hydrocarbons, owing to their designable structure and tailorable properties. This review summarizes the recent advances of using porous carbons as adsorbents for the separation of light hydrocarbons, including methane/nitrogen, methane/alkane, methane/carbon dioxide, ethylene/ethane and propylene/propane. We discuss the separation mechanisms and highlight the material features including pore structure, surface chemistry and target molecular properties that determine the separation performance. Furthermore, the challenges and development direction associated with carbonaceous adsorbents for light hydrocarbon separation are discussed, meanwhile the guidelines for the design of porous carbons are proposed.

Abstract:Light hydrocarbons (LHs) separation is an important process in petrochemical industry. The current separation technology predominantly relies on cryogenic distillation, which results in considerable energy consumption. Adsorptive separation using porous solids has received widespread attention due to its lower energy footprint and higher efficiency. Thus, tremendous efforts have been devoted to the design and synthesis of high-performance porous solids. Among them, porous carbons display exceptional stability, tunable pore structure, and surface chemistry and thus represent a class of novel adsorbents upon achieving the matched pore structures for LHs separations. In this review, the modulation strategies toward advanced carbon-based adsorbents for LHs separation are firstly reviewed. Then, the relationships between separation performances and key structural parameters of carbon adsorbents are discussed by exemplifying specific separation cases. The research findings on the control of the pore structures as well as the quantification of the adsorption sites are highlighted. Finally, the challenges of carbonaceous adsorbents facing for LHs separation are given, which would motivate us to rationally design more efficient absorbents and separation processes in future.

Accelerating the Discovery of Acid Gas-Selective MOFs for Natural Gas Purification: A Combination of Machine Learning and Molecular Fingerprint

Abstract:The rational construction of high-performing MOF adsorbents for H2S/CO2/CH4 separation is essential for natural gas (NG) purification. However, trial-and-error experiments usually face significant challenges associated with unclear design routes. Especially the chemical design, which is decisive in geometrical properties and adsorption sites, thus playing substantial roles in molecule separation, has not been comprehensively understood yet. In this work, a combination of machine learning (ML)-assisted computational screening protocol based on similar to 1,000 simulation data and molecular fingerprint was performed to accelerate the discovery of promising MOFs for H2S/CO2/CH4 separation. The reliability of the adopted ML algorithm on our proposed comprehensive separation metric (TNSR) was further verified by another 50 MOFs with a small absolute mean error (AME) of 2.95. Encouragingly, 463 out of over 10,000 unpredicted MOFs were rapidly identified using the developed ML -assisted screening protocol. Among them, five additional top-performing MOFs (TNSR > 65) were successfully located, with the best one showing a TNSR of 82.39, 5-9 times higher than some well-known adsorbents (i.e. CuBTC, ZIF-69) at the same condition. During establishing the screening protocol, the chemical characteristics particular to the high-performing MOFs and the different effects of aromatic and alkyl ligands on separation were understood in detail. Different from the previous work, it was found that MOFs with transitional metals can also be unfavorable, mainly due to the specific metal coordination formed under various conditions. This work emphasizes the importance of chemical design and aims to provide an accurate screening strategy to discover promising MOFs for natural gas purification.
Improving Ethane/Ethylene Separation Performance under Humid Conditions by Spatially Modified Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks

Abstract:Gas separation performances are usually degraded under humid conditions for many crystalline porous materials because of the lack of water stability and/or the competition of water vapor toward the interaction sites (e.g., open metal sites). Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are suitable candidates for practical applications in gas separation because of their excellent physical/chemical stabilities. However, the limitation of substituent positions in common ZIFs has prevented extensive pore engineering to improve their separation performance. In a type of gyroidal ZIFs with gie topology, the Schiff base moiety provides additional substituent positions, making it possible to modify the spatial arrangement of hydrophobic methyl groups. Herein, a new gyroidal ZIF, ZnBAIm (H2BAIm = 1,2-bis(1-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)ethylidene)hydrazine), is designed, synthesized, and characterized. The spatially modified ZnBAIm exhibits improved thermal/chemical/mechanical stabilities compared to ZnBIm (H2BIm = 1,2-bis((5H-imidazol-4-yl)methylene)hydrazine). ZnBAIm can remain intact up to about 480 °C in a N2 atmosphere and tolerate harsh treatments (e.g., 5 M NaOH aqueous solution at room temperature for 24 h and 190 MPa high pressure in the presence of water). Moreover, the modified pore and window sizes have improved significantly the ethane/ethylene selectivity and separation performance under humid conditions for ZnBAIm. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate efficient separation of a C2H6/C2H4 (50/50, v/v) binary gas mixture under ambient conditions; more importantly, the C2H6/C2H4 separation performance is unaffected under highly humid conditions (up to 80% RH). The separation performance is attributed to combined thermodynamic (stronger dispersion interaction with C2H6 than with C2H4) and kinetic factors (diffusion), determined by density functional theory calculations and kinetic adsorption study, respectively.

Abstract:Petrochemical-related gases, especially light hydrocarbons with 1–8 carbon atoms, are essential industrial feedstocks. However, during steam cracking they inevitably coexist with other by-products in multi-component form. The huge amount of energy consumed by the traditional heat-driven distillation separation process encourages the development of energy-efficient adsorption separation technologies. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are porous sorbents with designable structures, have drawn considerable attention for use in molecular recognition and gas separation. In contrast to the widely studied use of MOFs for binary mixture separation, the separation of multi-component gases is closer to the practical situation in the hydrocarbon industry, but has higher requirements of the MOFs in terms of molecular recognition capability. However, there is a lack of discussion on the use of MOFs for multi-component separation from a structure–function relationship perspective. The present review comprises an extensive summary of current progress in the design of MOFs for multi-component hydrocarbon processes. Such processes include C2 hydrocarbon purification, C1-C4 gas mixture (except for the mixture containing C2 hydrocarbons only) separation, hexane/C8 isomeric hydrocarbon separation, and multi-component aromatic hydrocarbon separation. The different hydrocarbon selectivity capabilities of MOFs and the corresponding separation sequences in these separation scenarios are also highlighted. We appreciate the separation mechanism at a molecular level and emphasize the importance of MOF designability in achieving satisfactory separation performance. Furthermore, the challenges and perspective insights of multi-component gas separation using MOFs are discussed.

Rational Construction of Ultrahigh Thermal Stable MOF for Efficient Separation of MTO Products and Natural Gas

Abstract:Considering the important application foundation of propylene (C3H6) and ethylene (C2H4) production, as well as methane (CH4), in petrochemical industries, this report comprehensively investigated an innovative MOF material (Zn-BPZ-SA) that was synthesized by 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethyl-4,4′-bipyrazole (H2BPZ) and squaric acid (H2SA) for separating methanol-to-olefins (MTO) products (C3H6/C2H4 mixtures) and natural gas (C3H8/C2H6/CH4 mixtures). Zn-BPZ-SA with great resistance toward water and exceptional thermal stability (520 °C), can preferentially adsorb C3H8 and C3H6 rather than C2H6 and C2H4, and in particular, reveals high C3H6 and C3H8 uptakes of 46.6 and 48.0 cm3 g–1 under the crucial low pressure (10 kPa, 298 K). The experimental and simulated transient breakthroughs for C3H6/C2H4 binary mixtures and C3H8/C2H6/CH4 ternary mixtures demonstrated that the MOF can separate these mixtures with long breakthrough time differences, yielding high-purity (>99.95%) products with high productivities: C2H4 (21.9–142.8 L kg–1) and CH4 (34.9–73.0 L kg–1). The excellent separation abilities can be attributed to the rich accessbile O/N and methyl binding sites scattered at the pore surfaces in framework.

Abstract:The separation of light hydrocarbon mixtures and the extraction of C 3 H 8 and C 2 H 6 from natural gas are of significant importance in natural gas purification and upgrading. Microporous carbon adsorbents are promising in light hydrocarbon separation. However, the fabrication of uniform ultramicropores to boost separation selectivity remains challenging. Herein, we fabricated a series of poly(vinylidene chloride)-resin-derived ultramicroporous carbon adsorbents with a relatively uniform pore size (5.2–5.3 Å) by activator-free pyrolysis. The optimal C-PVDC-800 exhibited record-high ideal adsorption solution theory (IAST) selectivity for C 3 H 8 /CH 4 (3387) and C 2 H 6 /CH 4 (75) and Henry’s selectivity for C 3 H 8 /CH 4 (369) among all reported adsorbents under ambient conditions, combined with ultrahigh uptake of C 3 H 8 (3.9 mmol g −1 , 0.05 bar) and C 2 H 6 (2.67 mmol g −1 , 0.10 bar) at low partial pressures and 298 K. More importantly, fast gas adsorption kinetics favorable for fixed-bed adsorption applications was realized. Breakthrough experiments and cycling tests further confirm the superb separation performance of the extraction of C 3 H 8 and C 2 H 6 from natural gas.

Abstract:Separation of gaseous hydrocarbons gets involved in many important industrial processes for manufacturing chemicals, polymers, plastics and fuels, which are performed through cryogenic distillations and are heavily energy-intensive. Adsorption-based gas separation technology by adsorbent materials can potentially fulfill a much energy-efficient gas separation. As a new generation of adsorbent materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been demonstrated to have their great potentials in addressing important gas separations of hydrocarbons. In this review, we outline the uniqueness of MOF adsorbents for their separation application for gaseous hydrocarbons. A variety of microporous MOFs have been developed for separating gaseous hydrocarbons, which have been achieved by fine tuning their pore sizes for high molecular sieving effects and/or immobilizing binding sites on their pore surfaces for their specific recognition of small molecules. We highlight herein recent important progresses in this very important topic, focusing on those for ethylene, propylene, and butadiene separation.
