Abstract:Single-atom photocatalysts inject new vitality into the field of photocatalysis. Moreover, due to their unique properties and advantages, single-atom photocatalysts have tremendous potential to address energy crises and environmental pollution. However, the understanding of single-atom photocatalysts is still incomplete and mostly at an early stage. Therefore, there is an urgent need to summarize the advanced progress of single-atom photocatalysts for energy conversion and environmental remediation. In this review, we first introduce the mechanism of single-atom photocatalysis in environmental remediation and energy conversion. Then, we summarize the synthesis and characterization techniques of single-atom photocatalysts, which are crucial for a deeper understanding of the coordination environment and action mechanism of single-atom photocatalysts. Subsequently, we review the applications of single-atom photocatalysts in environmental remediation and energy conversion. Last but not least, we summarize the current status and challenges of single-atom photocatalysts. We hope that this review will provide new insights into the research of single-atom photocatalysts and promote their further development.

Challenges of implementing e-learning in a Pakistani university

Abstract:The integration of e-learning programs into the educational system has reshaped the process of acquisition and dissemination of knowledge throughout the society. Although numbers of researchers approve of the effectiveness of e-learning integration in terms of the innovation it offers to engage with students does not guarantee the success of e-learning programs. This can be observed in developing countries like Pakistan, which have not yet been able to benefit fully from the advantages of e-learning. Though the importance of this issue is theoretically highlighted in research, empirical evidence is scarce particularly regarding developing countries like Pakistan. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the issues, related to e-learning through the feedback captured from students and provide strategies to successfully overcome the issues. In order to achieve this purpose, a number of issues prevailing in a Pakistani private university were identified through in depth literature review and discussion with the students. The findings demonstrated electricity failure and English proficiency as the most significant barriers to successful integration of e-learning. Abstract:Photocatalysis is a widely recognized green and sustainable technology that can harness inexhaustible solar energy to achieve chemical reactions, offering the opportunity to mitigate environmental issues and the energy crisis. Photocatalyst with wide spectra response and rapid charge transfer capability is the crucial for highly-efficient photocatalytic activity. Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs), as an emerging atomic-level material, have attracted great interests due to the ultrasmall size, unique atomic stacking way, abundant surface active sites, and quantum confinement effect. Especially, the molecule-like discrete electronic energy level endows it small-band-gap semiconductor behavior that can be photoexcited to generate electrons and holes to participate photoredox reaction. In addition, metal NCs exhibits strong light-harvesting ability in relative wide spectra from UV to near IR region and the diversity of optical absorption property can be precisely regulated by composition and structure. These merits make metal NCs ideal candidates for photocatalysis. In this review, the recent advances in atomically precise metal NCs for photocatalytic application are summarized, including photocatalytic water splitting, CO2 reduction, organic transformation, photoelectrocatalytic reaction, N2 fixation and H2O2 production. In addition, the strategy for promoting photostability and charge transfer and separation efficiency of metal NCs are highlighted. Finally, the perspective on challenges and opportunities for NCs-based photocatalysts are provided.

Abstract:Photocatalysis appears to be an appealing approach for environmental remediation including pollutants degradation in water, air, and/or soil, due to the utilization of renewable and sustainable source of energy, i.e., solar energy. However, their broad applications remain lagging due to the challenges in pollutant degradation efficiency, large-scale catalyst production, and stability. In recent decades, massive efforts have been devoted to advance the photocatalysis technology for improved environmental remediation. In this review, the latest progress in this aspect is overviewed, particularly, the strategies for improved light sensitivity, charge separation, and hybrid approaches. We also emphasize the low efficiency and poor stability issues with the current photocatalytic systems. Finally, we provide future suggestions to further enhance the photocatalyst performance and lower its large-scale production cost. This review aims to provide valuable insights into the fundamental science and technical engineering of photocatalysis in environmental remediation.

Abstract:Solar energy is a renewable resource that can supply our energy needs in the long term. A semiconductor photocatalysis that is capable of utilizing solar energy has appealed to considerable interests for recent decades, owing to the ability to aim at environmental problems and produce renewal energy. Much effort has been put into the synthesis of a highly efficient semiconductor photocatalyst to promote its real application potential. Hence, we reviewed the most advanced methods and strategies in terms of (i) broadening the light absorption wavelengths, (ii) design of active reaction sites, and (iii) control of the electron-hole (e--h+) recombination, while these three processes could be influenced by remodeling the crystal lattice, surface, and interface. Additionally, we individually examined their current applications in energy conversion (i.e., hydrogen evolution, CO2 reduction, nitrogen fixation, and oriented synthesis) and environmental remediation (i.e., air purification and wastewater treatment). Overall, in this review, we particularly focused on advanced photocatalytic activity with simultaneous wastewater decontamination and energy conversion and further enriched the mechanism by proposing the electron flow and substance conversion. Finally, this review offers the prospects of semiconductor photocatalysts in the following three vital (distinct) aspects: (i) the large-scale preparation of highly efficient photocatalysts, (ii) the development of sustainable photocatalysis systems, and (iii) the optimization of the photocatalytic process for practical application.

Abstract:<p>Porous photocatalysts are promising materials capable of simultaneously adsorbing and oxidizing/reducing target species, showing great potentials in environmental remediation and energy generation. This review offered a comprehensive overview of the recent progress in design, fabrication, and applications of porous photocatalysts, including carbon-based semiconductors, metal oxides/sulfides, metal-organic frameworks, and adsorbent-photocatalyst hybrids. The fundamental understanding of the structure-performance relationships of porous materials together with the in-depth insights into the synergetic effects between adsorption and photocatalysis were presented. The strategies to further improve the photocatalytic activity of porous photocatalysts were proposed. This review would provide references and outlooks of constructing efficient porous materials for adsorptive and photocatalytic removal of pollutants and energy production.</p>

Abstract:Photocatalysis,which is the catalyzation of redox reactions via the use of energy obtained from light sources,is a topic that has garnered a lot of attention in recent years as a means of addressing the environmental and economic issues plaguing society today.Of particular interest are photosynthesis can potentially mimic a variety of vital reactions,many of which hold the key to develop sustainable energy economy.In light of this,many of the technological and procedural advancements that have recently occurred in the field are discussed in this review,namely those linked to:(1) photocatalysts made from metal oxides,nitride,and sulfides;(2) photocatalysis via polymeric carbon nitride(PCN);and(3) general advances and mechanistic insights related to TiO 2 -based catalysts.The challenges and opportunities that have arisen over the past few years are discussed in detail.Basic concepts and experimental procedures which could be useful for eventually overcoming the problems associated with photocatalysis are presented herein.

Abstract:Along with the development of industry and the improvement of people’s living standards, peoples’ demand on resources has greatly increased, causing energy crises and environmental pollution. In recent years, photocatalytic technology has shown great potential as a low-cost, environmentally-friendly, and sustainable technology, and it has become a hot research topic. However, current photocatalytic technology cannot meet industrial requirements. The biggest challenge in the industrialization of photocatalyst technology is the development of an ideal photocatalyst, which should possess four features, including a high photocatalytic efficiency, a large specific surface area, a full utilization of sunlight, and recyclability. In this review, starting from the photocatalytic reaction mechanism and the preparation of the photocatalyst, we review the classification of current photocatalysts and the methods for improving photocatalytic performance; we also further discuss the potential industrial usage of photocatalytic technology. This review also aims to provide basic and comprehensive information on the industrialization of photocatalysis technology.

Abstract:Excessive use of fossil fuels leads to energy shortages and environmental pollution, threatening human health and social development. As a clean, green, and sustainable technology, generation of renewable energy from solar light through photocatalysis has received increasing attention to cope with the impending energy and environmental crisis. The atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with large surface area and abundant low-coordinate surface atoms prove to exhibit enormous potential to attain efficient photocatalytic performance. These 2D ultrathin materials can shorten the transport distance of charge carriers from the interior to the surface, enhance reactants' (e.g. CO2 and H2O) adsorption and activation to lower the energy barrier, promote specific reaction processes and inhibit competitive reactions, and regulate the efficiency and selectivity of the catalytic reaction. This Feature article provides a concise overview of the preparation, catalytic mechanism, strategies for boosting the photoconversion performance, various photocatalytic applications, and characterization techniques of atomically thin 2D semiconductors. The major challenges and opportunities of the ultrathin photocatalysts are also addressed. It is hoped that this review can provide useful guidelines toward further research on 2D nanocatalysts, and inspire practical applications of these unique materials for energy conversion.

Abstract:In recent years, numerous photocatalysts and electrocatalysts have been developed to address energy and environmental issues, however, some properties such as low efficiency and easy charge recombination limit their applications. Hence, it is imperative to design and explore new catalytic techniques that include non‐photoresponsive catalysts. Here, recent advances in exploiting diverse catalytic techniques that can be used in dark environments, including piezocatalysis, thermocatalysis, pyrocatalysis, tribocatalysis and hybrid catalysis (piezocatalysis with pyrocatalysis and tribocatalysis with pyrocatalysis) are summarized. The overall mechanism of each catalytic technique and its applications in different fields such as energy generation, environmental remediation, and carbon dioxide reduction are discussed. Abstract:Solar energy is a green and sustainable clean energy source. Its rational use can alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution. Directly converting solar energy into heat energy is the most efficient method among all solar conversion strategies. Recently, various environmental and energy applications based on nanostructured photothermal materials stimulated the re-examination of the interfacial solar energy conversion process. The design of photothermal nanomaterials is demonstrated to be critical to promote the solar-to-heat energy conversion and the following physical and chemical processes. This review introduces the latest photothermal nanomaterials and their nanostructure modulation strategies for environmental (seawater evaporation) and catalytic (C1 conversion) applications. We present the research progress of photothermal seawater evaporation based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional porous materials. Then, we describe the progress of photothermal catalysis based on layered double hydroxide derived nanostructures, hydroxylated indium oxide nanostructures, and metal plasmonic nanostructures. Finally, we present our insights concerning the future development of this field.

Abstract:Solar energy is a key sustainable energy resource, and materials with optimal properties are essential for efficient solar energy-driven applications in photocatalysis. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent platforms to generate different nanocomposites comprising metals, oxides, chalcogenides, phosphides, or carbides embedded in porous carbon matrix. These MOF derived nanocomposites offer symbiosis of properties like high crystallinities, inherited morphologies, controllable dimensions, and tunable textural properties. Particularly, adjustable energy band positions achieved by in situ tailored self/external doping and controllable surface functionalities make these nanocomposites promising photocatalysts. Despite some progress in this field, fundamental questions remain to be addressed to further understand the relationship between the structures, properties, and photocatalytic performance of nanocomposites. In this review, different synthesis approaches including self-template and external-template methods to produce MOF derived nanocomposites with various dimensions (0D, 1D, 2D, or 3D), morphologies, chemical compositions, energy bandgaps, and surface functionalities are comprehensively summarized and analyzed. The state-of-the-art progress in the applications of MOF derived nanocomposites in photocatalytic water splitting for H2 generation, photodegradation of organic pollutants, and photocatalytic CO2 reduction are systemically reviewed. The relationships between the nanocomposite properties and their photocatalytic performance are highlighted, and the perspectives of MOF derived nanocomposites for photocatalytic applications are also discussed.

Abstract:Photocatalysis, which can directly convert solar energy into chemical energy and simultaneously accomplish solar energy conversion and storage objectives, is regarded as one of the most promising strategies to address the energy supply and environmental degradation issues. In recent decades, great efforts and encouraging achievements are performed in the field of semiconductor photocatalysts. Herein, this progress report summarizes the recent investigations and focuses on the advanced semiconductor-based nanocomposite materials and structures and the novel mechanisms for the photocatalytic solar-to-chemical energy conversion. It begins with discussing basic principles for the establishment of an efficient photocatalysis system and illustrating recent studies on improving the elementary processes of photocatalysis, i.e., photophysics and surface/interface chemistry. Then, it demonstrates how the fundamental principles are utilized to enhance the important energy-conversion-related reactions, such as light-driven water splitting, CO2 reduction, nitrogen fixation, organic photosynthesis, etc. Finally, the report concludes the topic on semiconductor-based nanocomposite photocatalysis along with identifying crucial issues in fundamental studies, challenges in large-scale industrializations, and perspectives in related research fields.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production represents a very promising but challenging contribution to a clean, sustainable and renewable energy system. The photocatalyst material plays a key role in photocatalytic H2 production, and it has proven difficult to obtain corrosion resistant, chemically stable, visible light harvesting and highly efficient photocatalysts, which have their band edges matching the O2 and H2 production levels. Nanoscience and nanotechnology are opening a new vista in the development of highly active, nanostructured photocatalysts with large surface areas for optimized light absorption, minimized distances (or times) for charge-carrier transport, and further favorable properties. Our focus here is on recently developed nanostructured photocatalysts. In particular, the particle size, chemical composition (including dopants), microstructure, crystal phase, morphology, surface modification, bandgap and flat-band potential of the nanophotocatalysts have shown a visible effect on photocatalytic H2 production rates, which may be further increased by adding sensitizers, cocatalysts or scavengers. Finally, potential directions required to push this research field a step further are highlighted.

Abstract:Direct conversion of solar energy into chemical energy in an environmentally friendly manner is one of the most promising strategies to deal with the environmental pollution and energy crisis. Among a variety of materials developed as photocatalysts, the core-shell metal/covalent-organic framework (MOF or COF) photocatalysts have garnered significant attention due to their highly porous structure and the adjustability in both structure and functionality. The existing reviews on core-shell organic framework photocatalytic materials have mainly focused on core-shell MOF materials. However, there is still a lack of in-depth reviews specifically addressing the photocatalytic performance of core-shell COFs and MOFs@COFs. Simultaneously, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive review encompassing these three types of core-shell structures. Based on this, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and useful guidelines for the exploration of suitable core-shell organic framework photocatalysts towards appropriate photocatalytic energy conversion and environmental governance. Firstly, the classification, synthesis, formation mechanisms, and reasonable regulation of core-shell organic framework were summarized. Then, the photocatalytic applications of these three kinds of core-shell structures in different areas, such as H 2 evolution, CO 2 reduction, and pollutants degradation are emphasized. Finally, the main challenges and development prospects of core-shell organic framework photocatalysts were introduced. This review aims to provide insights into the development of a novel generation of efficient and stable core-shell organic framework materials for energy conversion and environmental remediation.
