Abstract:The drag law of particles and droplets in two-phase combustion is a sub-model in simulation of spay and pulverized-coal two-phase combustion. However, in the present CFD simulation, the drag model of non-combusting solid particles in isothermal flows, e.g. the Wallis-Kliachko model was used. This sub-model may lead to important errors in the simulation of two-phase combustion. It is necessary to establish a better drag model for particles and droplets in combustion. Previously, there are paradoxical studies. Early experimental studies reported that combustion increases the drag of coal particles. Some recent numerical studies show that combustion reduces the drag of char particles; in contrast, other numerical studies indicate that combustion increases the drag of char particles. For combusting droplets, different research results are reported, i.e., combustion increases the droplet drag, or reduces the droplet drag, or does not affect the droplet drag. Recent numerical studies of a single combusting droplet and a droplet group indicate that drags of a single combusting droplet and combusting droplet group are much smaller than that of a non-combusting solid particle in isothermal flows. This paper gives a review for some paradoxical studies on the drag of particles and droplets in combustion. It is expect to find a better sub-model.
