Besides, it is noteworthy that β12-B/G has been recently synthesized, further opening the possibility of expanding its use in energy storage. Then the selected target is systematically investigated as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Compared with each monolayer component, multiple lithium-ion adsorption is achieved in the β12-B/G heterostructure, resulting in an ultra-high theoretical specific capacity of 2267 mA h g-1. In addition, a lower diffusion energy barrier indicates faster electron transport and lithium-ion diffusion in the β12-B/G heterostructure. Notably, the multilayer lithium adsorption avoids the formation of dendritic deposits, as evidenced by complete ionization of the cationic layers. Moreover, the disparity in the work functions of the individual layers gives rise to a built-in dipole in β12-B/G, further enhancing the multilayer lithium storage and ion migration. All these results suggest that the construction of borophene-based heterostructures with built-in dipoles is a feasible way to design high-performance LIB anode materials.

Abstract:We study the stability and performance of Li absorption on the composite structure (B80C72) of boron fullerene and graphene by first-principles calculations. Our results show that the Li storage capacity of the composite structure is estimated to be at least Li54B80C72, which is steady with improved dispersibility and electronic conductivity. The composite structure could have the potential application as the anode material of Li-ion batteries with high Li storage capacity and great mechanical property.

Abstract:A theoretical investigation of the hydrogen adsorption on a β12-borophene monolayer and a β12-borophene/graphene bilayer heterostructure is performed to tailor the substrate properties via functionalization to increase its hydrogen (H 2 ) physisorption strength and enhance its gravimetric capacity. The results using the density-functional theory show that the H 2 adsorption energy significantly increases as the substrate changes from monolayer to bilayer heterostructure. This enhancement in H 2 adsorption energy is attributed to the synergetic effects of the interlayer interaction in the heterostructure via analysis of the chemical bonding. The lithium decoration of the bilayer heterostructure has indeed increased both the H 2 adsorption energy and gravimetric capacity. Further enhancement of these latter attributes is shown to be plausible to achieve through the application of an electric field normal to the surface and directed upward toward the molecules. The thermodynamic analysis based on the Langmuir adsorption model finds that the high storage capacity should be maintained high with an effective gravimetric capacity of 13.64 wt% at ambient conditions. Our findings demonstrated that the Li-decorated β12-borophene/graphene bilayer heterostructure should be a promising candidate for efficient hydrogen storage applications.

Abstract:Herein, a double-buffering strategy is presented to boost the lithium storage potential of Fe3O4. Firstly, the skeleton of MIL-100 (Fe) MOF is grown on graphene oxide, as a self-assembled template via in-situ solvothermal approach, which transform into ultrafine, well-dispersed and mesoporous carbon coated Fe3O4 QDs (4 nm) imbedded on reduced graphene oxide (Fe3O4 QDs@C/rG0), by pyrolysis. Each component in such a well-designed porous hierarchical structure significantly contributes to the remarkable enhancement of lithium ion storage performance, leading to high reversible capability with excellent prolonged cyclic stability after 2000 cycles (505 mAh g(-1) at 2.0 A g(-1)). Both, Graphene sheets and mesoporous carbon act as conductive support for anchoring uniform Fe3O4 QDs with confined double buffering for cyclic volume flux. Multi-channels with uniform mesopores in the self-assembled array and 4 nm QDs of Fe3O4 confined in conductive carbon shells were favorable to enhance the interfacial electron/ion transfer, leading to the excellent rate and cycling performance with released volume changes upon Li+ insertion/extraction. The present research work provides a promising outset design and synthesis strategies for metal oxide QDs based nanocomposites, which may also be extended to the other electrode material system.

Abstract:A novel 2D bonding heterostructure consisting of hexagonal borophene monolayer bonding with two blue phosphorene layers was designed theoretically, which possesses high stability, good conductivity and high in-plane stiffness. Subsequently, the heterostructure as an anchor material for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries was investigated systematically by using density functional theory. Our results indicate that lithium polysulfides on the heterostructure have appropriate adsorption energies (0.60–2.68 eV) and moderate diffusion barriers (0.09–0.31 eV), which can suppress the "shuttle effect" and inhibit the agglomeration of lithium polysulfides. Therefore, the novel heterostructure can hold great promise as an anchoring material for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:The adsorption of Li ions on boron doped graphene was investigated using a first-principles method. Our results show that, as boron doping turns graphene into an electron-deficient system, more Li ions can be captured around boron doped centers than in pristine graphene. One boron atom doped into graphene (6C ring unit) can adsorb six Li ions, which indicates that boron doped graphene is an efficient Li-ion storage material for lithium batteries. Further investigations show that, under limited conditions, boron doped graphene (BC5) can form Li6BC5 compound after Li-ion adsorption, corresponding to a lithium storage capacity of 2271 mAh/g which is six times that of graphite.

Abstract:Borophene has been predicted to be a potential anode material of lithium-ion batteries because of its high specific capacity, high mechanical strength, and low diffusion barrier. However, borophene cannot be stable without metal substrates, impeding the industrial applications. Hence, using first-principles calculations, we proposed to form van der Waals heterostructures to improve the stability of monocomponent borophene and found graphene to be an alternative substrate for stabilizing borophene as a borophene/graphene (B/G) heterostructure. We find that B/G has a high adsorption energy of Li (-2.959 eV) and a high theoretical specific capacity (1469.35 mA h/g). Also, systematic climbing-image nudged elastic band calculations show that B/G has a low diffusion barrier (0.613 eV), and these properties change with the interlayer distance of B/G, theoretical specific capacity increasing to 1763.22 mA h/g, and diffusion barrier decreasing to 0.353 eV. Our results demonstrate that B/G is a promising anode material and that the electrochemical performance can be changed by adjusting the interlayer
Controlled Growth Lateral/Vertical Heterostructure Interface for Lithium Storage

Abstract:Artificial heterostructures with structural advancements and customizable electronic interfaces are fundamental for achieving high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Here, a design idea for a covalently bonded lateral/vertical black phosphorus (BP)-graphdiyne oxide (GDYO) heterostructure achieved through a facile ball-milling approach, is designed. Lateral heterogeneity is realized by the sp2-hybridized mode P-C bonds, which connect the phosphorus atoms at the edges of BP with the carbon atoms of the terminal acetylene in GDYO. The vertical connection of the heterojunction of BP and GDYO is connected by P-O-C bond. Experimental and theoretical studies demonstrate that BP-GDYO incorporates interfacial and structural engineering features, including built-in electric fields, chemical bond interactions, and maximized nanospace confinement effects. Therefore, BP-GDYO exhibits improved electrochemical kinetics and enhanced structural stability. Moreover, through ex- and in-situ studies, the lithiation mechanism of BP-GDYO, highlighting that the introduction of GDYO inhibits the shuttle/dissolution effect of phosphorus intermediates, hinders volume expansion, provides more reactive sites, and ultimately promotes reversible lithium storage, is clarified. The BP-GDYO anode exhibits lithium storage performance with high-rate capacity and long-cycle stability (602.6 mAh g-1 after 1 000 cycles at 2.0 A g-1). The proposed interfacial and structural engineering is universal and represents a conceptual advance in building high-performance LIBs electrode.

Abstract:Borophene has received much attention due to its unique structure and electronic properties. However, the application of borophene has been limited by the template effect of the growth metal substrate. A stable borophene/graphene (B/G) heterostructure is designed and prepared by the resonance ball milling method and one‐step molding strategy to realize the application of borophene in the lithium‐ion battery for the first time. Graphene serves as a supporting substrate for borophene, and the B/G anode has a better specific capacity and rate performance than the reduced graphene (G) oxide skeleton. By comparing the electrochemical performance of boron powder samples under different ball milling times, it is found that the anode of B/G heterostructure with 6 h boron powder has the largest specific capacity of 192.3 mAh g–1, which is 39% higher than that of the graphene framework. Oxidation functional groups on the surface of borophene are beneficial for the rate performance of the anode. And the influence of the surface functional groups of borophene are analyzed on the diffusion performance through the first principles. It is believed that the B/G has potential for further applications in the field of lithium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:To improve the electrical conductivity and the cycling stability of layered transition metal disulfides (TMDs) as lithium-ion battery anode, graphene@WS2 heterojunction composites are prepared by a facile one-pot process, involving liquid-phase exfoliation of graphene in N-methylpyrrolidone, followed by in-situ growth of WS2 in the graphene dispersion induced by a microwave-assisted solvothermal method. The liquid-phase exfoliated graphene (LEGr) with exceptional atomic structure not only serves as a substrate to couple WS2, but also serves as a mini-current collector for the rapid transport of electrons within the anode. The LEGr-based heterojunction WS2 composites exhibit improved lithium storage performance compared to the counterpart based on graphene oxide (GO), including higher lithium storage capacity, superior rate capability and outstanding cycling stability. This protocol enables processing and construction of advanced TMD heterojunction electrodes based on LEGr using an economical pathway.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) is a rising star shining in the field of electrochemical energy storage because of its ability to react with up to three lithium to form a Li3P compound, giving a theoretical capacity as high as 2596mAhg−1. However, inherent embarrassments such as low electronic conductivity and huge volume expansion drastically deteriorate its ultimate electrochemical performances. Although hybridizing BP with a conductive matrix (e.g., graphene) is a fascinating concept, its extremely high chemical inertness sets obstacles for constructing reliable interfacial interactions with graphene. Herein we report, for the first time, a facile strategy for the molecular level distribution of BP quantum dots (QDs) on nitrogen-doped graphene (N-graphene) nanosheets. The small size of the BP QDs translates into abundant active sites, short lithium diffusion pathways and little mechanical fracture, which mean excellent electrochemical kinetics. The molecular level distribution of these QDs on the N-graphene nanosheets effectively prevents their aggregation upon cycling, thereby preserving the whole structure and maintaining good stability. Besides, the N-graphene nanosheets not only buffer the mechanical stress associated with cycling, but also constitute a conductive network to ensure reversible electron transport. The synergistic superiority of the resulting van der Waals heterostructures is well demonstrated by their superior electrochemical performances, delivering a startlingly high reversible capacity of 1271mAhg−1 at 500mAg−1. We believe this strategy may provide a new route to addressing the capacity deficiency which limits the progress of LIBs towards large-size power tools.
Heterostructure Manipulation Via in Situ Localized Phase Transformation for High-Rate and Highly Durable Lithium Ion Storage.

Abstract:Recently, heterostructures have attracted much attention in widespread research fields. By tailoring the physicochemical properties of the two components, creating heterostructures endows composites with diverse functions due to the synergistic effects and interfacial interaction. Here, a simple in situ localized phase transformation method is proposed to transform the transition-metal oxide electrode materials into heterostructures. Taking molybdenum oxide as an example, quasi-core-shell MoO3@MoO2 heterostructures were successfully fabricated, which were uniformly anchored on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for high-rate and highly durable lithium ion storage. The in situ introduction of the MoO2 shell not only effectively enhances the electronic conductivity but also creates MoO3@MoO2 heterojunctions with abundant oxygen vacancies, which induces an inbuilt driving force at the interface, enhancing ion/electron transfer. In operando synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction has confirmed the excellent phase reversibility of the MoO2 shell during charge/discharge cycling, which contributes to the excellent cycling stability of the MoO3@MoO2/rGO electrode (1208.9 mAh g-1 remaining at 5 A g-1 after 2000 cycles). This simple in situ heterostructure fabrication method provides a facile way to optimize electrode materials for high-performance lithium ion batteries and possibly other energy storage devices.

Abstract:Based on first-principles density functional theory, we show that boron-doping significantly enhances the Li bond strength on the graphene. The transition from s-p hybridization of the Li-graphene complex to p-p hybridization of the Li-coated boron-doped graphene is responsible for the enhanced binding energy. The charge redistribution induced by boron-doping gives rise to two parts of an electrostatic potential energy (one is around the Li atom and the other is parallel to the graphene plane). Four polarized H-2 molecules are attached to one Li atom with an optimal binding energy of similar to 0.13 eV/H-2.
Transition metals doped borophene-graphene heterostructure for robust polysulfide anchoring: A first principle study

Abstract:Borophene shows great potential to be applied in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery as an inhibitor of polysulfides shuttling due to its two-dimensional stable structure and high electronic conductivity. In order to evaluate polysulfides anchoring capability of different configurations of borophenes, density functional theory (DFT) has been employed to calculate the adsorption energies of polysulfides on borophenes of different configurations. The DFT results show that the perfect puckered borophene B0 gives better adsorption performance towards the polysulfides than three defective borophenes (B1, B2 and B3). The DFT calculations also reveal that deformations of borophenes are triggered by the polysulfides adsorption, but the deformation of borophenes can be restrained by forming 2D heterogeneous structure with graphene (B0/G) without compromising the polysulfide immobilization capability. B0/G shows the strongest anchoring capability among the Bx/G composites. Furthermore, to strengthen the adsorption of polysulfides on B0/G, the B0 layer is doped with different transition metals (Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu), and the adsorption energies increase with the increasing reducibility of the doped transition metal atoms. Ti-doped B0/G shows the best performance for suppressing the polysulfides shuttle effect. This work demonstrated that the graphene compositing and transitional metal doping have large impacts on the performance of the borophene for polysulfides anchoring.

By utilizing the difference of electronegativity between boron atoms and carbon atoms, carbon atoms around boron atoms in boron-doped graphene (BG) turn into lithiophilic sites, which can enhance the adsorption capacity to Li+ at the nucleation stage. Consequently, an ultralow overpotential of 10 mV at a current density of 0.5 mA/cm2 and a high average Coulombic efficiency of 98.54% over more than 140 cycles with an areal capacity of 2 mAh/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2 were achieved. BG-Li|LiFePO4 full cells delivered a long lifespan of 480 cycles at 0.5 C and excellent rate capability. This work provides a novel method for rational design of dendrite-free Li metal batteries by regulating nucleation process.
