Abstract:In this study, we enhance the properties of Ti6Al4V alloy through a unique combination of directed energy deposition and layer-by-layer ultrasonic impact peening (UDED). To further customize the mechanical characteristics of the UDEDed Ti6Al4V alloy, we introduce electropulsing treatment (EPT). Our investigation focuses on the impact of varying EPT applied voltage on both the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy. The findings reveal the effectiveness of EPT in tailoring the alloy's mechanical strength and elongation. As the EPT voltage increases, a rise in the volume fraction of fine α phase is observed. This occurs through the splitting of α phase, the regrowth of prior ultra-fine α phase, and the readjustment of distorted α phase. The newly-formed α phase exhibits a low aspect ratio and random misorientation angle. Consequently, the mechanical strength exhibits a decreasing trend, while elongation experiences an increase within the applied voltage range of 100 V to 130 V. The Hall-Patch strengthening mechanism emerges as the primary contributor to the heightened strength observed in the samples processed under 130 V. This study provides valuable insights into the intricate relationship between electropulsing treatment and the microstructural evolution, thereby offering a pathway for tailoring the mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V alloy for specific applications.
