Abstract:The synthesis and utilization of bimetallic catalysts for the hydrogenation of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) to dimethyl cyclohexanedicarboxylates (DMCD) is described in this Article. A variety of techniques, such as low temperature N-2 adsorption-desorption, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and H-2 temperature-programmed desorption were employed to characterize both the supports and the catalysts. The influence of various operational parameters, for example reaction temperature, pressure, and time, on the catalytic performance for the hydrogenation of DMT was systematically analyzed. Under optimized conditions, a DMT conversion of 80% along with DMCD selectivity of 95% were achieved. Furthermore, efforts were also made to probe the catalyst stability. The enhanced catalytic performance of optimized Ru-Ni/CNT catalysts can be attributed to the tight immobilization of the metal particles on the carbon nanotubes and the unique properties of the nitric acid-treated carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:An essential step in developing heterogeneous metal catalysts is to locate their active catalytic sites. In contrast to large metal nanoparticles (NPs) and isolated metal single-atom catalysts (SACs), supported metal clusters (SMCs) possess unique electronic and geometric features that contribute to their improved catalytic properties. In this study, the loading amount of metal Pt was quantified as 2.5 wt %, and the Pt/TiO2 catalysts containing Pt clusters with sizes ranging from 1 to 4 nm were obtained in order to analyze the influence of the Pt cluster size on the dehydrogenation of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (12H-NECZ). The optimal dehydrogenation performance was achieved on the 2.5PT-6.5-3.0 (Pt-1.72) catalyst with an average Pt cluster size of 1.72 +/- 0.20 nm, and there were almost no byproducts. Besides, the kinetic analysis demonstrated that the third net stoichiometric reaction was the rate-limiting step, and the k(3) values were significantly improved with the appropriate Pt cluster size. Furthermore, a volcano plot existed between the Pt cluster sizes and the specific activities, where the Pt-1.72 catalyst occupied the extreme point (4.87 mol(NECZ)/mol(Pt)min). Combining the experimental results and previous reports, it could be concluded that it was important to regulate the Pt cluster size in the 1-2 nm range, so the catalysts with 1-2 nm Pt clusters were focused to be explored. It could be revealed that the different Pt cluster sizes caused the change in the catalyst structures, and only the catalyst with the suitable Pt cluster size could exhibit suitable adsorption and activation capacity for the reactants during 12H-NECZ dehydrogenation, achieving optimal catalytic properties. DFT calculations also confirmed that the suitable Pt cluster size enhanced the efficiency of three dehydrogenation steps, consistent with the experiments.

Abstract:Titania (TiO2) is widely used in the chemical industry as an efficacious catalyst support, benefiting from its unique strong metal-support interaction. Many proposals have been made to rationalize this effect at the macroscopic level, yet the underlying molecular mechanism is not understood due to the presence of multiple catalytic species on the TiO2 surface. This challenge can be addressed with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring well-defined metal oxo/hydroxo clusters for supporting single-site catalysts. Herein we report that the Ti8(μ2-O)8(μ2-OH)4 node of the Ti-BDC MOF (MIL-125) provides a single-site model of the classical TiO2 support to enable CoII-hydride-catalyzed arene hydrogenation. The catalytic activity of the supported CoII-hydride is strongly dependent on the reduction of the Ti-oxo cluster, definitively proving the pivotal role of TiIII in the performance of the supported catalyst. This work thus provides a molecularly precise model of Ti-oxo clusters for understating the strong metal-support interaction of TiO2-supported heterogeneous catalysts.
Metal–Organic Framework Nodes Support Single-Site Nickel(II) Hydride Catalysts for the Hydrogenolysis of Aryl Ethers

Abstract:Herein we report that the Ti8-BDC (MIL-125) (BDC is 1,4-benzenecarboxylate) metal–organic framework (MOF) supports single-site solid NiII-hydride catalyst for the hydrogenolysis of aryl ethers containing α-O-4, β-O-4, and 4-O-5 linkages to exclusively afford hydrocarbons under mild conditions without the addition of a base. The catalytic activity of Ti8-BDC-NiH is highly dependent on the reduction of Ti8(μ2-O)8(μ2-OH)4 nodes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed two key steps of σ-bond metathesis in the catalytic cycle of Ti8-BDC-NiH catalyzed hydrogenolysis. This work highlights the potential of MOF-supported single-site catalysts in aryl ether bond scission and other processes for the efficient production of biofuels and chemical feedstocks.

Abstract:Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) have garnered considerable attention and have undergone extensive studies owing to their high hydrogen storage density and ease of storage and transportation. Research has shown that carbon-supported bimetallic alloys exhibit exceptional performance as catalysts for low-temperature dehydrogenation. Nevertheless, developing high-efficiency carbon support catalysts and revealing the interaction between active metals and support remains challenging but significant. In this work, a cost-effective metal-modified activated carbon (AC) was synthesized and loaded with PdCoO active sites for low-temperature dehydrogenation of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (12H-NECZ) to produce hydrogen. The results show that: (1) Introducing tin (Sn) into the AC support to form highly dispersed PdCoO/Sn2-C improves the pore distribution and size of the catalyst, promoting the dispersion of active metals on the surface; (2) The interface effect between PdCoOx and Sn-C supports effectively regulates the electron transfer inside the catalyst, enhances the synergistic effect between metals, and reduces electron transfer resistance, thereby improving dehydrogenation catalytic activity. The results show that at 140 °C, 12H-NECZ was completely dehydrogenated after 8 h, with a selectivity of 92.5%, while the palladium loading was only 2.2 wt%. This study provides a suitable method for the targeted design of catalysts by altering the electronic effects of supports.

Abstract:N-ethylcarbazole/dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole is a promising candidate for large-scale hydrogen storage, whereas the low dehydrogenation rate and selectivity make the dehydrogenation process full of challenges. In this study, TiO2 nanosheets with high oxygen vacancy concentration were successfully prepared by the simple solvothermal method followed by the annealing-quenching processes, and then the Pt nanoparticles were deposited through impregnation-reduction procedure. Among the Pt/TiO2 catalysts, the 2.5 wt% Pt/TiO2600-3.0 catalyst showed the best dehydrogenation performance with 5.61 wt% H2 release amount and 91% selectivity of NECZ in 180 min at 453 K. It had the highest TOF of 1500.09 min-1 at 453 K up to now. Combined with various characterization methods, it was found that the high quenching temperature was conducive to increase oxygen vacancy concentration on TiO2 before the phase change, and the oxygen vacancies could be occupied by Pt nanoparticles. However, after the phase change of TiO2, the generated rutile TiO2 is difficult to form oxygen vacancies. Meanwhile, the structural-functional relationship of different Pt/TiO2 catalysts for 12HNECZ dehydrogenation was explored. The surface electronic structure of the metal Pt was affected by the strong metal-support interaction (MSI), which was positively correlated with the electron-rich state of metal Pt. Both the increase of oxygen vacancy concentration and crystallinity of TiO2 could contribute to the enhancement of the MSI effect, and the optimized d-band centers of catalysts were beneficial for accelerating dehydrogenation efficiency. The reasonable defects on the catalyst surface could enhance the dehydrogenation kinetics and selectivity of NECZ, confirmed by experiments and DFT calculations.

Abstract:Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) are considered as the promising candidates for large-scale hydrogen storage. The N-ethylcarbazole/dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (NECZ/12H-NECZ) system has received increasing attention due to its excellent comprehensive properties in the hydrogen storage candidates. In this work, the Pt/ SiO2-TiO(OH)2 catalysts are synthesized and show good activity, selectivity and stability for 12H-NECZ dehy-drogenation reaction. Among them, the 2.5 wt% Pt/SiO2-TiO(OH)2 catalyst shows the best dehydrogenation performance with 5.75 wt% H2 release amount and 98 % selectivity of NECZ. Combined with XRD, HRTEM, ATR-FTIR, XPS and EPR analysis, it is found that the oxygen vacancy concentration in Pt/SiO2-TiO(OH)2 is significantly enhanced due to the formation of Si-O-Ti species compared with Pt/SiO2 and Pt/TiO(OH)2, which strengthens the SMSI (strong metal-supporting interaction) effect between metal Pt and support SiO2-TiO(OH)2. The optimized d-band center of catalyst is beneficial for accelerating the sluggish kinetics of the rate-limiting step of the whole dehydrogenation reaction. Furthermore, compared with the results by replacing SiO2 with Al2O3 or CeO2, it is indicated that the introduction of oxides mainly plays the role of regulating the surface electronic state of TiO(OH)2 and increasing the oxygen vacancy concentration.

Abstract:Tin-assisted fully exposed Pt clusters are fabricated on the core-shell nanodiamond@graphene (ND@G) hybrid support (a-PtSn/ND@G). The obtained atomically dispersed Pt clusters, with an average Pt atom number of 3, were anchored over the ND@G support by the assistance of Sn atoms as a partition agent and through the Pt-C bond between Pt clusters and defect-rich graphene nanoshell. The atomically dispersed Pt clusters guaranteed a full metal availability to the reactants, a high thermal stability, and an optimized adsorption/desorption behavior. It inhibits the side reactions and enhances catalytic performance in direct dehydrogenation of n-butane at a low temperature of 450 degrees C, leading to >98% selectivity toward olefin products, and the turnover frequency (TOF) of a-PtSn/ND@G is similar to 3.9 times higher than that of the traditional Pt3Sn alloy catalyst supported on Al2O3 (Pt3Sn/Al2O3).

Abstract:Through systematical experiments, a comparative study was conducted concerning several graphene-supported noble metal catalysts for dehydrogenation of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (12H-NEC). It was found that the catalytic activity of the prepared graphene-supported noble metal catalysts was following the order of Pd > Pt > Rh > Ru > Au for the dehydrogenation process. Pd supported on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) prepared by one-pot in situ synthesis has much more excellent catalytic performance than other kinds of catalysts investigated for comparison, simultaneously the using amount of noble metals can obviously be decreased. To be specific, at 453 K, the final dehydrogenation product catalyzed by the novel catalyst of Pd/rGO is N-ethylcarbazole (NEC) and the process selectivity was increased from 44.77% (commercial Pd/Al2O3) to 97.65%, as well as the dehydrogenation ratio reached 99.14%. In addition, the novel catalyst is also superior to other reported catalysts in terms of dehydrogenation performance of 12H-NEC. Its dehydrogenation activity at 443 and 433 K of Pd/rGO was tested and the catalytic performance keeps stable at the two temperatures. Based on the experimental data, kinetic calculation was carried out and some fundamental parameters regarding reaction kinetics was obtained. (C) 2018 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. In this work, we found that Pt/TiO2 catalysts exhibited better catalytic activity and selectivity compared to Pd/TiO2 and commercial Pd/Al2O3 catalysts in the dehydrogenation of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (12H-NECZ) at 453 K. The catalytic activity of the noble metal catalysts followed the trend of pt/TiO2 > Pd/TiO2 > Rh/TiO2 > Au/TiO2 > Ru/TiO2. Compared with the commercial Pd/Al2O3, Pt/TiO2 greatly improved the selectivity and conversion rate, the reaction time was also shortened. In addition, kinetics calculation was carried out to obtain fundamental reaction parameters. Ultrasmall Pd Nanoparticles Supported on TiO 2 for Catalytic Debenzylation via Hydrogenative C–N Bond Cleavage

Abstract:Heterogeneous Pd has been developed as a well-known catalyst for debenzylation reactions via hydrogenative C–N bond cleavage. However, the extensive applications are still limited owing to a high loading and usage amount of the noble metal. Herein, well-dispersed Pd nanocatalysts over TiO2 were explored with a deposition–precipitation method and characterized by FESEM, physical adsorption, XRD, TEM, and XPS. It was proposed that the ultrasmall and electron-rich Pd nanoparticles can be enhanced over TiO2 rather than C, Al2O3, or SiO2. As representatives, the debenzylations of hexabenzylhexaazaisowurtzitane (HBIW) and tetraacetyldibenzylhexaazaisowurtzitane (TADBIW), which are key steps for the synthesis of CL-20 with the highest energy and density, were selected to evaluate the catalytic performances. It was found that Pd/TiO2 exhibited considerably low usage with high yields in the debenzylation processes of not only HBIW (1 wt ‰) but also TADBIW (4 wt ‰). Meanwhile, the superior catalytic activities can be maintained in the different reaction scales and can be repeated for TADBIW hydrodebenzylation. Abstract:Methylcyclohexane (MCH) has attracted wide attention as liquid organic hydrogen carriers for safe alternative and high gravimetric hydrogen density. Pt 13 cluster with its fascinating structure exhibits excellent performance in cycloalkane dehydrogenation reactions accompanied by balanced C-H cleavage capability. However, the controllable synthesis of stable Pt 13 clusters under reaction conditions remains challenging. Herein, we successfully synthesized low-coordinated Pt 13 clusters anchored by isolated ZnO x nanorafts on silanol-rich self-pillared zeolite nanosheets (SP-S-1). In situ XAFS spectra combined with theoretical calculations revealed that Pt 13 clusters exhibited strong interfacial Pt-Zn bonds and reduced d-band center through orbital hybridization (Zn 3d - Pt 5d), facilitating C-H bond cleavage and toluene desorption. The optimized catalyst exhibited superior MCH dehydrogenation activity and durability, achieving a hydrogen production rate of 3457.9 mmol H2 g Pt -1 min -1 at 400 ̊C and maintaining stable for over 100 hours. This study precisely synthesizes dynamic stable Pt 13 clusters and provides valuable insights into the dehydrogenation mechanism.

Abstract:Well-defined nanoparticles show promise as model catalysts in the quest for new/improved practical catalysts with tunable chemical properties. Here we demonstrate the production, chemical performance, and stability of a new class of model catalyst systems, consisting of size-selected (PdN) nanoclusters supported on (graphite) powders suitable for realistic, test tube reaction conditions. The catalyst powders were synthesized by cluster beam deposition onto planar surface followed by microdicing. Cluster size-dependent (N = 55 to 400) catalytic activity/selectivity was observed in the vapor phase hydrogenation of 1-pentyne. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy of the nanocluster catalysts before and after catalytic measurements revealed the stability of the cluster catalysts against sintering. Larger nanoclusters, e.g., Pd400, showed superior activity, thermal stability, and (very high) selectivity over a period of hours in the reactor.

Abstract:Direct dehydrogenation of alkanes is of great interest but presents a significant challenge in activating C–H bond at a low temperature. Here, we report fully exposed Pd clusters consisting of an average of three Pd atoms on a hybrid nanodiamond-graphene support (denoted as Pd3/) for low-temperature dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene. The obtained fully exposed and atomically dispersed Pd clusters exhibit good catalytic performance (328 mmol gPd–1 h–1 ethylbenzene conversion rate and >99% styrene selectivity) and much enhanced stability under oxygen-free conditions at 350 °C, compared with the previously reported catalysts. The synergetic interaction between adjacent Pd atoms in each cluster evidenced by density functional theory (DFT) calculations guarantees effective activation of C–H bond on ethyl in ethylbenzene and easy desorption of styrene, which is the key for the higher activity than typical Pd single atom and Pd nanoparticle catalysts. Abstract:Precisely designing asymmetrical structures is an effective strategy to optimize the performance of metallic catalysts. Asymmetric Pt clusters were attached to defect-rich porous alumina nanosheets (Pt clu/dp-Al2O3) using a pyrolysis technique coupled with wet impregnation. These Pt-functionalized nanosheets feature a high concentration of active sites, demonstrating remarkable cycling performance and catalytic activity in alkyne diboration. The conversion yield and selectivity can reach up to 97% and 95%, correspondingly. Precisely designing asymmetrical structures is an effective strategy to optimize the performance of metallic catalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogen storage in the form of liquid organic hydrides, especially N-ethylcarbazole, has been regarded as a promising technology for substituting traditional fossil fuels owing to its unique merits such as high volumetric, gravimetric hydrogen capacity and safe transportation. However, unsatisfactory dehydrogenation has impeded the widespread application of N-ethylcarbazole as ideal hydrogen storage materials in hydrogen energy. Therefore, designing catalysts with outstanding performance is of importance to address this problem. In the present work, for the first time, we have synthesized Pd nanoparticles immobilized on carbon nanotubes (Pd/CNTs) with different palladium loading through an alcohol reduction technique. A series of characterization technologies, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) were adopted to systematically explore the structure, composition, surface properties and morphology of the catalysts. The results reveal that the Pd NPs with a mean diameter of 2.6 ± 0.6 nm could be dispersed uniformly on the surface of CNTs. Furthermore, Pd/CNTs with different Pd contents were applied in the hydrogen release of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole. Among all of the catalysts tested, 3.0 wt% Pd/CNTs exhibited excellent catalytic performance with the conversion of 99.6% producing 5.8 wt% hydrogen at 533 K, low activation energy of 43.8 ± 0.2 kJ/mol and a high recycling stability (>96.4% conversion at 5th reuse).

Abstract:Abstract For di-nitroaromatics hydrogenation, it is a challenge to achieve the multi-step hydrogenation with high activity and selectivity due to the complexity of the process involving two nitro groups. Consequently, many precious metal catalysts suffer from low activity for this multi-step hydrogenation reaction. Herein, we employ a fully exposed Pt clusters catalyst consisting of an average of four Pt atoms on nanodiamond@graphene (Pt n /ND@G), demonstrating excellent catalytic performance for the multi-step hydrogenation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene. The TOF (40647 h −1 ) of Pt n /ND@G is significantly superior to that of single Pt atoms catalyst, Pt nanoparticles catalyst, and even all the known catalysts. Density functional theory calculations and absorption experiments reveal that the synergetic interaction between the multiple active sites of Pt n /ND@G facilitate the co-adsorption/activation of reactants and H 2 , as well as the desorption of intermediates/products, which is the key for the higher catalytic activity than single Pt atoms catalyst and Pt nanoparticles catalyst.

Abstract:As the candidates for large-scale hydrogen storage, liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) exhibit evident advantages in hydrogen storage density and convenience of storage and transportation. Among them, NECZ (N-ethylcarbazole)/12H-NECZ (dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole) is considered as a typical system with the lower hydrogenation/dehydrogenation temperature. However, the low dehydrogenation efficiency restrict its commercial applications. In this work, the single-layer Ti3C2Tx MXene was employed as the support to load the Pt nanoparticles for the 12H-NECZ dehydrogenation reaction. The effect of transition metals, loading amounts and morphologies of catalysts were analyzed. It was found that the 3 wt% Pt/S–Ti3C2Tx catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance with 100% conversion, 91.55% selectivity of NECZ and 5.62 wt% hydrogen release amount at 453 K, 101.325 kPa for 7 h. The product distributions and kinetics analysis suggested that the elementary reaction from 4H-NECZ to NECZ was the rate-limiting step. The selectivity of NECZ is sensitive to the dehydrogenation temperature. Combined with the XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS, BET and FT-IR results, it could be indicated that the special two-dimension structure of S–Ti3C2Tx and electronic effect between Pt and S–Ti3C2Tx enhanced the dehydrogenation efficiency of 12H-NECZ. The measurements of cyclic dehydrogenation indicated that the Pt/S–Ti3C2Tx catalyst exhibited good stability after 42 h. This work brought a new strategy for the design of efficient catalysts using two-dimensional materials in the applications of the liquid organic storage hydrogen technology.
