Abstract:Uncoated and highly corrosion-resistant stainless steel is the development tendency of the polar plate material in fuel cells. The surface corrosion resistance of uncoated stainless steel depends on the passivation layer Cr2O3. Studying the corrosion mechanism of Cr2O3 on the cathodic and anodic electric fields is beneficial to guide the development of uncoated stainless steel. Polar plate is subjected to harsh operating conditions, such as strong acidic environment and high electrode potential, which results in severe surface corrosion and performance degradation of fuel cells. In the article, the surface corrosion behaviors and mechanisms of uncoated stainless steel on the cathodic and anodic electric fields are studied through the first-principles calculations. However, Cr2O3 does not possess good corrosion resistance in anodic condition. The corrosion resistance of stainless steel is not mainly due to surface oxides. In addition, the effect of thirty-five metallic elements on the corrosion resistance is also studied. The corrosion resistance of Ni, Zn, and Cd-doped Cr2O3 were analyzed in detail. A First-Principles calculation model has been established to study the corrosion current and potential of the bulk phase, and the Ti, W, and Al-doped can enhanced the Fe-dissolution activation energy, corrosion current density and potential significantly.
