Abstract:Polyamide 4 (PA4) has garnered considerable attention due to its fully bio-based origin and biodegradability as a high-performance polyamide. Nevertheless, thermal degradation during the melting process impedes thermal processing, thereby constraining its potential for engineering plastics applications. To clarify the thermal degradation reactions of PA4 amidst intricate physical and chemical transformations, establishing a theoretical foundation for the thermal stability modification, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of PA4 thermal degradation coupled with crystallization, considering kinetics and reaction mechanisms. Calculation of reaction activation energies and mechanism functions revealed that PA4 pyrolysis is a two-stage compound process, with distinct degradation mechanisms attributed to the crystalline and amorphous regions. Additionally, the thermal degradation mechanism of the PA4-CaCl2 composite system at varying crystallinity levels was illustrated. The incorporation of Ca strengthens intermolecular forces in the samples, leading to an increased overall stability. Simultaneously, a notable alteration in the reaction mechanism was observed in the crystalline zone lacking the Ca phase.

Abstract:On the basis of characteristic polymorphic crystals of poly (butylene adipate) (PBA), the PBA films with a crystal structure were prepared by melt crystallization and annealing treatment. The polymorphic crystal structure, crystal size and crystalline morphology of PBA a crystals with different thermal history were studied by wide angle X-ray diffraction(WAXD), atomic force microscope(AFM) and differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The biodegradation behavior of PBA alpha crystals from different thermal treatments was investigated by following the mass loss with time. The results indicate that the difference of PBA alpha crystals in spatial orientation of polymer chains in the same crystal lattice due to the different thermal history is the essential reason which results in the different biodegradation rates.

Abstract:The thermal degradation behavior of nylon-6 (PA6) and PA6/attapulgite (ATP) nanocomposites was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis under non-isothermal conditions at various heating rates in nitrogen. It is suggested that during thermal degradation, ATP, as a protective barrier, can slow down degradation of polymer, but the catalytic effects of structural water and hydroxyl groups may accelerate the degradation of PA6. The combination of these two effects determined the final thermal stability of nanocomposites. The apparent activation energies of the samples were evaluated by the Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods. The results showed that the presence of ATP adversely affected the thermal stability of PA6. The degradation activation energies of PA6/ATP nanocomposites decreased monotonically with increase in ATP content; thus, it is suggested that the ATP has a disadvantageous effect on the thermal stability of PA6.

Abstract:Polyamide 4 (PA4) has received widespread attention as a bio-based polyamide exhibiting biodegradability. However, the melting and degradation processes of PA4 occur simultaneously, making it difficult to perform thermal processing. To expand the difference between the melting point temperature ( T m ) and the thermal decomposition temperature ( T td ), the crystallization and melting processes of PA4 were investigated to design strategies for regulating the crystallization. The isothermal crystallization and cold crystallization properties of PA4 were investigated with flash DSC. A special self-nucleation phenomenon which slowed the rate of recrystallization has been discovered. It confirms the significant differences in the morphology of crystals generated at differences temperatures. By controlling the crystallization process, the end-of-melt temperature ( T 95 ) was greatly reduced. Nucleation and crystal growth at different temperatures provided a low melting temperature ( T 95 = 246 °C), which was 20 °C lower than that for isothermal crystallization.

Abstract:The thermal degradation of poly(phenylene sulfide sulfone) PPSS was studied by thermogravimetric analysis to determine the reaction mechanism. Several tests were carried out at different heating rates. The influence of the heating rate in dynamic measurements (5-40 degreesC/min) on kinetic parameters, such as activation energies, was also studied. The activation energy of the solid-state process was determined to be 214 kJ/mol using Kissinger's method, which does not require knowledge of the reaction mechanism. The value of the activation energy obtained using Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method was in agreement with that using Kissinger's method. Different reaction mechanisms were used to compare with this value. Also the experimental data were compared to master curves. Analysis of the experimental results suggested that the actual reaction mechanism was a D-n deceleration type. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer was used to study the thermal degradation of polypropylene,polyethylene and poly(methyl methacrylate) at three different heating rates under air atmosphere.The TG and DTG data were employed to reveal the degradation processes and the effect of the heating rates on degradation process of PP,PE and PMMA.The thermal degradation kinetics models were obtained through the Coats-Redfern method,then the degradation mechanisms and effect of oxygen on degradation processes were discussed,at last the reliabilities of the thermal degradation kinetics models were proved by comparing the experimental and calculated TG data.

Abstract:Thermal degradation occurs inevitably during the practical processing of poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) due to its low thermal stability, leading to the deterioration of processability and performance of PPS products. In this study, the structural evolution of PPS during thermal degradation in nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2) atmospheres are investigated systematically via X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and dynamic rheology. A rheological measurement is proposed to distinguish the multi-stage degradation behaviors of PPS efficiently. It is found that the thermal degradation mechanism of PPS differs considerably in N2 and O2 atmospheres. Chain scission is predominant when PPS is heated in N2, while CS and CC crosslinking structures can only be initiated at extremely high temperature. On the contrary, oxidation of PPS is accelerated seriously in the presence of O2. Chain extension and branching reactions are activated even at low processing temperature of PPS, and substantial COC crosslinking structures are created which leads to the sharp increase of melt viscosity. Furthermore, the change of crystallization behaviors after thermal treatments of PPS are also studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The crystalline kinetics of PPS changes significantly during melt processing, which further corroborates the thermal degradation mechanism of PPS.

Abstract:The thermal degradation of flame-retarded ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) composites containing hydrotalcite (LDH) and red phosphorus (RP) are studied by thermogravimetric analysis. Four kinetics analysis models, i.e., the Kissinger method, the Flynn-Wall method, the Friedman method, and the Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) method, are used to study the thermal degradation kinetics of the EVA/LDH composites. The apparent activation energy (Ea) data calculated from the four methods are compared. The Ea results indicate that the addition of LDH and RP affects mainly the first thermal degradation stage of EVA.

Abstract:The thermal degradation of poly(arylene sulfide sulfone)/ N -methylpyrrolidone (PASS/NMP) crystal solvate was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and was compared with pure PASS in order to determine the way in which the formation of the crystal solvate affected the thermal properties of the polymer. The activation energy of the solid state process was determined using Kissinger’s method, which does not require knowledge of the reaction mechanism (RM), to be 174.18 kJ/mol which was lower than that for pure PASS ( E = 214 kJ/mol). The study of master curves together with interpretation of integral methods, allows confirmation that the thermal degradation mechanism for PASS in the crystal solvate system is a decelerated R n type, which is a solid-state process based on a phase boundary controlled reaction, in the conversion range considered. Whereas, the pure PASS follows a decelerated D n thermodegradation mechanism in the same conversion range.

Abstract:The thermal degradation of a phosphate methacrylate polymer was monitored by in-situ FTIR, XPS, XRD and Raman measurements to investigate the variation in chemical structure and element contents, as well as the carbon structure of the final char formed after burning. The results show that the phosphate group decomposes easily in the range 200–250 °C. The degraded products further react with aromatic polynuclear hydrocarbons, formed above 270 °C to give phosphorus-carbon complexes. These complexes finally condense to form a graphite-like structure with an interplanar distance of 3.62Å.

Abstract:For carbon fiber epoxy resin used in aerostructure, thermal degradation mechanism and kinetics play an important role in the evaluation of thermal response and combustion characteristics. However, the thermal decomposition process and mechanism are difficult to unify strictly due to the complexity of the components from different suppliers. In the present study, a product of carbon fiber epoxy resin made by AVIC (Aviation Industry Corporation of China) composite corporation is examined to identify its thermal degradation mechanism and pyrolysis products by measurements, including simultaneous thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, establish the kinetic model by Kissinger/Friedman/Ozawa/Coats-Redfern methods. The results show thermal degradation occurs in three steps under the inert atmosphere, but in four steps under air atmosphere, respectively. The first two steps in both environments are almost the same, including drying, carbon dioxide escape and decomposition of the epoxy resin. In the third step of inert atmosphere, phenol is formed, methane decreases, carbon monoxide basically disappears and carbon dioxide production increases. However, in air, thermal oxidation of the carbonaceous residues and intermolecular carbonization are observed. Furthermore, thermal degradation reaction mechanism submits to the F4 model. These results provide fundamental and comprehensive support for the application of carbon fiber epoxy resin in aircraft industry.

Abstract:Blended a novel self-synthesized phosphorus-containing flame retardant DPWDF with PC/ABS.The thermal stability of PC/ABS and flame retarded PC/ABS was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) in air.The thermal degradation kinetics of PC/ABS and flame retarded PC/ABS was studied by Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method.Results show that DPWDF decreases the initiate decomposition temperature of PC/ABS but enhances its char residue at high temperature;the active energy of flame retarded PC/ABS is lower than that of PC/ABS before the conversion of 70% while it is higher than that of PC/ABS after the conversion of 70%.It revealed the condensed phase mechanism of flame retardant.

Abstract:Tri(acryloyloxyethyl)phosphate (TAEP) was blended in different ratios with a commercial epoxy acrylate to obtain a series of UV curable flame retardant resins. The thermal oxidative degradation mechanism of their cured films in air was studied by thermogravimetric analysis and in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The cured film with TAEP addition showed improved thermal stability at elevated temperature with higher char yield. The kinetics of their thermal decomposition were evaluated by Kissinger, Friedman and Vachuska–Voboril methods. The results showed that the activation energies of the blends were lower than that of pure epoxy acrylate at lower degree of degradation, whereas higher activation energies were obtained at higher degree of degradation.

Abstract:The thermal stability of latent resin systems, cycloaliphatic epoxy/4,4′-dihydroxydiphenylsulfone/aluminum complexes, was investigated by dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. Experiments were conducted under non-isothermal condition in a nitrogen atmosphere at the heating rate of 10, 20, 30 and 40 °C/min, respectively. TG curves showed that, in the temperature range of 25 to 600 °C, the stability of the resin systems could be enhanced by increasing the length of the aliphatic chain in the initiator. Both the Kissinger method and the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall method were employed to calculate activation energies of the decomposition reaction, and the values obtained from the two methods were compared. Moreover, the corresponding reaction mechanism was identified by the Achar differential method and the Coats-Redfern integral method. The experimental results showed that these four methods were reliable and effective to study the kinetics of the thermal decomposition reaction; and the most probable thermal decomposition mechanism of the resin systems we proposed was found to comply with Mampel power law ( m =1).

Abstract:Tri(acryloyloxyethyl) phosphate (TAEP) and di(acryloyloxyethyl)ethyl phosphate (DAEEP) were synthesized from phosphorus oxychloride and hydroxylethyl acrylate and used as flame retardant multifunctional monomers for UV curable systems. The UV cured TAEP and DAEEP films have limiting oxygen indexes of 36 and 29, respectively. Their thermal behaviours were studied by thermogravimetric analysis, and they show three characteristic degradation temperature regions, attributed to the decomposition of phosphate, thermal pyrolysis of acrylate side chains, and decomposition of unstable structures in char, respectively. This was further demonstrated by in situ Fourier-transform infrared and direct pyrolysis/mass spectrometry measurements, and monitored by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. As flame-retardant mechanism it is proposed that the degraded products of phosphate form poly(phosphoric acid), which further catalyses the breakage of carbonyl groups to form an intumescent char, preventing the samples from further burning.
Effects of Crystallinity and Branched Chain on Thermal Degradation of Polyethylene: A SCC-DFTB Molecular Dynamics Study

Abstract:As a widely used plastic, the aging and degradation of polyethylene (PE) are inevitable problems, whether the goal is to prolong the life of PE products or address the issue of white pollution. Molecular simulation is a vital scientific tool in elucidating the mechanisms and processes of chemical reactions. To obtain the distribution and evolution process of PE's thermal oxidation products, this work employs the self-consistent charge–density functional tight binding (SCC-DFTB) method to perform molecular simulations of the thermal oxidation of PE with different crystallinity and branched structures. We discovered that crystallinity does not affect the thermal oxidation mechanism of PE, but higher crystallinity makes PE more susceptible to cross-linking and carbon chain growth, reducing the degree of PE carbon chain breakage. The branched structure of PE results in differences in free volumes between the carbon chains, with larger pores leading to a concentrated distribution of O2 and chemical defects subsequently formed. The breakdown of PE is slowed down when chemical defects are localized in low-density regions of the carbon chain. The specifics and mechanism of PE's thermal oxidation are clearly revealed in this paper, which is essential for understanding the process in depth and for the development of anti-aging PE products.

Abstract:Thermal degradation of PMMA has been studied with gravimetric analysis. The effects of heating rate, atmosphere and size of PMMA on the reaction have been investigated. The reaction order in N2 is 1 and the average activation energy is 195.36 kJ/mol. Reaction order in O2 is 1.5 at the beginning and 1 at the later stage. The division of temperature by reaction order is varied with heating rate. The higher the heating rate is, the bigger the range of the temperature of 1.5 is.

Abstract:The thermal degradation behaviors of polycarbonate/polymethylphenylsilsesquioxane (FRPC) composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under isothermal conditions in nitrogen atmosphere. The isothermal kinetics equation was used to describe the thermal degradation process. The results showed that activation energy (E), in the case of isothermal degradation, was a quick increasing function of conversion (α) for polycarbonate (PC) but was a strong and decreasing function of conversion for FRPC. Under the isothermal condition, the addition of polymethylphenylsilsesquioxane (PMPSQ) retardanted the thermal degradation and enhanced the thermal stability of PC during the early and middle stages of thermal degradation. It also indicated a possible existence of a difference in nucleation, nuclei growth, and gas diffusion mechanism in the thermal degradation process between PC and FRPC. Meanwhile, the addition of PMPSQ influenced the lifetime of PC, but the composite still met the demand in manufacturing and application.

Abstract:The thermal degradation of porous corn starch was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. This measurement was processed in nitrogen atmosphere under different heating rates of 5, 10, 20 and 30 K×min-1. The experimental data were processed by OZAWA, FRIEDMAN and simultaneous thermal analysis methods and the activation energies calculated were 165.63, 174.89 and 187.80 kJ×mol-1, respectively. The reaction order was 0.5~1 calculated by the simultaneous thermal analysis method and reaction mechanism function was [-ln(1-α)]1/2 obtained from the Coats-Redfern method.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polyphosphate ester (HPPE) and phenolic melamine (PM) were blended in different ratios with a commercial epoxy resin to obtain a series of flame retardant resins. The thermal decomposition mechanism of their cured products in air was studied by thermogravimetric analysis and in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The degradation behaviours of epoxy resins containing various flame retardant components were found to be greatly changed. The incorporation of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds improved the thermal stability at elevated temperature. The kinetics of thermal decomposition was evaluated by Kissinger method, Flynn–Wall–Ozawa method and Horowitz–Metzger method. The results showed that the activation energy at lower degree of the degradation decreased by the incorporation of flame retardant components, while increased at higher degree of the degradation.
