Abstract:Studying the influence of the shale bedding angle and the angle between the shale bedding and the loading direction on the rock-breaking characteristics is highly important for proposing scientific methods or tools for speeding up and improving the rock-breaking efficiency of deep shale reservoirs. Shale specimens with varying bedding and impact angles were heated to 200 °C and subjected to different cooling treatments. Dynamic tests were conducted on the rocks, and the dynamic tensile properties of the thermal-treated shale under three cooling treatments were analyzed. A high-speed camera was used to observe the failure patterns of the shale specimens under different conditions. Via 3D scanning, the differences in the failure degrees of the shale fracture surfaces were quantified and used to study the variations in the fracture surface strength, bedding effect and failure stress when shale with different angles undergoes tensile failure under impact loading. In accordance with the Mohr–Coulomb criterion, the mechanism of the influence of bedding angle and impact angle on shale failure under impact loading was revealed. Based on these findings, the tensile strength of shale decreases slowly as the bedding angle increases from 0 to 60°, and decreases rapidly as the bedding angle increases from 60 to 90°. In contrast, the tensile strength increases rapidly with impact angle increases from 0 to 30°, and increases slowly with an impact angle ranging from 30 to 90°. Shale specimens with different bedding angles and impact angles will fail along the loading direction and bedding direction. In addition, the bedding effect coefficient λ was proposed to characterize the bedding effect of shale with different angles from two aspects of strength and failure pattern. When the bedding angle is θ = 90° and the impact angle is φ = 0°, the bedding effect coefficient is the largest. At this time, the bedding effect is most obvious. Moreover, the obtained findings offer a reliable theoretical basis and engineering reference for improving the compatibility of percussion drilling technology and deep shale reservoirs.
