Abstract:On the atomic scale, matter obeys the rules of quantum mechanics which are quite different from the classical rules that determine the properties of conventional computers. Today's advanced lithographic techniques can etch logic gates and wires less than a micron across onto the surfaces of silicon chips. Soon they will yield even smaller parts and inevitably reach a point where logic gates are so small that they are made out of only a handful of atoms. So, if computers are to become smaller in the future, new, quantum technology must replace or supplement what we have now. This article provides a grand overview of quantum information theory from the concept of quantum bits (qubits) to entanglement to quantum computation to quantum cryptography.

Abstract:This is a brief review of the experimental and theoretical quantum computing. The hopes for eventually building a useful quantum computer rely entirely on the so-called "threshold theorem". In turn, this theorem is based on a number of assumptions, treated as axioms, i.e. as being satisfied exactly. Since in reality this is not possible, the prospects of scalable quantum computing will remain uncertain until the required precision, with which these assumptions should be approached, is established. Some related sociological aspects are also discussed. .

Abstract:The quest for quantum advantage, wherein quantum computers surpass the computational capabilities of classical computers executing state-of-the-art algorithms on well-defined tasks, represents a pivotal race in the domain of quantum computing. NISQ (Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum) computing has witnessed remarkable advancements, culminating in significant milestones on the journey towards the realization of universal fault-tolerant quantum computers. This transformative turning point, known as quantum supremacy, has been achieved amid a series of breakthroughs, signifying the dawn of the quantum era. Quantum hardware has undergone substantial integration and architectural evolution, contrasting with its nascent stages. In this review, we critically examine the quantum supremacy experiments conducted thus far, shedding light on their implications and contributions to the evolving landscape of quantum computing. Additionally, we endeavor to illuminate a range of cutting-edge proof-of-principle investigations in the realm of applied quantum computing, providing an insightful overview of the current state of applied quantum research and its prospective influence across diverse scientific, industrial, and technological frontiers.

Abstract:Quantum computers take advantage of interfering quantum alternatives in order to handle problems that might be too time consuming with algorithms based on classical logic. Developing quantum computers requires new ways of thinking beyond those in the familiar classical world. To help in this thinking, we give a description of the foundational ideas that hold in all of our successful physical models, including quantum theory. Our emphasis will be on the proper interpretation of our theories, and not just their statements. Our tact will be to build on the concept of information, which lies central to the operation of not just computers, but the Universe. For application to quantum computing, the essence of quantum theory is given, together with special precautions and limitations.

Abstract:Abstract The field of quantum computing has grown from concept to demonstration devices over the past 20 years. Universal quantum computing offers efficiency in approaching problems of scientific and commercial interest, such as factoring large numbers, searching databases, simulating intractable models from quantum physics, and optimizing complex cost functions. Here, we present an 11-qubit fully-connected, programmable quantum computer in a trapped ion system composed of 13 171 Yb + ions. We demonstrate average single-qubit gate fidelities of 99.5 $$\%$$ % , average two-qubit-gate fidelities of 97.5 $$\%$$ % , and SPAM errors of 0.7 $$\%$$ % . To illustrate the capabilities of this universal platform and provide a basis for comparison with similarly-sized devices, we compile the Bernstein-Vazirani and Hidden Shift algorithms into our native gates and execute them on the hardware with average success rates of 78 $$\%$$ % and 35 $$\%$$ % , respectively. These algorithms serve as excellent benchmarks for any type of quantum hardware, and show that our system outperforms all other currently available hardware.

Abstract:Quantum computing has tremendous potential to overcome some of the fundamental limitations present in classical information processing. Yet, today's technological limitations in the quality and scaling prevent exploiting its full potential. Quantum computing based on superconducting quantum processing units (QPUs) is among the most promising approaches towards practical quantum advantage. In this article the basic technological approach of IQM Quantum Computers is described covering both the QPU and the rest of the full-stack quantum computer. In particular, the focus is on a 20-qubit quantum computer featuring the Garnet QPU and its architecture, which we will scale up to 150 qubits. We also present QPU and system-level benchmarks, including a median 2-qubit gate fidelity of 99.5% and genuinely entangling all 20 qubits in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state.

Abstract:Quantum computing exposes the brilliance of quantum mechanics through computer science and, as such, gives oneself a marvelous and exhilarating journey to go through. This article leads along that journey with a historical and current outlook on quantum computation that is geared toward computer experts but also to experts from other disciplines as well. It is an article that will bridge the vast gap between classical and quantum computation and open an entering wedge through which one will be able to both bring himself up to speed on quantum computation and, intrinsically, in a straightforward manner, become acquainted with it. We are indeed in luck to be living in an age where computing is being reinvented, and not only seeing history in the making firsthand but, in fact, having the opportunity to be the ones who are reinventing--and that is quite a thought.

Abstract:Basic concepts of quantum theory of information, principles of quantum calculations and the possibility of creation on this basis unique on calculation power and functioning principle device, named quantum computer, are briefly reviewed. The main blocks of quantum logic, schemes of implementation of quantum calculations, as well as some known today effective quantum algorithms, called to realize advantages of quantum calculations upon classical, are concerned. Among them special place is taken by Shor's algorithm of number factorization, Grover's algorithm of unsorted database search and, finally, the most promising in application methods of quantum phenomena simulation, particularly quantum chaos. The most perspective methods of experimental realization of quantum computer, namely nuclear-magnetic resonance and trapped ions realizations, are discussed. Phenomena of decoherence, its influence on quantum computer stability and methods of quantum error correction are described.

Abstract:Abstract An elementary review on principles of qubits and their prospects for quantum computing is provided. Due to its rapid development, quantum computing has attracted considerable attention as a core technology for the next generation and has demonstrated its potential in simulations of exotic materials, molecular structures, and theoretical computer science. To achieve fully error-corrected quantum computers, building a logical qubit from multiple physical qubits is crucial. The number of physical qubits needed depends on their error rates, making error reduction in physical qubits vital. Numerous efforts to reduce errors are ongoing in both existing and emerging quantum systems. Here, the principle and development of qubits, as well as the current status of the field, are reviewed to provide information to researchers from various fields and give insights into this promising technology.

Abstract:The thesis deals with Quantum Algorithms for solving Hard Constrained Optimization Problems. It shows how quantum computers can solve difficult everyday problems such as finding the best schedule for social workers or the path of a robot picking and batching in a warehouse. The path to the solution has led to the definition of a new artificial intelligence paradigm with quantum computing, quantum Case-Based Reasoning (qCBR) and to a proof of concept to integrate the capacity of quantum computing within mobile robotics using a Raspberry Pi 4 as a processor (qRobot), capable of operating with leading technology players such as IBMQ, Amazon Braket (D-Wave) and Pennylane. To improve the execution time of variational algorithms in this NISQ era and the next, we have proposed EVA: a quantum Exponential Value Approximation algorithm that speeds up the VQE, and that is, to date, the flagship of the quantum computation. Abstract:This perspective describes the history, scientific and technology developments of superconducting qubit-based quantum computers, which are currently dominant, particularly with industry vendors. Adopting an engineering viewpoint, it showcases the great diversity of technology options, explains how superconducting qubit chipsets are manufactured, describes some challenges with how qubits are driven by classical electronics, how to improve their fidelities and how their energetic footprint can be optimized. We also briefly describe the current status of so-called NISQ (noisy intermediate scale quantum) computers and the resource estimations to run their potential use cases, particularly for running quantum many-body physics simulations.

Abstract:The intensive pursuit for quantum advantage in terms of computational complexity has further led to a modernized crucial question: {\it When and how will quantum computers outperform classical computers?} The next milestone is undoubtedly the realization of quantum acceleration in practical problems. Here we provide a clear evidence and arguments that the primary target is likely to be condensed matter physics. Our primary contributions are summarized as follows: 1) Proposal of systematic error/runtime analysis on state-of-the-art classical algorithm based on tensor networks; 2) Dedicated and high-resolution analysis on quantum resource performed at the level of executable logical instructions; 3) Clarification of quantum-classical crosspoint for ground-state simulation to be within runtime of hours using only a few hundreds of thousand physical qubits for 2d Heisenberg and 2d Fermi-Hubbard models, assuming that logical qubits are encoded via the surface code with the physical error rate of $p=10^{-3}$. To our knowledge, we argue that condensed matter problems offer the earliest platform for demonstration of practical quantum advantage that is order-of-magnitude more feasible than ever known candidates, in terms of both qubit counts and total runtime.

Abstract:As we begin to reach the limits of classical computing, quantum computing has emerged as a technology that has captured the imagination of the scientific world. While for many years, the ability to execute quantum algorithms was only a theoretical possibility, recent advances in hardware mean that quantum computing devices now exist that can carry out quantum computation on a limited scale. Thus, it is now a real possibility, and of central importance at this time, to assess the potential impact of quantum computers on real problems of interest. One of the earliest and most compelling applications for quantum computers is Feynman's idea of simulating quantum systems with many degrees of freedom. Such systems are found across chemistry, physics, and materials science. The particular way in which quantum computing extends classical computing means that one cannot expect arbitrary simulations to be sped up by a quantum computer, thus one must carefully identify areas where quantum advantage may be achieved. In this review, we briefly describe central problems in chemistry and materials science, in areas of electronic structure, quantum statistical mechanics, and quantum dynamics that are of potential interest for solution on a quantum computer. We then take a detailed snapshot of current progress in quantum algorithms for ground-state, dynamics, and thermal-state simulation and analyze their strengths and weaknesses for future developments.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
