Abstract:Quantum computers are expected to surpass the computational capabilities of classical computers and have a transformative impact on numerous industry sectors. We present a comprehensive summary of the state of the art of quantum computing for financial applications, with particular emphasis on stochastic modeling, optimization, and machine learning. This Review is aimed at physicists, so it outlines the classical techniques used by the financial industry and discusses the potential advantages and limitations of quantum techniques. Finally, we look at the challenges that physicists could help tackle.

Abstract:We discuss how quantum computation can be applied to financial problems, providing an overview of current approaches and potential prospects. We review quantum optimization algorithms, and expose how quantum annealers can be used to optimize portfolios, find arbitrage opportunities, and perform credit scoring. We also discuss deep-learning in finance, and suggestions to improve these methods through quantum machine learning. Finally, we consider quantum amplitude estimation, and how it can result in a quantum speed-up for Monte Carlo sampling. This has direct applications to many current financial methods, including pricing of derivatives and risk analysis. Perspectives are also discussed.

Abstract:Quantum computers are expected to surpass the computational capabilities of classical computers during this decade and have transformative impact on numerous industry sectors, particularly finance. In fact, finance is estimated to be the first industry sector to benefit from quantum computing, not only in the medium and long terms, but even in the short term. This survey paper presents a comprehensive summary of the state of the art of quantum computing for financial applications, with particular emphasis on stochastic modeling, optimization, and machine learning, describing how these solutions, adapted to work on a quantum computer, can potentially help to solve financial problems, such as derivative pricing, risk modeling, portfolio optimization, natural language processing, and fraud detection, more efficiently and accurately. We also discuss the feasibility of these algorithms on near-term quantum computers with various hardware implementations and demonstrate how they relate to a wide range of use cases in finance. We hope this article will not only serve as a reference for academic researchers and industry practitioners but also inspire new ideas for future research.

Abstract:Quantum computers can solve specific problems that are not feasible on "classical" hardware. Harvesting the speed-up provided by quantum computers therefore has the potential to change any industry which uses computation, including finance. First quantum applications for the financial industry involving optimization, simulation, and machine learning problems have already been proposed and applied to use cases such as portfolio management, risk management, and pricing derivatives. This survey reviews platforms, algorithms, methodologies, and use cases of quantum computing for various applications in finance in a structured way. It is aimed at people working in the financial industry and serves to gain an overview of the current development and capabilities and understand the potential of quantum computing in the financial industry.

Abstract:This review paper examines the potential implications of quantum computing for financial risk management. It explores the fundamental principles of quantum computing, including qubits, superposition, and entanglement. It discusses its advantages over classical computing for risk assessment and mitigation. The paper outlines traditional approaches to financial risk management. It explores how quantum algorithms, such as quantum Monte Carlo methods and quantum annealing, can enhance these strategies. Challenges and barriers to adopting quantum computing in the financial industry are identified, along with future research directions. Ultimately, the paper highlights the transformative potential of quantum computing for improving risk management in today's complex financial markets. From Portfolio Optimization to Quantum Blockchain and Security: A Systematic Review of Quantum Computing in Finance

Abstract:In this paper, we provide an overview of the recent work in the quantum finance realm from various perspectives. The applications in consideration are Portfolio Optimization, Fraud Detection, and Monte Carlo methods for derivative pricing and risk calculation. Furthermore, we give a comprehensive overview of the applications of quantum computing in the field of blockchain technology which is a main concept in fintech. In that sense, we first introduce the general overview of blockchain with its main cryptographic primitives such as digital signature algorithms, hash functions, and random number generators as well as the security vulnerabilities of blockchain technologies after the merge of quantum computers considering Shor's quantum factoring and Grover's quantum search algorithms. We then discuss the privacy preserving quantum-resistant blockchain systems via threshold signatures, ring signatures, and zero-knowledge proof systems i.e. ZK-SNARKs in quantum resistant blockchains. After emphasizing the difference between the quantum-resistant blockchain and quantum-safe blockchain we mention the security countermeasures to take against the possible quantumized attacks aiming these systems. We finalize our discussion with quantum blockchain, efficient quantum mining and necessary infrastructures for constructing such systems based on quantum computing. This review has the intention to be a bridge to fill the gap between quantum computing and one of its most prominent application realms: Finance. We provide the state-of-the-art results in the intersection of finance and quantum technology for both industrial practitioners and academicians.

Abstract:Financial derivatives are contracts that can have a complex payoff dependent upon underlying benchmark assets. In this work, we present a quantum algorithm for the Monte Carlo pricing of financial derivatives. We show how the relevant probability distributions can be prepared in quantum superposition, the payoff functions can be implemented via quantum circuits, and the price of financial derivatives can be extracted via quantum measurements. We show how the amplitude estimation algorithm can be applied to achieve a quadratic quantum speedup in the number of steps required to obtain an estimate for the price with high confidence. This work provides a starting point for further research at the interface of quantum computing and finance.

Abstract:Quantum computing allows a significant speed-up over traditional CPU- and GPU-based algorithms when applied to particular mathematical challenges such as optimisation and simulation. Despite promising advances and extensive research in hard- and software developments, currently available quantum systems are still largely limited in their capability. In line with this, practical applications in quantitative finance are still in their infancy. This paper analyses requirements and concrete approaches for the application to risk management in a financial institution. On the examples of Value-at-Risk for market risk and Potential Future Exposure for counterparty credit risk, the main contribution lies in going beyond textbook illustrations and instead exploring must-have model features and their quantum implementations. While conceptual solutions and small-scale circuits are feasible at this stage, the leap needed for real-life applications is still significant. In order to build a usable risk measurement system, the hardware capacity—measured in number of qubits—would need to increase by several magnitudes from their current value of about . Quantum noise poses an additional challenge, and research into its control and mitigation would need to advance in order to render risk measurement applications deployable in practice. Overall, given the maturity of established classical simulation-based approaches that allow risk computations in reasonable time and with sufficient accuracy, the business case for a move to quantum solutions is not very strong at this point.

The study showcases advanced methodologies such as Quantum Machine Learning (QML) and Quantum Artificial Intelligence (QAI) as powerful solutions for detecting and preventing financial crimes, including money laundering, financial crime detection, cryptocurrency attacks, and market manipulation. These quantum approaches leverage the inherent computational capabilities of quantum computers to overcome limitations faced by classical methods. Abstract:The power of quantum computing may bring a revolution in finance and banking. Here, we present quantum software, BQ-Bank for option pricing, Value at Risk, portfolio optimization, and others. BQ-Bank can be run on a real quantum computer such as superconducting system or on an emulation system based on a classical computer with an interface. BQ-Bank, such as other quantum types of software, represents a new generation of the toolbox that likely brings disruptive innovations to the financial industry and banking market in the future. BQ-Bank also provides the classical Monte Carlo solution, so that users can compare their quantum results with classical ones directly. Our simulation results for a variety of examples show the superiority of quantum solutions.

Abstract:Applying quantum computing to real world applications to assess the potential efficacy is a daunting task for non-quantum specialists. This paper shows an implementation of two quantum optimization algorithms applied to portfolios of trade finance portfolios and compares the selections to those chosen by experienced underwriters and a classical optimizer. The method used is to map the financial risk and returns for a trade finance portfolio to an optimization function of a quantum algorithm developed in a Qiskit tutorial. The results show that whilst there is no advantage seen by using the quantum algorithms, the performance of the quantum algorithms has no statistically significant degradation. Therefore, it is promising that in the future, with expected improvements in quantum hardware, the theoretically superior processing speeds, and data volumes that quantum offers, will also be applicable to trade finance.
An introduction to financial option pricing on a qudit-based quantum computer

Abstract:The financial sector is anticipated to be one of the first industries to benefit from the increased computational power of quantum computers, in areas such as portfolio optimisation and risk management to financial derivative pricing. Financial mathematics, and derivative pricing in particular, are not areas quantum physicists are traditionally trained in despite the fact that they often have the raw technical skills needed to understand such topics. On the other hand, most quantum algorithms have largely focused on qubits, which are comprised of two discrete states, as the information carriers. However, discrete higher-dimensional qudits, in addition to possibly possessing increased noise robustness and allowing for novel error correction protocols in certain hardware implementations, also have logarithmically greater information storage and processing capacity. In the current NISQ era of quantum computing, a wide array of hardware paradigms are still being studied and any potential advantage a platform offers is worth exploring. Here we introduce the basic concepts behind financial derivatives for the unfamiliar enthusiast as well as outline in great detail the quantum algorithm routines needed to price a European option, the simplest derivative. This is done within the context of a quantum computer comprised of qudits and employing the natural higher-dimensional analogue of a qubit-based pricing algorithm with its various subroutines. From these pieces, one should relatively easily be able to tailor the scheme to more complex, realistic financial derivatives. Finally, the entire stack is numerically simulated with the results demonstrating how the qudit-based scheme's payoff quickly approaches that of both a similarly-resourced classical computer as well as the true payoff, within error, for a modest increase in qudit dimension.

Abstract:Quantum computing promises to provide the next step up in computational power for diverse application areas. In this review, we examine the science behind the quantum hype, and the breakthroughs required to achieve true quantum advantage in real world applications. Areas that are likely to have the greatest impact on high performance computing (HPC) include simulation of quantum systems, optimization, and machine learning. We draw our examples from electronic structure calculations and computational fluid dynamics which account for a large fraction of current scientific and engineering use of HPC. Potential challenges include encoding and decoding classical data for quantum devices, and mismatched clock speeds between classical and quantum processors. Even a modest quantum enhancement to current classical techniques would have far-reaching impacts in areas such as weather forecasting, engineering, aerospace, drug design, and the design of ``green'' materials for sustainable development. This requires significant effort from the computational science, engineering and quantum computing communities working together.

Abstract:As we begin to reach the limits of classical computing, quantum computing has emerged as a technology that has captured the imagination of the scientific world. While for many years, the ability to execute quantum algorithms was only a theoretical possibility, recent advances in hardware mean that quantum computing devices now exist that can carry out quantum computation on a limited scale. Thus, it is now a real possibility, and of central importance at this time, to assess the potential impact of quantum computers on real problems of interest. One of the earliest and most compelling applications for quantum computers is Feynman's idea of simulating quantum systems with many degrees of freedom. Such systems are found across chemistry, physics, and materials science. The particular way in which quantum computing extends classical computing means that one cannot expect arbitrary simulations to be sped up by a quantum computer, thus one must carefully identify areas where quantum advantage may be achieved. In this review, we briefly describe central problems in chemistry and materials science, in areas of electronic structure, quantum statistical mechanics, and quantum dynamics that are of potential interest for solution on a quantum computer. We then take a detailed snapshot of current progress in quantum algorithms for ground-state, dynamics, and thermal-state simulation and analyze their strengths and weaknesses for future developments.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Quantum computers promise to surpass the most powerful classical supercomputers when it comes to solving many critically important practical problems, such as pharmaceutical and fertilizer design, supply chain and traffic optimization, or optimization for machine learning tasks. Because quantum computers function fundamentally differently from classical computers, the emergence of quantum computing technology will lead to a new evolutionary branch of statistical and data analytics methodologies. This review provides an introduction to quantum computing designed to be accessible to statisticians and data scientists, aiming to equip them with an overarching framework of quantum computing, the basic language and building blocks of quantum algorithms, and an overview of existing quantum applications in statistics and data analysis. Our goal is to enable statisticians and data scientists to follow quantum computing literature relevant to their fields, to collaborate with quantum algorithm designers, and, ultimately, to bring forth the next generation of statistical and data analytics tools.
