Abstract:A novel phenomenon is reported, wherein, if a mother droplet spreads faster than its critical velocity on a superhydrophilic surface, a smaller daughter droplet is emitted in a process that is controlled both dynamically and thermodynamically. Using a high-speed camera, we directly observed that while the lower part of the droplet spread, the upper part remained unchanged at first, and a temporary meniscus bridge formed in between. This meniscus bridge became unstable owing to capillary pressure, and broke when the lower part spread faster than its critical velocity, emitting the upper part as a daughter droplet. Through modeling and varying experimental parameters such as contact velocity, contact angle and surface structure, we determined that droplet emission could only be achieved by ultrafast spreading on superhydrophilic surfaces. The insights from these observations are helpful for the creation and application of special wettable surfaces.

Abstract:The process that the drop impacts on the solid wall was inrestigated by numerical simulation and experimental observation.The whole process was divided into five stages where the pressure distribution and velocity distribution of the drop were studied.The numerical results,which show good agreement with the experimental results,indicate that the radius of the drop,viscosity,and impact velocity,as well as the contact angle,could affect the max radius of the spread and the max rebound height.

Abstract:In numerous applications related to droplet impact, impacting droplets often interact with solid surfaces with adhesive droplets rather than dry surfaces, but the former is significantly less studied than the latter. Here, for the fundamental process of droplet impact on a stationary droplet on the surface, we investigate droplet dynamics and maximum spreading under various conditions. The spreading diameter and time are reasonably nondimensionalized as the spreading coefficient and dimensionless time by considering both the impacting and stationary droplets, and the complex influence of diameters of two droplets is reduced to the effect of a single droplet volume ratio. The proposed dimensionless framework provides a method to simplify influencing factors and facilitates the study of droplet dynamics under different Weber numbers, surface wettabilities, and droplet volume ratios. The maximum spreading coefficient increases with the increase of the Weber number or the droplet volume ratio, while it is nearly independent of surface wettability. A theoretical model of the maximum spreading diameter is established through energy analysis. By considering the coupled effects of various factors and modifying the viscous dissipation, the model has the merits of high prediction accuracy and broad applicability. Our findings can not only advance the basic understanding of the ubiquitous droplet impact phenomena, but also provide useful guidance for applications such as spraying cooling and inkjet printing.

Abstract:Droplet impact behavior is ubiquitous in various fields. However, the dynamics and spreading mechanisms of micro- and nanoscale droplet impact on curved surfaces, particularly in the case of multiple droplets, have yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) methods are employed to investigate the dynamic evolution of double nanodroplet impact on a nano cylindrical wall. The effects of droplet spacing, initial impact velocity, and wall wettability on droplet impact characteristics are analyzed. The results demonstrate that there are five impact modes of nanoscale double-droplet impacts with nanocylinders: spreading-partial wrapping-splitting-complete detachment (SPSC), spreading-complete wrapping-complete attachment (SCC), spreading-partial wrapping-complete attachment (SPC), spreading-partial wrapping-partial attachment (SPP), and spreading-partial wrapping-fragmentation-partial attachment (SPFP). The droplet spacing has an insignificant effect on the impact modes but affects the droplets' spreading shape in both the axial and radial directions. The initial velocity and wall wettability have significant impacts on the droplet impact modes and liquid film spreading characteristics. As the initial velocity increases, the liquid film's radial and axial spreading distances gradually increase. Under hydrophobic conditions, the spreading of the droplet is dominant in the radial direction, while under hydrophilic conditions, the spreading is dominant in the axial direction. Properly reducing the droplet spacing, increasing the impact velocity, and enhancing the wall hydrophobicity can promote detaching the droplet from the cylindrical wall.

Abstract:Impact of liquid droplets on a solid surface was studied experimentally using a high speed camera on the background of droplet movement in the cyclone type separator.It was found that the spreading process of a droplet was strong influence by initial velocity and splash phenomenon was easy to occur at high impact velocity.Impacting droplets spread on the surface until liquid surface tension and viscosity overcame inertial forces,after which they recoiled off the surface.For some kind of liquid,the spreading diameter increased as the impact velocity increased.Comparing with high viscosity,a low viscosity liquid (water) was easy to spread.In addition,the model referred to the literature was only fitting for low impact velocity (u<6 m/s).The spreading model presented in this paper could predict well the spontaneous spreading of a liquid drop on a solid surface.

Abstract:Droplet impact on rotating surfaces experiences the tangential shear force from the rotating surface, generating a centrifugal force that either enhances the spreading or destabilizes the expanding lamella. In this study, we experimentally characterize the impact of a water droplet on rotating surfaces with various wettabilities, and theoretically analyze the observed impacting dynamics, including the enhanced spreading and the transition to the destabilization of the expanding lamella. Liquids with a wide range of viscosity are tested to explore the effect of liquid viscosity on the impacting dynamics. We propose a simplified approach to predict the tangential velocity induced by the surface's tangential shear force, and validate the predicted velocity by flow field measurement. We further deduce a quantitative description for the maximum spreading factor in the spreading regime, and derive the critical condition for the destabilization of the lamella for a water droplet. Abstract:The research specifically analyzes the characteristics of the impacting droplet and its behavior on the moving surface. The experimental results demonstrate that the droplet impact can be divided into two stages: spreading and stretching. The surface shear force is found to play a decisive role in the droplet's dynamic behaviors. Specifically, the surface shear force inhibits liquid fingers at the front edge of the liquid film during the spreading stage, but promotes the extension of liquid fingers at the trailing edge of the droplet during the stretching stage. The surface shear force has a significant influence on the longitudinal spreading factor of the droplet during the spreading stage. The transverse maximum spreading time decreases with the increase of shear weber number. The wake flow of the droplet is mainly divided into four types: wetting deposition, fracture separation, single finger, and multi-fingers. Additionally, the ratio of the horizontal maximum spreading factor to the longitudinal spreading factor in the same time is found to be positively correlated with the ratio of the two weber numbers. The research findings contribute to the fundamental understanding of droplet dynamics on moving surfaces and highlights the importance of considering surface shear force in understanding droplet dynamics and provides a basis for further research in this field.

Abstract:Herein, we report an experimental investigation on droplet impact dynamics with a particular interest in the effects of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of particles on the impact dynamics. Remarkable contact line pinning and receding breakup were observed when hydrophobic particles were present in the dro-plets, while hydrophilic particles showed little effect on the dynamics. Furthermore, the maximum retraction height and vertical oscillatory relaxation time for the droplet were restrained by hydrophobic particles. Scanning electron microscopy and rheological analyses revealed that these phenomena may be related to the adsorption and deposition of hydrophobic particles near the three-phase contact line, which leads to an increase in local viscosity and friction near the edge of the drop. In addition, the contact line pinning is positively associated with the Weber number and particle concentration. Our work pro -vides a novel approach for droplet impact dynamics control, particularly for suppressing the oscillation and contraction of droplets. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The impact of nanodroplets on a solid surface is widely encountered in industrial processes. Understanding the processes that occur when nanodroplets impact a rough surface is of great significance, but the mechanism and dynamics of these processes remain unclear due to the limitations of experimental tools and the shortcomings of most macroscale models. This paper describes molecular dynamics simulations conducted to explore these nanoscale processes. The wettability and solid fraction of the textured substrate and the effects of different impact velocities are investigated. We demonstrate that the maximum spreading time can be described as a power law of the Weber number and that the maximum spreading factor increases with increasing surface wettability. Owing to changes in the attraction between the nanodroplets and the textured substrate, the maximum spreading factor also increases as the solid fraction increases. Based on energy analysis, a theoretical model is proposed for predicting the maximum spreading factor, and this is found to be in good agreement with the simulation results. The results of this study provide useful guidance for predicting the dynamics of nanodroplet impacts.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally and numerically investigated the spreading of impinging droplets of two sizes and different viscosities on nanostructured superhydrophobic surfaces. We show that the spreading characteristics of impinging droplets are highly dependent on the impact velocity and liquid viscosity, but less dependent on the droplet size. The maximum spreading factor, which increases with impact velocity but decreases with liquid viscosity, cannot be well described by the theoretical models developed at a level of scaling analysis in the literature. Based on numerical simulations, we analyze the temporal evolution of all energy terms involved in the dynamics, and demonstrate that the deviation of the theoretical predictions from experimental results is due to the neglect of the residual kinetic energy and improper estimation of the interfacial and viscous dissipation energies in the theoretical models.

Abstract:Hypothesis Droplet spreading governs various daily phenomena and industrial processes. Insights about microdroplet spreading are limited due to experimental difficulties arising from microdroplet manipulation and substrate wettability control. For droplet sizes approaching the capillary length scale, the gravitational force plays an important role in spreading. In contrast, capillary and viscous forces dominate as the droplet size reduces to smaller length scales. We hypothesize that the dynamic spreading behavior of microdroplets whose radius is far lower than the capillary length differs substantially from established and well understood dynamics. Experiments To systematically investigate the spreading dynamics of microdroplets, we develop contact-initiated wetting techniques combined with structuring-independent wettability control to achieve microdroplet (<500 μm) spreading on arbitrary surfaces while eliminating parasitic pinning effects (pining force ∼ 0) and initial impact momentum effects (Weber number ∼ 0). Findings Our experiments reveal that the capillary-driven initial spreading of microdroplets is shorter, with significantly reduced oscillation dampening, when compared to millimeter-scale droplets. Furthermore, spreading along with capillary wave propagation results in coupling between the spreading velocity and dynamic contact angle at the contact line. These findings, along with our proposed microdroplet manipulation platform, may find application in microscale heat transfer, advanced manufacturing, and aerosol transmission studies.

Abstract:Droplet impact on solid substrates is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature, agriculture, and industrial processes, playing a crucial role in numerous applications including self-cleaning, pesticide utilization, and inkjet printing. As a promising technique, adding nanoparticles into simple fluids to form nanofluids can effectively manipulate droplet impact behaviors. However, a comprehensive understanding of how nanoparticles modify the droplet impact dynamics, especially on the nanoscale, is still far from being fully explored. Hence, in this work, through the combined effort of molecular dynamics simulations and theoretical analysis, we elaborate on the influences of nanoparticles on droplet impact process. Using simple droplets as a control, we summarize four typical droplet impact modes and reveal how nanoparticles alter the impact behaviors of droplets, taking into account the key parameters including substrate wettability, impact velocity, volume fraction, and mass fraction of nanoparticles. We also demonstrate that with appropriate modifications, the theoretical/empirical models to predict the maximum contact diameter and the occurrence of breakup for simple droplets still hold to predict those of nanofluid droplets. Our findings and results enhance the understanding of the impact of nanoparticles on the droplet impact dynamics, with promising possibilities for various applications where regulating droplet impact behaviors is desired.

Abstract:The developments in nanocoating and nanospray technology have resulted in the increasing importance of the impact of micro-/nanoscale liquid droplets on solid surface. In this paper, the impact of a nanodroplet on a flat solid surface is examined using molecular dynamics simulations. The impact velocity ranges from 58 m/s to 1044 m/s, in accordance with the Weber number ranging from 0.62 to 200.02 and the Reynolds number ranging from 0.89 to 16.14. The obtained maximum spreading factors are compared with previous models in the literature. The predicted results from the previous models largely deviate from our simulation results, with mean relative errors up to 58.12%. The estimated viscous dissipation is refined to present a modified theoretical model, which reduces the mean relative error to 15.12% in predicting the maximum spreading factor for cases of nanodroplet impact.

Abstract:In nature, high-speed rain drops often impact and spread on curved surfaces e.g. tree leaves. Although a drop impact on a surface is a traditional topic for industrial applications, drop-impact dynamics on curved surfaces in natural situations are less known about. In the present study, we examine the time-dependent spreading dynamics of a drop onto a curved hydrophobic surface. We also observed that a drop on a curved surface is spreads farther than one on a flat surface. To understand the spreading dynamics, a new analytical model is developed based on volume conservation and temporal energy balance. This model converges to previous models at the early stage and in the final stage of droplet impact. We compared the new model with measured spreading lengths on various curved surfaces and impact speeds, which resulted in good agreement.

Abstract:Nanofluids, which are the term for suspensions of nanometer-sized structures, have recently been extensively used in a rapid increasing number of applications. In this work, spreading behaviors of water-based nanofluid droplets were investigated via molecular dynamics simulation. Influencing factors such as nanoparticle volume fraction and surface wettability were discussed in details on the atomic scale. Our simulation results demonstrated that the dynamics spreading of nanofluids can be effectively regulated by adjusting these factors. Based on the scaling law R(t) ∝ t^1/n , we proposed a competitive mechanism analysis among surface tension, viscous force and disjoining pressure, which describes the power relationship between contact radius R and spreading time t . These findings indicate that the nanoparticle-tuned spreading behavior of nanofluid droplets can be extensively used for diverse applications.

Abstract:The impact of droplets on the surface is a common phenomenon. The outcome of a droplet impacting on a solid surface depends on the properties of the liquid, the surface conditions and the kinematics parameters, i.e. velocity and momentum. During the impact process, the phenomenons, such as spread, rebound, often appear. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of droplets impacting on inclined solid surface at low velocity. The effects of the impact parameters on the droplet impingement are studied. Measures were performed using a high-speed camera. It has been shown that the impacting droplets spread on the surface until liquid surface tension and viscosity overcame inertial forces, after which they recoiled off the surface. The maximum diameter of a droplet spread was measured. In addition, a further forecasting expression has been obtained through energy model when a droplet impacts on an inclined surface without splashing. Abstract:We study numerically the dynamics of an air-in-liquid compound drop impacting onto a solid surface. We demonstrate that the addition of a bubble in the drop decreases its maximum spreading. This decrease is explained by the lower kinetic energy of the drop, but also amplified by the formation of a vertical jet emerging from its center, and a relative increase in the viscous dissipation. We propose a new theory describing the maximum spreading of an air-in-liquid compound drop by including these effects into modified Weber and Reynolds numbers. Finally, we demonstrate that the eventual bursting of the bubble does not significantly affect the maximum spreading diameter, by characterizing the bubble bursting and performing additional simulations where the bursting of the bubble is prevented.

Abstract:Dynamic characteristics of large droplet impacting on surface at high velocities were simulated using Volume Of Fluid method (VOF).Droplet splashing was found at the spreading phase of the droplet impacting the surface at a high velocity.At the contraction phase, the phenomenon of the slow contraction,the water ring separating with the central water film, the water central film breaking into two parts and full breaking up will appear with the diameter of the droplet decreasing and the velocity of the droplet increasing.The maximum spreading diameter and the maximum spreading coefficient increase with the increasing of the droplet diameter and the droplet velocity.The dimensionless time of reaching the maximum spreading diameter increases slightly with the diameter increasing.The variation of the dimensionless time of reaching the maximum spreading diameter is small at different velocities for the same diameter droplet.
Experimental Study on the Droplet Impact on Solid Surface with Different Roughness

Abstract:The impact dynamics of droplets of different liquids onto solid surfaces with different roughness was investigated by using the high-speed microphotography.The influences of viscosity,surface tension and surface roughness on the non-dimensional maximum spreading diameter and the critical Weber number for transition from spreading to splashing were discussed.The results showed that the non-dimensional maximum spreading diameter decreases with the increasing liquid viscosity,and higher surface tension makes droplet more possible to retract after impacting on the solid surface.It was also observed that water is the only liquid that retracts in the experiment since it has obviously higher surface tension than other three liquids.The droplet needs to wet larger surface and will have higher viscous dissipation with the increase of surface roughness,leading to the decrease of the maximum spreading diameter at the same Weber number.The relationship of the maximum spreading diameter with Weber number,Ohnesorge number and surface roughness was obtained by introducing surface roughness to Laan's equation.The "finger-like" disturbance around the rim becomes more obvious with the increase of surface roughness,which makes the droplet more likely to splash after impact onto the solid surface and leads to lower critical Weber number for transition from spreading to splashing.In addition,the surface roughness influences the critical Weber number more significantly for the liquids with smaller Ohnesorge number.
