Abstract:When a particle is attached under a liquid drop by surface tension, it forms a solid-liquid compound drop. We investigate experimentally the impact dynamics of this compound drop onto a solid surface. After impact, the particle rebounds from the solid surface and rises through the drop. The particle can either remain in the deposited liquid at low impact velocities or separate from the drop above a critical impact velocity. We demonstrate here that as the liquid viscosity increases, this separation threshold transitions from a capillary threshold, characterized by a critical particle Weber number, to a viscous threshold, captured by a critical particle Stokes number. However, the particle can still separate from the drop below this viscous limit if the particle is shifted away from the axis of symmetry before the impact of the compound drop. This shifting is observed experimentally at large falling heights, where the particle is destabilized by the air drag. In addition, we show that the shifting of the particle can also induce an inclination in the vertical liquid jetting, with a tangent of its angle proportional to the shifting distance of the particle. Finally, we confirm the focusing mechanism responsible for this liquid jetting by combining the observations of two synchronized cameras, from side view and bottom view.

Abstract:We study numerically the dynamics of an air-in-liquid compound drop impacting onto a solid surface. We demonstrate that the addition of a bubble in the drop decreases its maximum spreading. This decrease is explained by the lower kinetic energy of the drop, but also amplified by the formation of a vertical jet emerging from its center, and a relative increase in the viscous dissipation. We propose a new theory describing the maximum spreading of an air-in-liquid compound drop by including these effects into modified Weber and Reynolds numbers. Finally, we demonstrate that the eventual bursting of the bubble does not significantly affect the maximum spreading diameter, by characterizing the bubble bursting and performing additional simulations where the bursting of the bubble is prevented.

Abstract:Droplet impact on rotating surfaces experiences the tangential shear force from the rotating surface, generating a centrifugal force that either enhances the spreading or destabilizes the expanding lamella. In this study, we experimentally characterize the impact of a water droplet on rotating surfaces with various wettabilities, and theoretically analyze the observed impacting dynamics, including the enhanced spreading and the transition to the destabilization of the expanding lamella. Liquids with a wide range of viscosity are tested to explore the effect of liquid viscosity on the impacting dynamics. We propose a simplified approach to predict the tangential velocity induced by the surface's tangential shear force, and validate the predicted velocity by flow field measurement. We further deduce a quantitative description for the maximum spreading factor in the spreading regime, and derive the critical condition for the destabilization of the lamella for a water droplet. Compound droplets are utilized in applications ranging from preparation of emulsion to biological cell printing and additive manufacturing. Here, we report on the impact dynamics of an air-in-liquid hollow compound droplet on a solid substrate. Contrary to the impact of pure droplets and compound droplets with liquids of similar densities, a compound droplet with an encapsulated air bubble demonstrates the formation of a counterjet in addition to the lamella. We experimentally investigate the influence of the size of the air bubble, liquid viscosity, and height of impact on the evolution of counterjet and the spreading characteristics of the lamella. For a given hollow droplet, the volume of the counterjet is observed to depend on the volume of air and liquid in the droplet and is independent of the viscosity of the liquid and impact velocity of the droplet. We observe that the spread characteristics, counterintuitively, do not vary significantly compared to that of a pure droplet having an identical liquid volume as the hollow droplet. We propose a model to predict the maximum spread during impact of a hollow droplet based on the energy interaction between the spreading liquid and the liquid in the counterjet during the impact process.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of a drop containing a single solid particle impacting on a solid surface. The particle rebounds through the drop during impact and can separate from the deposited liquid above an impact velocity threshold. We show that this threshold can be predicted by a simple energy balance. Moreover, we discover a new type of liquid jetting ejected above the particle faster than the impact velocity. We demonstrate that this jetting is due to the focusing effect of the liquid on the solid substrate below the rebounding particle. Although the wetting properties of the particle have a minor effect on the separation threshold, they play a key role in the liquid jetting by affecting the immersion depth of the particle at the time of impact.
On the Maximal Spreading of Impacting Compound Drops

Abstract:We numerically study the impact of a compound drop on a hydrophobic substrate using a ternary-fluid diffuse-interface method, aiming to understand how the presence of the inner droplet affects the spreading dynamics and maximal spreading of the compound drop. First, it is interesting to see that the numerical results for an impacting pure drop agree well with the universal rescaling of maximal spreading ratio proposed by Lee et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 786, 2016, R4). Second, two flow regimes have been identified for an impacting compound drop: namely jammed spreading and joint rim formation. The maximal spreading ratio of the compound drop is found to depend on the volume fraction of the inner droplet $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$, the surface tension ratio $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$, the Weber number and the flow regime. Moreover, we propose a universal rescaling of maximal spreading ratio for compound drops, by integrating the one for pure drops with a corrected Weber number that takes $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$ and the flow regime into account. The predictions of the universal rescaling are in good agreement with the numerical results for impacting compound drops.

Abstract:Hypothesis The solid fraction of the substrate is expected to influence the bouncing behavior of an impinging droplet, thereby affecting spreading and contact time. Hence, it should be possible to alter the velocity and pressure distribution of impacting droplet, and also affect the impact velocity for droplet penetration right upon impact. Simulations We systematically investigate the impact dynamics of water droplets on pillared hydrophobic surfaces with different solid fractions using phase-field simulations. The velocity and pressure distributions of impacting droplets on pillared hydrophobic surfaces with varied Weber numbers and solid fractions are studied. In addition, the influences of the solid fraction on the bouncing behaviors of the impinging droplet, such as the maximum wetting spreading, the maximum impacting depth, and the contact time, are also investigated to further understand the impact event. Findings We show that a three-peak pressure profile appears on the top of the pillared hydrophobic surface during droplet impact by varying the solid fraction of the surface. The first peak is generated by the impact of the droplet itself, while the second peak arises from the droplet recoil impact associated with the dynamic properties of the jet. Moreover, we identify a hitherto unknown third pressure peak related to the hydrodynamic singularity that emerges due to the convergence of the fluid during the droplet rebound. This solid fraction-dependent impacting behavior reveals the intricate interplay between droplet dynamics and the underlying surface characteristics, providing valuable insights into the design and optimization of micro/nano structured hydrophobic surfaces for various applications.

Abstract:In numerous applications related to droplet impact, impacting droplets often interact with solid surfaces with adhesive droplets rather than dry surfaces, but the former is significantly less studied than the latter. Here, for the fundamental process of droplet impact on a stationary droplet on the surface, we investigate droplet dynamics and maximum spreading under various conditions. The spreading diameter and time are reasonably nondimensionalized as the spreading coefficient and dimensionless time by considering both the impacting and stationary droplets, and the complex influence of diameters of two droplets is reduced to the effect of a single droplet volume ratio. The proposed dimensionless framework provides a method to simplify influencing factors and facilitates the study of droplet dynamics under different Weber numbers, surface wettabilities, and droplet volume ratios. The maximum spreading coefficient increases with the increase of the Weber number or the droplet volume ratio, while it is nearly independent of surface wettability. A theoretical model of the maximum spreading diameter is established through energy analysis. By considering the coupled effects of various factors and modifying the viscous dissipation, the model has the merits of high prediction accuracy and broad applicability. Our findings can not only advance the basic understanding of the ubiquitous droplet impact phenomena, but also provide useful guidance for applications such as spraying cooling and inkjet printing.
Effects of the Surface Wettability of Nanoparticles on the Impact Dynamics of Droplets

Abstract:Herein, we report an experimental investigation on droplet impact dynamics with a particular interest in the effects of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of particles on the impact dynamics. Remarkable contact line pinning and receding breakup were observed when hydrophobic particles were present in the dro-plets, while hydrophilic particles showed little effect on the dynamics. Furthermore, the maximum retraction height and vertical oscillatory relaxation time for the droplet were restrained by hydrophobic particles. Scanning electron microscopy and rheological analyses revealed that these phenomena may be related to the adsorption and deposition of hydrophobic particles near the three-phase contact line, which leads to an increase in local viscosity and friction near the edge of the drop. In addition, the contact line pinning is positively associated with the Weber number and particle concentration. Our work pro -vides a novel approach for droplet impact dynamics control, particularly for suppressing the oscillation and contraction of droplets. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, drop impact onto a sphere is numerically investigated at moderate Reynolds and Weber numbers. It is naturally expected that the aspect ratio of the sphere to the drop, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{r}$, would make a big difference to drop spreading and retraction on the sphere, compared with drop impact onto a flat substrate. To quantitatively assess the effect of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{r}$, a diffuse-interface immersed-boundary method is adopted after being validated against experiments. With the help of numerical simulations, we identify the key regimes in the spreading and retraction, analyse the results by scaling laws, and quantitatively evaluate the effect of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{r}$ on the impact dynamics. We find that the thickness of the liquid film spreading on the sphere can be well approximated by $h_{L,\infty }(1+3/4\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{r}^{-3/2})$, where $h_{L,\infty }$ represents the film thickness of drop impact on a flat substrate. At the early stage of spreading, the temporal variation of the wetted area is independent of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{r}$ when the time is rescaled by the thickness of the liquid film. Drops are observed to retract on the sphere at a roughly constant speed, and the predictions of theoretical analysis are in good agreement with numerical results.
Rebound suppression of a droplet impact on a supersolvophobic surface by a small amount of polymer additives

Abstract:A small amount of polymer dissolved in a droplet suppresses droplet rebound when it impinges on a supersolvophobic surface. This work investigates impacting dynamics of a droplet of dilute polymer solution depending on the molecular weight and the concentration of the polymer by using multi-body dissipative particle dynamics simulations. Either the longer polymer or the high polymer concentration suppresses rebound of a droplet although its shear viscosity and the liquid-vapor surface tension are not different from those of a pure solvent droplet. We found a new mechanism of the anti-rebound in which the resistance is applied against the hopping motion, while behavior of the non-rebounding droplet at the earlier spreading and retraction stages is same as for the rebounding droplets. Two polymer contributions to reducing the rebound tendency are quantitatively analyzed: the alteration of the substrate wettability by the polymer adsorption and the polymer elongation force.

The Maximum Spreading Factor for Polymer Nanodroplets Impacting a Hydrophobic Solid Surface

Abstract:We investigate the impact behaviors of nanoscale polymer droplets on a solid surface via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The maximum spreading factor is focused on understanding the energy dissipation mechanism during impact. Our simulations show that the macroscale model for blood droplets and the nanoscale models for water droplets cannot capture the simulated maximum spreading factor of nanoscale polymer droplets. We demonstrate that viscous dissipation for nanoscale polymer droplets stems from the velocity gradients in both the impact and the spreading direction, whereas for macroscale blood droplets and nanoscale water droplets, only the velocity gradient in the impact direction contributes to it. With the consideration of different dissipation mechanism, we propose a modified expression of viscous dissipation and develop a new model to predict the maximum spreading factor of nanoscale polymer droplets. By comparing the model predictions with MD simulations, we show that the new model can capture more precisely the simulated maximum spreading factor for nanoscale polymer droplets with chain length ranging from 10 to 100. The present simulations and developed model can provide useful insights into the mechanism of nanoscale polymer droplets impacting surfaces.

Abstract:Impact of liquid droplets on a solid surface was studied experimentally using a high speed camera on the background of droplet movement in the cyclone type separator.It was found that the spreading process of a droplet was strong influence by initial velocity and splash phenomenon was easy to occur at high impact velocity.Impacting droplets spread on the surface until liquid surface tension and viscosity overcame inertial forces,after which they recoiled off the surface.For some kind of liquid,the spreading diameter increased as the impact velocity increased.Comparing with high viscosity,a low viscosity liquid (water) was easy to spread.In addition,the model referred to the literature was only fitting for low impact velocity (u<6 m/s).The spreading model presented in this paper could predict well the spontaneous spreading of a liquid drop on a solid surface.

Abstract:Abstract Antiliquid‐accumulation on the surface is desired in practical applications. Super‐repellency of the surface reduces the interaction between impacting drop and the surface effectively. However, for horizontal super‐repellent surfaces, super‐repellency is not enough for liquid removal when drops keep coalescing and remain on the surface. The interaction between impacting drop and static drop can further be beneficial for antiliquid‐accumulation on the surface. Here, aqueous drop‐on‐drop impact on the super‐repellent surface is studied. Weber number of impacting drop and offset distance between drops control impacting outcomes (coalescence or bouncing), while the viscosity of drops influences fluid dynamics after the coalescence. The efficiency of released excess surface energy transferred into mechanical energy during coalescence can be 18.9% for upcoalescence, which is much higher than the efficiency for downcoalescence or in‐plane coalescence (≈6%) as reported in the literature. The bouncing between drops can reduce liquid accumulation on a super‐repellent wafer remarkably (99.1 vol% reduction of accumulated liquid), being a promising method for liquid removal.

Abstract:Drop collision with a solid particle is a ubiquitous phenomenon in a wide range of applications, including rain, spray coating, cooling or cleaning, particle encapsulation, inkjet printing, and additive manufacturing. Understanding the dynamics of drop collision is essential for optimizing these processes. In this study, we present a comprehensive experimental and analytical investigation of non-axisymmetric as well as axisymmetric drop impact on a solid particle. We use a high-speed video system to visualize the drop profile during the impact, and measure the drop height and spreading diameter for different liquid viscosities, ratios of the target to drop diameters, offsets, and various other impact parameters. We then develop a theoretical model for drop spreading on a solid spherical particle that relies on the formulation of a remote asymptotic solution for the inviscid flows, generated by non-axisymmetric drop impact. Next, the viscous effects in a thin viscous boundary layer are considered, which allows the formulation of an expression for the residual lamella thickness and maximum spreading. The theoretically predicted evolution of the lamella thickness, the residual film thickness, and the maximum spreading angle agree well with the experimental data presented in this work and the literature. Finally, we present a novel approach for in situ measurement of liquid viscosity, drop impact viscometry, at high shear rates via a single drop impact experiment, with potential application in industries where non-Newtonian drops play a major role, such as pesticide spraying, paint droplet spreading, blood drop impact and fuel injectors.

Abstract:The compound droplet will exhibits much more complex behavior when it adheres to a wall under flow.Studying the influence of related parameter plays an important role in the manipulation of the compound droplet.In this paper,a three-dimensional numerical method involving the moving contact line problem is developed by integrating the generalized Navier boundary condition into the front-tracking method.The proposed method is applied to study the effects of the capillary number of inner and outer interface and the volume of inner droplet on the deformation and motion of the compound droplet adhering to the wall with considering the contact angle hysteresis effect.It found that the compound droplet is more like to be detached or pinched-off by the flow when the capillary number of outer interface and the volume of inner droplet are large and the capillary number of inner interface is small.

Abstract:The kinematic time and maximum spreading time for the impact of nanodroplets of different types of fluids on solid surfaces with different wettability are investigated. It shows that the capillary regime still exits for the nanodroplet impact, even if viscous dissipation increases significantly when the droplet size reduces to the nanoscale. By taking into account the influence of liquid types and surface wettability, we first obtain scaling laws of the maximum spreading time for the capillary and viscous regimes. We further propose a universal scaling law by interpolating the scaling laws in the two asymptotic regimes. Abstract:The dynamic behavior of compound droplets, which are made up of a millimeter-sized particle and distilled water, impacting substrates of different wettabilities is investigated via high-speed photography. The effects of the size of the particle within the compound droplet, substrate contact angle, and impact height on the deformation of the droplets and the characteristics of the impact are analyzed. It is found that the collisions of compound droplets with substrates can be classified into four categories based on the observed experimental phenomena that occur during the impact. These categories are referred to as adhesion collision, rebound collision, daughter-droplet collision (or partial rebound collision), and breakup collision. We consider both the impact of water droplets and compound droplets (with one of two different-sized particles) on substrates of different wettabilities. The effects of inertia, surface tension, and adhesion between the substrate and the liquid droplet, and adhesion between the particle and the liquid droplet are considered to explain the different collision phenomena of compound droplets and reveal the evolution mechanism of the droplet morphologies in the experiments. Furthermore, the effects of the height from which the droplet is released and the contact angle of the substrate (i.e., its wettability) on the maximum spreading diameter and maximum jet height of the droplet are presented quantitatively. The effect of the size of the particle within the compound droplet and the substrate contact angle on the dynamic behavior of the compound droplet subject to impact with the substrate is also described.
