Abstract:Globally, the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) increases with age, which is particularly evident as life expectancy continues to rise in low and middle-income countries. [ 1 ] This trend has significant implications for global health. Lower limb VTE, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), can be severe, with thrombus detachment in a small portion of DVT patients potentially leading to fatal PE. Even with active treatment, roughly half of proximal DVT patients will still experience post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) within 2 years. [ 2 ] PTS patients often suffer from chronic limb pain and swelling, and approximately 5% will develop venous ulcers, [ 2 ] which are slow to heal and expensive to treat. [ 3–5 ]
