Abstract:The solidification of a deep magma ocean occurred early in Earth's history. Although the initial amount of H 2 O in Earth's magma ocean is predicted to be low (e.g., 10 wt%) in the final few percent of crystallization. In order to understand how a hydrous magma ocean would crystallize at the top of the lower mantle, we determined liquidus phase relations in the MgO-FeO-CaO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -H 2 O system at 24 GPa. We find that the bridgmanite (brg) + stishovite (st) + melt and bridgmanite (brg) + ferropericlase (fp) + melt cotectic boundary curves trend to Mg-rich melt compositions with decreasing temperature and extend to very high H 2 O contents (∼80 mol% H 2 O). The brg+st+melt curve is a subtraction curve at < ∼18 mol% H 2 O and a reaction curve at higher H 2 O contents, whereas the brg+fp+melt is a subtraction curve throughout its length. The density of melts along the two cotectics leads to neutral buoyancy with respect to shallow lower mantle and transition zone minerals at H 2 O contents up to ∼25 mol%. A transient melt-rich layer can form at the top of the lower mantle during late-stage crystallization in a mushy magma ocean when melt percolation dominates. When crystallization exceeds ∼98%, hydrous melts (>25 mol% H 2 O) become buoyant and can percolate into and hydrate the mantle transition zone.

Water Content of the Dehydration Melting Layer in the Topmost Lower Mantle

Abstract:The water-rich mantle transition zone and dry lower mantle suggest that a dehydration melting layer can form at the 660-km depth boundary. However, the water content of the melting layer (CH2Omelt), which dominates its gravitational stability and melt fraction, remains poorly constrained. Here, the CH2Omelt of hydrous silicate melt by mass balance calculations is investigated and found that CH2Omelt significantly decreases with increasing temperature, but is relatively insensitive to chemical composition (FeO and SiO2 contents) and coexisting phases. Melt at 660-km depth should contain similar to 50 wt.% water at 1600 K (slab geotherm) or similar to 20 wt.% water at 2000 K (topmost lower mantle geotherm). The density of the hydrous melt is <3.9 g/cm(3), which makes it buoyant. With a melt fraction of greater than or similar to 0.5 vol.%, the melting layer is expected to significantly reduce the viscosity and seismic velocity near slabs, which may cause slab stagnation and prohibit whole mantle convection.
Variation in bridgmanite grain size accounts for the mid-mantle viscosity jump

Abstract:A viscosity jump of one to two orders of magnitude in the lower mantle of Earth at 800-1,200-km depth is inferred from geoid inversions and slab-subducting speeds. This jump is known as the mid-mantle viscosity jump(1,2). The mid-mantle viscosity jump is a key component of lower-mantle dynamics and evolution because it decelerates slab subduction(3), accelerates plume ascent(4) and inhibits chemical mixing(5). However, because phase transitions of the main lower-mantle minerals do not occur at this depth, the origin of the viscosity jump remains unknown. Here we show that bridgmanite-enriched rocks in the deep lower mantle have a grain size that is more than one order of magnitude larger and a viscosity that is at least one order of magnitude higher than those of the overlying pyrolitic rocks. This contrast is sufficient to explain the mid-mantle viscosity jump(1,2). The rapid growth in bridgmanite-enriched rocks at the early stage of the history of Earth and the resulting high viscosity account for their preservation against mantle convection(5-7). The high Mg:Si ratio of the upper mantle relative to chondrites(8), the anomalous Nd-142:Nd-144, W-182:W-184 and He-3:He-4 isotopic ratios in hot-spot magmas(9,10), the plume deflection(4) and slab stagnation in the mid-mantle(3) as well as the sparse observations of seismic anisotropy(11,12) can be explained by the long-term preservation of bridgmanite-enriched rocks in the deep lower mantle as promoted by their fast grain growth.

Abstract:The mechanisms sustaining basaltic continental intraplate volcanism remain controversial. Continental intraplate volcanism is often geographically associated with slab stagnation in the mantle transition zone (MTZ), for example, in eastern Asia, central Europe, and western North America. Using 2‐D geodynamic models, we here explore the role of the stagnation of a slab and an associated hydrous layer in the MTZ on the formation and evolution of intraplate volcanism. Due to the intrinsic buoyancy of the hydrous layer atop the stagnant slab, upwellings develop within a few million years and rise to ~410‐km depth. At these depths, they partly lose their intrinsic buoyancy due to dehydration and stall intermittently. However, they are readily entrained by sublithospheric small‐scale convection to reach the base of lithosphere, sustaining mantle melting and intraplate volcanism. Water contents of >0.3 wt.‐% in a ≥ 60‐km‐thick layer atop the slab are sufficient for an early (<~20 Myr) onset of melting to account for volcanism, for example, in NE China. Thus, significant amounts of hydrous materials are not expected to remain stable in the MTZ for geological timescales, consistent with geophysical estimates. To explain the geochemical signatures of the Cenozoic basaltic volcanism in northern China, a mixed composition of the hydrous layer, including an enriched mantle‐type and a hybrid depleted mid‐ocean ridge basalts mantle/high μ‐type component, is required.

Reconciling Magma-Ocean Crystallization Models with the present-day Structure of the Earth's mantle

Abstract:Terrestrial planets are thought to experience episode(s) of large-scale melting early in their history. Fractionation during magma-ocean freezing leads to unstable stratification within the related cumulate layers due to progressive iron enrichment upward, but the effects of incremental cumulate overturns during MO crystallization remain to be explored. Here, we use geodynamic models with a moving-boundary approach to study convection and mixing within the growing cumulate layer, and thereafter within the fully crystallized mantle. For fractional crystallization, cumulates are efficiently stirred due to subsequent incremental overturns, except for strongly iron-enriched late-stage cumulates, which persist as a stably stratified layer at the base of the mantle for billions of years. Less extreme crystallization scenarios can lead to somewhat more subtle stratification. In any case, the long-term preservation of at least a thin layer of extremely enriched cumulates with Fe#>0.4, as predicted by all our models, is inconsistent with seismic constraints. Based on scaling relationships, however, we infer that final-stage Fe-rich magma-ocean cumulates originally formed near the surface should have overturned as small diapirs, and hence undergone melting and reaction with the host rock during sinking. The resulting moderately iron-enriched metasomatized/hybrid rock assemblages should have accumulated at the base of the mantle, potentially fed an intermittent basal magma ocean, and be preserved through the present-day. Such moderately iron-enriched rock assemblages can reconcile the physical properties of the large low shear-wave velocity provinces in the presentday lower mantle. Thus, we reveal Hadean melting and rock-reaction processes by integrating magmaocean crystallization models with the seismic-tomography snapshot.

Superionic Iron Hydride Shapes Ultralow-Velocity Zones at Earth's Core-Mantle Boundary.

Abstract:Seismological studies have exposed numerous ultralow velocity zones (ULVZs) exhibiting extraordinary physical attributes at Earth's core-mantle boundary, yet their compositions and origins remain controversial. Water-iron reaction can generate unique phases under lowermost-mantle conditions and likely plays a crucial role in forming ULVZs. Through first-principles molecular dynamic simulations with machine learning techniques, we determine that iron hydride, the product of water-iron reaction, is stable as a superionic phase at the core-mantle boundary. This superionic iron hydride has much slower velocities and a higher density than the ambient mantle under lowermost-mantle conditions. Accumulation of iron hydride, created through either a chemical reaction between subducted water and iron or solidification of core material entrained in the lower mantle by convection, can explain the seismic observations of ULVZs particularly those associated with subduction. This work suggests that water may have a substantial role in creating seismic heterogeneities at the core-mantle boundary.

Abstract:Hydrous minerals in subducted crust can transport large amounts of water into Earth's deep mantle. Our laboratory experiments revealed the surprising pressure-induced chemistry that, when water meets iron at the core-mantle boundary, they react to form an interlayer with an extremely oxygen-rich form of iron, iron dioxide, together with iron hydride. Hydrogen in the layer will escape upon further heating and rise to the crust, sustaining the water cycle. With water supplied by the subducting slabs meeting the nearly inexhaustible iron source in the core, an oxygen-rich layer would cumulate and thicken, leading to major global consequences in our planet. The seismic signature of the D ″ layer may echo the chemical complexity of this layer. Over the course of geological time, the enormous oxygen reservoir accumulating between the mantle and core may have eventually reached a critical eruption point. Very large-scale oxygen eruptions could possibly cause major activities in the mantle convection and leave evidence such as the rifting of supercontinents and the Great Oxidation Event.

Abstract:The origins of ultra-low velocity zones (ULVZs) detected at Earth’s core-mantle boundary, potentially linked to large low shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs), have been a subject of ongoing debate. Recent experiments have demonstrated the formation of iron hydride through a water-iron reaction under lowermost-mantle conditions; however, the stability of this compound has been inadequately constrained. By integrating first-principles molecular dynamic simulations with a machine learning approach, we have determined the stability and elastic properties of iron hydride under core-mantle boundary conditions. Our results reveal that iron hydride is a stable superionic phase, in which hydrogen diffuses akin to a liquid while iron vibrates at lattice sites. Significantly, this phase exhibits markedly slower velocities and a higher density compared to the ambient mantle under lowermost-mantle conditions. The accumulation of iron hydride, through either water-iron reaction or the solidification of core material, provides a plausible explanation for seismic observations of ULVZs, particularly those associated with subduction. This work underscores the substantial role of water in generating seismic heterogeneities at the core-mantle boundary.

Abstract:On the basis of mineral assemblage, mineralogy, petrology, and major, trace elemental and isotopic geochemistry of the underplated granulite- and eclogite-facies accumulate, peridotite and pyroxenite xenoliths entrained in Hannuoba Cenozoic basalts, this work constrained the petrological constituents for the crust-mantle transitional zone, which is supported by the results of high-temperature and pressure velocity experiments on rocks and geophysics deep survey. Present lower part of lower crust is mainly composed of granulite-facies mafic accumulates (dominantly plagioclase websterite) and crust-mantle transitional zone dominantly composed of eclogite-facies pyroxenites with or without garnet and spinel lherzolites; Archaean terrain granulite is only nominally early lower crust. Magma underplating in the crust-mantle boundary led to the crustal vertical accretion and the formation of the crust-mantle transitional zone, which is a significant mechanism for the chemical adjustment of the crust-mantle boundary since the Phanerozoic.

Abstract:With the investigation of water in natural samples, experiments on the water solubility in mantle minerals, and geophysical surveys on the deep mantle structure since the 1990s, it has been gradually known that the mass of water preserved in the deep mantle in the form of point defects in crystal lattice could be comparable with that of the present ocean. Besides its remarkable impacts on the physical properties of minerals such as thermal and electrical conductivity, viscosity, and elemental diffusivity, water could also affect the production of mafic magmatism from different geological backgrounds. Water plays a role as a strong incompatible element during mantle melting, and its preferential partitioning into the melts than the residue solid can largely affect the structure of the melts and consequently impact the melt-solid equilibrium. In principle, for a mantle under specific pressure and temperature, water can lower the solidus temperature and increase the partial melting degree. In contrast, for an adiabatically decompressing mantle, water can deepen the initial melting depth and decrease the average partial melting degree. During the past several years, more and more evidence supports that water accounts for not only the low degrees of partial melting at the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary, but also the high degrees of partial melting required for the formation of large igneous provinces. In this work, the new progresses on the water contents of mantle-derived magmas and their effects on partial melting in different tectonic settings (e. g. mid-ocean ridge, island arc, mantle transition zone, large igneous provinces, continental intraplate, oceanic island) were briefly introduced. We also point out the limitations of the present works and the challenges in the future

Abstract:Magmatism at some intraplate volcanoes and large igneous provinces (LIPs) in continental areas may originate from hydrous mantle upwelling (i.e. a plume) from the mantle transition zone (MTZ) at 410–660 km depths in the Earth’s deep interior. However, the ultimate origin of the magmatism, i.e. why mantle plumes could have been generated at the MTZ, remains unclear. Here, we study the buoyancy of a plume by investigating basalts from the Changbaishan volcano, beneath which a mantle plume from the hydrous MTZ is observed via seismology. Based on carefully determined water contents of the basalts, the potential temperature of the source mantle is estimated to be 1310–1400 °C, which is within the range of the normal upper mantle temperature. This observation suggests that the mantle plume did not have a significant excess heat, and that the plume upwelled because of buoyancy resulting from water supplied from the Pacific slab in the MTZ. Such a hydrous mantle plume can account for the formation of extremely hydrous LIP magmatism. The water was originally sourced from a stagnant slab and stored in the MTZ, and then upwelled irrespective of the presence or absence of a deep thermal plume.

Abstract:The primitive mantle of the earth was in a high temperature global melt state. The cooling-evolution process of the upper layer of the primitive mantle could be divided into 3 phases: (1) a phase of crystallization-accumulation of minerals with high melting temperatures, (2) a phase of silicate liquid immiscibility and (3) a phase of melt solidification. During the process of the cooling-evolution,volatile components were released from the primitive mantle to have formed the supercritical fluid sphere later. The magma rich in Si-Al, which were formed by silicate liquid immiscibility, were solidified to form the primary crust. The supercritical fluid sphere was then decomposed to have formed acidic hydrosphereand CO_2 aerosphere respectively.
Mineral reservoirs and behaviors of hydrogen in Earth’s lower mantle

Abstract:The incorporation of H into minerals imposes profound effects on their physicochemical signatures of the solid Earth. The locations of hydrogen reservoirs are detected by seismology. However, the mineral responsible for storing large quantity of hydrogen, particularly in Earth’s lower mantle is still controversial. Combining a set of in-situ probes at high pressure-temperature and first principles simulation, we investigated the solubility and behaviors of H in silica and hydroxide up to the conditions found at the core-mantle boundary. The solubility of hydrogen keeps high in those minerals even along the mantle geotherm. Under deep lower mantle pressures, hydrogen atoms are free from the hydroxyl bonding and becomes highly diffusive. The swift diffusion of hydrogen ions induces soaring electrical conductivity when the sample is laser heated. Those exotic properties indicate novel transport mechanisms for both charge and mass at Earth’s deep lower mantle. The potential of hydrogen enriched volatile reservoirs may carry major impacts on the electrical and magnetic behaviors, as well as redox, H isotopic mixing, and other geochemical processes in the Earth’s deep interiors.
Seismic structure and dynamic process of the Earth's inner core and its boundary

Abstract:Modern seismology has revealed complex structures of the Earth's inner core and its boundary. The interior of the Earth's inner core exhibits both velocity and attenuation anisotropy, and hemispherical variations of velocity, attenuation and anisotropy, while the surface of the inner core possesses topography and mushy zone in some localized regions. The inner core velocity and attenuation anisotropy is cylindrical with the axis of high velocity and high attenuation parallel with the Earth's rotation axis, and depth dependent with the topmost 100 similar to 400 km close to be isotropic and the innermost 300 similar to 600 km possibly possessing a distinct anisotropy. The hemispherical variations in the inner core are manifested in many aspects: the isotropic velocity of the topmost similar to 100 km of the eastern hemisphere is 0.8% faster than that of the western hemisphere, the attenuation in the top similar to 100 km of the eastern hemisphere (Q=250) is stronger than that of the western hemisphere (Q=600), the top isotropic layer is thinner in the western hemisphere (similar to 100 km) than in the eastern hemisphere (similar to 400 km), and the inner core anisotropy in the western hemisphere (similar to 4%) is stronger than in the eastern hemisphere (similar to 0.7%). In the boundary, the inner core exhibits topographic variations with height changes of 1 similar to 14 km beneath the Philippine Sea, the Yellow Sea, the western Pacific and Central America, and a mushy zone with a thickness of 4 similar to 8 km beneath the southwest Okhotsk Sea. These new findings have motivated a series of new physical mechanisms in the scientific community and demand for reevaluation of outer core composition, thermal-compositional convection in the outer core, inner core solidification process and driving force of Earth's geodynamo. These results suggest that the inner core solidification process and the driving force of Earth's geodynamo are not laterally homogeneous, as it has long been held in the traditional views. Solidification may occur in the western hemisphere releasing latent heat and light elements, while melting may occur in the eastern hemisphere absorbing latent heat and light elements. Therefore, the driving forces for the outer core convection in these two hemispheres may be different and may even be in opposite signs. Such alternative solidification and melting should also occur in the localized topographic regions. Moreover, the solidification in the region of a mushy zone would release both thermal and chemical energy, while that in other regions of a sharp inner core boundary only releases thermal energy.
Trace element partitioning in a deep magma ocean and the origin of the Hf-Nd mantle array

Abstract:Crystallization in Earth's deep magma ocean could have caused trace element fractionation in the lower mantle that might be inherited to the isotopic compositions of the present-day mantle. However, the trace element partitioning has been experimentally investigated only up to the uppermost lower-mantle pressures. Here, we determined the bridgmanite/melt partition coefficients D of La, Nd, Sm, Lu, and Hf from 24 to 115 gigapascals, covering the wide pressure range of the lower mantle. Results demonstrate substantial reductions in D Lu and D Hf from >1 to ≪1 with increasing pressure to 91 gigapascals. We also found D Lu / D Hf > 1 and D Sm / D Nd < 1 under deep lower-mantle conditions, evolving melts toward low Lu/Hf and high Sm/Nd ratios by crystallizing bridgmanite. If residual melts form a dense hidden reservoir in the lowermost mantle, the complementary accessible mantle has the Hf and Nd isotopic compositions matching the observed terrestrial mantle array that deviates from the bulk silicate Earth reference.

Fractional crystallization of a basal lunar magma ocean: A dense melt-bearing garnetite layer above the core?

Abstract:In the wake of its accretion, the Moon was likely partially or fully molten, forming a lunar magma ocean (LMO). A fully molten Moon may crystallize neutrally buoyant olivine, whose accumulation may form a barrier leading to a separation into two independently evolving melt reservoirs. This study investigates the crystallization of such a putative basal lunar magma ocean, ranging from the core mantle boundary (with radius r = 380 km) to the level of neutral olivine buoyancy (r = 600 km). Consecutive crystallization experiments determine liquidus temperatures and crystallize 10–30 wt% minerals, before conceptually segregating these according to their buoyancy, and then stepping to a new bulk composition that corresponds to the residual melt after removal of the cumulate minerals.The first olivine to crystallize from a Taylor Whole Moon composition (twm, XMg = Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) = 0.83) has XMg = 0.94 and is neutrally buoyant at 3.8 GPa according to the melt density model of Lange and Carmichael (1990). Crystallization begins at the core mantle boundary, but early olivine floats and re-dissolves until the magma ocean cools to the liquidus temperature at the depth of neutral buoyancy (1850 °C). At this point a > 500 km thick olivine-only layer could form, mainly fed from the upper magma shell. The crystallization sequence in the basal magma ocean is olivine-only at 1850–1675 °C, 0–26 pcs (wt% percent solidified) → olivine + opx (to 1600 °C, 42 pcs) → opx + cpx + garnet (to 1580 °C, 60 pcs) → cpx + garnet (to 1520 °C, 73 pcs) → cpx + garnet + olivine leaving 11 wt% residual melt at 1450 °C.Cooling this last melt to 1300 °C leads to 80% garnet + cpx + olivine + Ti-spinel, the residual liquid corresponding to 2.2% of the basal magma ocean. Olivine, opx and cpx remain buoyant over the entire crystallization interval and various pyroxenite layers are added to the olivine layer. Garnet and the final cotectic cpx + garnet + olivine + FeTi-oxide assemblage instead form a 70 km thick basal layer on the core-mantle boundary. Such a layer provides a gravitationally stable high-density lowermost lunar mantle, which would concur with a recent re-analysis of the lunar seismic data. The lowest temperature experiment at 1300 °C, not much above the 1250 °C proposed for the core-mantle boundary from inversion of geophysical data, had about 20% of a highly evolved, dense Fe-rich melt. It is feasible that this melt has remained in its liquid state to present day, providing an explanation for the proposed low vp and vs layer and high dissipation just above the core-mantle boundary.

Hydration and Dehydration in the Lower Margin of a Cold Mantle Wedge: Implications for Crust–mantle Interactions and Petrogeneses of Arc Magmas

Abstract:Garnet orthopyroxenites from Maowu (Dabieshan orogen, eastern China) were formed from a refractory harzburgite/dunite protolith. They preserve mineralogical and geochemical evidence of hydration/metasomatism and dehydration at the lower edge of a cold mantle wedge. Abundant polyphase inclusions in the cores of garnet porphyroblasts record the earliest metamorphism and metasomatism in garnet orthopyroxenites. They are mainly composed of pargasitic amphibole, gedrite, chlorite, talc, phlogopite, and Cl-apatite, with minor anhydrous minerals such as orthopyroxene, sapphirine, spinel, and rutile. Most of these phases have high XMg, NiO, and Ni/Mg values, implying that they probably inherited the chemistry of pre-existing olivine. Trace element analyses indicate that polyphase inclusions are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE), light rare earth elements (LREE), and high field strength elements (HFSE), with spikes of Ba, Pb, U, and high U/Th. Based on the P–T conditions of formation for the polyphase inclusions (˜1.4 GPa, 720–850°C), we suggest that the protolith likely underwent significant hydration/metasomatism by slab-derived fluid under shallow–wet–cold mantle wedge corner conditions beneath the forearc. When the hydrated rocks were subducted into a deep–cold mantle wedge zone and underwent high-pressure–ultrahigh-pressure (HP–UHP) metamorphism, amphibole, talc, and chlorite dehydrated and garnet, orthopyroxene, Ti-chondrodite, and Ti-clinohumite formed during prograde metamorphism. The majority of LILE (e.g. Ba, U, Pb, Sr, and Th) and LREE were released into the fluid formed by dehydration reactions, whereas HFSE (e.g. Ti, Nb, and Ta) remained in the cold mantle wedge lower margin. Such fluid resembling the trace element characteristics of arc magmas evidently migrates into the overlying, internal, hotter part of the mantle wedge, thus resulting in a high degree of partial melting and the formation of arc magmas.
Persistence of Strong Silica-Enriched Domains in the Earth's Lower Mantle

Abstract:The composition of the lower mantle $-$ comprising 56% of Earth's volume $-$ remains poorly constrained. Among the major elements, Mg/Si ratios ranging from $\sim$0.9$-$1.1, such as in rocky solar-system building blocks (or chondrites), to $\sim$1.2$-$1.3, such as in upper-mantle rocks (or pyrolite), have been proposed. Geophysical evidence for subducted lithosphere deep in the mantle has been interpreted in terms of efficient mixing and thus homogeneous Mg/Si across most of the mantle. However, previous models did not consider the effects of variable Mg/Si on the viscosity and mixing efficiency of lower-mantle rocks. Here, we use geodynamic models to show that large-scale heterogeneity with viscosity variations of $\sim$20$\times$, such as due to the dominance of intrinsically strong (Mg,Fe)SiO$_3-$bridgmanite in low-Mg/Si domains, are sufficient to prevent efficient mantle mixing, even on large scales. Models predict that intrinsically strong domains stabilize degree-two mantle-convection patterns, and coherently persist at depths of $\sim$1,000$-$2,200 km up to the present-day, separated by relatively narrow up-/downwelling conduits of pyrolitic material. The stable manifestation of such "bridgmanite-enriched ancient mantle structures" (BEAMS) may reconcile the geographical fixity of deep-rooted mantle-upwelling centers, and fundamental geophysical changes near 1,000 km depth (e.g. in terms of seismic-tomography patterns, radial viscosity increase, lateral deflections of rising plumes and sinking slabs). Moreover, these ancient structures may provide a reservoir to host primordial geochemical signatures.

Abstract:Earth's lower mantle is generally believed to be seismically and chemically homogeneous because most of the key seismic parameters can be explained using a simplified mineralogical model at expected pressure-temperature conditions. However, recent high-resolution tomographic images have revealed seismic and chemical stratification in the middle-to-lower parts of the lower mantle. Thus far, the mechanism for the compositional stratification and seismic inhomogeneity, especially their relationship with the speciation of iron in the lower mantle, remains poorly understood. We have built a complete and integrated thermodynamic model of iron and aluminum chemistry for lower mantle conditions and from this model has emerged a stratified picture of the valence, spin, and composition profile in the lower mantle. Within this picture the lower mantle has an upper region with Fe3+-enriched bridgmanite with high-spin ferropericlase and metallic Fe and a lower region with low-spin, iron-enriched ferropericlase coexisting with iron-depleted bridgmanite and almost no metallic Fe. The transition between the regions occurs at a depth of around 1600 km and is driven by the spin transition in ferropericlase, which significantly changes the iron partitioning and speciation to one that favors Fe2+ in ferropericlase and suppresses Fe3+ and metallic iron formation. These changes lead to lowered bulk sound velocity by 3-4% around the middle-lower mantle and enhanced density by similar to 1% toward the lowermost mantle. The predicted chemically and seismically stratified lower mantle differs dramatically from the traditional homogeneous model.
