Abstract:Negative stiffness (NS) elements play a significant role in determining the properties of NS mechanical metamaterials. This work proposes novel composite NS elements which are composed of viscoelastic and shape-memory materials with the aim to induce additional dissipation mechanisms and temperature-dependent properties. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polylactic acid (PLA) are designed to be distributed through the thickness direction of the curved NS beams, which possess typical viscoelasticity and shape memory effect, respectively. The fabrication of composite NS elements is achieved by the combined method of fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing for PLA and infusion for PDMS. The influences of PDMS layers on shape memory recovery properties are demonstrated by shape recovery tests. Deformation modes under different temperatures are revealed via uniaxial tensile and compression, illustrating distinguishing features of gradient decrease, snap-through and long plateau. The combination of numerical and experimental methods is adopted to examine the vibration isolation properties, which presents tunable performances associated with temperature and the arrangement of composite layers. This work can potentially bring exciting new opportunities for NS structures by harnessing dissipated materials and smart materials.
