Abstract:The perennial demand for highly efficient short-haul communications is evidenced by a sustained explosion of growth in data center infrastructure that is predicted to continue for the foreseeable future. In these relatively compact networks, cost-sensitivity is of particular importance, which limits options to direct detection schemes that are more cost efficient than their coherent counterparts. Since their initial demonstration, multi-soliton states in optical microresonators have been observed to manifest in self-organised ensembles where soliton pulses are equally spaced around the resonators. In the spectral domain, these states, dubbed soliton crystals (SCs), result in significant enhancements to individual comb lines depending on the crystal state, making them well suited towards intensity-modulated direct detection (IMDD) schemes. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate adiabatic, deterministic access to lower-order soliton crystal states using an auxiliary-assisted cavity pumping method, attaining up to 19.6 dB enhancement of the comb lines in the 7-SC configuration compared to the single-soliton state. Seven comb lines of each 46 Gbaud/s pulse amplitude modulation 4 (PAM4) is transmitted over 4km of fiber in comb lines across the C-band with bit-error-rates (BER) as low as 5E-5. Our demonstration shows the promising way of using soliton crystal states as future integrated sources for highly stable Terabaud/s datacenter communications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an O-band single-lane 200 Gb/s intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) transmission system using a low-chirp, broadband, and high-power directly modulated laser (DML). The employed laser is an isolator-free packaged module with over 65-GHz modulation bandwidth enabled by a distributed feedback plus passive waveguide reflection (DFB+R) design. We transmit high baud rate signals over 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without using any optical amplifiers and demodulate them with reasonably low-complexity digital equalizers. We generate and detect up to 170 Gbaud non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK), 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), and 100 Gbaud PAM6 in the optical back-to-back configuration. After transmission over the 20-km optical-amplifier-free SSMF link, up to 150 Gbaud NRZ-OOK, 106 Gbaud PAM4, and 80 Gbaud PAM6 signals are successfully received and demodulated, achieving bit error rate (BER) performance below the 6.25%-overhead hard-decision (HD) forward-error-correction code (FEC) limit. The demonstrated results show the possibility of meeting the strict requirements towards the development of 200 Gb/s/lane IM/DD technologies, targeting 800 Gb/s and 1.6 Tb/s LR applications.

Abstract:A free-space optical (FSO) transmission system is experimentally demonstrated in the long-wave infrared (LWIR, 9.15 mu m) using a directly modulated quantum cascade laser (DM-QCL) and a commercial mercury-cadmium-telluride infrared photovoltaic detector. At room temperature, the DMQCL is current-modulated by discrete multitone signals pre-processed with bit-/power-loading. Up to 5.1 Gbit/s data rate is achieved with bit error rate performance below the 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error correction limit of 4.5 x 10(-3), enabled by a frequency domain equalizer. The stability study of the FSO system is also performed at multiple temperature values. This study can provide a valuable reference for future terrestrial and space communications.

Abstract:In this Letter, we report an investigation of the feasibility and performance of wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) optical communications using an integrated perfect soliton crystal as the multi-channel laser source. First, we confirm that perfect soliton crystals pumped directly by a distributed-feedback (DFB) laser self-injection locked to the host microcavity has sufficiently low frequency and amplitude noise to encode advanced data formats. Second, perfect soliton crystals are exploited to boost the power level of each microcomb line, so that it can be directly used for data modulation, excluding preamplification. Third, in a proof-of-concept experiment, we demonstrate seven-channel 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) and 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) data transmissions using an integrated perfect soliton crystal as the laser carrier; excellent data receiving performance is obtained for various fiber link distances and amplifier configurations. Our study reveals that fully integrated Kerr soliton microcombs are viable and advantageous for optical data communications.

Abstract:Globally, the long-haul transmission of ultra-high bandwidth data is enabled through coherent communications. Driven by the rapid pace of growth in interconnectivity over the last decade, long-haul data transmission has reached capacities on the order of tens to hundreds of terabits per second, over fiber reaches which may span thousands of kilometers. Data center communications however operate in a different regime, featuring shorter reaches and characterized as being more cost and power sensitive. While integrated microresonator frequency combs are poised to revolutionize light sources used for high-speed data transmission over fiber, their use has been limited to coherent detection schemes. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of microresonator frequency combs pumped with a single laser for the transmission of high-speed data, importantly using direct detection schemes. We achieve 120 Gb/s and 240 Gb/s aggregate data transmission for 30 Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) and 60 Gb/s pulse modulation amplitude 4 (PAM4) modulation formats respectively over 2 km of optical fiber, exceeding the reach, single lane data rate, and aggregate data rates specified in Parallel Single Mode 4 (PSM4) and Course Wavelength Division Multiplex 4 (CWDM4) multi-source agreements. Remarkably, we achieve an extremely low power penalty of 0.1 dB compared to back-to-back characterization. The results firmly cement CMOS-compatible micro-resonator frequency combs based high-speed data transmission as a viable technology for the cost and power sensitive data center transceiver industry.

Abstract:Microresonator frequency comb-based high-speed data transmission provides a pathway towards augmented data capacity without increasing the number of laser sources. Their use with intensity-modulated direct detection modulation (IMDD) formats is especially pertinent in data center communications where minimizing cost, latency and complexity is paramount. This however implies that the same extent of digital signal processing techniques commonly used in coherent detection for the management of fiber impairments including chromatic dispersion are not available. With the proliferation of silicon photonics technologies in data center transceivers integrated dispersion compensation which can overcome fiber impairments would be of great merit. We demonstrate low power generation of the primary comb state in a silicon nitride microresonator and transmission of 25 Gb/s NRZ and 50 Gb/s PAM4 data over 20 km of single mode fiber. This represents the longest fiber reach demonstrated to date for the transmission of IMDD data using an integrated, microresonator frequency comb. An integrated, tunable grating device for dispersion compensation that reduces dispersion impairments after several fiber lengths generates significant improvements in the eye diagram, six orders of magnitude improvement in the bit-error rate and 14 dB improvement in the transmitter and dispersion eye closure quaternary values. Concurrently, doubling data transmission is demonstrated via polarization multiplexing a comb line and successful dispersion compensation of up to 20 km.

Abstract:Abstract Micro-combs - optical frequency combs generated by integrated micro-cavity resonators – offer the full potential of their bulk counterparts, but in an integrated footprint. They have enabled breakthroughs in many fields including spectroscopy, microwave photonics, frequency synthesis, optical ranging, quantum sources, metrology and ultrahigh capacity data transmission. Here, by using a powerful class of micro-comb called soliton crystals, we achieve ultra-high data transmission over 75 km of standard optical fibre using a single integrated chip source. We demonstrate a line rate of 44.2 Terabits s −1 using the telecommunications C-band at 1550 nm with a spectral efficiency of 10.4 bits s −1 Hz −1 . Soliton crystals exhibit robust and stable generation and operation as well as a high intrinsic efficiency that, together with an extremely low soliton micro-comb spacing of 48.9 GHz enable the use of a very high coherent data modulation format (64 QAM - quadrature amplitude modulated). This work demonstrates the capability of optical micro-combs to perform in demanding and practical optical communications networks.

Abstract:Abstract The proliferation of computation-intensive technologies has led to a significant rise in the number of datacenters, posing challenges for high-speed and power-efficient datacenter interconnects (DCIs). Although inter-DCIs based on intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD) along with wavelength-division multiplexing technologies exhibit power-efficient and large-capacity properties, the requirement of multiple laser sources leads to high costs and limited scalability, and the chromatic dispersion (CD) restricts the transmission length of optical signals. Here we propose a scalable on-chip parallel IM-DD data transmission system enabled by a single-soliton Kerr microcomb and a reconfigurable microring resonator-based CD compensator. We experimentally demonstrate an aggregate line rate of 1.68 Tbit/s over a 20-km-long SMF. The extrapolated energy consumption for CD compensation of 40-km-SMFs is ~0.3 pJ/bit, which is calculated as being around 6 times less than that of the commercial 400G-ZR coherent transceivers. Our approach holds significant promise for achieving data rates exceeding 10 terabits.

Abstract:The error measurement for soliton communication was successfully realized. For 2.5 Gbit/s solitons transmitted over 52 km, there is no error within two hours. The key techniques the generation of ultra-short optical pulses, external modulator with high speed, amplification for electrical and optical signals, the synchronization for soliton pulses and modulation signal and dispersion allocation for normal and abnormal dispersion fibers were introduced and analyzed. The experimental phenomena were theoretically analyzed.
