Abstract:The interplay of different electronic phases underlies the physics of unconventional superconductors. One of the most intriguing examples is a high-Tc superconductor FeTe1-xSex: it undergoes both a topological transition, linked to the electronic band inversion, and an electronic nematic phase transition, associated with rotation symmetry breaking, around the same critical composition xc where superconducting Tc peaks. At this regime, nematic fluctuations and symmetry-breaking strain could have an enormous impact, but this is yet to be fully explored. Using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we study the electronic nematic transition in FeTe1-xSex as a function of composition. Near xc, we reveal the emergence of electronic nematicity in nanoscale regions. Interestingly, we discover that superconductivity is drastically suppressed in areas where static nematic order is the strongest. By analyzing atomic displacement in STM topographs, we find that small anisotropic strain can give rise to these strongly nematic localized regions. Our experiments reveal a tendency of FeTe1-xSex near x 0.45 to form puddles hosting static nematic order, suggestive of nematic fluctuations pinned by structural inhomogeneity, and demonstrate a pronounced effect of anisotropic strain on superconductivity in this regime.

Abstract:<p>Fiber-shaped electronics have attracted broad interests due to the surging demand for wearable devices in recent years. It is highly desired if we can design fiber or textile electronics that can respond to room temperature stimulus and be welded. In this work, we developed an efficient and scalable way to fabricate semiliquid metal coated conductive and weldable fibers in large quantity with various designed mechanical properties. The conductive fibers called Cu-Ga-In/fibers consist of natural and synthetic fiber cores, adhesive polymethacrylates coating and semiliquid metal (Cu-Ga-In) coating. Combining the unique mechanical properties of different fiber cores and high conductivity of Cu-Ga-In coating, conductive fibers with large tensile strength, knittability and strong stretchability are fabricated as high strength conductor, heater, and stretchable wire. Besides, Cu-Ga-In coating can realize liquid welding, response to room temperature stimulus and offer unique property of soft-stiffness switching. Finally, we demonstrated the applications of the Cu-Ga-In/fibers as 3D circuits and liquid bridges to reduce the resistance variation caused by the fiber stretching.</p>

Abstract:E-textiles are of interest in a variety of fields, such as wearable electronics and real-time healthcare monitoring. Critical challenges remain, related to design and fabrication techniques to meet the varied requirements for e-textiles. As an ancient and incomparable textile fiber, natural silk fibers can be considered to address these issues. However, processing challenges have thus far precluded the realization of electrically conducting natural silks. Here, we report a scalable dip-coating strategy to construct conductive silk fibers (CSFs). Natural silk fibers were functionalized by a tailor-made carbon nanotube (CNT) paint, which selectively etches the surface of the silk fibers without destroying the internal structure of the fibers. The CSFs maintained the properties of both the silks and CNTs, with high mechanical performance, super-hydrophobicity, solvent resistance, and thermal sensitivity. The CSFs can be automatically woven into fabrics, resulting in textiles sensitive to surrounding physical stimuli, including force, strain, temperature, and solvents.
Shear-enhanced Liquid Crystal Spinning of Conjugated Polymer Fibers

Abstract:Conjugated polymer fibers can be used to manufacture various soft fibrous optoelectronic devices, significantly advancing wearable devices and smart textiles. Recently, conjugated polymer-based fibrous electronic devices have been widely used in energy conversion, electrochemical sensing, and human-machine interaction. However, the insufficient mechanical properties of conjugated polymer fibers, the difficulty in solution processing semiconductors with rigid main chains, and the challenges in large-scale continuous production have limited their further development in the wearable field. We regulated the pi - pi stacking interactions in conjugated polymer molecules below their critical liquid crystal concentration by applying fluid shear stress. We implemented secondary orientation, leading to the continuous fabrication of anisotropic semiconductor fibers. This strategy enables conjugated polymers with rigid backbones to synergistically enhance the mechanical and semiconductor properties of fibers through liquid crystal spinning. Furthermore, conjugated polymer fibers, exhibiting excellent electrochemical performance and high mechanical strength (600 MPa) that essentially meet the requirements for industrialized preparation, maintain stability under extreme temperatures, radiation, and chemical reagents. Lastly, we have demonstrated logic circuits using semiconductor fiber organic electrochemical transistors, showcasing its application potential in the field of wearable fabric-style logic processing. These findings confirm the importance of the liquid crystalline state and solution control in optimizing the performance of conjugated polymer fibers, thus paving the way for developing a new generation of soft fiber semiconductor devices.

Abstract:Electro-thermochromic yarn was prepared by wrapping pure cotton yarn on carbon nanotube/cotton composite yarn. The CNT/cotton composite yarn as the core yarn provides good electrical conductivity while the pure cotton yarn as the wrapped yarn plays a protective role and enables the color changing effect after coating with thermochromic inks. The electro-thermochromic yarn showed remarkable resistive heating and color-changing properties under different applied currents. Abundant and reversible color changes are clearly observed by coating the thermochromic inks onto the surface of yarn and fabric. Depends on the methods, a pure color changing fabric can be made from the electro-thermochromic yarns and fabrics with color changing patterns can be achieved by printing the thermochromic inks into the fabrics from the CNT/cotton cored yarn. Abstract:A versatile molecular soldering‐governed defect engineering strategy is proposed to simultaneously control the microscale, mesoscale, and macroscale structural defects in wet‐spun MoS2 semiconducting fibers, which affords two orders of magnitude enhancement in responsivity and remarkable mechanical robustness, thus enabling large‐scale weaving of reliable smart textile optoelectronic systems. Semiconducting fibers (SCFs) are of significant interest to design next‐generation wearable and comfortable optoelectronics that seamlessly integrate with textiles. However, the practical applications of current SCFs are always limited by poor optoelectronic performance and low mechanical robustness caused by uncontrollable multiscale structural defects. Herein, a versatile in situ molecular soldering‐governed defect engineering strategy is proposed to construct ultrahigh responsivity and robust wet‐spun MoS2 SCFs, by using a π‐conjugated dithiolated molecule to simultaneously patch microscale sulfur vacancies within MoS2 nanosheets, diminish mesoscale interlayer voids/wrinkles, promote macroscale orientation, build long‐range photoelectron percolation bridges, and provide n‐doping effect. The derived MoS2 SCFs exhibit over two orders of magnitude higher responsivity (144.3 A W−1) than previously reported fiber photodetectors, 37.3‐fold faster photoresponse speed (52 ms) than pristine counterpart, and remarkable bending robustness (retain 94.2% of the initial photocurrent after 50 000 bending‐flattening cycles). Such superior robustness and photodetection capacity of MoS2 SCFs further enable large‐scale weaving of reliable smart textile optoelectronic systems, such as direction‐identifiable wireless light alarming system, modularized mechano‐optical communication system, and indoor light‐controlled IoT system. This work offers a universal strategy for the scalable production of mechanically robust and high‐performance SCFs, opening up exciting possibilities for large‐scale integration of wearable optoelectronics.

Abstract:Various types of colorful threads have been modified into conductive by wrapping with Cu‐Ag nanonets without losing their original features. The conductive threads show excellent mechanical stability, dry‐wash durability and sewability. E‐textile devices such as fabric heater, touch screen gloves, temperature sensing cloth, and warm fabrics are fabricated for smart‐fabric applications. Electronic textiles have been regarded as the basic building blocks for constructing a new generation of wearable electronics. However, the electronization of textiles often changes their original properties such as color, softness, glossiness, or flexibility. Here a rapid room‐temperature fabrication method toward conductive colorful threads and fabrics with Ag‐coated Cu (Cu‐Ag) nanonets is demonstrated. Cu–Ag core–shell nanowires are produced through a one‐pot synthesis followed by electroless deposition. According to the balance of draining and entraining forces, a fast dip‐withdraw process in a volatile solution is developed to tightly wrap Cu–Ag nanonets onto the fibers of thread. The modified threads are not only conductive, but they also retain their original features with enhanced mechanical stability and dry‐wash durability. Furthermore, various e‐textile devices are fabricated such as a fabric heater, touch screen gloves, a wearable real‐time temperature sensor, and warm fabrics against infrared thermal dissipation. These high quality and colorful conductive textiles will provide powerful materials for promoting next‐generation applications in wearable electronics.

Abstract:Recent breakthroughs in fibre technology have enabled the assembly of functional materials with intimate interfaces into a single fibre with specific geometries 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 , delivering diverse functionalities over a large area, for example, serving as sensors, actuators, energy harvesting and storage, display, and healthcare apparatus 12,13,14,15,16,17 . As semiconductors are the critical component that governs device performance, the selection, control and engineering of semiconductors inside fibres are the key pathways to enabling high-performance functional fibres. However, owing to stress development and capillary instability in the high-yield fibre thermal drawing, both cracks and deformations in the semiconductor cores considerably affect the performance of these fibres. Here we report a mechanical design to achieve ultralong, fracture-free and perturbation-free semiconductor fibres, guided by a study on stress development and capillary instability at three stages of the fibre formation: the viscous flow, the core crystallization and the subsequent cooling stage. Then, the exposed semiconductor wires can be integrated into a single flexible fibre with well-defined interfaces with metal electrodes, thereby achieving optoelectronic fibres and large-scale optoelectronic fabrics. This work provides fundamental insights into extreme mechanics and fluid dynamics with geometries that are inaccessible in traditional platforms, essentially addressing the increasing demand for flexible and wearable optoelectronics.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers have demonstrated promising optoelectronic properties, but their brittleness and poor mechanical characteristics have hindered their fabrication into durable fibers and textiles. Here, we report a universal approach to continuously producing highly strong, ultratough conjugated polymer fibers using a flow-enhanced crystallization (FLEX) method. These fibers exhibit one order of magnitude higher tensile strength (>200 megapascals) and toughness (>80 megajoules per cubic meter) than traditional semiconducting polymer fibers and films, outperforming many synthetic fibers, ready for scalable production. These fibers also exhibit unique strain-enhanced electronic properties and exceptional performance when used as stretchable conductors, thermoelectrics, transistors, and sensors. This work not only highlights the influence of fluid mechanical effects on the crystallization and mechanical properties of conjugated polymers but also opens up exciting possibilities for integrating these functional fibers into wearable electronics.
Constructing on-demand single/multi-color transitioning fabrics with photocatalysis/photothermal-armed deficient semiconductors

Abstract:On-demand color switching systems that utilize synchronized semiconductor-catalyzed reduction and photothermal-accelerated oxidation in liquid/solid are highly appealing. Herein, on-demand single/multi-color switching fabrics have been constructed by using defective SnO 2 :Sb-based color switching systems. SnO 2 :Sb nanocrystals with the suitable doping concentration accord lattices with abundant free electrons, conferring high photocatalytic and photothermal performances. A well-crafted set of dual light-responsive semiconductor-catalyzed systems with rapid color change can be attained via the homogenous mixture of SnO 2 :Sb with suitable redox dyes to produce single-color (RGB (red, green, blue)) and multi-color transitioning (purple and green) systems. The illumination of these systems by 450 nm light triggers rapid photocatalytic discoloration, while irradiation by 980 nm light confers the photothermal effect that accelerates recoloration in air. Besides, the inks can be extended to rewritable fabrics by embedding the nanocrystals and redox dyes into hydroxyethyl cellulose (as the polymer matrix) and then coating on hydrophobic cotton fabrics to produce photo-switchable fabrics with excellent single/multi-color response. By exploiting the dual light interactions with the semiconductor-mediated systems, various images/letters can be remotely printed and erased on the rewritable fabrics which show promise for potential applications as information storage media and visual sensors. Importantly, the present rewritable fabric shows good stability and reversibility. The present work provides insights into the development of novel color-switching materials.

Colorless Silk/Copper Sulfide Hybrid Fiber and Fabric with Spontaneous Heating Property under Sunlight.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for comfort, thinness, and warmth of fabrics, various functional fibers have emerged. However, natural silkworm silk, as one of the most widely used natural fibers in textile, faces the issue that it cannot be modified during the spinning process like synthetic fibers. Herein, copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) with a near-infrared (NIR) absorption property were first prepared by using regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) as the biological template. Then, trace CuS NPs prepared in RSF solution (no more than 100 ppm) were added into the RSF spinning dope to prepare colorless RSF/CuS hybrid fibers via wet-spinning process. The tensile test of the RSF/CuS hybrid fibers showed that the toughness was improved with the addition of CuS NPs, which completely met the requirements of textile development. The temperature of RSF/CuS hybrid fiber bundles could increase 18.5 °C within 3 min under 1064 nm laser irradiation with power density of 1.0 W/cm2. Finally, these RSF/CuS hybrid fiber bundles were woven into silk fabric or embroidered on a cotton fabric. Under the simulated sunlight, the temperature of RSF/CuS fabric could increase to more than 40 °C from room temperature. Also, as per the infrared images, the pattern of embroidery displayed a significant difference in temperature increase as compared to cotton matrix. Based on these results, an almost colorless RSF/CuS hybrid fiber that can be mass produced by wet spinning may have great potential in the fabrication of dyeable, light, and comfortable silk functional fabric with spontaneous heating characteristics under sunlight.
Fabrication of cotton/polyethylene glycol/stainless steel wire friction spun composite yarn and its application in electrothermal phase change textile

Abstract:This work successfully fabricated a textile with phase change and electrothermal function using a novel method. First, a core-sheath-structure composite yarn (cotton/polyethylene glycol/cotton/stainless steel wire) was prepared through friction spinning and sizing. Secondly, the composite yarn was weaved with 2-ply cotton yarns to form an electrothermal phase change textile. The resulting composite fabric possesses good phase change reliability after 50 heating/cooling cycles and exhibits great electrothermal repeatability after 50-cycle durability test. The addition of polyethylene glycol can increase the maximum surface temperature of the fabric (e.g., the highest temperature of the fabric can reach 66 °C when the voltage is 5 V, while the highest temperature of the blank sample is 56 °C), extend the heat time of composite fabrics, alleviate dramatic temperature fluctuations while charging and discharging, and improve the surface temperature distribution uniformity of the fabric. The described method displays a new platform for developing electrothermal heating elements utilized in flexural heaters, medical electrothermal, and defrosting.

Abstract:The electrochromic fibers with high electrochemical stability are fabricated continuously by coating transparent curved conductive nanonetworks. The conformal conductive nanonetworks enable an electric field homogenization inside the fibers, providing a general approach for diverse cutting‐edge electrochemical fiber devices, like fiber batteries, fiber transistors, fiber sweat sensors, and fiber supercapacitors. Electrochromic (EC) fibers capable of optical transmission, reflection, and emission modulation are highly desired for promising applications in electronic display, adaptive camouflage, and visual sensation. However, the non‐uniform electric field of the fiber structure and the lack of electrochemically stable transparent conductive electrodes still limit the practical applications of EC fibers. In this work, scalable EC fibers with long‐range modulation performance and electrochemical stability are fabricated using Ag@Au nanowires (AANWs) nanonetwork and parallel dual‐electrode. Benefiting from the electrochemically resistant Au shell layer that inhibits the oxidation of the nanonetwork electrodes, the EC fibers still maintain excellent EC performance even after 300 color changes. The synergistic interaction between the unique AANWs nanonetwork and the parallel dual‐electrode structure enables the 10 m‐long EC fibers to maintain rapid switching speeds and excellent color uniformity. Additionally, the utilization of mechanical looms to weave long EC fibers has facilitated the practical application of EC fibers in wearable displays, adaptive camouflage, and visual sensation.

Abstract:Abstract Novel core fibers have a wide range of applications in optics, as sources, detectors and nonlinear response media. Optoelectronic, and even electronic device applications are now possible, due to the introduction of methods for drawing fibres with a semiconductor core. This review examines progress in the development of glass-clad, crystalline core fibres, with an emphasis on semiconducting cores. The underlying materials science and the importance of post-processing techniques for recrystallization and purification are examined, with achievements and future prospects tied to the phase diagrams of the core materials.

Abstract:Intelligent textiles provide an ideal platform for merging technology into daily routines. However, current textile electronic systems often rely on rigid silicon components, which limits seamless integration, energy efficiency, and comfort. Chipless electronic systems still face digital logic challenges owing to the lack of dynamic energy-switching carriers. We propose a chipless body-coupled energy interaction mechanism for ambient electromagnetic energy harvesting and wireless signal transmission through a single fiber. The fiber itself enables wireless visual-digital interactions without the need for extra chips or batteries on textiles. Because all of the electronic assemblies are merged in a miniature fiber, this facilitates scalable fabrication and compatibility with modern weaving techniques, thereby enabling versatile and intelligent clothing. We propose a strategy that may address the problems of silicon-based textile systems.

Abstract:Silk has outstanding mechanical properties and biocompatibility. It has been used to fabricate traditional textiles for thousands of years and can be produced in large scale. Silk materials are potentially attractive in modern textile electronics. However, silk is not electrically conductive, thus limiting its applications in electronics. Moreover, regenerated silk is generally rigid and brittle, which hinder post processing. Here we report the fabrication of conductive silk wire in which carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns are wrapped with fluffy and flexible silk nanofiber films. The silk nanofiber film was prepared by electrospinning and then wrapped around a rotating CNT yarn in situ. The obtained silk-sheathed CNT (CNT@Silk) wire has an insulating sheath, which protects the body against electrical shock. In addition, the fabricated wires exhibit a high electrical conductivity (3.1 X 10(4) S/m), good mechanical strength (16 cN/tex), excellent flexibility, and high durability. More importantly, the wires have an extremely low density (2.0-7.8 X 10(4) g/m(3)), which is 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of the traditional metal wire (for example, Cu). Moreover, the wires display a good resistance to humidity, and a simple post treatment can make the wires splash-resistant, thereby expanding its applications. On the basis of these features, we demonstrate the use of the lightweight CNT@Silk wires in smart clothes, including electrochromism and near-field communication.

Abstract:Color-changing has a wide application including electronic display, military camouflage, intelligent switch, intelligent sensor and intelligent fabric. However, slow response, poor controllability and stability are the challenges affecting the currently application of flexible thermochromic materials. This work aims at designing and constructing hierarchical structure of core-coated electro-thermochromic carbon nanotube/polyurethane composite fibers (ECPF) by impregnation and electrospinning, resulting in color-rich and electro-driven thermochromic composite fibers. The results showed that the temperature on the surface of the composite fiber increased from 25 °C to 66.4 °C and the color changed from red to yellow with the voltage of 9 V applied to both ends of ECPF respectively. The color spectrum of ECPF can be achieved by adjusting the type of color-changing inks, and different patterns of discolored textiles can be realized by weaving. In addition, ECPF composite fibers have excellent conductivity, high sensitivity, a wide strain range (0%–310% strain) and excellent durability (>2000 cycles). The ECPF composite fibers can not only detect human micro-movement, but also exhibit a large strain range more than twice the original length. This work contributes a novel strategy of developing multi-functional electro-thermochromic nanocomposite fibers with color-changing performance and wearable electronic applications for health and human movements monitoring.

Abstract:Ultrathin, patterned, conducting metallic fibers have been extensively studied as building blocks in flexible electronics. However, their scalable processing and attainment of patterns at room temperature is challenging. In this paper, we report on the patterning of ultra-long silver submicron fibers as woven mesh through the process of continuous draw spinning in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) treatment. The silver fibers can be directly intertwined on flexible substrates, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyimide (PI). The as obtained silver submicron fiber mesh present excellent photoelectric properties ( T = 90%, R = 9 Ω sq −1 ) and outstanding flexibility and can be easily transferred on other surfaces. To demonstrate its application, flexible electrochromic smart window and infrared stealth film have been prepared.
