Abstract:Plumes have been identified as an access region for chorus waves to enter the plasmasphere. Here, for the first time, chorus wave properties are parameterized by distance from the plume boundary. Case studies and statistical analysis indicate that the polar wave vector angle, θ k , of chorus becomes more oblique near the plume edge. Occurrence rates of θ k > 35° on the plume boundary are approximately double that observed further away from the plume. Whilst the increase in θ k is apparent on both plume edges, the distribution of θ k exhibits different behavior between the Eastward and Westward boundaries. In general, the distribution of azimuthal wave vector angles, ϕ k , is symmetric about the anti-Earthwards direction. However, near the Eastward plume boundary, an Eastwards skew of ϕ k is reported. This result provides new insight on chorus propagation in the context of the chorus-to-hiss mechanism, and has implications for quantifying wave-particle interactions in the near-plume region.
Very Oblique Whistler Mode Propagation in the Radiation Belts: Effects of Hot Plasma and Landau Damping

Abstract:Satellite observations of a significant population of very oblique chorus waves in the outer radiation belt have fueled considerable interest in the effects of these waves on energetic electron scattering and acceleration. However, corresponding diffusion rates are extremely sensitive to the refractive index N, controlled by hot plasma effects including Landau damping and wave dispersion modifications by suprathermal (15-100 eV) electrons. A combined investigation of wave and electron distribution characteristics obtained from the Van Allen Probes shows that peculiarities of the measured electron distribution significantly reduce Landau damping, allowing wave propagation with high N similar to 100-200. Further comparing measured refractive indexes with theoretical estimates incorporating hot plasma corrections to the wave dispersion, we provide the first experimental demonstration that suprathermal electrons indeed control the upper limit of the refractive index of highly oblique whistler mode waves. Such results further support the importance of incorporating very oblique waves into radiation belt models.

Abstract:Whistler mode chorus waves are one of the most intense and important electromagnetic emissions in the Earth's radiation belt, where these waves are responsible for electron acceleration to relativistic energies and for energetic electron precipitation into the Earth's atmosphere. This study reports a unique multi‐spacecraft observation event that allowed for the first time to verify theoretical models of chorus wave generation. The growth rates derived from the multi‐spacecraft observations of chorus waves Cluster WBD electric field waveforms collected during the crossing of the equatorial source region were compared to the theoretical linear and nonlinear growth rates calculated using simultaneous PEACE electron measurements. We have revealed that the growth rate estimated from wave measurements is substantially higher than the estimated linear growth rate but is quite close to the estimated nonlinear growth rate. A notable wave amplification is found up to 5 degrees of magnetic latitude and higher.

Propagation of EMIC Waves Inside the Plasmasphere: A Two‐Event Study

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are important for the loss of high-energy electrons in the radiation belt. Based on the measurements of Van Allen Probes, two events during the same storm period are presented to study the propagation of EMIC waves. In the first event, left-handed polarized EMIC waves were observed near the plasmapause, while right-handed waves were observed in the inner plasmasphere. The Poynting flux of the right-hand waves was mainly directed inward and equatorward, and no positive growth rates were obtained in the region of these right-hand waves, indicating the inward propagation of the waves from a higher L-shell. In the second event, the wave vectors were quasi-perpendicular to the background magnetic field inside the plasmaspheric plume but became quasi-parallel outside. This phenomenon can be explained by the refraction of the large density gradient, which qualitatively satisfies Snell's law. These observations provide indirect evidence of the inward propagation of the EMIC waves and give a new insight on how density gradients may modify wave properties.

Abstract:Whistler mode wave is a fundamental perturbation of electromagnetic fields and plasmas in various environments including planetary space, laboratory and astrophysics. The origin and evolution of the waves are a long-standing question due to the limited instrumental capability in resolving highly variable plasma and electromagnetic fields. Here, we analyse data with the high time resolution from the multi-scale magnetospheric spacecraft in the weak magnetic environment (i.e., foreshock) enabling a relatively long gyro-period of whistler mode wave. Moreover, we develop a novel approach to separate the three-dimensional fluctuating electron velocity distributions from their background, and have successfully captured the coherent resonance between electrons and electromagnetic fields at high frequency, providing the resultant growth rate of unstable whistler waves. Regarding the energy origin for the waves, the ion distributions are found to also play crucial roles in determining the eigenmode disturbances of fields and electrons. The quantification of wave growth rate can significantly advance the understandings of the wave evolution and the energy conversion with particles.

Abstract:We present Van Allen Probes observations of periodic chorus wave emissions in the troughs of compressional ultralow frequency (ULF) waves. During this event, the spectral gap of chorus waves gradually widens as the spacecraft moves from the equatorial source region towards higher latitudes. Moreover, chorus wave intensity increases and frequency range widens after a substorm injection. We show that the periodic occurrence of chorus waves is attributed to the modulation of threshold amplitude for nonlinear growth of chorus waves by the second spatial derivative of ULF compressional magnetic field. The widening gap can be interpreted in terms of the nonlinear damping mechanism. A good agreement is also found between the nonlinear wave growth theory and the observations regarding the influence of substorm injection on the chorus. These findings support the applicability of the nonlinear theory in describing the chorus wave generation and damping, together with their modulations by ULF waves.

Abstract:Plasmaspheric density structures are considered to control the propagation trajectories of fast magnetosonic (MS) waves in the inner magnetosphere. However, whether the plasmaspheric plume can effectively alter the propagation of MS waves remains unknown. Based on the analytical model of plasma density, ray tracing simulations are performed to investigate the propagation of exactly perpendicular MS waves in the equatorial plane in the magnetosphere containing a plasmaspheric plume. We find that plasmatrough and plume MS waves propagating toward the plasmaspheric plume can be reflected into the plasmaspheric core by the plume, then potentially migrating globally and thus quasi‐trapped inside the plasmaspheric core. The simulations also indicate that lower‐frequency MS waves approaching the plasmaspheric plume are more easily reflected and quasi‐trapped inside the plasmaspheric core. Our findings illustrate a previously unexplored way that plasmatrough MS waves could access and be trapped inside the plasmaspheric core via azimuthal plasmaspheric density structures.

Abstract:With Van Allen Probes data, we present the observational support for whistler waves guided by the plasmapause based on a case study and statistical analyses. Due to the combined effects of inhomogeneous magnetic fields and plasma densities, whistler waves near the inner edge of plasmapause (plasmasphere side) will be guided by a HDD‐like (HDD, high density duct) density gradient, and tend to have very small wave normal angles (WNAs ≤20°). In contrast, whistler waves around the outer edge of the plasmapause (plasmatrough side) guided by a LDD‐like (LDD, low density duct) density gradient, tend to have quite large WNAs (≥∼60°). Moreover, the statistical analysis reveals the remarkably different properties of whistler waves around inner and outer edges of plasmapause. We suggest that the plasmapause density gradients may play a significant role in the distribution of whistler waves.

Abstract:Magnetospheric whistler mode waves are of great importance in the radiation belt electron dynamics. Here on the basis of the analysis of a rare event with the simultaneous disappearances of whistler mode plasmaspheric hiss, exohiss, and chorus triggered by a sudden decrease in the solar wind dynamic pressure, we provide evidences for the following physical scenarios: (1) nonlinear generation of chorus controlled by the geomagnetic field inhomogeneity, (2) origination of plasmaspheric hiss from chorus, and (3) leakage of plasmaspheric hiss into exohiss. Following the reduction of the solar wind dynamic pressure, the dayside geomagnetic field configuration with the enhanced inhomogeneity became unfavorable for the generation of chorus, and the quenching of chorus directly caused the disappearances of plasmaspheric hiss and then exohiss.

Abstract:Whistler-mode waves play an important role in the inner magnetospheric particle dynamics. The direction and efficiency of energy transfer between waves and particles strongly depend on the wave frequency distribution characteristics. Recent observations have drawn attention to the low-frequency whistler-mode chorus waves below 0.1 times the equatorial gyrofrequency fce of electrons outside the plasmasphere. Here, on the basis of the analysis of the Van Allen Probes wave data, we describe a new type of low-frequency hiss-like whistler-mode wave around or below 0.1 fce. We show that two normal chorus wave bands split by the 0.5 fce gap can produce the low-frequency hiss-like whistler-mode waves through the nonlinear three-wave interaction.

Abstract:Chorus waves are intense coherent whistler mode waves with frequency chirping which play a dual role in both loss and acceleration of radiation belt electrons in the Earth's magnetosphere. Although the generation of parallel chorus waves has been extensively studied by means of theory, simulations, and observations, the generation mechanism of very oblique chorus waves still remains a mystery. In this study, we have analyzed hundreds of very oblique discrete (rising or falling tone) lower band chorus events collected from 7 years of Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) waveform data to investigate their potential generation mechanisms. Comparisons between wave normal angles directly measured onboard THEMIS in the dawn‐day sector at L = 5–9 and inferred from theoretical models on the basis of measured wave characteristics (frequency sweep rate, mean frequency, and amplitude) show that these very oblique waves are more commonly generated through cyclotron resonance with anisotropic electron streams. However, a second generation mechanism via Landau resonance with low‐energy electron beams seems to be also operating on the nightside at L < 6.7 and at all local times at L > 8.5. Moreover, very oblique lower band chorus waves with large frequency chirping rates or small magnetic field amplitudes are more likely excited via cyclotron resonance, while waves with small frequency chirping rates or large magnetic field amplitudes are preferentially generated through Landau resonance. This comprehensive statistical study provides interesting insight into the possible generation mechanisms of very oblique lower band chorus waves in the Earth's magnetosphere.

Due to the combined effects of inhomogeneous magnetic fields and plasma densities, whistler mode waves near the inner edge of plasmapause (plasmasphere side) will be guided by a high density duct-like (HDD) gradient, and tend to have very small wave normal angles (WNAs <= 20 degrees) relative to the ambient magnetic field,B0. In contrast, whistler mode waves near the outer edge of the plasmapause (plasmatrough side) guided by a low density duct-like (LDD) gradient, tend to have quite large WNAs (>=similar to 60 degrees). Statistical analyses emphasize these remarkably different properties of waves in the plasmapause gradients. The results indicate that the wave ducting effects at the plasmapause may lead to unusual and anomalous energetic pitch angle scattering.
Plasmapause Surface Waves Triggered by Substorms

Abstract:In this study, we present in-situ measurement by Van Allen Probes showing that surface wave could oscillate the plasmapause and modulate hiss and electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves. Plasmapause sur-face wave (PSW) in Ps6 band was observed during an intense substorm on 16 July 2017, accompanied with quasi-periodic emissions of hiss (positively correlated to plasma density) and ECH waves (anticorrelated to the density). Phase relation between magnetic field and velocity perturbations indicatesthat the PSW was an eigenmode between southern and northern ionosphere. Measurements from ground-based magnetometers suggest that such PSW propagates sunward at dusk flank and were excited around the expansion phase of an intense substorm. Addiational cases of PSWs are also presented to demonstrate that such waves are commonly observed near plasmapause and are likely to be related to substorm activities.
Non-linear torsional Alfv\'en waves evolving in stratified viscous plasmas: Coronal hole plumes

Abstract:We model solar atmospheric structures characterised by parallel structuring. We focus on Alfv\'en waves in the weakly non-linear regime to highlight the efficiency of non-linear wave steepening when dissipative effects are prominent. We also consider the local and equilibrium conditions involved in shock formation and the shock's contributions to coronal seismology. Coronal plumes were modelled analytically by implementing the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory in cylindrical geometry. Here, the stratification and viscosity are present internal to the plume, whilst effects of the external medium, together with equilibrium conditions, are implied where the magnetic fields are parallel to the plume axis. We implemented a second-order thin flux tube approximation to obtain a wave equation that points to effects tied to non-linear, dissipative, and stratification terms, as well as terms representing atmospheric conditions. The impact of shear viscosity on non-linear Alfv\'en waves extracted by the Cohen-Kulsrud-Burgers-type equation proves more efficient when propagated to higher altitudes. The dissipative effects linked to the dimensionless viscosity indicate that the dissipative effects are not linear. Meanwhile, the delay in shock formation enables energy conversions at higher altitudes, thereby maintaining coronal heating at higher levels. The efficiency of parallel structuring and viscous damping is enhanced by such transverse structuring, as it is directly proportional to the external plasma-beta . It is observed that Alfv\'en pulses may undergo a backward shock, either in the lower levels of coronal plasma or as they propagate toward higher regions, implying a conversion of energy occurring at various altitudes. A peak was observed, indicating that the interplay reverses at heights around $1.5$ solar radii. Such effects are shown to play a key role in the context of coronal seismology.

Reviews of Modern Plasma Physics

Abstract:Chorus emission in planetary magnetospheres is taken as working paradigm to motivate a short tutorial trip through theoretical plasma physics methods and their applications. Starting from basic linear theory, readers are first made comfortable with whistler wave packets and their propagation in slowly varying weakly non-uniform media, such as the Earth’s magnetosphere, where they can be amplified by a population of supra-thermal electrons. The nonlinear dynamic description of energetic electrons in the phase space in the presence of self-consistently evolving whistler fluctuation spectrum is progressively introduced by addressing renormalization of the electron response and spectrum evolution equations. Analytical and numerical results on chorus frequency chirping are obtained and compared with existing observations and particle-in-cell simulations. Finally, the general theoretical framework constructed during this short trip through chorus physics is used to draw analogies with condensed matter and laser physics as well as magnetic confinement fusion research. Discussing these analogies ultimately presents plasma physics as an exciting cross-disciplinary field to study.
Controlling the Chirping of Chorus Waves Via Magnetic Field Inhomogeneity

Abstract:Whistler mode chorus waves are coherent electromagnetic emissions in planetary magnetospheres, characterized by rising-tone or falling-tone chirping elements. Understanding the cause of different chirping directions and their properties is an important step in resolving the long-standing problem of nonlinear chorus generation. We report here, for the first time, particle-in-cell simulations of bidirectional chirping of whistler waves in a uniform magnetic field and falling-tone-only chirping in an inhomogeneous field. Combined with previous simulations of rising-tone-only emissions, we demonstrate that the background magnetic field inhomogeneity is not required for chirping of chorus, but it plays a key role in determining the chirping direction. The findings of the present work also unveil the critical role of the dipole geometry of Earth's magnetic field in causing the statistical predominance of rising-tone chorus and the oblique propagation of falling-tone chorus. Plain Language Summary Whistler mode chorus is a type of naturally occurring electromagnetic emission in planetary magnetospheres. This important wave is known to produce relativistic electrons in the hazardous radiation belts and to precipitate energetic electrons from space into the upper atmosphere to form diffuse aurora. Chorus consists of discrete spectral elements with fast frequency chirping in either upward (rising-tone) or downward (falling-tone) directions. A long-standing problem is to understand the origin of different chirping directions and their distinctive observational properties. Here, we show, by first-principle particle simulations, that the background magnetic field inhomogeneity plays a key role in determining the chirping direction and that the dipole geometry of Earth's magnetic field essentially controls the properties of chorus. Our results naturally account for the dominance of rising-tone chorus and the oblique propagation of falling-tone chorus and provide important insights into the fundamental mechanism of the nonlinear chirping process. The propagation properties of chorus are also expected to be similar in all planetary magnetospheres with a dipole-type magnetic field.

Abstract:Chorus waves are naturally occurring electromagnetic emissions in space and are known to produce highly energetic electrons in the hazardous radiation belt. The characteristic feature of chorus is its fast frequency chirping, whose mechanism remains a long-standing problem. While many theories agree on its nonlinear nature, they differ on whether or how the background magnetic field inhomogeneity plays a key role. Here, using observations of chorus at Mars and Earth, we report direct evidence showing that the chorus chirping rate is consistently related to the background magnetic field inhomogeneity, despite orders of magnitude difference in a key parameter quantifying the inhomogeneity at the two planets. Our results show an extreme test of a recently proposed chorus generation model and confirm the connection between the chirping rate and magnetic field inhomogeneity, opening the door to controlled plasma wave excitation in the laboratory and space.
In Situ Observations of Whistler‐Mode Chorus Waves Guided by Density Ducts

Abstract:In this paper, we report the proof of the existence of density ducts in the Earth's magnetosphere by studying in situ observations of whistler-mode chorus waves using NASA's Van Allen Probe-A data. Chorus waves, originally excited inside the density ducts with wave normal angles (WNAs) smaller than the Gendrin angle at the near-equatorial region, are efficiently confined to a limited area inside density ducts (i.e., ducted regions), and remain with small WNAs as they propagate toward higher latitudes. The ducted region becomes narrower for the higher-frequency waves. Chorus waves with WNAs larger than the Gendrin angle are not guided by density ducts. Our study reveals that density ducts can effectively control the property and distribution of chorus waves, and may ultimately regulate electron dynamics in the Earth's or other planetary radiation belts.

Abstract:Propagation of whistler-mode waves in a magnetized plasma structure is investigated in the Keda linear magnetized plasma device.The magnetized plasma structure has its density peak in the center,and the background magnetic field is homogeneous along the axial direction.A whistler-mode wave with a frequency of 0.3 times of electron cyclotron frequency(fce)is launched into the plasma structure.The wave normal angle(WNA)is about 25°,and the wavefront exhibits a wedge structure.During propagation of the whistler wave,both the propagating angle and WNA slowly approach zero,and then the wave is converged toward the center of the structure.Therefore,the wave tends to be trapped in the plasma structure.The results present observational evidence of the propagation of a whistler-mode wave trapped in the enhanced-density structure in a laboratory plasma.This trapping effect is consistent with satellite observations in the inner magnetosphere.
