Bidirectional relationship between forgivingness and life satisfaction among Chinese children: A three-wave cross-lagged study

Abstract:Forgivingness, viewed as a positive personality trait, exhibits a close association with life satisfaction. However, limited research has explicitly studied the reciprocal relationship between the two, especially during adolescent transition. Can a positive cycle be identified wherein life satisfaction not only follows but also catalyzes the development of forgivingness? The current study addressed this inquiry by investigating the reciprocal association between forgivingness and life satisfaction during late childhood and early adolescence. A total of 244 elementary and 336 junior middle school students participated in this three-wave paper-and-pencil study. Findings from repeated measures analysis of variance and cross-lagged analysis revealed that: (1) Forgivingness exhibited a decline with age during the adolescent transition; (2) Unexpectedly, life satisfaction demonstrated a positive predictive influence on forgivingness in late childhood and early adolescence, whereas forgivingness did not significantly predict life satisfaction, indicating the absence of a positive cycle. The results challenge the traditional assumption that traits influence life satisfaction, underscoring the potential of enhancing life satisfaction to facilitate positive youth development, which holds notable theoretical and practical implications.
